s many of you already know, Elaine and I are plant medicine advocates.

Whether it’s CBD or essential oils for anxiety, THC for pain relief, or psychedelics for deep spiritual and emotional healing, we believe that with proper, safe administration, plant medicines are incredible at healing us on so many levels.

When Elaine asked me to write the letter from the editor this month, I was like, oh boy. What on earth could I write about that might be uplifting or inspiring? The truth is, I’ve been going through a rough patch lately. It’s like I’ve been stuck in a dark, cold tunnel and can’t seem to find my way out.

The first time Elaine and I visited Rythmia Life Advancement Institute in Costa Rica in 2016, we got the opportunity to sit with amazing shamans and drink psychedelic plant medicines in ceremony on the most transformational vacation either of us had ever taken. Those of you who’ve sat with plant medicines know that these journeys can get really dark and intense at times. But, oh my, they can be so profoundly bright and beautiful, too. I remember discussing one of my first journeys with Elaine. I told her about the darkness I encountered—including some creepy clowns—mixed with strong, painful emotions and repressed memories from my childhood. I also felt the most magnificent, cosmic bliss and a connection with the Universe that I’d never experienced before. The joy I felt was immense. I tried to explain all the beautiful visuals I saw and the healing themes that kept cropping up. Elaine’s response? “I didn’t see any colors. I didn’t see any clowns. All I got was an ass-kicking!”

As true in ceremony as it is in our regularly scheduled lives—sometimes, all we get is an ass-kicking. I seem to be getting one now as I flounder my way through some residual emotional pains that followed me into the New Year. Sometimes excruciatingly painful feelings crop up and rather than crawl into my meditation space to see where they want to take me, I bolt in the opposite direction to find some outside distraction—afraid of the silence, perhaps afraid if I sit still long enough, I might see one of those creepy clowns.

Life is freaking hard at times—hearts get broken, accidents happen, people and pets pass away—and when you’re going through one of these phases, it really knocks the wind out of you! I’m thankful that Elaine reminded me over email today that I can always turn to the plants for healing. Even though I’ve been using them, I could (and will) be relying on them even more. I’ve also just realized I haven’t been reflecting on the wisdom I gleaned while under the influence of medicinal plants. There is a lot of sage advice scribbled in my journey journals that I really need to take to heart. One of the biggest takeaways? It’s OK to allow my heart to break because there is so much beauty in the ability to feel so much. And my personal favorite? I am a beautiful magnificent being of light and I love myself unconditionally.

When we go through dark tunnels, sometimes all we can do is move slowly forward, keeping one hand on the wall, while putting one foot in front of the other. In the meantime, we can find plenty of ways for Mother Nature to help heal us. Whether it’s a transformative trip to a plant medicine focused healing sanctuary, a visit to a dispensary for a tincture, a solo walk through an old growth forest—the plants are always ready and willing to help.

At some point, the light at the end of this tunnel I’m in will get brighter. Soon, a warm breeze will rush in, letting me know that I’m very close. When I finally step outside and feel that delicious sunshine on my skin, I’ll look back at the tunnel and be thankful I survived it. I may even be grateful for lessons learned. Until then, I’ll put one foot in front of the other, and be on the lookout for creepy clowns.

First Commercial E-Plane Makes History

Electric propulsion has long been a goal of aviation manufacturers to lessen the carbon footprint of air travel.

On December 11, Vancouver, Canada-based Harbour Air launched the first successful test flight of an all-electric aircraft. Founder and CEO Greg McDougall piloted a 1956 de Havilland Beaver seaplane, rechristened the ePlane. Retrofitted with a 750-horsepower magni500 motor by MagniX, it took off from a dock on the Fraser River in Richmond, British Columbia, and flew for four minutes. The certification process will take one to two years. After that, the retrofits of the company’s existing fleet of small planes can begin. The challenge for airlines seeking to go green with large aircraft is that current technology leaves electric engines relatively weak for their weight and they have a short battery life, but these factors do not deter Harbour Air, which went carbon-neutral in 2007 and flies mostly short hops in the Northwest.

Jose Cuervo, the bestselling tequila maker globally, has initiated an ecofriendly process of salvaging the leftover agave fibers from its distilling process and upcycling them into a more sustainable alternative to regular plastic straws. The biodegradable drinking straw will decompose up to 200 times faster than regular plastic. The Feel-Good Molecule

CBD, a compound extracted from the hemp plant, is appealing because it can raise the level of cannabinoids—feel-good molecules naturally created within the human body. “When we can’t sleep or are stressed out, cannabinoid levels go way down,” Bongiorno says. While prescription drugs overwhelm the body with adverse side effects, CBD can healthfully bring back balance.

But CBD won’t trigger an altered state because there is little to no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive chemical in marijuana that produces a high, he says, adding that he starts patients at a low daily dose of 25 milligrams.

It’s important to talk with a physician about drug interactions, Bongiorno says. For instance, CBD can increase levels of blood-thinning medications, according to a 2017 study published in Epilepsy & Behavior Case Reports.

CBD can possibly treat a wide range of conditions, from fear of public speaking to bipolar and post-traumatic stress disorders, but more research is needed, experts say. A 2018 clinical trial published in JAMA Psychiatry suggests CBD offers potential in treating psychosis. More recently, researchers in a 2019 case study of 27 patients published by the Permanente Journal concluded, “Cannabidiol may hold benefit for anxiety-related disorders.”

Seeds of Hope

The most important step consumers can take to find a safe, quality product is to know where their CBD comes from, experts say. Lara Miller is an organic farmer in Lafayette, Colorado, who in 2017 dedicated a parcel of her two-acre farm to growing hemp for her business, North Field Farmacy. “I added in hemp because

it is a dynamic plant that produces fiber, seed and medicine for us humans, all at the same time,” she says.

Miller’s small, women-owned business grows the leafy plants outdoors in organic soil and harvests by hand. “We test in the field, post-harvest, during extraction and in the final product,” she says. “We know our product is clean and pure and potent.”

This isn’t always the case. A 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that in 84 CBD products sold online by 31 companies, 26 percent contained less CBD than the amount listed on the label.

Miller receives weekly calls from those wanting to purchase her plants and start a CBD business. “What bothers me the most is that not one person has asked how my hemp is grown,” she says. “It all feels like a big grab; the integrity isn’t there.”

Miller continues to decline these requests and spends her days on the farm, where—come harvest time—she, alongside her crew, engages in some visualizations. “We imagine the people suffering who need support and think about how we are growing the plants to help them.”

After the initial burst of energy, the weakest glands or organs of the body find themselves depleted of minerals. The adrenal glands, being the strongest in the body, come to the rescue by going into overdrive, releasing excess adrenaline which results in hyperactivity.

Hyperactivity can manifest differently in children due to a difference in body types. For instance, an Adrenal body type with an inquiring mind and physical approach, will get into everything because they want to be in the middle of the action.

A child with a Heart body type is sensitive and directed by their emotions rather than their thoughts; they will be easily distracted by everything that is going on around them.

Body type is determined before birth but is not hereditary. While there are certain body types like Gonadal and Stomach that run in families, most families have parents and children with different body types. This is why children have different temperaments than their parents. This is also why not everyone likes the same foods or feels good after eating them.

Knowing the body type of your children can help balance their nutrition to maximize health and minimize hyperactivity.
