Healy (KC Chiropractic & Wellness in Madison), a 23-year veteran in chiropractic care and applied kinesiology. Dr. Healy shares his philosophy of care and discusses the “true value” of chiropractic care as a modality to help achieve and maintain overall wellness, not just treat neck and back pain. I had my first adjustment back in 1999 for severe neck and shoulder pain and was impressed by its effectiveness. However, back then, I only went to a chiropractor whenever I experienced acute pain from an injury. Years later, I went to a chiropractor again when I had a work-related injury and developed pain in my shoulder and arm that was the worst I had ever experienced. Once the acute pain was relieved, I decided to continue having treatments once a month as part of my overall wellness plan and have continued regular monthly visits for 15 years. Achieving wellness is not a one-time quick fix. It is an ongoing process.

We all know that well-being is significantly influenced by our emotional state.

Mindfulness is a healthy practice that allows us to fully appreciate the present and let go of our preoccupation and anxiety about the past and future. I learned Transcendental Meditation (TM) when I was 14 years old, which reduced anxiety and helped me focus better in school. That was 45 years ago. Finally, mindfulness training has gained momentum, not just in the U.S. but in more than 100 countries, as you will read in this month’s Healthy Kids feature. The rise in mindfulness training is based on research that has shown evidence of the positive effects of mindfulness on developing brains. Mindfulness training has benefited people of all ages and walks of life. For instance, there is a strong body of scientific research on the impact of TM programs on prisoners, as evidenced by the positive effect on behavior within the prison and a significant decrease in recidivism once the detainees have been released from prison. The explanation for this is based on the effect that TM has on the frontal lobe of the brain, which controls higher thoughtfunctionality, such as long-term planning, moral reasoning, and deciding whether something is right or wrong. Imagine what our world would be like if everyone practiced mindfulness!

Those who have challenges focusing during meditation, would benefit from guided meditation, which can be done in group sessions or on a one-to-one basis. Our community calendar has several listings for guided meditation groups. This fall, a new alternative healing center, Dandelion Wellness, will be opening in Branford. Founder Anna Meglin will be offering meditation groups along with workshops and classes focused on mind and body wellness along with several other holistic modalities (See news brief on page 7).

Griffin Hospital to Study Fecal Microbial Transplant in Adults with Multiple Sclerosis

C

an changing the intestinal bacteria be an effective, safe and tolerable way to slow the inflammatory process involved in multiple sclerosis? The Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, the Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Center at Griffin Hospital, and Yale University are teaming up to help address this question as part of a pilot investigational study.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease. Some studies have found that an imbalance of intestinal bacteria can lead to inflammation in the immune system. This study will provide oral capsules with fecal material (“poop”) from healthy donors to people with MS to see whether it leads to changes in their intestinal bacteria, and whether this could slow the inflammatory process involved in MS. The study team, led by neurologist Dr. Joseph Guarnaccia, is recruiting people who are 18 to 40 years old and have been diagnosed with MS. They must be able to visit Griffin Hospital eight times over four months.

Those who complete the study will receive $800. The capsules, procedures and tests are free of charge. The State of Connecticut Department of Public Health is funding this study. Nature Art Playshop for Kids

T

he Nature Art Playshop is a child-led (or individual) activity combining fun, movement, art, creativity and learning all while providing children a chance to play, learn, explore and connect with the natural world around them. It will take place on October 12 at 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Nature art involves creating art from materials found around you in nature, such as sticks, stones, leaves, flowers, pine cones, sand, shells and seed heads. In the group, you will focus on creating mandalas and a fairy village as well as exploring basic methods for creating various types of nature art, such as patterns, shapes, spirals, animals and more. You will cover why we make nature art, how to be an explorer and inventor of the natural world around us, collect materials and more. This is a hands-on play shop. There will be basic instruction and demonstration. The bulk of the time will be spent exploring, playing, collaborating and creating nature art in the woods.

he Adam Wysota Foundation’s Adam’s House offers grief education and peer support in a home-like setting to give families a safe, healing place as they go though their 8-week grief journey. There is still time to enroll in the nonprofit organization’s fall group, which will be held on Wednesdays starting October 2 from 6:30-8 p.m.; there is an optional family dinner at 6 p.m. All families must commit to each of the eight Wednesday evenings, as attendance is imperative. Reduce Kids’ Risk of High Blood Pressure With Maternal Vitamin D Children born with low vitamin D levels have an approximately 60 percent higher risk of elevated systolic blood pressure between ages 6 and 18, reports a study of 775 Boston children published in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension. Those with persistently low levels of vitamin D through early childhood had double the risk of elevated systolic blood pressure between ages 3 and 18.

Higher systolic numbers increase the risk of cardiovascular disease later in life. Because infants’ vitamin D levels are determined by the mothers’ levels during pregnancy, researchers suggest exploring an official recommendation for vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy.

In a Brazilian study published in the Journal of Herbal Medicine, extracts of rosemary leaves and pomegranate peels, along with a South African herb known as misty plume bush, significantly reduced the ability of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria to grow and spread in the laboratory, a finding that may help develop new strategies against the superbug.

Up to 75 percent of women deal at some point with the itchiness, discharge and sexual discomfort and pain of vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida species, the most prevalent being Candida albicans. Egyptian laboratory researchers tested fennel oil and eight other plant-based essential oils on 19 Candida albicans strains that were resistant to the antifungal medication fluconazole. They found that the fennel oil had significant antifungal properties against the strains, outperforming chamomile, jojoba, nigella, fenugreek, cod liver, peppermint, clove and ginger oils. When combined with fluconazole, fennel was effective on seven strains, theoretically lowering the need for higher doses of the medication.

Protect Kids From Bullying to Lower Risk of Teen Depression A three-decade study of 3,325 young people in Bristol, UK, found that kids that were bullied at age 10 had eight times the rate of depression in their teen years, and that it persisted for some into their adult years. Using detailed mood and feelings questionnaires and genetic information, researchers found that childhood bullying was strongly associated with depression. Bullied children had a greater risk of both limited depression occurrence and persistent depressive issues. Other risk factors found to be associated with depression in the children included anxiety and the mother’s postnatal depression.

Take Cordyceps to Enhance Immunity Cordyceps, a fungus that grows on caterpillars high in the Himalayas, has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a rejuvenating and performance-enhancing medicine. The latest Korean research shows it also boosts the immune system. Scientists tested 79 healthy adults for eight weeks, giving 39 of them 1,680 milligrams of cordyceps a day in capsules and the other 40 were given a placebo. The cordyceps produced a 38 percent increase in natural killer (NK) cell activity, which plays a role in immunity by detecting and killing virus-infected cells, tumor cells and abnormal cells.

The endangered Florida panther has been saved from extinction thanks to the introduction of female Texan pumas, reports a 10-year study conducted by the University of Florida and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The pumas, which like the panthers, are a sub-species of cougar, were brought to Florida in 1995 to counter the effects of habitat loss and health issues caused by panther inbreeding, including heart defects, infertility and other genetic problems. The panther population has since rebounded from a low of 20 to 30 cats to between 120 and 230.

Conflicts Heating Up Over Arctic Reserves

Scientists warn that the Arctic is heating up much faster than the world average because of rising greenhouse gas emissions. Over the last five years, the region has been warmer than at any time since record keeping began in 1900, which is opening up untapped reserves of oil, gas, uranium, gold, fish and rare earth minerals. At a May meeting of the Arctic Council, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Russia and China against “aggressive” actions in the region, saying, “This is America’s moment to stand up as an Arctic nation.”

Twenty-four scientists from around the world published a letter entitled, “Stop Military Conflicts From Trashing Environment,” in the journal Nature, urging the United Nations International Law Commission to create protections for the environment in armed conflicts. It reads, “We call on governments to incorporate explicit safeguards for biodiversity, and to use the commission’s recommendations to finally deliver a Fifth Geneva Convention to uphold environmental protection during such confrontations.” The four existing Geneva Conventions and their three additional protocols are globally recognized treaties that establish standards under international humanitarian law for the treatment of wounded military personnel, shipwrecked sailors, prisoners of war and civilians during armed conflicts. Violating the treaties amounts to a war crime.

The Makhonjwa Mountains of South Africa harbor some of the planet’s oldest rocks, including meteorites that have been striking the Earth for eons. Icelanders unveiled a plaque in an official ceremony on August 18 in memory of Okjokull Glacier, or Ok Glacier, the first of its kind officially lost to climate change.

The glacier lost its glacier status in 2014 after melting down to only 0.386 square miles, or 6.6 percent of its original 5.8 square miles, and was reclassified as dead ice.

The plaque is inscribed with A Letter to the Future, which includes the words, “This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it.” A 2018 documentary, Not Ok, details the glacier’s death and highlights the dire effects of climate change.

Many digestive disorders are not just chemical in nature, but have a dysfunction of the nervous system too. So to treat only with chemistry will have limited success. Have you ever had “butterflies in your stomach,” cramps or IBS? Is there a chemical absence creating that symptom?

Are there really any direct and definitive answers for optimal health?

After 23 years in practice, I tend to sigh when approached about the latest cure-all or fix for our broken healthcare system. It’s even more blatant as election time nears as it is a national issue raised by politicians. Healthcare—or “sickcare” as some like to call it—is 18 percent of our GDP and rising. Are there really any direct and definitive answers for optimal health? The short answer is no. We know this to be a 18

frustrating truth.

How often is a symptom discussed and the desired relief from different people is different treatments? There is a simple reason for this: everyone is different. From genetics to lifestyle, a condition has different factors in us all. To stay in the game and at our best, patients must go “against the grain.” Doctors must go in the direction of helping the person and not treating the disease. In health care, doctors should avoid lumping conditions and treatments together; instead they should evaluate the individual for the person they are.

Most of us lack the time and money resources to go for all treatments for each condition.

So how do we do this?

As a proud chiropractor, there is a lot of re-education in helping others see past a common misconception of its viability and usage. If we hear someone say they are going to see their chiropractor, a typical response is asking if they hurt their neck or back. Most would not think of seeing

Chiropractic, nutrition counseling, massage, rest and any other treatments that Natural Awakenings has been bringing to people’s attention over the past many years have been shown to be helpful.

These other treatments have helped people with neck and back pain. Chiropractic is very successful in helping with that pain as we know. But are your kidneys, prostrate and/or spleen functioning at their optimal levels? These are underlying conditions that are developing and could become pathological. It is these pathologies that patients are all trying to avoid; this preventative outlook is really the true definition of health care. Manipulation of a pathology is harder than correcting the developing condition. Regular chiropractic care can reduce the development of such conditions.

If a patient continues to take pain medications to block low back pain, the nerves will not be communicating the proper needs of the related organs. Before insurance limited the scope of practice, the adjustment by chiropractors was for overall wellness. Did you know that the first adjustment in 1895 by Dr. Palmer aided in the return of hearing to a man named Harvey Lillard?

People have just lost sight of chiropractic’s true value. Subluxations are a malposition of a vertebra that decreases nerve transmission by 70 percent. How is your body supposed to heal itself if the communication is down? With a sublux-

ation, your body is calling for help on a line where the cell tower is down. With the communication down comes the opportunity for dysfunction and disease to develop. With the proper communication of the nervous system, homeostasis is achieved. There is more balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and a balance of hormones, enzymes and neurotransmitters. Hence there is weight reduction, a reduction in the damage of your joints and improved sleep quality that many spend time and money in search of.

A doctor’s goal should not be to look at patient “John A” that with some issue or event has transformed him into “John B” and then to use a treatment—chemical, surgical or otherwise—to manipulate them into “John C.” The goal should be to return them to John A. If you are taking a medication, have you asked your doctor about the chemical pathway it is trying to manipulate? Ask how to return it to the original pathway? This isn’t the typical medical way of thinking. But that is what is being addressed here. If we truly want to correct the downward spiral of today’s “sickcare” system, then doctors must help people return to the state they were in before the pathology set in. We should not be manipulating it going forward.

What are some ways we can return to that “original” state?

To aid in the proper treatments for the individual patient and return them to homeostasis, many are seeking an applied kinesiology (AK) evaluation. With AK, it’s the patient’s nervous system that aids the doctor on the correct adjustment to perform,—such as the correct nutrition, acupuncture point and even the correct shoes—to decrease the developing pathology. AK is a neurological analysis with immediate changes to the person’s state of dysfunction. For example, many therapists only address a muscle that is too tight. What if a supporting muscle let go for numerous reasons? During stress, blood sugar changes can alter the function of the lower trapezius muscle group, resulting in the upper traps overworking. The typical request is “rub my neck and shoulders.” The answer should be to treat the blood sugar issue.

Or maybe there is a patient with right hand carpal tunnel and a history of left ankle sprains. The correction will never hold if that ankle issue isn’t addressed in correlation to the hand. With AK, both the patient and doctor now know that time and money are being well spent on health care.

The human spinal column sports 31 pairs of nerves, some corresponding directly to digestive, reproductive and respiratory organs, which might explain why regular spinal adjustments and other chiropractic techniques can be helpful for seemingly unrelated conditions like asthma, chronic headaches, hormonal imbalances and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

A scientific review of 179 published papers focusing on various non-musculoskeletal conditions shows benefits of fullbody chiropractic treatment for asthma, infantile colic and cervical vertigo. Results are also promising for middle ear infections in children and pneumonia in seniors.

Clinical evidence suggests the nervous system is a cohesive factor in achieving overall wellness. “In chiropractic and

holistic philosophy, the body is considered a self-healing organism,” explains chiropractic physician and applied kinesiologist Marc Terebelo, of the Chiropractic Wellness Center, in Southfield, Michigan.

“The nervous system controls the body, so issues in the toes or fingers may be caused by spinal issues in the neck and low back.

Likewise, bladder and menstrual cycle problems can be caused by injury to the low back or pelvic regions.”

William J. Lauretti, a New York Chiropractic College professor in Seneca Falls, concurs with the benefits of holistic treatment. “Chiropractors view the body as an integrated unit, and problems in one area might affect a seemingly unrelated area,” he says. “Most chiropractors have a wide variety of treatment approaches to offer, including advice on nutrition, lifestyle, stress management and exercise.”

Chiropractic and Digestion

In his practice, Lauretti has observed better digestion as a positive side effect to regular adjustments. “I’ve had a few patients over the years who reported improvement in digestive problems after chiropractic treatment of the mid- and low back. In some of those cases, the improvement was serendipitous, because the patient didn’t discuss their digestive symptoms initially, only after they noticed the improvement.”

Hope for Headaches and TMJ Dysfunction

Chronic tension headaches and migraines can become the norm for too many individuals, but chiropractic care—including spinal adjustments, nutrition advice and addressing emotional causes such as stress and anxiety—can be key in reducing pain and getting to the root of the problem.

“Technically, only headaches with a list of very particular characteristics can be properly diagnosed as migraines,” Lauretti explains. “The cause of many cases of chronic, long-term headaches is often from poor function of the muscles and joints in the neck.”

These types of headaches often respond well to treatment focused on restoring normal function to the neck, he says.

TMJ disorders can cause painful and sometimes debilitating symptoms, including facial and tooth pain and locking of the jaw.

Chiropractic treatments often provide reliable relief. “The TMJ is a very important joint in the body, with thousands of neuroreceptors. TMJ involvements can cause headaches, particularly around the ear or side of the head, vertigo, tinnitus and other hearing issues,” says Terebelo.

Cailteux notes that aside from experiencing jaw pain and headaches, someone suffering from TMJ disorder may have difficulty chewing, and may experience an audible clicking of the jaw with movement. “Chiropractic adjustments can be particularly helpful, especially when delivered to the TM joint and the neck.

Gentle, soft-tissue manipulation of the muscles and tendons of the jaw, specifically the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid muscles, is also a highly effective treatment.”

For a true holistic approach and lasting success, Lauretti offers this advice: “Look for a doctor who is willing to work as part of your healthcare team and who’s willing to refer you for specialty care when appropriate.”

How Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Fields Are Transforming Healing From NASA to Next Door

T

he Earth’s magnetic field plays a critical role in health and wellness.

Each of our body’s cells acts like a battery; they can “lose charge” over time, causing fatigue and inflammation.

Many of people are not aware of this.

In the 1960s, scientists at NASA were aware. They worried that when astronauts were outside the Earth’s magnetic field— which creates a “pulse” within our atmosphere called “Schumann resonance”— it could cause bone loss (osteoporosis), fatigue and depression. NASA began using Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Fields (PEMF) during the Gemini missions, and continued right through to the Space Shuttle era.

However, the scientists weren’t satisfied that after-mission physicals showed that the astronauts were remarkably maintain22

ing their bone density. They wanted to learn more.

In 2009, after over $3.5 million dollars in research, NASA was awarded a patent for PEMF use to enhance tissue repair in mammals, and to reverse the bone loss experienced by astronauts when they are away from the Earth’s magnetic field.

Today, PEMF is used for more than protecting astronauts in outer space and for more than osteoporosis. The patent mentions “tissue repair,” which means that PEMF does not only prevent damage in the short term, but actually stimulates healing for any number of different and unrelated conditions. These can range from rheumatism to diabetes to chronic pain to fibromyalgia and even bone fractures.

How does PEMF work?

The simple answer is that our bodies run on electricity. All organs depends on electrical energy from the brain and spinal cord; furthermore, all cells generate and use large electrical currents. For example, “gap junctions” allow heart cells in each chamber to contract nearly simultaneously and behave as one. To achieve this, the cell is designed like a battery. The fatty membrane surrounding each cell “collects” ionic charge on each side, like a capacitor, creating a charge difference across the membrane that it is ready in a millisecond’s notice to generate electricity.

What does this look like during injury or sickness? Injured or inflamed tissue is known to store lower charges. When capacitance to hold a charge declines,

exchange of nutrients and waste metabolism declines with it. Cells work to restore charge during the healing of a broken bone, a process that NASA found accelerated by PEMF. However, in a chronically inflamed cell, charge may never be restored. This low charge contributes to many of the symptoms we recognize in someone chronically unwell, such as poor stamina, poor sleep, mood disturbances and physical pain. When many cells have low charge, the person will not function optimally.

Like the Earth’s atmosphere, this PEMF electromagnetic energy is harmless; it poses no risk of shocking the patient or increased temperature. Pulsed electromagnetic fields are ultrashort but powerful bursts of voltage electric energy that stimulate individual cells. During PEMF therapy, the body’s tiny batteries recharge through a kind of “cellular exercise.” The battery function of the cell works to clean up on a microscopic level to expel toxins and recoup nutrients. This enhancement of metabolism helps to relieve pain and inflammation; vastly improves microcirculation; and improves bone fractures, wound healing and pain from neuropathy.

It cannot, however, be used on patients who are implanted with a battery-powered devices, such as a pacemaker.

Rebooting metabolism with PEMF

PEMF use is not meant to diagnose, treat or cure a single disease. As a therapy, it enhances and optimizes natural tissue healing. In 1979, the FDA approved PEMF specifically for the healing of nonunion

fractures after a NASA-funded study at Columbia found significant benefit of this safe, non-invasive treatment. “Nonunion” fractures are those that fail to heal from infection, excessive movement or poor blood supply, making PEMF ideal from athletes to the elderly. Since then, the FDA has cleared magnetic therapy for fusing broken bones, treating resistant depression, and post-operative pain and swelling.

While professional sports teams have been early adopters, application for chronic disease benefits are slow to be incorporated in our pharmacologic model of medicine.

A broad application

Proving its widespread benefit for metabolism, PEMF heals depression and diabetic neuropathy in the same way that it heals broken bones. In addition to enhancing microcirculation, it stimulates nerve cells as it does other cells, including the liver and tract of the intestine. This nerve cell stimulation is believed to relieve depression. It also has been proven effective in relieving pain from rheumatoid arthritis and diabetic neuropathy; it even regenerated nerve tissues in research animals.

The link here is that diabetic neuropathy is caused by nerve fiber degeneration (or decay). So these diseases, though very different, can both benefit from the painless, harmless stimulation offered by PEMF. PEMFs benefits are particularly useful in the management of fibromyalgia.

How to apply PEMF therapy

Knowledgeable practitioners designate a PEMF plan with programs based on “cellular exercise” needs. Medical grade devices allow for fine tailoring of PEMF parameters based on the condition, with personalization of session duration, total hours, pulses frequency and, importantly, magnetic field strength. The treatment for acute injuries will differ from that of chronic ailments. For example, athletes will require more pulses per second than would be appropriate for the elderly. Further, magnetic field strength, a key feature, is best individually personalized.

Luckily, PEMF is no longer exclusively for NASA. Treatments are increasingly available from trained providers across the United States to assist with innovative healing by energizing people at the cellular level.

athy Whelehan, her son, and her daughter all suffered with symptoms of Lyme disease for years.

They sought help from conventional medical providers and medication, and worked with a naturopath to supplement with dietary changes and herbs. They did yoga and meditation, For Cathy’s daughter, the Lyme disease attacked her brain— so badly that often she couldn’t get out of bed, and sometimes couldn’t remember her own name. More modern takes on this methodology, however, are based on the “new-fangled” research of Nikola Tesla, Royal Rife, and Georges Lakhovsky, early 20th-century scientists who experimented with frequencies to observe how they affected the human body. In today’s hightech world, many healers have rediscovered their findings, incorporating them into devices that bring a tech-centric approach to sound and vibrational healing.

“Rife showed a long time ago that you can vibrate frequencies that will destroy a bacteria or virus,” says Dr. Adam Breiner,

We’ve had instances of people with arthritis immediately being able to move their hands more easily, as they stand in front of the BioCharger.”

Breiner says frequency healing technologies have a profound effect across the body, and the more a person uses them, the more “charged up” their cells will be, as the treatments have a cumulative effect.

“Obviously, our cells recharge on their own and you don’t need [these technologies] for that, but at the same time, the sicker you are, the more toxins you have in your environment, the more you burn the candle at both ends, the weaker your cells become,” he says. “Cells that have a lower electric potential tend to be unhealthy cells, and that’s when we see symptoms of disease in our bodies.”

The AmpCoil, the wellness tool which yielded such powerful results for the Whelehans, utilizes sound transmission technology to listen to the messages from your body through voice stress analysis.

Its BetterGuide App then uses extensive mathematical algorithms to play back your chosen frequency tunes through a PEMF process and a modified Tesla coil.

The manufacturers stress that the technology is meant to help uncover and address the causative influences that detract from overall well-being.

“Each time you come into it, and the more entrained you get, the more in balance your whole bioterrain becomes,” says Whelehan. “It can take several months, depending on how sick you’ve been, but I’ve seen miracles happen all the time.”

The device looks like a giant donut, and its frequencies reach a four-foot radius, so it is most often placed on the lower belly during a session, although it can be placed on specific body parts depending on the issue being addressed. The process is best known for easing symptoms of chronic illness, including Lyme disease and psoriasis, but the PEMF process has been approved by the FDA to help with fractured bones, depression and anxiety.

“I had a college student come in this summer with Bartonella Lyme, the full gamut, even intermittent blindness,” says Whelehan. “She had about five symptoms, and in 10 sessions, she was down to zero.

It’s rare, but she was down to no symptoms. For some people it can be quick. For people who have been sick a long time, it takes a bit longer.”

Also based on PEMF, BEMER (Bio-Electric Magnetic Energy Regulation) therapy targets the body’s circulatory system. The device is a mat that can be used to treat the whole body or wrapped around specific body parts for spot treatments. BEMER uses patented frequency protocols to optimize the body’s blood flow by boosting the microcirculation of capillaries, the smallest blood vessels in the body. The technology is used in more than 4,000 medical clinics, hospitals, and universities in Europe, and has become more common in the United States over the past few years.

FSM

Frequency-specific microcurrent (FSM) was developed by Dr. Carolyn McMakin in 1995, based on frequencies developed by an osteopath in Canada who was using a machine built in the 1920s. The frequencies used in FSM are electromagnetic pulses run on two channels at the same time. The frequency addressing the condition is put on channel A, and the frequency addressing the particular body tissue runs on channel B. There are frequencies that address more than 200 conditions including inflammation, scar tissue, mineral deposits, toxicity, congestion, trauma, and many more.

“It sounds a little out there,” says Lisa Singley, ND, a naturopathic physician at Natural Health and Wellness in Stratford, who uses FSM to enhance other modalities she offers. “When I first tried it, I had a shoulder injury, and my shoulder was like concrete; it was hard as a rock. And 45 minutes later, not only were my shoulder muscles completely relaxed—like I had had a massage—but my whole body was relaxed. I remember thinking, I haven’t been this relaxed in five years.”

Singley says that’s the most common reaction from her clients—that they immediately feel calmer and more relaxed.

Like all the devices mentioned here, what a patient actually “feels” during a session varies from individual to individual. Some have no physical sensations, whereas others feel a bit of tingling or heat, which indicates the frequencies have identified an area of blockage.

“Some people feel more than others,

but the feeling is very subtle,” says Singley.

Frequency healing technologies often work best in concert with other therapies.

Scalzi says she uses the BEMER mat in combination with all her other services, including body contouring, Reiki, and massage, because it often deepens the effects of the other modalities: “I combine just about everything I do with BEMER therapy because the increased circulation helps clients open up and relax, and I can go in and really work their muscles.”

Breiner also notes that, in addition to complementing other therapies, these technologies also work well as a general “tune-up,” to maintain energy and keep bodies in balance: “Anything we’re doing— nutrients, herbs—the body is going to be more accepting of it if the cells have their charge.”

Perhaps most importantly, these practitioners all noted that frequency healing technologies are meant to be one tool in an overall wellness routine—they are not substitutes for smart decisions about diet, activity levels, and self-care.

“You DO have to do other things…you have to be very mindful of what you’re eating, and make sure you’re hydrated,” says Whelehan. “It’s not like you just put the Coil on and everything’s going to be okay. But it helps you start paying more attention to what’s going on in your body, because you become more sensitized.

“At the end of the day, these devices are the medicine of the future because they allow people to take their well-being into their own hands and be empowered.”

Wisdom from the “Wild”

n common conversation, the word “wild” is often used to describe something that is out of control, uncivilized, or lacking reason, but these interpretations are misleading. Wild also has many positive connotations, including being in tune with nature, fully present, confident, and resilient. All animals, even domesticated ones, retain some “wild” characteristics that provide great wisdom for humans.

Wildly in Tune

Wild animals are in tune with nature.

As the seasons change, they adjust their routines, such as by storing food for the winter, building shelter, or moving to a more hospitable location. Squirrels store nuts, bears find dens for hibernation, and monarch butterflies migrate hundreds or thousands of miles every year. Animals’ bodies also adapt to their seasonal climates. Horses, for example, develop thicker coats in winter and shed them in summer to remain comfortable in changing temperatures. Animals also know how 28

to respond to severe weather. During the recent hurricane, the wild horses in North Carolina did just fine; they know how to band together as a herd and stand with their backs to the wind to ride out the storm.

Wild animals are also in tune with their bodies, unlike humans who tend to spend more time in our heads. Wild animals will naturally exercise through stretching, rolling, running and playing; they sleep when they are tired and eat when they are hungry. They know how to keep themselves well. They even choose their food wisely, generally avoiding poisonous berries and plants.

As the seasons change, go a little wild. Note what your body is asking for in each season, including different types of foods and environmental adjustments.

Watch your pets and note the adjustments they are making; watch the wild animals outside your window to get some ideas for how to nurture yourself and remain balanced in each season.

Wild animals possess a natural self-confidence borne out of living on their own without human intervention. As the saying goes, “a bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on her own wings.” Wild animals generally do not expend their energy worrying about what could happen unless actually faced with an imminent threat. They are fully present and mindful, and respond to what is, rather than all the things that could be.

Animals, wild and domestic, do what they want in each moment, and are willing to ask for what they need if they aren’t able to get it on their own. Watch your dog or cat a few minutes past their usual mealtime. If you haven’t fed them, they will probably try to direct your attention to the food or food bowl. They are asking for what they need. If you don’t give it to them, they will find another way to satisfy their needs, including jumping on the counter to sample your food. Animals prioritize self-care, in part as a matter of survival. Humans can learn to be wild in this way too, trusting in their own strength, and asking for what they need.

Wild Relationships

Wild animals also can teach humans about working together and having healthier relationships. Wild dolphins work together to drive smaller fish into shallow water so they can catch them more easily, and wolves often hunt in packs to take down large prey. Predators aren’t the only ones who work together; prey animals can be sophisticated collaborators. Horses organize themselves in herds where they utilize each individual horse’s strengths: Some horses take on the role of sentinel and watch out for predators, some raise the foals, some lead the herd to water. Each member of the herd has an important job.

Roles and relationships change over time and animals don’t seem bothered by these changes. Humans fret over empty nests, but birds don’t. When fledglings are too big for the nest and ready to fly, the parents encourage them and then take off themselves. Many other animals follow the same pattern; they nurse and train the

running and playing; they sleep when they are tired and eat when they are hungry. youngsters, who then head out on their own. Humans going through relationship changes could lower their stress levels by accepting the change as natural rather than expending energy resisting it.

Wild Trust

When a wild horse decides a situation is uncomfortable or unsafe, the horse moves to a safer situation, whether that is back to the herd or away from the perceived threat. Humans often override these same impulses, because they don’t want to offend someone or because they talk themselves out of being “irrationally” afraid, often to their detriment. All creatures have intuitive or instinctive senses. Animals live by these senses, but humans are often conditioned to ignore them because they are not “logical” or explainable. Humans who learn to trust their instincts, and live with their wild senses wide open, can discover a whole new world of wonder.

hen Yale researcher Reid Lifset began working on waste issues on a life cycle basis—from “cradle to grave”—it was mostly the world’s geeks and nerds that paid attention, he says.

“Today, it’s called the ‘circular economy’ and it’s sexy. It wasn’t sexy back then.”

While many still have never even heard the term, the “circular economy” is all about rethinking the way we make stuff—designing products that can be reused and powering it all with renewable energy. It’s an alternative to the “make-useand-dispose” mentality of the traditional linear economy.

“You are the circular economy when you buy pre-owned, second-hand objects, or rent or share the use of objects, or have broken objects repaired instead of buying new ones,” says Walter Stahel, author of The Circular Economy: A User’s Guide and a member of the European Union’s Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform. In other words, everyone that buys sustainable goods or services, takes public transport or gets a lawnmower fixed instead of buying a new one is a participant.

There’s a global movement afoot to expand the circular economy in an effort to significantly cut the waste stream, reduce our carbon footprint and conserve resources.

It began with the three R’s—reduce, recycle and reuse, says Lifset, a Research Scholar at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies who edits the Journal of Industrial Ecology, which focuses on the environmental consequences of production and consumption.

The emphasis has always been on recycling, but as that becomes more difficult due to saturation levels, the emphasis is shifting to the more comprehensive goals of a circular economy—or should be, says Stahel, an engineering professor at the University of Surrey.

Tinia Pina, a program leader at NY Cares, joined the movement after observing the poor food choices her Harlem, New York, students were making and the amount of waste attached to them. She founded Re-Nuble, a small manufacturing operation in New York City, to transform food waste into fertilizer pellets that can be used in hydroponic farming.

“There is a strong need to try to reduce the volume of waste,” Pina says.

“There is also a strong need to produce sustainable—and, ideally, chemical-free— food and make it affordable for all.” She hopes to eventually replicate her process for creating fertilizer in other large cities across the country.

Leasing is another classic example of how the circular economy might work, Lifset says. “If the entity that made [a product] ends up with it when it becomes waste, that company will handle it differently.” The company can instead design a product so that it remains in the economy instead of becoming part of the waste stream, he notes.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation was established in the UK in 2010 to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. It offers numerous case studies, including a San Francisco effort called Cradle to Cradle Carpets for City Buildings.

Last year, the city passed legislation requiring all departments to use carpeting containing no antimicrobials, fluorinated compounds or flame retardants. Both the carpet fibers and backing materials “must contain minimum amounts of recycled materials and ultimately be recyclable at end-of-use.” Most important: It must be Cradle to Cradle Certified Silver or better. The certification is a globally recognized standard for safer, more sustainable products made for the circular economy.

Meantime, the European Union has embraced the circular economy as a boon to job creation and a way to significantly address climate change. By shifting to a circular economy, the European growth rate can be increased by an additional 0.6 percent a year and carbon dioxide emissions reduced by 48 percent by 2030, according to a 2017 report by McKinsey & Company.

Just how much of the world’s industries must participate to meet these goals is yet to be determined.

“That,” Stahel says, “is the billiondollar question.”

hen I feel like I really want to get angry and yell, I sometimes, like, take deep breaths. My brain slows down and I feel more calm and I’m ready to speak to that person.” Those self-aware words come from a 5-year-old Los Angeles girl in the film Just Breathe.

A 9-year-old boy in a tough British neighborhood forgets about “all the scary stuff ” when he does “petal breathing”—opening and closing his fingers in time with his breath. “If I concentrate on my breathing, the worrying thoughts just go ‘pop’ and disappear,” he confided to The Guardian newspaper.

This is the effect that mindfulness training in the classroom often has on students, and it’s key to why it’s happening all over the world—not just in the U.S. and the UK, but in more than 100 countries, including Australia, Taiwan and India.

What started a few decades ago as a small experiment in progressive schools is rapidly gathering speed as emerging research documents the strong positive effects of mindfulness on developing brains.

A 2015 meta-review from researchers at the University of Melbourne, in Australia, which evaluated 15 studies in six countries involving 1,800 students, showed three broad outcomes: higher well-being, better social skills and greater academic achievement. They were more optimistic, self-accepting and happier, more likely to help others, more able to focus on lessons and be creative, and less likely to be angry, anxious or disobedient.

“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally,” is how it’s described by Jon Kabat-Zinn, whose pioneering research at Harvard in the 1980s helped kick off mindfulness as a scientifically based, nonsectarian approach to a calmer, clearer mind. Slow Food Takes Root Global Movement on Fast Track

T

he global Slow Food movement is fast gaining momentum, uniting more than 100,000 people in 150 countries with a shared passion for delicious food and a moral conviction about the people and places that sustain it. It satisfies foodies’ hunger for a deeper appreciation and understanding of their meals’ origins, from farm to fork.

“The key principles of Slow Food are good, clean and fair,” says Laura Luciano, a board member for Slow Food USA and Slow Food Governor for New York State.

“It’s the opposite of fast food, where you are in and out with no idea where your food comes from or the stories behind it.”

Fair, says Luciano, means fair to farmers, and paying a fair wage to workers picking and growing food. “Fair also incorporates principles of equity, inclusion and justice. Good means good for the climate, the Earth and us as individuals. Clean means not using GMOs and pesticides in the food,” she explains.

Slow Food has its roots in Italy, where food and wine journalist Carlo Petrini took up the cause in 1986 to halt the homogenous fast food chains encroaching on the country’s

rich, diverse food culture. Slow Food USA has taken off since its founding in 2000 with 150 chapters boasting 6,000 members nationwide. Many convene annually at Slow Food Nations, a food festival for all in Denver, to swap stories, share strategies, celebrate victories and of course, break bread together.

The backbone of the movement is its local chapters. “Food has a regional identity, connected to history, culture and family,” says Luciano, whose blog Out East Foodie shares the stories of her Long Island edibles.

For Bob Quinn, an organic wheat farmer in Big Sandy, Montana, and the founder of the heirloom grain company Kamut International, the Slow Food movement has been a kind of welcome homecoming and acknowledgment of his company’s efforts to protect workers and nourish consumers.

“To me, Slow Food is a return to the roots of agriculture and the soul of organic, because it focuses on the food—the end purpose of agriculture—rather than profits and yields that are the focus of the industrial food system,” says Quinn, author of Grain by Grain: A Quest to Revive Ancient Wheat, Rural Jobs, and Healthy Food. “Slow

food offers an appreciation for farmers’ efforts to improve the soil and the nutrition, flavor and aroma of the foods we grow.”

The Slow Food movement also connects producers like Quinn with chefs like Steven Satterfield, author of Root to Leaf: A Southern Chef Cooks Through the Seasons and board vice president of Slow Food’s Atlanta chapter. “As a chef, Slow Food to me means honoring your ingredients and going out of your way to get the freshest, most sustainable, seasonal ingredients,” says Satterfield, who came to Slow Food early in his career as a young line cook interested in the provenance of food and protecting its cultural heritage.

At Miller Union, Satterfield’s awardwinning Atlanta restaurant, all dishes are made from scratch, mainly from farms in the region, to support seasonal eating and local growing. Satterfield’s dishes also feature traditional Southern varieties from Slow Food’s Ark of Taste, a catalog of more than 200 culturally significant foods in danger of extinction. One Miller Union favorite is a hummus made from sea island red pea and benne seeds, an ancient variety of sesame originally brought by slaves from Africa to the South Carolina coast and cultivated in hidden gardens as a staple food.

Beyond engaging diners, chefs and producers, Slow Food also campaigns for big-picture policy changes, like farmto-school programs to introduce fresh produce and get kids excited about healthy eating, says Luciano.

“Eating is a political act. The choices we make speak volumes about what we stand for,” says Luciano. “We talk about joy and justice. There is the joy in food and the justice and stories behind it. Slow Food tries to marry both of those worlds.”

Continue to simmer over medium heat until the bok choy is tender, but still has texture and bright color, about 4 minutes.

With a slotted spoon, remove the bok choy and set aside, but leave the citrus peels and spices in the pan.

Continue to simmer until the broth is reduced by half or more.

Taste the sauce for seasoning, then at the last minute, return the cooked bok choy to the glaze and reheat all the way through.

One of the qualities I love about bok choy is how easily the crisp rib absorbs the flavors of whatever it is cooked with. If it is not closely monitored, however, its tender leaves wilt quickly and the rib may turn mushy. I address this issue by quickly pulling the bok choy from the pan when it just begins to turn tender and succulent, allowing the sauce to reduce and intensify on its own. This recipe is perfect with a rice dish or with a delicate fish that could be poached in the cooking liquid for a full meal.

Add the butter, star anise, peppercorns and salt, and bring back to a simmer.

Heat the oven to 400° F. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the mustard, garlic, salt and pepper.

Whisk in the olive oil.

Toss the cauliflower in the mustard mixture to coat.

Paws to Consider Best Friends Waiting for Homes

ade Breunig, of Buckeye, Arizona, had lost his marriage, his job and his house. To combat depression, he went to the local animal shelter to adopt the first cat that “talked” to him. As if on cue, a 2-year-old black cat yowled persistently. During the adoption, Breunig learned that “Bubba” had been scheduled to be euthanized. He was saving a life.

Fourteen years later, Bubba died, and Breunig knew he would miss the mischievous, playful companion that loved car rides more than most dogs. Crying, but surrounded by his second wife and kids, he realized, “I didn’t save Bubba’s life. He saved mine.”

Anyone looking to lower blood pressure, ease anxiety or secure companionship can find it all at their local shelter, where homeless dogs and cats are eager to oblige.

Emily Bach, public relations and event coordinator at Bishop Animal Shelter, in Bradenton, Florida, has many inspiring stories about adopted shelter animals. “They are often the most devoted pets because they know they’ve been rescued,” she says.

The benefits of the human/animal bond are manifold, supported by an army of studies that speak to pets’ ability to reduce stress, improve mood and even reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Research into animal-assisted therapy compiled by the University of California, Los Angeles, details the positive mental, emotional and physical effects of this natural modality.

Shelters share success stories of animals that get a “forever home”. Unfortunately, hundreds of thousands don’t and are euthanized. Best Friends Animal Society, in Kanab, Utah, is working to change this. By partnering with animal welfare organizations and shelters, Best Friends has a goal to “Save Them All” through an initiative to make all of the nation’s shelters “nokill” by 2025—which means 90 percent of shelter animals might be saved. Euthanasia will be reserved for failed rehabilitation or when an animal has no chance of recovery from an illness or injury.

In 1984, when Best Friends was founded, about 17 million animals died in U.S. shelters annually. As of August 2019, that number is down to 733,000, a nationwide save rate of 76.6 percent.

Historically, no detailed data was kept on shelters. “For decades, we have worked in the dark to end shelter killing because we lacked accurate information about the problem we were trying to solve,” says Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends. The organization recently launched the community lifesaving dashboard (BestFriends.org/2025-goal), a database that anyone can access to help save shelter pets. “With a better understanding of where the trouble spots are and the profile of animals being killed in a community, we can better deploy our collective resources for the greatest lifesaving impact.”

Part of the success of the no-kill movement involves increased awareness that kindness toward all species is important. Bach points out that shelter animals are also the lower-cost option for people that want pets; most are vaccinated and neutered before they are adopted out and are often already trained.

The outdated myth that shelter pets are incorrigible, unlovable animals with behavioral issues no longer holds. Family circumstances—a change of job or residence, death, divorce or illness—can land a confused and well-loved dog or cat in a shelter. Others become accidental strays or are unceremoniously dumped by uncaring owners. Bishop, a no-kill shelter, places about 100 pets every month, showcasing them on social media, news outlets and at outreach events.
