CMC’s Corner

Team, First off, I would like to express my appreciation for those involved in my turnover. Over the last month, I have sat in on classes and observed meetings and processes; all went smoothly and revealed an efficient battle rhythm coupled with people who are striving to get better, whether as a Sailor, leader or human being. Thank you all for your efforts as we work together to train and support the future of Nuclear Power.

I’ve served in our Navy for over 24 years and have great memories of every tour.

I made the decision to commit years of my life to serving our nation mainly because I wanted the challenge. I wanted to leave my small town and do something with my life.

I have realized that I have one life to live and am committed to getting the most out of it.

How do I guarantee that I get the most out of it? Through challenges and stepping out of my comfort zone. Back on the ship I would often ask Sailors, “Do you want to maintain steady state conditions or do you want to perform infrequent operations?” The latter is how we learn, how we gain experience, and how we get better.

We have a lot going on in the world today. It is important to keep in mind why we each chose to serve our county. Don’t let your faith drift; keep your “why” at close hold and ensure you use that as fuel for your successes and accomplishments. How do you define success? We each have our own interpretations of what success means to us. Take a moment to reflect on what you define as success.

Over the coming weeks, I intend to meet our staff and students; don’t hesitate to strike up conversation when you see me, because I may beat you to it.

Hoo-yah team! I am excited and look forward to working together.

Many Sailors who attended the meeting said they appreciated what Barber had to say and some even stayed sometime after it was over to continue speaking with her.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Andrew Martinez Hard Charger Award Nuclear Power School Class 2106

Machinist’s Mate (Nuclear) 3rd Class Andrew Martinez, a former student at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command (NNPTC), received the Hard Charger Award during the Nuclear Power School (NPS) Class 2106 graduation, Feb. 4, 2022.

Martinez, from Anaheim, California, reported to Recruit Training Command (RTC) in Great Lakes, Illinois, on Oct. 20, 2020, and to NNPTC in Goose Creek, South Carolina, Dec. 30, 2020. Martinez then began “A” school and graduated with Class 2120-A May 7, 2021. After “A” school he started NPS Aug. 17, 2021.

“I joined the Navy because I wanted to start providing for my family back in California while also educating myself,” Martinez said. “The Naval Nuclear Power Program has enabled me to do exactly that. I am grateful that my family can enjoy their lives while I work on my future and challenge myself to become the greatest version of myself.”

Martinez did not volunteer to be stationed on submarines or, “sub-voled,” in boot camp. He said he has

always wanted to be on a carrier since the beginning.

Martinez said he is most looking forward to meeting all the different rates and seeing them do the job they have mastered through their time in the Navy. Martinez also said he was very nervous when he heard his name be called for the award.

“I didn’t expect to be recognized for my hard work throughout power school,” Martinez said. “As I stood on the stage while being presented the award, I felt prouder and prouder of myself. I am honored to be Class 2106’s hard charger and will continue to strive for excellence.”

The award was presented by retired Master Chief Quartermaster (SS) Harry Nettles on behalf of the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), Low Country Branch 269.

“Congratulations on your selection as the hard charger of Naval Nuclear Power Training Command,” said Nettles, FRA member. “Welcome aboard to the Fleet Reserve Association. Our motto is loyalty, protection and service to our shipmates. We strive to provide the protection in service and support all members of the same services.”

Following NPS graduation, Martinez and his fellow graduating Sailors will attend prototype training at Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) in Goose Creek, South Carolina.

“I am excited to start prototype and finish what I’ve started,” Martinez said. “I’m ready to apply all the knowledge I have into the real world and earn my place as a nuclear operator.”

Martinez said it does not matter whether one is being rewarded for their efforts or not, one should always try to bring our their best efforts and strive to be the best.

“Make a good example of yourself and bring a positive attitude, ” Martinez said. “You may not see it, but it affects your friends and it gives them something to aim for as well.”

Bats in the Attic

By Lt. Danielle Poston Our current bat situation here at NNPTC had me thinking about my other close encounter with these little creatures.

On any given Saturday, that I don’t know I have something planned, it is my habit to ask God in prayer if there is anything in particular that I’m supposed to do. On one such Saturday, I had the distinct impression that I was supposed to re-do a particularly tragic ceiling. This ceiling was in the living room of the house I lived in some years ago. The previous owner had made a failed attempt to create a set-up in which a projector could drop from a door in the ceiling and be retracted back into the attic when not in use. The project had been abandoned and haphazardly patched with a section of drywall in the ceiling leaving a two inch gap running a foot-long opening directly into the attic. The remainder of the ceiling was an ugly yellowing popcorn situation. I assumed that God wanted me to improve it with a fresh white ceiling by way of ceiling tiles from Lowe’s.

These tiles were basically made of fragile crumbly chalk compressed into one foot squares. The first thing I did was repair the hole into the attic. Then, I diligently applied the ceiling tiles with the required adhesive for the rest of the day. The job was harder than I expected; working overhead with the fragile tiles crumbling into my eyes, arms aching.

In the middle of the night, I heard a crashing sound - then another and another. To my great frustration, over the course of the night about half of the tiles crashed down into the room exploding in a chalky mess. The popcorn layer to which I applied the tiles was not adhered properly to the ceiling board above it. In the end, the ceiling resembled a sad checkerboard of partially adhered ceiling tiles and exposed popcorn and adhesive mixture. I spent the next several days cleaning up the aftermath of ceiling tile popcorn bombs. I wasn’t going to have time to get back to the ceiling for a while, so it was just going to have to stay that way. Let’s just say that my thought that God had wanted me to have a pristine ceiling to look at could not have been more wrong.

A few days later, I was puzzled to see a small collection of neighborhood cats sitting in a semi-circle looking up at the side of my house. In the twilight, I saw something fall from the attic vent and at the same time every cat leapt into the air to catch it. I walked closer and waited and to my great dismay every few seconds a bat swooped down out of the vent. I stopped counting at 50. I called the people who handled such situations. Thankfully, a “batman” came and was able to install a one-way door on the vent letting the bats out but not back in. He then took care of the cleanup. As he was leaving, he said offhandedly, “Lucky someone patched up that hole in your ceiling, otherwise you’d have been in a real mess!” I was stunned. I had, in fact, heard from God how to make very good use of a Saturday.

The cleanup I was bemoaning from a few ceiling tiles suddenly paled in comparison to the disastrous outcome that would have been my lot with hundreds of bats and their droppings in my living space. The lesson I learned that day is not to judge anything as a negative in your life too quickly. If I had made a list of 1,000 reasons why the thought had come into my mind that Saturday to hang ceiling tiles, bat infestation in the attic would never had made the list. This is a small example, but it relates to bigger things. We never have all the information about our current situations. We only know what we see and feel and perceive in one moment of time. Scripture says, “Judge nothing before the time”. What about you? Is it possible that something that is causing you to lose sleep today might be your saving grace tomorrow? You won’t be able to see it right now, but you just might see it in the future. the primary loop

VCNO Visits Hampton Roads; Highlights Naval Safety Command’s Role in Get Real, Get Better

NORFOLK -- Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) Adm. Bill Lescher visited Hampton Roadsbased Navy commands Feb. 14-15.

The visit built on prior Vice Chief listening engagements in response to the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) January 11 call to action for the Navy to Get Real and Get Better – the initiative to broadly apply the leadership behavior of Navy’s highest performing, strongly selfassessing and self-correcting, units and organizations. The Hampton Roads visit included discussions with U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Naval Information Forces, Naval Submarine Forces, and Naval Expeditionary Combat Command. The Vice Chief met with Flag and SES leaders from each of these commands, as well as with Command Triads and Major Command Commanders, to hear their thoughts on how to broadly bring alive Get Real, Get Better (GRGB) practices at speed.

In these engagements, Lescher amplified CNO’s call to action, discussed GRGB principles, and solicited specific feedback from front-line leaders to refine the next steps for scaling GRGB leadership development, tools and support, and recognition and incentives.

Lescher also met with the leadership of the newly established Naval Safety Command (NAVSAFECOM) to discuss removing barriers to accelerating their role in making the Navy more ready, safe and lethal, in alignment with CNO’s remarks at the NAVSAFECOM establishment. “Safety Command plays an essential role in Get Real, Get Better, in building better leaders and empowering teams at every single level to self-assess and to 14

self-correct, to learn and to innovate, and to solve problems more effectively” CNO remarked.

NAVSAFECOM serves as the Department of Navy lead for non-nuclear safety standards, expertise and oversight of the Navy and Marine Corps Safety Management System (SMS).

“The SMS is a fundamental shift from reacting to mishaps to proactively and transparently identifying, owning, and controlling risk,” said Lescher. “With this change, NAVSAFECOM will assess safety oversight and performance, and transfer best practices, at all levels, from individual commands up to the fleet level.”

“The Naval Safety Command is at the pointy end of the spear of the CNO’s call to action to Get Real, Get Better,” said Rear Adm. F.R. Luchtman, NAVSAFECOM commander. “As a key element of this call to action, NAVSAFECOM

will ensure risk management, problem solving and critical thinking are encouraged at the enterprise, unit and individual level.”

Throughout the rest of February, Lescher will continue to meet with leadership from Navy’s 17 communities to hear feedback on how Navy leaders can work together to bring consistently strong performance to the Fleet, reduce variability in execution, and identify and correct small problems before they grow into larger, systemic, issues.

“For GRGB to be successful, the Navy’s most senior leaders must lead by example, demonstrate Get Real, Get Better behavior, and prove its power by how they solve the problems that matter most to our Sailors,” said Lescher. “Building and inspiring trust is at the heart of how we must lead to sharpen our warfighting edge and ensure our Navy is ready for combat.”
