Last fall, I decided to get a dog.

It seemed like a reasonable idea at the time. As of this writing, he has won a best in show award and earned his American Kennel Club (AKC) S.T.A.R. (Socialization, Training, Activity, and a Responsible owner) Puppy achievement, but before I get ahead of myself let me start from the beginning.

First off, we had a dog before and we missed him dearly. He was our first “kid” or fur-kid, a good boy and part of our family for almost 10 years.

He was good with my children, had a really good temperament, was my jogging buddy (until later in his life), and relatively easy to care for. Some of the reasons I decided to get a new dog were because my daughter missed our old dog, and I missed having a jogging partner. My daughter would get emotional when seeing old pictures of him and asked a lot questions about our dog and their interactions together, such as, “what was the first thing he did when you brought me home from the hospital?”

As I reflect further into the decision to get another dog, I realized that my in-laws live on a farm and have lots of cats, a dog, and other animals.

My family had spent the summer on the farm while I completed training. Then, I moved my family here to Goose Creek, and just like that, no more pets and animals for my daughter to play with and enjoy. A lot of emotions take place when moving to a new environment and I thought if getting a new dog would add some happiness, what’s the harm?

Relating this experience to Warrior Toughness: first, I was committed to adding a new dog (or actually puppy) to our family. Second, I began the preparation phase by searching for puppies on the AKC website. Our previous dog was a Weimaraner, and we fell in love with the breed. I found a breeder, we applied for the puppy

and were accepted. We had our puppy picked out and we watched him grow and play on the breeder’s website. We were all pretty excited as we anticipated getting our pup, which was shortly after my daughter’s birthday.

The day arrived and we traveled to pick up our new pup. He was so tiny, compared to the 65-lb pup we have now.

I knew there would be growing pains, some late night potty trips, but I did not anticipate everything. The first night he howled. It was a restless night. I slept by his cage because four feet away on the couch was apparently too far away.

I continued to do that for the next few nights. Then, we brought him to our room. The first night was unfamiliar to him, so yes, a little more howling, but he eventually grew enough to sleep through the night and all seemed good, so I thought.

We entered him into a few of AKC shows, where he won best in show once and placed second in the others. He was still little, very cute, and fun. My wife began training him for his S.T.A.R. Puppy certification before COVID-19 put a lock down on a lot of extra-curricular activities. However, he started getting bigger and older in “dog years”. He was becoming a “young teen”! His behavior changed, he was stubborn, rebellious, more whiny, pretty much a drama king (IMHO), and oh the barking! I didn’t think it would be this stressful!

You see, our first dog was adopted after the crazy puppy years.

To say the least, I was a little spoiled.

Now, I have this hyper Weimar-raptor of a pup that wants to eat every little “whatever” that is on the floor. I feel overwhelmed and a little outmatched!

Yet, here is the thing, I am not doing this alone. I have my family.

First, I must remind myself of my commitment: a dog for my daughter.

This usually motivates me and keeps me from putting him up for adoption.

Second, I prepare for the future and remind myself that, hopefully he will mellow out in about one year and two months (or so) and mature. I tell myself, “he’s still a puppy!” Third, I execute by doing a lot of recalibration!

Finally, I reflect on the happiness this

dog brings to my family, and, yes, even me somtimes, when he is calm and lays beside me on the couch. And, then, squirrel!...,back to crazy puppy.

My time so far with our dog reminds me a little bit (with a stretch of the imagination) of what the Sailors at NNPTC may be going through during their naval nuclear training pipeline. It’s about two years of training. At the beginning and before arriving, maybe it is like the cute little puppy you are happily anticipating on getting, and then, the howling begins!

Please remember, you are not going through this alone. Sometimes it gets harder before it gets easier, and your chaplains are always here for you. For others reading this, maybe you, too, are going through some long adversity, say the COVID-19 era. Hopefully, this saying from a wise king will bring you encouragement:

“Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.

Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm.

But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand backto-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4-The Advantages of Companionship)

A Century of Life

Sailors stationed at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command (NNPTC) celebrated the 100th birthday of retired Vice Adm. Douglas C. Plate, July 20, near his house in Charleston, South Carolina.

Fifteen Sailors saluted and sang happy birthday to the retired three star admiral in honor of his achievements throughout life, while maintaining social distance and wearing masks amid COVID-19.

Sailors waited outside across the street from Plate’s residency to wish him a happy birthday. Plate was brought outside on a golf cart decorated with balloons and streamers. He remained on one side of the road, to avoid the risk of exposure from any possible coronavirus, as the Sailors wished him a happy birthday.

“I met [Plate] in December 2014,” said Lt. William T. McShane, officer aspects of reactor plant operations instructor at NNPTC. “He was dancing at 96 years old, and he was the life of the party.”

McShane, from Madison, Wisconsin, said he organized the birthday event to recognize Plate’s longevity and to honor his contribution to the Navy and the community. McShane said that afterwards Plate contacted McShane’s uncle, whom he had previously met him through, to send thanks to all the Sailors who showed up on his birthday and show appreciation for what they did for him.

Plate graduated from the Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut, in 1938, and was a December 1941 gradutate of the U.S. Naval Academy.

He served in a number of surface ship assignments during WWII and the years that followed, including on the USS Misssouri (SSN 780) during the surrender ceremony in 1945. He is a 1953 graduate of the Naval 4

War College and a 1960 graduate of The Industrial College of The Armed Forces. During his 34 years of commissioned service, he held a variety of positions,

mostly with the forces afloat. These included command of three ships, the Naval Destroyer School, a cruiserdestroyer flotilla, the Mine Force of the Atlantic Fleet, and during Vietnam, the Cruiser Destroyer Force of the Pacific Fleet. He was promoted to the rank of vice admiral in 1972 and became commander of the U.S. Second Fleet and NATO’s Striking Fleet, Atlantic Command and U.S. Atlantic Fleet in February of 1973.

“He has seen and experienced so much in life,” said Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Tiara Walker. “I want to be like him. To see such history before me, to outlive life, he is such an inspiration.”

Plate retired from active service in 1975 and joined the staff of The Citadel as director of planning.

He retired for the second time in June 1981, and has since served as a consultant to the College of Charleston, as a director of Braswell Shipyards, Inc., and on a variety of civic committees and boards. He is currently chairman of the City of Charleston Tourism Commission. Plate is a member of St. Michael’s Church in Charleston and The Carolina and New York Yacht Clubs. He is a Trustee and Treasurer of the Historic Charleston Foundation.

Navy USS Bonhomme Richard Fire News

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- UPDATED 4:20 p.m. July 16, 2020: Statement from Rear Admiral Philip E. Sobeck Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Three After four days of firefighting, all known fires have been extinguished aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).

Our fire teams are investigating every space to verify the absence of fire. Until every space is checked and there are no active fires we will not be able to commence any official investigations.

We did not know the origin of the fire. We do not know the extent of the damage. It is too early to make any predictions or promises of what the future of the ship will be.

We cannot make any conclusions, until the investigation is complete.

What we do know is that brave Sailors from commands all across San Diego worked tirelessly alongside Federal Firefighters to get this fire extinguished and I want to thank them for their efforts. This was a Navy team effort.

We had support from the air and sea. Three helicopter squadrons conducted more than 1,500 water bucket drops, fighting the fire and cooling the super structure and flight deck enabling fire crews to get onboard to fight the fire. Tugs also provided firefighting support from the waterline, cooling the ship’s hull.

We had 63 personnel, 40 U.S. Navy Sailors and 23 civilians, treated for minor injuries including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. We have no personnel hospitalized.

The Navy continues to work together with regulators, county and state in protecting our environment and preparing to address the community’s concerns as we move forward to the next phase.

I’d like to thank our partners from state and county, the U.S. Coast Guard, and all agencies for continued support.

UPDATED 9:30 a.m. July 16, 2020: As of 6:00 a.m. Pacific time July 16, firefighting teams are on board USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) continuing operations. The total personnel treated for minor injuries remains 63, 40 Sailors and 23 civilians.Will continue to provide updates via our social media platforms.

UPDATED 2:30 a.m. July 16, 2020: Out of an abundance of caution the pier and ship were cleared of personnel due to an initial shift in the ship’s list. Personnel are now pier side. We will continue to monitor as the ship settles.

communities in San Diego County for their continued support. For more than 48 hours, brave Sailors from commands all across San Diego have been working tirelessly alongside Federal Fire San Diego to get this fire under control and I want to thank them for their efforts. I want to provide you with some updates on the progress we have made: First, we have investigated the four main engineering spaces and found no major damage. There is no threat to the fuel tanks, which is wellbelow any active fires or heat sources. The ship is stable and the structure is safe. We still have an active fire, which we are combatting from both within and outside the ship from multiple access points. HSC 3 helicopters have conducted more than 1,000 helicopter water bucket drops, which is cooling the super structure and flight deck enabling fire crews to get onboard internally to fight the fire. Tugs are also provide firefighting support from the waterline. I’m proud of the toughness of the Sailors and Federal Firefighters for making this significant progress possible. At this time there are 61 personnel, 38 U.S. Navy Sailors and 23 civilians, have been treated for minor injuries including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. Currently, there are no personnel hospitalized. Going forward, the Navy will do a thorough investigation of the incident to include assessing the cause of the fire and damage to the ship, but right now our focus remains on putting out the fire and keeping people safe. I’d like to also thank our partners from state and county as well as the Coast Guard for monitoring the potential impacts to the environment. As we continue to fight the fire, we remain cognizant of environmental concerns regarding the water and air quality.

We recommend residents follow county advisories for safety out of an abundance of caution. Thank you again for your being here and we are now ready to take your questions.

As of 6:49 a.m. firefighting teams continue operations continue on board USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) in addition to aerial firefighting operations that commenced via helicopter water bucket at 1:30 a.m. PST with two helicopters from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron THREE.

In the past 48 hours, Federal Fire Department San Diego and U.S. Navy Sailors have conducted numerous firefighting operations, making significant progress with the help of aerial firefighting operations conducted by U.S. Navy helicopters. Crews from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 3 will continue efforts throughout the night.

Below is a statement from Cmdr. Chris Wright, Response Department Head, Coast Guard Sector San Diego.

While the United States Navy continues to effect response actions to quell the fire aboard the USS BONHOMME RICHARD, the United States Coast Guard continues to assess environmental sensitivities and has contracted an Oil Spill Response Organization to preemptively deploy protective boom to guard against any potential environmental concerns.

A one-nautical mile safety zone has been established to ensure the safety of the maritime public. Additionally, a one-nautical mile temporary flight-restriction zone from surface to 3,000 feet altitude has been established to maintain the safety of all firefighting aircraft.

Neighboring marinas are also currently being advised to utilize protective safety measures.

The safety of first responders, protection of the marine environment and the uninterrupted flow of commerce remain the highest concerns to the Coast Guard. Responders will continue to monitor and assess potential environmental concerns and adjust response actions to ensure the safety and security of the maritime public and the marine environment.

UPDATED 9:30 a.m. July 13, 2020: Firefighting teams continue operations on board USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).

Fifty-seven personnel, both U.S. Navy Sailors and civilians, have been treated for minor injuries including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. Of those, five remain hospitalized for observation and are currently in stable condition.

Additionally, aerial firefighting operations commenced via helicopter water bucket at 1:30 a.m. with two helicopters from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron THREE.

As of 1:24 a.m., there are 15 personnel including 13 Sailors and two Federal Fire firefighters, admitted to local hospitals. All are currently in stable condition.

UPDATED 1:34 a.m. July 13, 2020: As of 12:00 a.m. July 13, 2020, there are 16 personnel including 15 Sailors and one Federal Fire firefighter, admitted to local hospitals. All are currently in stable condition.

The firefighting efforts are on board USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) are ongoing.

Further updates will be provided as they become available.

UPDATED 7:00 p.m. July 12, 2020: Federal Fire San Diego is the on-scene lead for firefighting efforts on Naval Base San Diego combatting the fire on USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).

“Currently there are two firefighting teams fighting the fire aboard the ship,” said Federal Fire San Diego Division Chief Rob Bondurant.

“Federal Fire is rotating their crews aboard the ship with U.S. Navy firefighting crews from the waterfront to fight the fire in order to, find the seat of the fire and extinguish it.

Also, Navy Region Southwest tugs are also continuously combatting the fire from the bay” The origin of the fire is still unknown and is pending investigation.

UPDATED 6:46 p.m. July 12, 2020: Sailors reported a fire aboard the wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) while moored pier side at Naval Base San Diego July 12, at approximately 11:30 a.m. eastern daylight time.

Thus far seventeen Sailors and four civilians are being treated for non-life threatening injuries at a local hospital. All crew members have been accounted for.

At approximately 4:00 p.m. the Arleigh Burkeclass guided missile destroyers USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) and USS Russell (DDG 59) shifted berths to a pier further away from the fire.

Bonhomme Richard is in San Diego for a regularly scheduled maintenance availability.
