aturland fördert den ökologischen Landbau weltweit. Aktuell bewirtschaften 38.000 Naturland Erzeuger in 44 Ländern der Welt eine Fläche von über 320.000 Hektar nach den Richtlinien des Verbands. Neben der pflanzlichen und tierischen Erzeugung hat Naturland auch mit der Entwicklung von Richtlinien zur ökologischen Waldnutzung, zur ökologischen Aquakultur und zum nachhaltigen Fischfang Pionierarbeit geleistet.

Hinzu kommen eigene Standards für Kosmetik und Textil. Sozialstandards sind integraler Bestandteil der Naturland Zertifizierung. Mit der Zusatzzertifizierung Naturland Fair vereint Naturland seit 2010 als erster Öko-Anbauverband weltweit Öko & Fair in einem Zeichen – und das für Nord und Süd.

aturland is an Association for organic agriculture and promotes organic farming worldwide. Currently over 38,000 farmers in 44 countries manage some 320,000 hectares according to the Naturland standards. Naturland certification standards range from organic plant and animal production, aquaculture, sustainable capture fishery to processing as well as non-food areas like forest management, cosmetics and textiles. Social standards are an integral part of the Naturland certification. With its supplementary certification Naturland Fair, introduced in 2010, Naturland was the first agricultural association to combine organic and fair trade under one logo which is applied to products from both the north and the south.

Bauern gestalten Zukunft Farmers will shape the future I­

m Jahr 2015 waren nach Angaben der Vereinten Nationen weltweit 244 Millionen Menschen auf der Flucht. Die Fluchtgründe sind vielfältig: Neben Krieg und Vertreibung ist Ausbeutung im „legalen Rahmen“ unseres Wirtschaftssystems eine Ursache, Klimaflucht eine andere.

Umso enttäuschender, dass auf der 21. UNKlimakonferenz im Dezember 2015 in Paris die Landwirtschaft praktisch keine Rolle gespielt hat, obwohl sie für mehr als ein Viertel der weltweiten Treibhausgasemissionen verantwortlich ist. Dass es auch anders geht, macht der Öko-Landbau seit Jahrzehnten erfolgreich vor. Der ökologische Umbau der Landwirtschaft muss deshalb ein zentraler Bestandteil der Strategien im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel werden.

Für diesen notwendigen Umbau engagiert sich Naturland seit über 30 Jahren regional und weltweit.

Derzeit arbeiten 38.000 Naturland Bäuerinnen und Bauern in 44 Ländern der Erde gemeinsam für eine zukunftsfähige Landwirtschaft, die ökologisch ist - und fair. Denn unsere Bauern müssen von ihrer Arbeit auch leben können: in Indien, Uganda oder Honduras ebenso, wie in Deutschland oder Griechenland.

Die vorliegende Broschüre gibt einen Überblick über die Vielfalt des Engagements von Naturland Bäuerinnen und Bauern weltweit für eine wirklich nachhaltige und zukunftsfähige Landwirtschaft.

Zum Erfolg wird dieses Engagement durch Naturland Partner, die Öko-Märkte gemeinschaftlich mit den Erzeugern entwickeln, und nicht zuletzt durch Verbraucher, die gute Lebensmittel wertschätzen.

ccording to figures provided by the United Nations, there were 244 million displaced persons world-wide in 2015. The reasons why the refugees are leaving their home countries are manifold: besides war and persecution, “legally correct” exploitation within our economic system is one such cause, and climate change migration another.

It was therefore all the more disappointing that the role of agriculture was almost completely neglected at the 21st UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, even though it is responsible for over a quarter of global greenhouse emissions. Organic agriculture is living proof that things can be done differently, and has done so successfully for decades now. Conversion of agriculture to organic therefore needs to become a key element of the strategies adopted to combat climate change.

For 30 years now, Naturland has been committed to achieving this crucial transformation in agricultural policy both regionally and on a global scale. Today 38,000 Naturland farmers in 44 countries are working jointly towards establishing a sustainable form of agriculture which is both organic and fair trade.

Our farmers must be able to make a living from their work, whether they be in India, Uganda or Honduras, in Germany or in Greece.

This brochure contains an overview of the many different ways Naturland farmers the world over are demonstrating their commitment to a truly sustainable form of agriculture. Their commitment is converted into a successful outcome by Naturland partners who co-operate with the growers in generating organic markets and, last but not least, by consumers who appreciate top-quality foodstuffs.

Naturland World Advisory Board N N ­

aturland ist ein internationaler Verband von Öko-Bauern. Entsprechend setzt sich die Delegiertenversammlung als höchstes Entscheidungsgremium aus gewählten Vertretern der deutschen wie auch der internationalen Erzeuger zusammen. Um dem internationalen Anspruch von ­Naturland ein noch stärkeres Gewicht zu verleihen, gibt es darüber hinaus das World Advisory Board.

Neben den internationalen Delegierten gehören diesem Beirat weitere Mitglieder an, die auf Vorschlag des ­Naturland Präsidiums von der Delegiertenversammlung gewählt werden.

Die Mitglieder des World Advisory Board repräsentieren das gesamte Spektrum der internationalen Arbeit des Verbands. Ihre Aufgabe ist es, Präsidium und Geschäftsführung in Fragen der internationalen Ausrichtung von ­Naturland zu beraten.

So greift der Beirat in seiner Arbeit Themen auf wie z.B. die Gefahr der Verunreinigung ökologischer Produkte durch gentechnisch ­ manipulierte Organismen in Ländern, wo diese in der konventionellen Landwirtschaft weit verbreitet sind, oder auch das Problem der nachhaltigen Wassernutzung in t rockenen Weltgegenden. Auch Zukunftsfragen ­ wie die ökologische Intensivierung oder die Entwicklung lokaler Öko-Märkte im Süden werden hier behandelt.

aturland is an international association of organic farmers. The assembly of ­delegates, its highest decision-making body, is therefore composed of representatives of both the German and the international growers. In order to accord the international interests even greater weight, a world advisory board has also been constituted.

It is composed of both international delegates and further members who are elected by the assembly of delegates from candidates proposed by the ­Naturland board of directors.

The members of this world advisory board represent the whole spectrum of the association’s international activities. It is the board’s job to counsel the board of directors and general management in questions concerning the international strategy of ­Naturland.

Examples of the board’s work are such topics as the danger of contamination to organic products presented by genetically engineered organisms wherever these are prevalent in conventional agriculture, or the problem of the sustainable use of water in arid areas of the globe. Questions pertaining to future strategies, such as organic intensification or the development of local organic markets, are also discussed here.

Agrarsystem der Zukunft ist Öko und Fair

Die Idee vom ökologischen Landbau, welche die Naturland Gründer vor über 30 Jahren entwickelten, war in doppelter Hinsicht visionär. Zum einen ging es darum, die Art, wie wir uns ernähren und unsere Lebensmittel herstellen, umfassend neu zu gestalten. Das betraf schon damals ökologische, soziale und wirtschaftliche Belange, wie auch kulturelle Aspekte.

Zum anderen entwickelten die Naturland Gründer ihre Vision bereits in der klaren Überzeugung, dass die Zukunft unserer Ernährung im globalen Zusammenhang zu denken und zu gestalten sei.

as damals nahezu revolutionär wirken musste, beschrieb gut 25 Jahre später dann der Weltagrarrat im Weltagrarbericht (2008): die Vision einer bäuerlichen ökologischen Landwirtschaft und des Fairen Handels.

Seither ist quasi hochoffiziell klar: Das Agrarsystem der Zukunft ist Öko und Fair. Auch wenn die politische Praxis dieser Erkenntnis leider meist noch weit hinterher hinkt.

Naturland ist Öko und Fair

Naturland hat mit der Verwirklichung dieser Vision vor rund drei Jahrzehnten begonnen, als in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fairhandelshaus GEPA die weltweit ersten Teeplantagen in Sri Lanka und Indien bzw. Kaffeekooperativen in Mexiko und Peru ökologisch umgestellt wurden. Seit 2010 bringt die Zusatzzertifizierung Naturland Fair höchste Standards aus Öko-Landbau und Fairem Handel in einem Zeichen zusammen. Das Besondere: Bauern aus dem globalen Norden wie dem Süden profitieren davon. Auf dem IFOAM Organic World Congress 2011 in Südkorea wurde Naturland Fair deshalb als weltweit erste „organic double fair“ Zertifizierung gewürdigt.

100 Prozent Naturland ist unser Anspruch

Der Anspruch von Naturland – und letztlich auch die Verbrauchererwartung – ist, dass für das Naturland ausgelobte Produkt möglichst alle Rohstoffe von Naturland Bauern stammen. Naturland kann diesen Anspruch erfüllen, weil Naturland Bäuerinnen und Bauern aus aller Welt eine große Fülle an hochwertigen Rohstoffen in den Markt bringen. Und wenn in einer Tafel Schokolade öko-fairer Kakao aus Peru, öko-fairer Rohrzucker aus Paraguay und öko-faire Milch aus Deutschland verarbeitet werden, dann gewinnen alle – Bauern, Verarbeiter, Handel und

Since then, it has become almost a truism: the food system of the future is organic and fair trade. Even though political practice is unfortunately still lagging far behind when it comes to recognising this fact, in most cases.

Naturland is both organic and fair trade Naturland started to realise this vision some thirty years ago, when in co-operation with GEPA – The Fair Trade Company the world’s first tea gardens in Sri Lanka and India and coffee co-operatives in Mexico and Peru were converted to organic. Since 2010 supplementary certification to Naturland Fair has united the highest standards of organic agriculture and fair trade in one logo. Especially noteworthy is the fact that farmers in both the global north and south are feeling the benefit. At the IFOAM Organic World Congress in 2011 in South Korea, Naturland Fair was therefore recognised as being the first “organic double fair” certification worldwide.

We aspire to 100% Naturland The aspiration of Naturland – and ultimately also what the consumer expects of us – is that all the ingredients of any product bearing the Naturland logo be supplied by Naturland farmers whenever possible. Naturland is able to live up to this endeavour, because Naturland farmers the world over place a wealth of top-quality raw materials on the market.

And if in a bar of chocolate organic fair-trade cocoa from Peru, organic fair-trade cane sugar from Paraguay and organic fair-trade milk from Germany are processed, then it is a win-win situation – for farmers, processers, the trade and the consumer

The idea of organic agriculture, which the founders of Naturland developed over 30 years ago, was visionary in two respects. First of all it dealt with the question of how we could effect a complete reversal in our eating habits and how we produce our foodstuffs. Even at that early stage the idea encompassed organic, social and economic issues as well as cultural aspects. Secondly, the founders of Naturland developed their vision even then with the clear conviction that the future of our food supplies is to be considered and planned in global terms.

Lokale Öko-Märkte fördern

Doch wir wollen mehr. In vielen Ländern des globalen Südens ist heute die Zeit reif, den öko-fairen Landbau stärker mit der Entwicklung der heimischen Märkte zu verbinden. Viele Naturland Bäuerinnen und Bauern sowie Verarbeiter vor Ort forcieren schon heute die Möglichkeiten hierfür. Wir wollen sie zukünftig noch stärker dabei unterstützen. Mit dem Ausbau regionaler Öko-Märkte in den Ländern des Südens wird die Entwicklung des Öko-Landbaus regionalisiert und gestärkt. Zugleich entsteht in diesen Ländern auch eine Import-Nachfrage für andere Öko-Rohstoffe und Produkte, was wiederum anderorts Exportchancen für Erzeuger und Handel bietet. So entstehen abermals Synergieeffekte für alle.

But we want to achieve even more. In many countries of the global south today the time is ripe to make a closer connection between organic, fair-trade agriculture and the development of domestic markets.

Many Naturland farmers and local processors are increasingly taking advantage of such opportunities. We intend to offer them additional support in such projects in the future. With the expansion of regional organic markets in the countries of the global south, the development of organic agriculture will be regionalised and strengthened. At the same time an import demand for other organic raw materials and products is created in these countries too, which in turn affords growers and the trade in other places export opportunities. In this way synergy effects are created in turn for all those involved.

Damit das Schritt für Schritt gelingen kann, bedarf es eines stärkeren Engagements von Verarbeitung und Handel – wie auch der Politik. Der erste Schritt ist dabei, dass unsere Gesellschaft als Ganzes die Vision von Fairem Handel und einer zukunftsfähigen Landwirtschaft nicht mehr länger als Wagnis sieht, sondern als Überlebensprinzip begreift. Der Anspruch von Naturland ist es, die ökologische Landwirtschaft im Norden und Süden auszubauen und dabei entwicklungspolitische Aspekte für den Süden nicht aus dem Auge zu verlieren. Als Verband mit Mitgliedern in 44 Ländern der Welt sind wir dafür gerüstet.

In order for this to succeed step by step, processors and the trade – and politicians too – need to get involved. The first step to achieving this goal is for our society as a whole no longer to regard the vision of fair trade and sustainable agriculture as a risky venture, but to see it as principle of survival. The goal of Naturland is to encourage the expansion of organic agriculture in the global north and south whilst never losing sight of aspects of development policy for the global south. Bananen aus Kleinbauernhand Weltweit stammen mehr als 80 Prozent der für den Export bestimmten Bananen von großen Plantagen. Kleinbauern profitieren nur in den ­seltensten Fällen von diesem Geschäft.

ie Urwald muten die Flächen an, auf denen die N ­aturland Bauern in der Küstenregion im Süden von Ecuador Bananen produzieren. Die Bananenstauden wachsen in Mischkultur zwischen Kakao, Bäumen zur Holzgewinnung, Papaya und anderen Obstbäumen.

Dieser diversifizierte Anbau sorgt für eine langfristig hohe Bodenfruchtbarkeit und trägt zudem zur Verbesserung der Ernährungssituation und Einkommenssicherheit der Familien bei.

Die tragenden Säulen des bewährten Anbausystems sind Stärkung der Pflanzen durch Mulchen und Mischkultur, organische Düngung und mechanische Unkrautbekämpfung. Der Mischanbau verringert den Krankheitsdruck und sorgt für eine hohe Zufuhr an organischem Material, das zusammen mit Gesteinsmehlen, effektiven Mikroorganismen und anderen Stoffen zu konzentrierten organischen Düngern umgewandelt wird. Diese düngen nicht nur die Böden, sondern machen die Bananenstauden auch widerstandsfähiger.

Internes Kontrollsystem sichert Öko-Qualität Die Bauern sind in kleinbäuerlichen Genossenschaften unter dem Dachverband UROCAL organisiert.

UROCAL war die erste Bauernorganisation in Ecuador, die eine biologische Bananenproduktion in Angriff nahm und damit erfolgreich war. Mithilfe von ­Naturland konnte die Genossenschaft ihr internes Kontrollsystem ausbauen und festigen. Die Bananen werden in Deutschland über die Fairhandelsorganisation BanaFair vertrieben. BanaFair setzt sich seit Jahren für eine Verbesserung der ökologischen und sozialen Bedingungen in der Bananenwirtschaft ein.

UROCAL, im Zuge der Agrarreform in Ecuador Anfang der 1970er Jahre entstanden, ist sehr engagiert in Alphabetisierungs- und Bildungsprogrammen und besonders auch in Frauenprojekten. Auch die Verbesserung der Ernährungssituation ist seit langem ein Programmschwerpunkt. 2014 wurde in der Provinzhauptstadt Machala ein kleiner Laden mit frischem Obst und Gemüse im Thekenverkauf und einem Lieferservice für Früchte und Gemüsekisten eröffnet.

hey look like part of the jungle, the areas on which ­Naturland farmers grow bananas, the coastal region in the south of Ecuador. The banana trees grow in mixed cultivation between cocoa plants, trees grown for timber, papaya and other fruit trees. This diversified form of cultivation ensures high long-term soil fertility, and further­ more helps to improve food and income security for the growers’ families.

The pillars of this proven cultivation system encourage plant growth using mulch and mixed cropping, the use of organic fertilisers, and mechanical methods of weed control. Mixed cultivation reduces disease pressure and provides for a good supply of organic material which, combined with stone meal, effective micro-organisms and other substances, is converted into concentrated organic fertilisers.

These not only fertilise the soil but also make the banana trees more resilient.

Internal control system ensures ­organic quality The farmers are organised in smallholders’ cooperatives under UROCAL, their umbrella association. UROCAL was the first farmers’ organisation in Ecuador to tackle the organic production of bananas and make a success of it. With the assistance of Naturland, the co-operative was able to improve ­ and consolidate its internal control system. The bananas are marketed in Germany by BanaFair, a fair-trade organisation. For years now, BanaFair has been campaigning for an improvement in the ecological and social conditions prevalent in the banana industry.

UROCAL, which was founded at the time of Ecuador’s agricultural reform in the 1970s, is greatly involved in literacy and educational schemes and especially in women’s projects. The improvement of local food supply has been an important item on its agenda for a long time now. In 2014 a small shop selling fresh fruit and vegetables and with a delivery service supplying fruit and vegetable boxes was opened in Machala, the capital of the El Oro province.

than German apples. The consequence of these low prices is all too often a deterioration of income and working conditions in the countries where this product is grown.

On a global scale, over 80 percent of the bananas destined for export are grown on large plantations. Smallholders only very rarely derive any benefit from this branch of the business.

Öko und Fair aus einer hand Die Verbindung von Öko und Fair ist mehr als nur ein Trend; beide ­ ehören untrennbar zusammen. Das Bewusstsein hierfür nimmt bei g ­Verbrauchern ebenso wie beim Handel immer mehr zu. ­Naturland ist der ideale Partner, um dieses wachsende Segment zu ­bedienen. Denn mit der N ­ aturland Fair Zertifizierung gibt es beides – Öko und Fair – aus einer Hand.

D

as internationale Engagement von ­Naturland für den Öko-Landbau war schon immer eng verzahnt mit der Idee des Fairen Handels. Seit den 1980er Jahren besteht die enge Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fairhandelshaus GEPA. 2005 führte ­ Naturland als erster deutscher ÖkoVerband verbindliche Sozialstandards ein, im Jahr darauf folgte das Projekt „Faire Partnerschaften“.

Die Einführung von N ­ aturland Fair im Jahr 2010 war der konsequente nächste Schritt auf diesem Weg. he global involvement of N ­ aturland in organic agriculture has always gone hand in hand with the concept of fair trade. It has been in close co-operation with GEPA – The Fair Trade Company since the 1980s. In 2005 ­Naturland became the first German organic association to introduce binding social standards and in the following year this was followed by a project called “Fair Partnerships”.

The introduction of ­Naturland Fair in 2010 was the next logical step in this development. This supplementary certification was developed in co-operation with the fair-trade partners GEPA and dwp eG and it combines organic agriculture, social responsibility and fair trade at every stage of the value-added chain.

Fair trade is effective: ­Naturland partners in the Philippines For PREDA, the Philippine human rights organisation which has been campaigning for human rights and socially fair development for the past 40 years, fair trade is an important tool in their struggle for the rights primarily of indigenous people, women and children. To take one example, this organisation guarantees 260 families an income from the export of pureed organic mangos. The project is currently being converted to the ­Naturland Fair standards.

Für die philippinische Menschenrechtorganisation PREDA, die sich seit 40 Jahren für Menschenrechte und sozial gerechte Entwicklung einsetzt, ist der Faire Handel ein wichtiges Mittel in ihrem Kampf für die Rechte vor allem von Ureinwohnern, Frauen und Kindern. So verschafft die Organisation durch den Export von als Püree verarbeiteten Öko-Mangos über 260 Familien ein Einkommen. Das Projekt ist derzeit in der Umstellung auf N ­ aturland Fair.

Ein wichtiges Exportprodukt der Philippinen ist Rohrzucker. Auf der Insel Negros, der wichtigsten Zuckeranbauregion der Philippinen, gibt die Alter Trade Corporation (ATC) den Zuckerrohrbauern eine Stimme. Der Faire Handel hat den Mitgliedern der Kooperative ermöglicht, eigenes Land zu erwerben und so von Landarbeitern zu Kleinbauern mit eigenen Rechten zu werden.

One important export product in the Philippines is cane sugar. On the island of Negros, the principal sugar-growing region of the Philippines, the cooperative ATC (Alter Trade Corporation) allows the sugar cane farmers to have their own say. Fair trade has enabled the members of the co-operative to acquire their own land, thus advancing from farmhands to smallholders with their own rights.

To take another example, on the island of Panay PFTC (Panay Fair Trade Center) was able to build a new sugar cane factory in 2015 with the help of fair trade partners; it is the only one in the Capiz region which is in the hands of smallholders. With assistance from ­Naturland, production is to be ­converted now to organic and fair trade. The e ­ xamples of these ­Naturland partners in the Philippines demonstrate the diversity of the positive developments which fair trade can facilitate.

Auf der Insel Panay wiederum hat das Panay Fair Trade Center (PFTC) 2015 mit Hilfe von Fairhandelspartnern eine neue Zuckerrohrfabrik bauen können – die einzige in der Region Capiz, die in den Händen von Kleinbauern ist. This applies just as much to agriculture in the global north. This is why ­Naturland also ­includes the north in its fair trade certification scheme ­Naturland Fair.

Langfristige, vertrauensvolle Lieferbeziehungen und ein gemeinschaftliches Qualitätsmanagementsystem sind auch die Grundlage der erfolgreichen Kooperation zwischen ­ Naturland Ackerbauern und dem ­Naturland Fair Partner Hofpfisterei, der traditionsreichsten Bio-Bäckerei Münchens. Die Landwirte bekommen faire Preise und Absatzsicherheit für ihr Öko-Getreide, die Hofpfisterei eine verlässliche, regionale Rohstoffbasis.

­Naturland Fair establishes a link between farmers in the global north and south Farmers in the global south also benefit from the Naturland Fair concept being propagated in the ­ global north. And GEPA was able to introduce its first entirely fair-trade milk chocolate to the market thanks to N ­ aturland Fair; it is made of fair trade organic cocoa from the Dominican Republic, fair-trade organic sugar from Paraguay and fair-trade organic milk from Berchtesgadener Land.

Sicherheit statt Anonymität – das ­Naturland Qualitäts­prinzip

ualitätssicherung fängt auf den Betrieben an. Wir kennen unsere Betriebe – weltweit. ­Naturland ist eine Gemeinschaft von Bauern, die in 44 Ländern der Erde hochwertige ÖkoLebensmittel nach den gleichen strengen Richtlinien erzeugen. Die Naturland Qualitätssicherung überwacht, dass diese Richtlinien ­ überall verstanden und einheitlich umgesetzt werden – von Erzeugern wie auch von verarbeitenden Unternehmen, den N ­ aturland Partnern. Überprüft wird diese Umsetzung durch unabhängige Kontrollstellen, die neben den jährlichen Inspektionen auch unangemeldete und risikoorientierte Stichprobenkontrollen durchführen. Dabei ist gerade im internationalen Bereich die Qualität der Kontrollstelle von entscheidender Bedeutung. N ­ aturland arbeitet nur mit ausgesuchten Kontrollstellen zusammen, deren Mitarbeiter zudem regelmäßig von uns geschult werden. ­ aturland selbst unterwirft sich ebenfalls der externen Kontrolle.

N Die Akkreditierung nach der international anerkannten Norm ISO/ IEC 17065 dokumentiert Glaubwürdigkeit und Transparenz unseres Zertifizierungssystems.

Warenrückverfolgbarkeit bis zum Erzeuger Zu unseren Verfahren im Rahmen der Qualitätssicherung (QS) gehört auch, dass N ­ aturland zusätzlich zur Öko-Kontrolle selbst QS-Besuche auf den Betrieben macht. Dafür hat der Verband vor Ort eigene Vertreter, die mit den lokalen Verhältnissen bestens vertraut sind. Darüber hinaus besuchen unsere international erfahrenen Mitarbeiter der ­Naturland Zentrale regelmäßig die Mitgliedsbetriebe in aller Welt.

Diese enge Anbindung unserer internationalen Mitgliedsbetriebe an den Verband ist ein ganz wesentlicher Aspekt unserer Qualitätssicherung und unterscheidet ­Naturland zertifizierte Ware von den vielen mehr oder weniger anonymen Bio-Importen, die gerade auf dem deutschen Markt zunehmend zu finden sind.

Internal Control System (ICS) Um auch Kleinbauern den Zugang zur Öko-Zertifizierung zu ermöglichen, hat N ­ aturland bereits Mitte der 1990er Jahre ein internes Kontrollsystem für Erzeugergenossenschaften entwickelt. Dabei überprüfen eigens ausgebildete interne Inspektoren der Kooperative jeden einzelnen Erzeuger auf die Einhaltung der N ­ aturland Richtlinien.

Der externe Inspektor überprüft, ob das interne Kontrollsystem einwandfrei funktioniert, inklusive risikobasierter Stichproben direkt bei einzelnen Erzeugern. Außerdem checkt er die Abläufe in der Verarbeitung und Vermarktung sowie den Warenfluss von der Ernte bis zum Export im Hafen.

Rückverfolgbarkeit bis zum Erzeuger: Dieses Prinzip gilt auch dann, wenn einzelne Öko-Rohwaren, wie z.B. Sesam, gerade nicht in originärer N ­ aturland Qualität verfügbar sind. In diesem Fall sorgen unsere festgelegten Freigabeverfahren mit klar definierten Qualitätsstufen dafür, Rohstoffknappheiten zu überbrücken, ohne dass dabei Qualität oder Sicherheit leiden.

Q

uality assurance starts on the farms themselves. We know our farmers, wherever in the world they may be. ­Naturland is a community of farmers who produce top quality organic foodstuffs in accordance with identical stringent standards in 44 countries the world over. The ­Naturland quality assurance system is used to monitor its members, ensuring that these standards are universally understood and applied in a uniform manner, both by the growers and by the processors, the ­Naturland partners.

Independent inspection bodies are appointed to monitor the implementation of the standards. Besides their regular annual inspection tours, they also make unannounced, risk-orientated spot checks. The quality of the inspection bodies themselves is of crucial importance, particularly in the international field. ­Naturland co-operates only with carefully selected inspection bodies, and we offer their inspectors courses of instruction on a regular basis.

Internal Control System (ICS) In order to enable even smallholders to acquire organic certification, ­Naturland developed an internal control system for growers’ co-operatives back in the mid1990s. The system is so designed that members of the ­co-operative are trained as internal inspectors who then go out to inspect every single grower for compliance with the ­Naturland standards.

The external inspector checks to see whether the internal control system is working correctly, a procedure which includes unannounced random risk-based spot-checks of individual growers. Besides this, the external inspector scrutinises the processing and marketing procedures and the flow of goods from harvest to export from the domestic port.

Naturland itself also submits to inspection by an external body. ­Accreditation to the internationally recognised norm ISO/IEC 17065 documents the credibility and transparency of our certification system.

Security instead of anonymity – the ­Naturland qualityconcept Traceability back to the producer One of our quality assurance (QA) measures is for ­Naturland to pay its own QA visits to farms in addition to the organic inspection tours. To do so, ­Naturland has its own representatives in the area who are wholly familiar with local conditions. Besides this, the ­Naturland head office sends staff with experience in the international field to pay regular visits to member farms throughout the world.

This close connection between the association and our member farms the world over is a key aspect of our quality assurance and distinguishes the produce certified to the N ­ aturland standards from the many more or less anonymous organic imports which are to be found today in increasing measure on the German market.

Traceability right back to the grower: this principle also applies where individual organic ingredients, such as sesame seeds, for example, are currently not available in original N ­ aturland quality. In such cases, the rules of our release process, with its clearly defined quality grades, help processors to overcome periods of scarcity in certain raw goods without them having any negative impact on the quality or reliability of their produce.

Wildkaffee – ­ kostbare Kirschen aus dem Regenwald ­Naturland Bauern kultivieren Kaffee normalerweise in waldähnlichen Agroforstsystemen unter Schattenbäumen. In der Region Kaffa in Äthiopien wird darüber hinaus ein ganz besonderer Kaffee von wildwachsenden Sträuchern im Regenwald gesammelt.

as ehemalige Königreich Kaffa im Südwesten Äthiopiens ist die ursprüngliche Heimat des Kaffees. Einzig in den dortigen Bergnebelwäldern wächst er bis heute in seiner Wildform. Die äthiopischen Wildkaffee-Wälder gehören zu den weltweit 34 Hotspots biologischer Vielfalt und wurden 2010 als UNESCO-Biosphärenreservat anerkannt. Seit Jahrhunderten sammeln die Menschen dort Wildkaffee, Honig und Gewürze.

Heute sind nur noch 2,7 Prozent der Landfläche Äthiopiens waldbedeckt. Die sinnvolle und nachhaltige Nutzung dieser Gebiete ist von zentraler Bedeutung, denn sie schafft Anreize für die Bauern, den wertvollen Regenwald zu schützen.

Wild gesammelt – streng kontrolliert Biodiversität wird bei N ­ aturland aber auch im kultivierten Kaffeeanbau ­großgeschrieben.

Die Kaffeesträucher wachsen – oft gemeinsam mit anderen Kulturen wie Bananen oder Zitrusfrüchten – in Agroforst­systemen unter Schattenbäumen. Im Jahr 2015 wurden so insgesamt 47.000 Tonnen ­Naturland zertifizierter Kaffee von K ­ leinbauern in Äthiopien, Bolivien, Honduras, Indien, Mexiko, Nicaragua, Papua-Neuguinea, Peru und Tansania produziert.

he former province of Kaffa in the southwest of Ethiopia was the original home of coffee. In its wild state it can today only be found in this region’s mountain cloud forests. The Ethiopian wild coffee forests are one of the world’s 34 biodiversity hotspots and in 2010 they were recognised as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. For centuries people have been harvesting wild coffee, honey and spices here. Today only 2.7 percent of Ethiopia’s land area is forest-covered. It is crucial that these areas be put to wise and sustainable use because this encourages farmers to conserve the precious rain forest.

Wild harvesting – stringent controls In order to prevent harvesting from having any negative effects on the nature reserve, wild harvesting is subject to strict control. The quantities allowed and the areas where harvesting is permitted are exactly defined. The over 4,000 harvesters of the wild coffee certified to the ­Naturland standards un-

Naturschutz und zukunftsweisende Perspektiven für die Menschen lassen sich so auf Dauer miteinander vereinen.

Harvest the single ripe, red coffee cherries one by one in the rain forest is slow, hard work. The trees grow as high as eight metres and have widespreading branches, the cherries do not all ripen at the same time and the yield is some 50 percent less than for the strains bred for growth in plantations.

But wild coffee is much sought-after. Ideal conditions necessary for growth, the diversity of the wild varieties, low yield, gentle harvesting by hand and sun-drying give the coffee a unique flavour.

Certification to the ­Naturland Fair standards helps the farmers to sell the dried, green coffee profitably, for a comparatively high price and through direct channels. This policy succeeds in combining long-term nature conservation with the prospect of positive future developments for the farmers.

Mit Beginn der wirtschaftlichen Krise ist der Trend umgekehrt: auf der Suche nach einem Ausweg aus der Arbeits­ losigkeit kehren heute auch viele junge, gebildete Griechen zurück auf das Land ihrer Eltern. Das Potenzial für den ökologischen Landbau ist groß, das zeigen viele hunderte griechische N ­ aturland Bauern, die schon seit Jahrzehnten Bio-Produkte exportieren.

Organic opportunities for Greece For centuries, Greeks left their villages for the towns which held promise of a b ­ etter life.

With the start of the economic crisis, the trend was reversed: in an attempt to escape unemployment, many young, well-educated Greeks are today returning to their native soil.

The potential for organic agriculture is vast, as is proven by the many h ­ undreds of Greek ­Naturland farmers who have been exporting organic produce for decades now.

I

n der Mani im Süden der griechischen Halbinsel Peloponnes, stellten in den vergangenen 35 Jahren über 300 kleinbäuerliche Betriebe ihre Olivenhaine auf ökologische Bewirtschaftung um und vermarkten seither ihre hochwertigen Oliven an das Familienunternehmen Mani Bläuel. Das Unternehmen brachte 1991 das erste griechische Bio-Olivenöl überhaupt in die deutschen Natur­ kostläden – schon damals mit ­ Naturland Zertifizierung. Heute ist ein Großteil der Produkte auch ­Naturland Fair zertifiziert.

Der ökologische Anbau war eine interessante Alternative für die Bauern, zumal Bläuel faire Preise und Absatzgarantien bot. Zuvor hatten die Bauern ihr Olivenöl noch zu Niedrigstpreisen nach Italien verkauft.

I

n Mani, a region in the south of the Greek ­peninsula, the Peloponnese, over 300 small-scale farmers have converted their olive groves to organic over the past 35 years and since then have been selling their prime-quality olives to Mani Bläuel, a family-run enterprise. In 1991 this enterprise introduced the first Greek organic olive oil ever to German health-food stores and even back then it was certified to ­Naturland standards. Today most of the products are certified to the ­Naturland Fair standards, too.

Organic agriculture was an interesting alternative for the farmers, especially since Bläuel offers fair prices and sales guarantees. Before then, the farmers were still selling their olive oil to Italy for knock-down prices.

Greece has much to offer

Auf der Biofach 2015 feierte sie ihr zehnjähriges ­Naturland Jubiläum.

Aus der Region Kozani, in der mazedonischen Ebene kommt der rote Safran, der weltweit zu den hochwertigsten gehört. Über 130 N ­ aturland Erzeuger der Krokos Kozani Kooperative pflanzen dort auf kleinsten Flächen Safran an, ernten die wunderschönen Blüten von Hand und zupfen die roten Fäden aus den Blüten – kostbare Exportgüter.

Auf Kreta, der Peloponnes, im Nordwesten Griechen­lands und in Zypern kultivieren rund 100 kleinbäuerliche Familienbetriebe Zitrusfrüchte und anderes Obst, Oliven und Gemüse für den Export.

Die Bauern sind in der Erzeugergemeinschaft Biocyclic Network organisiert.

Vervollständigt wird die Palette der griechischen ­Naturland Delikatessen mit Wolfsbarsch und Meerbrassen aus N ­ aturland Aquakultur vom Fischereibetrieb Kefalonia Fisheries auf der Insel Kefalonia und der Galaxidi Marine Farm am Golf von Korinth, in Mittelgriechenland.

This dairy was the first one in Greece to manufacture organic milk products and it celebrated its tenth anniversary as a member of ­Naturland at the Biofach trade fair in 2015.

From the region of Kozani, on the Macedonian plane, comes red saffron, which is of extremely high quality.

Over 130 ­Naturland farmers, members of the Kozani Saffron Producers Cooperative, cultivate crocuses on even the tiniest of plots, harvest the beautiful blossoms by hand and pluck the red strands from these blossoms to obtain this precious export commodity.

Besides olives, citrus fruits are an important export product, too.

On the island of Crete, the Peloponnese peninsula, in the north-west of Greece and in Cyprus currently some 100 organic smallholders’ farms are cultivating citruses and other fruit, olives and vegetables for export. The growers are organised in the Biocyclic Network, an organic marketing association.

The range of fine foods from Greece certified to the ­Naturland standards would not be complete without mentioning the sea bass and sea bream produced according to the N ­ aturland aquaculture standards by Kefalonia Fisheries on the island of Kefalonia and by the Galaxidi Marine Farm on the Gulf of Corinth in Central Greece.

Auch die Zucht in konventioneller Aquakultur bringt erhebliche Umweltbelastungen mit sich. ­Naturland Shrimps werden heute in Öko-Aquakulturen in Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, Honduras, Vietnam, Bangladesch und Indonesien aufgezogen. Niedrige Besatzdichten, Verbot von Antibiotika und anderen Chemotherapeutika, Öko-Futter sowie tiergerechte Zuchtverfahren folgen unserer Logik einer umweltverträglichen Shrimps-Produktion.

In derzeit 17 Ländern wachsen die Tiere in artgerechten, ­naturnahen Anlagen auf.

Zur Umweltverträglichkeit gehören dabei auch der konsequente Schutz und die Wiederaufforstung der ökologisch wertvollen Mangrovenwälder. Bei Naturland ist dies ein zentraler Bestandteil der ­ Richtlinien. Das Ergebnis lässt sich beispielsweise in Ecuador beobachten, wo seit 2001 mehr als 440 Hektar Mangroven dauerhaft wiederaufgeforstet worden sind. Das verschafft den Kleinbauern und ihren Familien ein zusätzliches Einkommen.

n the case of seafood such as prawns and shrimps, fishing from wild stock is particularly problematic, whilst a side effect of breeding under conventional aquaculture is that it causes considerable ecological damage. ­Naturland shrimps are reared in organic aquaculture systems in Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, Honduras, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Indonesia. Low stocking densities, the prohibition of antibiotics and other chemotherapeutic agents, organic feed and humane breeding procedures comply with our understanding of ecofriendly shrimp production.

One feature of environmental compatibility is the rigorous protection and reafforestation of the ecologically valuable mangrove forests. ­Naturland has made this a key element of the standards. The results can be seen in Ecuador, for example, where over 440 hectares of mangroves have been permanently reafforested since 2001.

Environmentally and socially ­sustainable Another feature, besides the environmental aspect, is that of social sustainability: for many smallholders, such as the 1,000 members of OSP, Organic Shrimp Project, in Bangladesh, certification to the N ­ aturland standards affords them access to the export market, protecting them from exploitative intermediaries and ensuring them a reliable income. Besides these advantages, shrimps reared in extensive organic farms are eminently suitable for polyculture projects, where other crustaceans and fish are reared in the same ponds, for the farmers’ own consumption or for sale on local markets. This creates additional income for the smallholders and their families.

Sustainable aquaculture management

Since their establishment in the mid-1990s, the ­Naturland organic standards for aquaculture have developed to ­become the most important in the industry.

Some 15 species are ­certified to ­these standards, ranging from ­German freshwater fish such as trout, carp and salmon, Mediterranean species such as gilthead sea bream and sea bass, tropical freshwater fish (pangasius, tilapia), to prawns, mussels and even various types of algae. There are now 17 countries where fish farming is practised in systems with semi-natural environments appropriate to the ­respective species.

Only organic aquaculture makes a real contribution to the preservation of our marine resources. What is important is the source of the feed: under ­Naturland, fish meal and fish oil used in the feed are the waste produced when food fish are processed and are not, as normal elsewhere, a product of industrial fishing specifically for feed production.

as N ­ aturland Engagement für eine nachhaltige Fischerei nahm seinen Anfang in Tansania am Viktoriasee. Gemeinsam mit der Gesellschaft für technische Zusammenarbeit GTZ (heute GIZ), dem Seafood Importeur ANOVA und dem Verarbeiter VicFish entwickelte ­Naturland die weltweit erste Zertifizierung einer nachhaltigen, handwerklichen Seenfischerei. Das ehrgeizige Ziel: den Viktoriabarsch nachhaltig zu befischen, das Öko-System des Sees zu schützen und die Lebensbedingungen der Kleinfischer zu verbessern. Dafür reglementieren die N ­ aturland Wildfisch Richtlinien seit 2009 detailliert Fanggeräte und Fangpraxis sowie soziale Rahmenbedingungen.

he involvement of N ­ aturland in sustainable fishing started in Tanzania, at Lake Victoria.

In co-operation with the German development agency GTZ (now GIZ), ANOVA (an importer of seafood) and VicFish (a processing company), ­Naturland developed the world’s first ever certification to standards for sustainable, artisanal lake fishing. The ambitious goal was to make the fishing of Victoria perch sustainable, to protect the lake’s ecosystem and to improve the living conditions of the small-scale fishers. To achieve this aim, the N ­ aturland Wildfish standards, drawn up in 2009, provide detailed specifications as to the fishing gear and fishing practises allowed as well as social conditions.

Today, this certification enables over 1,000 fisher families along the southern and western shores of Lake Victoria to earn a regular income. Besides this, these people benefit from the social projects run by local partners of ­Naturland. In addition to the permanent availability of safe drinking water and medical treatment, the guidelines governing these projects encourage the establishment of k ­ indergartens and schools for the fishers’ children and provide literacy courses for the adults. Transparent pricing and the verified calibration of scales ensure that the fishers are not longer duped by middlemen as they were before.

Öko und Fair ernährt mehr

Eine Milliarde Menschen hungern heute schon – bald werden neun Milliarden essen wollen. Die Menschen wollen mehr Fleisch essen, auf den Feldern muss Energie wachsen.

Die Ackerfläche ist kaum vermehrbar. Also braucht es eine ­Intensivierung ­landwirtschaftlicher Produktion. „Zweite Grüne Revolution“ nennen das die Strategen aus den Konzernen der Agrarindustrie.

ie meinen damit ein Geschäftsmodell, das mit mehr Düngern und Pestiziden und zusätzlich mittels gentechnisch veränderter Pflanzen und Tiere die Produktivität landwirtschaftlicher Erzeugung steigern soll. Mehr Tonnen je Hektar, mehr Schweine je Stall. Das klingt folgerichtig und logisch, ist es aber nicht. Bereits ein Blick auf die tatsächlichen Ursachen des Hungers zeigt, dass Produktivität gar nicht das Problem ist.

W

hat they mean by this term is a business model which is designed to increase agricultural yields by applying more fertilisers and pesticides and by introducing genetically engineered plants and livestock. More tons per hectare, more pigs per piggery. That sounds like the logical conclusion, but it is not. One short look at the actual causes of world hunger shows that the problem is not productivity.

Der Klimawandel ist eine weitere Ursache für Hunger, die ebenso von Menschen verursacht ist wie Erosion oder Versalzung, die jedes Jahr zehn Millionen Hektar fruchtbaren Bodens vernichten. Zudem landet die Hälfte unserer Agrarerzeugnisse im Müll.

Und die heutige Weltgetreideernte würde als Futter nicht reichen, wenn alle Menschen so viel Fleisch essen wollten wie wir. All das zeigt, wo die wahren Reserven liegen.

So wenig, wie mangelnde Produktivität die Hauptursache des Hungers ist, so wenig ist ein System industrieller Landwirtschaft zukunftsfähig. Es verbraucht mehr Ressourcen, als uns zur Verfügung stehen. Angesichts schwindender Reserven fossiler Energie ist eine Landwirtschaft, deren entscheidender Treibstoff mit hohem Energieeinsatz erzeugter Stickstoff ist, kaum zukunftsfähig.

Kleinbauern bei der ökologischen Intensivierung unterstützen Diese Diagnose führt zu einer unumgänglichen Therapie: Unsere Landwirtschaft muss ökologisch werden und unsere Ernährungsweise dazu. Auch immer mehr Organisationen der Entwicklungshilfe oder der Vereinten Nationen drängen darauf, auf

The cause is abysmal governments, wars and the unfair distribution of land and incomes which obstruct access to food supplies. Climate change is another source of hunger, which is just as man-made as erosion or salination, both of which destroy ten million hectares of fertile soil every year. Besides this, half of our agricultural produce lands in the rubbish bin.

And, were everyone want to eat as much meat as we do ourselves, the total world cereal yield would not even suffice to provide enough fodder. All this goes to show where the true reserves to be tapped lie.

As incorrect as it is to claim that poor productivity is the main reason for hunger, it is just as erroneous to claim that industrial agriculture is a sustainable system. This system actually requires more resources than what is available to us. In the light of dwindling reserves of fossil fuels, a form of agriculture the key fuel of which is nitrogen produced at high energy consumption can hardly be described as sustainable.

Helping smallholders with organic intensification A diagnosis of the ailments indicates the following inevitable therapy be applied: conversion to organic ­agriculture and a change in our eating habits, too.

Foreign aid organisations and the United Nations too are increasingly urging the adoption of intensive organic farming methods rather than the prevalent solution favoured in the global west, that of the industriali­sation of agriculture.

Organic and Fair more food to share

Today there are one billion people threatened by starvation, and soon we shall have nine billion mouths to feed. The trend is towards increased meat consumption, and we are turning to our fields to grow fuel crops. We have very few options to increase the area of arable land available. As a consequence measures are being adopted to intensify agricultural production. The strategists in the corporations of the agricultural industry are talking about a “second green revolution”.

Organic agriculture, as it has developed in Europe, points in the right direction. It is a new and innovative form of agriculture which combines scientific findings with the farmers’ practical experience. And it includes the concept of fair trading relationships which allow farmers to earn a reliable income and help to establish essential infrastructure projects.

Naturland has been pursuing all these aims for some 30 years now. Some 35,000 smallholders throughout the world, ranging from coffee farmers in Latin America to fishers in Lake Victoria, East Africa, and members of tea co-operatives in India, all work to the same stringent standards of the association in the same way as do the almost 3,000 German members. They are all working towards the common goal of promoting organic farming, a sustainable form of agriculture.

Gelingen kann dieser unabdingbare landwirtschaftliche Kurswechsel indes nur, wenn der Preis von konventionell erzeugten Lebensmitteln endlich seine ökologische und soziale Wahrheit spricht. Dann wäre der Öko-Landbau als die Produktionsweise mit den geringsten Folgekosten für die Allgemeinheit konkurrenzfähiger.

However, this agricultural reorientation, which is an imperative requirement, can only succeed if the price of conventionally produced foodstuffs at last makes public the ecological and social truth of the conditions under which they are farmed. It would then become apparent to all that organic agriculture is a viable competitive alternative, being the method of production with the lowest subsequent costs, for which the general public foots the bill.

Naturland now represented on the Ivory Coast Ivoire Organics, a growers’ co-operative on the Ivory Coast, in 2015 became the first member to attain certification to the Naturland standards in this country. Naturland pineapples, coconuts, mangos and cashew nuts are cultivated here on an area of 1,150 hectares. Certification to the Naturland standards gives the farmers access to improved marketing opportunities resulting in a higher income.

­Naturland leistet Umstellungs­ beratung von Kaffeekooperativen in Burundi In Kooperation mit der Fairhandelsgenossenschaft dwp eG berät ­Naturland seit 2015 ein Pilotprojekt zur Umstellung von mehreren Kaffeekooperativen in Burundi. Dabei stehen die Hilfestellung bei dem Aufbau und der Entwicklung eines internen Kontrollsystems (ICS) als Voraussetzung für die Bio-Zertifizierung und der Aufbau von lokal angepassten Agroforstsystemen im Vordergrund.

Naturland provides advisory services in Burundi to coffee co-operatives in conversion Since 2015 Naturland has been providing advisory services to a pilot project for the conversion of several coffee co-operatives in Burundi, in co-operation with the Fair Trade Co-operative dwp eG. The main focus here is on helping with the establishment and development of an internal control system (ICS) which is a prerequisite for organic certification, and to establish agro-forestry systems adapted to local conditions.
