healthbriefs HEART DISEASE DETECTED EARLY WITH BREATH TESTING
esearch published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology has found that breath testing can reveal potential heart disease and artery problems quickly and efficiently. Testing 31 patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) together with 34 healthy control subjects, the study found that concentrations of volatile gases such as propanol, ethanol and ammonia were significantly different among the heart disease patients. It also found that the breath can reveal specific details about the heart’s condition. The breath test can be analyzed in fewer than 30 minutes.
Italian Court Links Boy’s Autism to Vaccine
Last September, a Milan Court held in favor of plaintiffs that claimed that three doses of the hexavalent GlaxoSmithKline vaccine Infanrix Hexa that were administered to an infant beginning in 2006 caused autism later when he was a young boy. The vaccine is used for polio, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, whooping cough and haemophilus influenzae type B. After hearing from several medical experts, the court ruled that the child likely suffered autism and brain damage as a result of the vaccine’s content of mercury and aluminum, combined with a genetic mutation in the child rendering greater susceptibility. The ruling ordered damages to be paid by the Italian government’s national vaccine injury compensation program. The court’s decision was also based upon GlaxoSmithKline’s list of possible adverse events resulting from the vaccine, which included five cases of autism during clinical trials. Today in the U.S., most vaccines routinely given to children under 6 years of age are free of thimerosal, a mercury-derived preservative.
WEIGHT GAIN IN MOMS LOWERS TOXINS IN NEWBORNS
any expectant mothers try to know about everything they put into and onto their bodies as multiple studies are finding that infants are exposed to toxins during pregnancy. A new study of 325 expectant mothers has determined that the baby’s exposure to toxins in the womb decreases when the mother’s weight gain during pregnancy approaches the guidelines recommended by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2009. Women that are underweight at the start of pregnancy are advised to gain between 28 and 40 pounds, women of a healthy weight 25 to 35 pounds, overweight women 15 to 25 pounds and obese women 11 to 20 pounds. The researchers found that expectant mothers with a gestational weight that meets or exceeds the IOM guidelines gave birth to infants with reduced toxin levels. In their analysis of the umbilical cord blood of mothers from Spain, the researchers tested for 14 pesticides and 21 other environmental toxins, including seven polychlorobiphenyls (PCB). Other influencers such as age, education and fish consumption may also be relevant.

MEDITATION IMPROVES BRAIN HEALTH
Enter a World of HALOTHERAPY! Discover the Revolutionary Solution to Respiratory & Skin Issues
arvard Medical School researchers working at the Massachusetts General Hospital have determined that meditation can improve brain health. The researchers studied 16 volunteers that took part in an eight-week mindfulness meditation study at the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. The participants conducted mindfulness meditation exercises for an average of 27 minutes a day. Before and after the trial, the subjects were given tests and magnetic resonance imaging of their brains. The researchers found that the practice of mindfulness meditation resulted in increased gray matter density in the hippocampus of the brain, an area associated with increased memory and learning capacity, plus a greater sense of compassion and introspection.

Crestwood Summer Garden Program Encourages Social Responsibility
restwood Elementary School, in downtown Las Vegas, is piloting a Summer Garden Program designed to teach 30 to 50 students in grades three to five about permaculture design, composting, garden science, art, cooking and nutrition from June 9 through June 26. Focusing on the principles of permaculture, students will participate in learning activities that encourage social responsibility and action in their community. The idea for a Summer Garden Program sprouted after witnessing how students were motivated to do well in school when they frequently participated in the outdoor classroom garden. It was decided that a summer camp was a great opportunity to train many students to become young farmers and to teach them about nutrition and cooking healthy. During cooking and nutrition classes, 12

every child will enjoy one meal per day that comes straight from the garden. Because the school is located within a “food desert”, students learn that the community has limited options in order to access healthy and affordable food and also that one way to help solve this problem is to grow their own food. The Crestwood program is also designed to develop a sense of responsible urban living within the community and help students receive rich experience that will increase their motivation to love nature, take care of themselves and community and be highly successful in school. Cost is $380/week. Location: 1300 Pauline Way, Las Vegas. For more information, call 702-768-4351 or visit Facebook.com/ CrestwoodOutdoorClassroomGarden.
Ensure A Long Growing Season For The Crestwood's Outdoor Classroom Garden Gardens can solve every problem in our community including education, food security, health, economic diversity, tech job creation, urban renewal, crime reduction, social infrastructure, community connectedness, sustainability, economic localization and water conservation. The summer STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education program will serve as an example of how schools, communities and farmers can work together to make Las Vegas a leader in urban agriculture and empowered community development. Educators are working with scientists, teachers, and permaculture gardeners to write a three-week curriculum that will be available free of charge to other Nevada schools so that they can use it when designing their own summer programs. Help make the Summer Garden Program a reality and help ensure that the Crestwood Outdoor Classroom Garden’s long-term project has a bright and healthy future. A donation of $385 sponsors a student for the entire program; $120 sponsors a student for a week; $30 sponsors a student for a day and $15 helps buy art supplies required for one day. History Of The Crestwood Classroom Garden
n February 2014, Green Our Planet (GreenOurPlanet.org) worked with the American Heart Association grant to fund the first wave of the Crestwood Outdoor Classroom Garden. The school began with five garden beds and immediately began working with Garden Farms to learn how to care for the garden. During that same time period, two teachers from Crestwood collaborated on the Green Our Planet STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curricula team with 10 other teachers from the district and several farmers. From this collaboration, they began learning about permaculture design, which manifests a philosophy of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient. Crestwood teachers began to teach the STEM curricula in the fall of 2014 and noticed that students were engaged and excited about learning in our garden. However, they also noticed that better infrastructure for teaching and learning was required. At that point, the idea originated organically to begin building and transforming the garden into an outdoor classroom.
Crestwood was awarded a Growth Mindset grant in collaboration with Downtown Achieves and the Greater Good Council for the 2015-2017 school years. A portion of that grant was set aside to help the garden metamorphose into a classroom. With the help of about 100 community members, including parents, teachers, community members, companies and nonprofits, pieces of the classroom were constructed. The group began by incorporating several permaculture design-inspired growing spaces that save water; a sunken
bed and an herb spiral. A harvesting table which also serves as a water collecting station that drips into a rain barrel was built, and using soil dug out for the leaf sunken bed, the group made an adobe (cob) bench. With the help of many students and a local artist, the bench became a caterpillar a few months later. In addition, in order to provide a space for teachers and students to display content, a curved whiteboard was installed.

March to Support GMO Labeling A worldwide grassroots group March Against Monsanto has inspired a broad coalition of individuals and groups worldwide to gather as part of a global effort to raise public awareness and bring increasing political pressure to bear regarding Monsanto’s corporate farming and business practices and to insist upon labeling of foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMO). Sponsored by GMO-Free Las Vegas, marchers in Las Vegas will gather at 10 a.m., May 23 at Beauty Bar. An estimated 428 cities in 38 countries on six continents will be participating in the Global March Against Monsanto for a peaceful, non-violent, informational protest. GMOs have been banned by Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Luxembourg, Madeira, New Zealand, Peru, Russia, France and Switzerland. Syngenta genetically engineer food that poses scientifically established health risks. Marchers’ demands include solidarity against Monsanto predatory business and agricultural practices, rejecting “substantial equivalence” of GMO and traditional crops, independent scientific testing of GMO crops, promoting organic solutions, exposing the cronyism between big business and the government, addressing poverty, the real cause of global hunger, supporting food and seed sovereignty, supporting local farms, bees and biodiversity and labeling of all foods that contain GMOs. Long-time activist and member of the Gateway Greens, Daniel Romano warns, “Monsanto is bankrupting famers and causing soil infertility, mono-cropping, loss of biodiversity and beehive collapse. Their practices pose a very real threat to organic farming and loss of native plants and are creating dependency on a centralized food system. In aggregate, this is a recipe for global famine.” An Open Letter from World Scientists to All Governments Concerning Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) (see i-sis.org.uk/list.php), signed by 828 scientists from 84 countries, details their concern regarding GMOs and a call for immediate five-year suspension of GMO crops in order to conduct “a comprehensive public enquiry of agriculture and food security for all.” Location: 517 Fremont St., #A, Las Vegas. Companies Slowly Embrace Sustainability The 2015 State of Green Business report (Tinyurl. com/2015GreenBusinessReport), which assesses the environmental performances of companies worldwide, along with the trends to watch, is produced by GreenBiz, in partnership with Trucost. Collectively, companies have been nibbling at the edges of challenges such as climate change, food security, ecosystems preservation and resource efficiency. One measure of corporate engagement going forward will be proactive involvement on political issues that could accelerate the transition to a low-carbon and more sustainable economy. It remains to be seen whether companies can afford to sit on the sidelines, letting the political process unfold, or worse, play defense against changes that might roil their status quo. 2015 will be an interesting year on multiple fronts, especially with the launch of the new sustainable development goals at the United Nations (UN) in New York this fall, along with UN climate talks in Paris in December. Both will be tests of corporate engagement and resolve in driving the kinds of change many of their CEOs publicly call for. The reports’ findings of companies’ progress in greenhouse gas and emissions, air pollutants, water use and solid waste production are all leveling off or even declining.
‘Lethal Control’ Trades Off Species Over the next four years, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers will shoot 16,000 double-crested cormorants nesting near the Columbia River, in Oregon, at a cost of $1.5 million a year and eliminate almost 100 sea lions because both feed on endangered salmon and steelhead trout. “If people knew how many animals are killed at taxpayer expense, they’d be horrified,” says Camilla Fox, executive director of Project Coyote, a San Francisco Bay Area nonprofit. Termed “lethal control”, there’s a growing trend to kill one species to protect another, and not all methods used are humane. In 2012, Dennis Orthmeyer, acting director of California’s Wildlife Services, said, “We pride ourselves on our ability to get it done without many people knowing about it.” Climate change, reduced habitat and food supplies, and the introduction of non-native species are the result of human interference. “With society’s growing footprint, lethal control can only increase,” observes Michael Scott, a University of Idaho ecologist. A plan to poison 4,000 ravens will protect greater sage grouse. More mountain lions will be killed to save bighorn sheep. The human rampage goes on, and concerned citizens are advised to urge lawmakers to end lethal control and protect wildlife habitat sustainably. Stores Filled with Toxic Products HealthyStuff, a project of the Michigan-based Ecology Center, in collaboration with the Campaign for Healthier Solutions (CHS), has released a report, A Day Late and a Dollar Short: Discount Retailers are Falling Behind on Safer Chemicals, about toxic chemicals found in dollar store products. It includes test results for 164 dollar store products such as toys, jewelry, school supplies and household items and found that 81 percent contained at least one hazardous chemical above a level that generates concern.” The campaign sent a letter to the CEOs of the four largest dollar store chains, including Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and 99 Cents Only, urging them to stop the sale of these unsafe products, especially to communities of low-income and ethnic families that already live in more polluted areas and food deserts, and adopt policies that will instead protect both customers and their own businesses. Combined, these discount chains have annual sales totaling more than $36 billion and operate more stores nationally than Walmart. The CHS is asking for a comprehensive set of reforms; communities need to let dollar store chains know that they want safer products and join local and national efforts advocating for nontoxic products. Farmers Share Farm Machinery Instead of buying or renting expensive specialized machinery, farmers in Maine can now join a “lending library” of farm tools on short-term loan by using the Shared-Use Farm Equipment Pool, a partnership between the Maine Farmland Trust (MFT) and the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association. There are already equipment co-ops and joint machinery ownerships around the country; now the sharing economy being established in urban areas seems to be catching on in rural America, too. For a $100 annual fee, members can gain access to a seedbed cultivator, twoshank sub-soiler, plastic mulch layer, tine weeder, and strip and ridge tillers. The 1,200-pound mulch layer, for instance, retails for more than $2,000. Each piece is undeniably useful, but pricey, especially given the cost per use. Farmers have a three-day window to use the tools. The pool came about when Mike Gold, an MFT staff member, saw the need to lower costs for both new and seasoned farmers. Currently, most of the tool pool members are newer vegetable farmers, but Gold says there’s appeal for established land stewards, too: “They see the opportunity to use that one piece of equipment that they may only need once a year or once every few years.” Source: ModernFarmer.com
Women Marathoners Better at Maintaining Speed Danish researchers studying almost 2 million marathon results from 131 marathon races over a period of five years have concluded that women are 18.6 percent better than men at maintaining a consistent pace overall, compared to the first and the last parts of the distance. Among the population studied, 68.5 percent were men and 31.5 percent were women. The research further suggests that both men and women “burn out” en route and could improve their marathon results significantly simply by starting slower. Source: Consumer.HealthDay.com
Bee-Toxic Pesticide Approved The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved cyantraniliprole, a new systemic pesticide that is toxic to bees, for agricultural use and has set allowable residue limits on almonds, berries, leafy vegetables and milk. The EPA also approved it as a seed treatment, so it may show up in GMO (genetically modified) seeds in the future. Cyantraniliprole has been proven to cause liver toxicity, and the EPA notes that it also alters the stability of the thyroid as tested on laboratory rats. Although the agency maintains that the pesticide is not a direct thyroid toxicant, any indirect effects on this glandular function are likely to disrupt the endocrine system. As its current endocrine disruptor screening program is still in the process of validating tests, EPA registration of the new active ingredient is questionable. Source: EcoWatch.com
Town Eateries Embrace Sustainability The city of Maplewood, Missouri, outside St. Louis, has teamed up with the Green Dining Alliance to become the area’s first Green Dining District, with at least 25 percent of all of its independently owned businesses certified by the Green Dining Alliance (GDA). The GDA helps businesses with sustainability and green business practices while also helping them save money. So far, eight restaurants in downtown Maplewood are GDA-certified. Green Dining Alliance’s Olivia Engel says, “It’s a win-win that makes sense for businesses and communities.” The city is also encouraging the program by subsidizing Green Dining Alliance membership fees. Enflamed Water Home Flame Retardants Found in River
Scientists with the Washington Toxics Coalition tested household dust and laundry wastewater from 20 homes in the state’s cities of Longview and Vanc o u ve r a n d t o o k samples of incoming and outgoing flow from two wastewater treatment plants that discharge into the Columbia River, the Northwest’s biggest waterway. They detected flame retardants in all the tests. The conclusion of the study, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, is that flame retardants are sloughing off household products such as couches and TVs and collecting on people’s clothing, washing out in the laundry and passing through wastewater treatment plants into local waterways. icole Taylor Sharp, today a symbol of fitness and an altruistic ambassador for healthy living, was once resigned to being overweight. It was in her DNA, she believed, and there was nothing she could do about it. “The struggle began as far back as I can remember,” says Sharp, now director of membership for the Las Vegas Health and Fitness Chamber of Commerce. “I remember not wanting to get onto a teeter-totter when I was in kindergarten with my best friend,” she says, “because she was this tiny little pixie, and I was a thicker kid.” For most of her life, Sharp was the heavy gal pal who used her wit and winning smile to make friends, get dates and avoid being picked dead last for a game of kickball. She began dieting as a teenager, and over the years tried many of the

fad weight-loss programs. “It was always just a roller coaster for me,” says Sharp. About four years ago, with her 40th birthday not far away and having given birth to her third child six weeks earlier, Sharp found herself at her highest nonpregnancy weight. “I was a good 30 pounds heavier than I had ever been before,” she said, speaking matter-of-factly, without a hint of self-consciousness. “I was 283 pounds.” And that, Sharp says, was her breaking point. “I just stopped and realized that I needed to change my lifestyle and not just try to lose that baby weight one more time,” she said. What made it different this time around, she says, was her attitude. “I finally decided there was no such thing as a fat destiny. I wasn’t destined to be fat for the rest of my life just because that’s what all the women in my family tree looked like.”
Sharp’s personal fitness journey had begun—a prodigious lifestyle change that saw her shed more than 120 pounds and keep them off. In the process, Sharp emerged as a symbol of hope for those who, like her, once believed being overweight was unavoidable. The pleasure Sharp found from living a healthy lifestyle quickly grew into a passion. She wanted to share her success and help others along their own fitness journeys through education, support and accountability. Through her grassroots health and fitness community, Fit Chix, Sharp has inspired dozens of her friends and neighbors and hundreds online through social media to live a healthier lifestyle. In her position with the Chamber, Sharp sees the potential for that message to reach tens of thousands. “The goal is to create a healthier community through connecting health, fitness and wellness businesses together to better serve the Las Vegas community,” says Sharp, who took over as director of membership in February. The Chamber, now more than 100 members strong, was founded in 2013 by Raymond Wilson and a group of individuals passionate about building a strong and healthy community, Sharp notes. The organization already has reached more than 50,000 through its marketing and social media efforts, and hundreds attend monthly mixers, health fairs and educational forums. Sharp also co-hosts Spotlight on Las Vegas Business, a weekly radio show highlighting small-to medium-size business in the area on KSHP-AM 1400. The two-hour program, airing from noon to 2 p.m. Mondays, also features a 15-minute weekly feature on Chamber members during its health and fitness segment. “In the Chamber, we have dozens and dozens of health, wellness and fitness businesses and experts,” she says. “Whatever it is you need, the Las Vegas Health and Fitness Chamber of Commerce can be an incredible resource to give you those last missing puzzle pieces to realize that healthy lifestyle.” For Sharp, the key was finding ways to live a healthier lifestyle without taking away from other areas of her life that made her happy. “I didn’t know what
A NOTE FROM NICOLE: This picture of me sitting on the bench is February of 2012. My daughter, Lucia, was a year old and I was at about 275 pounds…only down slightly from my six weeks postpartum high of 283. I didn’t even know the photo was being taken. I would have never allowed it because I was so body conscience at that weight. I would only take pictures standing up and partially hiding behind people or the baby stroller. The look on my face exemplifies the feeling I had about the shell I was trapped under; exhausted, discontent and no connection to the feminine energy from which I now draw power. I felt like a mother, a human being…not a strong, sexy, unstoppable WOMAN. That time was a bottom for me yet I am so grateful. The epiphany of knowing what I truly wanted happened right after that time. Nearing 40, I wanted to not waste any more youth and life I had left fighting that rollercoaster of resenting my body and the enemy that was overweight. I just wanted to be successful in living the life I had at a healthier weight where I could function as I chose. If that meant I would live happily or gratefully at a size 14 but be off the rollercoaster, I would take it! Little did I know that 3 years later I would be a happy, active size 8 hiking, cycling, running, leading a boot camp… Anything that I set my mind to, my body could take me there. My body was no longer the enemy and THAT was the gift. The 122 pounds gone was just icing.
level of fitness I would be able to achieve when I started my fitness journey,” she says. “I just knew that I could find a healthier lifestyle.” As the former owner and operator of a successful catering business in the Las Vegas area, giving up good food was a nonstarter. “I needed to basically find a better way to fuel my body,” she says. “I enjoyed the fuel I was putting into it. As a former caterer, delicious food was important to me, and it still is. I just want
my body to feel and look as delicious as my food tastes.” That meant no more “crazy, restrictive diet plans,” she explains, but a dietary transformation to clean eating—making a habit of consuming the healthiest options in each food group. Then there was exercise. The idea of walking 45 minutes on a treadmill didn’t appeal to Sharp, “but I love to go hiking for two hours with friends. (continued on page 21)

Enhancing Sexual Relationships During Weekend Intensives Anti-Aging & Health Benefits of Sex
r. Shelley Hiestand, aka Dr. Shelley, is a sexologist, author, seminar presenter and consultant, promoting the anti-aging and health benefits of sex, seminars, books, educational events related to sex and consciousness, health and well-being. Her mission is “to make the world more sexually joyful.” Born in New Zealand, she holds a law degree and a Ph.D. in philosophy, with the focus on human sexuality. Dr. Shelley states, “Probably the most unique aspect of what I do is that I focus on enhancing what people already have, not looking at the issues and problems, but rather on how to make relationships even better. My sessions are not at all typical in any way. They do not take place in a doctor’s office type of scenario, but rather utilize all that Vegas has to offer. I meet up with my clients at a nice café, restaurant or 20

bar. My sessions can incorporate cocktails, a hike in the Red Rocks, a trip out to Lake Mead or a day trip to a local spa, shopping for sexy outfits, adventures to local clubs, dancing or small group weekend workshops where couples and individuals get the opportunity to meet others, share life experiences and expand upon what they already know and do.” Her background is wide and varied, having traveled all over the world, taught workshops for more than 20 years focused on personal growth, health and sexuality and worked with individuals and couples for more than 15 years. “I have been in a long-term relationship myself for over 20 years that gives me plenty of experience to share, and have also presented at international conferences and appeared in educational movies on the topics of sex and sexuality,” notes Dr. Shelley. “I love
my life and my positivity about life; love and living is contagious. Rather than focus on what is wrong, my philosophy is to give thanks and look at ways to make our lives and loves even better.” She states, “Typically the people who seek me out are couples who have been together 20 to 30 years who wish to stay together, enhance what they have, expand upon what they have already established and make it juicier, more fun and sexually satisfying. The other target group is successful individuals who are still searching for a partner/companion to share their life with and wish to talk with someone who can help them fine-tune their own body image, sexual experiences and skill set and be the best lovers they can possibly be, so when they meet their future partner, they are prepared for a long-term, satisfying, sexual relationship that will last.” Dr. Shelley advises, “Sometimes all that is needed is someone to touch base with on a regular basis to talk about what is happening in their relationships and lives who has a diverse life experience and can make some suggestions for how to change things up a bit and make their relationships more fun and juicy.” Dr. Shelley also tailors packages to suit the needs of individuals and couples that incorporate meeting up and talking about the meaning of life and love, and longer, more extended sessions exploring their fantasies and desires. She also teaches weekend workshops that bring small groups together. “In my experience, when three or more meet, the group energy exponentially enhances the learning, and sharing in these small groups can be profound and inspirational. The focus of the weekend workshops is looking at physical aspects of body image, health, libido, exploring sensuality, loving touch, sexual fantasies, expanding sexual skill sets and becoming more aware of the energetics of loving touch and deeper connections. Dr. Shelley will hold a weekend intensive focusing on Sex, Love and Intimacy, May 16 and 17, at a cost of $500. Receive a free consultation with “Dr. Shelley” when signing up for her workshop. Salt Room LV A Unique, Revitalizing Experience
Soul Sanctuary looks to the world’s religions for inspiration and guidance. “We know that we are on the journey to integrate our spirituality with our humanity and our everyday lives,” says Keating. “The community acknowledges the true validity of each person's inner wisdom, recognizing and honoring the human experience.” According to Keating, the community comes together to embrace diversity of spiritual experience, give love and acceptance to each other, honor the struggles and challenges, create laughter and friendships and pray with each other in supportive ways. “We never tell you how your spiritual life needs to look,” explains Keating. “Instead, we draw out your own inner guidance to answer your life’s questions. We offer a variety of ways to connect to the Divine to help you explore what works for you.” Keating has been on the spiritual path since she first experienced Oneness with the Divine as a teenager. “I have lived in spiritual angst feeling lost and confused in my own dark night of the soul,” she explains. “I know what it is like to feel alone and disconnected from the Divine. alt Room LV is the first dedicated salt therapy center in Las Vegas, with 10 percent drug-free therapy for all respiratory needs, including HaloTherapy for adults and kids, HaloMassages, facials and body treatments, HaloYoga and HaloMeditation, as well as art and yoga classes for kids. Halo in this case has nothing to do with the angels; it’s the scientific prefix for salt. Salt Room LV offers a unique experience for revitalizing the mind, body and soul. Drug-free HaloTherapy recreates the microclimate of a salt cave and helps treating respiratory conditions such as cold, flu, allergies, asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, sinus infections, sinusitis, rhinitis, hay fever and emphysema. In addition, the antibacterial and antiinflammatory properties of salt therapy effectively treat skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. This salt therapy can also dramatically enhance sports and singing performances and improve lung function by increasing lung
capacity and stamina. It has no side effects and helps build the immune system. Owner Ava Mucikyan opened Salt Room LV in 2014, and says, “My vision was to help people with not only their respiratory and skin disorders, but to create a safe space for people who are also dealing with the stresses of everyday life.” The salt cave is truly healing and there is a great power in those 45 minutes spent in a Zen room full of negative ions. “For those moms like me who do not like leaving their child behind when they finally have a spare time to spend with them, yet like a little special attention, we created a space where you can bring your children and still get some pampering for yourself.” Mucikyan relates, “Our customers each have their favorites. We do jewelry making and salt scrub making workshops for kids and adults, as well as other meditation workshops, such as crystal bowl and Tibetan bowl meditations on the last Wednesday of every month. Salt rooms and the salt cave are also available for rent for private events.” “I love meeting our clients, talking to them about their concerns and seeing the smiles on their faces after they come out of a treatment,” says Mucikyan. “The diversity of Las Vegas is my favorite part. I see all kinds of people on a daily basis, with various cultural backgrounds and different interests in life. Twice in two months we have had customers meet old friends that they had not seen in more than 20 years. Salt Room LV definitely became a hangout place for many.” Mucikyan notes that Nevada has improved its business climate during the last few years, and says, “I am very pleased to see more and more businesses open and thrive. It is also rewarding to see that consumers appreciate local businesses and try to spend their leisure with locals, rather than national franchises.” Salt Room LV is located at 1958 Village Center Cir., Ste. 7, Las Vegas. MOVING BEYOND SURVIVAL Our True Identity Surpasses Any Disease by Eric Nelson
et down off your cross.” Harsh words, especially coming from a longtime hospital chaplain when the woman she was addressing had just learned she was cancer-free. Regardless, “Within two minutes, she started retelling the story of her diagnosis, surgery and chemo,” recounted Debra Jarvis, affectionately known as “The Irreverent Reverend”, during a TEDMED talk in Washington, D.C. “She was using words like suffering, agony, struggle... and ended with, ‘I felt crucified.’” It was then that Jarvis asked this woman to do what would likely require more of her than anything she’d done before. Over the years, Jarvis has observed the tendency for us to identify ourselves by our wounds as “survivors” of something that does not and should not define us. “What if people decided to claim their trauma as an experience, instead of taking it on as an identity?” she queries. “Maybe it would be the start of defining ourselves by who we have become and who we are becoming.” As Jarvis well knows, there are, in her words, “powerful forces” pushing us to do just the opposite. In 2005, she found herself in the same position as her friend, having recovered from cancer and trying to sort out what it all meant. “We don’t all have to start a foundation or write a book,” to claim meaning for
ourselves, she says. “Maybe we make one small decision that can bring about a big change.” For some, this has meant exchanging a disease-prone view of themselves for a more inspired outlook. Too often, though, mustering the humility to adopt such a perspective can seem just as difficult as climbing down from whatever tortuous experience we’re clinging to. Yet, it’s essential. As those familiar with the Bible know, a central event of Jesus’ life, his crucifixion, was followed by his even more compelling resurrection, a term that thought leader Mary Baker Eddy describes as “spiritualization of thought; a new and higher idea of immortality, or spiritual existence; material belief yielding to spiritual understanding.” The good news is that such transformation is not exclusive, but available to anyone. Whether it’s at the urging of a chaplain or another counselor or our own divine inspiration that’s encouraging us to move on, we owe it to ourselves to begin discovering who and what we really are. nnerlight Energy Balancing Therapist, Christina Faye states, “I started off just doing Innerlight Method energetic balancing on friends and families. I soon saw its value with struggling students in my classroom and in my teen group and many young adults I know.” The Innerlight Method is a healing protocol shown to successfully restore balance for intuitive, empathic and highly sensitive children and adults, resulting in greater mental clarity and emotional balance for improved health and daily functioning. It’s energy therapy for kids. It’s intuitive coaching for parents. The Innerlight Method energetic balancing directs subtle energy systems to facilitate the body’s ability to heal itself. Dr. Niki Elliott, Ph.D., pioneer and visionary in the fields of energetic healing, education and intuition development, has a goal is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can develop their intuitive gifts while receiving the healing support they need to function optimally at school and in life. Through an integrated approach of energetic bodywork, educational coaching and intuitive gifts training, children experience the freedom to let their inner light shine and express their natural genius. “My own children are sensitive, and were struggling with school and finding balance,” says Faye. “When I met Dr. Niki Elliot, I wanted to learn from her to be able to help
my own children. Soon after I began to help friends and other school children. I have worked with children in a classroom and with special needs for over 20 years. I am one of Dr. Niki Elliott’s certified practitioners. I have been working with clients for three years.” A session is 45 to 50 minutes long. “I offer sessions in packages of three to see maximum reduction in clearing blocks caused by stress or trauma, or identify areas that may need balance or healing to further personal growth, enhance learning and social function or achieve optimal wellness in daily life,” notes Faye. The method based on the scientific model that all matter, including the human body, is an expression of energy. Therefore, all disease and healing starts in this vibrational energy field. This therapeutic energetic healing, directs the subtle energy systems in and around us to facilitate health on many levels.

RETHINKING BREAST HEALTH Natural ways to keep breasts smooth, pain-free and firm, while reducing the risk of cancer. by Lisa Marshall
e’ve been conditioned to narrowly define breast health in terms of pink ribbon campaigns, cancer awareness marches and cold, steel mammography machines. Nearly 30 years after anticancer drug maker Imperial Chemical Industries (now AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals) established the first National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 1985, many women have come to equate healthy breasts with cancer-free breasts, and assume the most important thing they can do is undergo regular screening. But amid this chorus, some women’s health advocates are striving to get a different message across: There are a host of steps women can take to not only fend off disease in the future, but keep their breasts in optimal condition today. “We need to change the conversation about our breasts from how to avoid breast cancer and detect it early to how to have healthy breasts and enjoy them,” says Dr. Christiane Northrup, an obstetrician and gynecologist from Yarmouth, Maine, and author of the new book Goddesses Never Age: The Secret Prescription for Radiance, Vitality, and Well-Being.
Healthy Breasts, Healthy Body
In adolescence, breast changes are the first to signal the arrival of womanhood. When she’s aroused, a woman’s nipples harden and change color. When a woman gives birth, her breasts fill with life-giving milk. “In all these ways, your breasts are deeply connected to your femininity, compassion and sensuality,” says Hawaiian Naturopathic Doctor Laurie Steelsmith, co-author of Natural 26
Greater Las Vegas
Choices for Women’s Health. Because breasts are extremely sensitive to hormonal fluctuations throughout the body, they can also serve as a barometer of overall health. “If you’re having chronic breast symptoms, it can be your body’s wisdom saying, ‘Help. Something’s wrong.’ Women need to listen.” While some premenstrual swelling and tenderness is normal, exaggerated or persistent pain is often a sign of systemic estrogen dominance in relation to progesterone. It’s common in the years leading up to menopause, but can also hint at impaired thyroid function, because low levels of thyroid hormones have been shown to boost estrogen in breast tissue, advises Steelsmith. Large, fluid-filled cysts or fibrous lumps, while non-cancerous, can also be a reflection of overexposure to harmful chemicals and toxin buildup, combined with poor lymph flow, notes Dr. Elizabeth Vaughan, an integrative physician in Greensboro, North Carolina. “If a woman has lumpy, bumpy breasts, they probably contain too many toxins, and those toxins are primarily estrogenic.” Addressing such symptoms is important not only to relieve discomfort, but also because excess estrogen can fuel future cancer risk,
says Vaughan. Any new, suspicious lump should be evaluated by a professional. Also, severe breast tenderness combined with nipple discharge could be a sign of infection or a problem with the pituitary gland, so it should also be checked. But typically, subtle natural healthcare steps can go a long way toward restoring breast wellness. For nipple tenderness, Steelsmith recommends chaste-tree berry (175 milligrams [mg] of powdered extract or 40 drops daily). The herbal supplement mimics naturally occurring progesterone in the body, helping to counter estrogen dominance. Vitamin E (400 to 800 international units [IU] per day) and evening primrose oil (1,500 mg twice a day) have also been shown to alleviate breast tenderness. For fibrous or cyst-filled breasts, Vaughan advises supplementing with iodine (up to 12.5 mg per day via kelp, seaweed or oral tablets) or applying an iodine solution to the breasts at night. A key constituent of thyroid hormones, iodine helps the liver convert unfriendly forms of estrogen into friendlier forms and flush toxins out of lymph nodes in the breast. Also, steer clear of chocolate and coffee, because caffeine is be-
lieved to interact with enzymes in the breast, exaggerating pain and lumpiness. Also consider ditching the bra, says Vaughan. Brassieres can constrict lymph nodes and hinder blood circulation in breasts, locking toxins in and aggravating fibrocystic symptoms. The link between bras and breast cancer risk remains hotly debated, with one 2014 U.S. National Cancer Institute study of 1,400 women concluding unequivocally that, “There’s no evidence that wearing a bra increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer,” while smaller studies from the United States, China, Venezuela, Scotland and Africa suggest a link. Vaughan, the founder of BraFree.org, says the science is compelling enough that she has chosen to keep her own bra use to a minimum and advises her patients to do the same. “Obviously, there are certain sports where you should wear a sports bra and there are certain dresses that only look right with a bra,” says Vaughan. At a minimum, avoid wearing a bra to bed and steer clear of underwires and overly tight bras that leave red marks. “This is not about guilt-tripping women into never wearing a bra. It’s about wearing a bra less.”
Beautiful Breasts Naturally
Too small or too big, lopsided or riddled with stretch marks… it seems almost every woman has a complaint about the
appearance of her breasts. That’s a problem, says Northrup, because, “Healthy breasts are breasts that are loved. We have to stop beating them up.” According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of women getting breast implants for cosmetic reasons ballooned from 212,500 in 2000 to 286,254 in 2014. Physicians—including Northrup—claim that modern implants don’t, in the majority of cases, promote disease like older silicone implants did. Yet even plastic surgeons warn that having implants should be fully thought out, and at some point they’ll probably have to come out. “They are manmade devices, and are not intended to be lifelong. At some point, you will probably have to have further surgery,” says Dr. Anureet Bajaj, an Oklahoma City plastic surgeon. Bajaj notes that implants can rupture, forming scar tissue and lending irregular shape to the breast. Often, as a woman ages and her body changes, the larger breasts she chose in her 20s no longer look right and may cause back and shoulder pain. In some cases, implants can also lead to loss of nipple sensitivity. For these and other reasons, 23,774 women—including actress Melissa Gilbert and model Victoria Beckham—had their implants removed in 2014, often following up with a breast lift (using their own tissue) to restore their shape.
There Is Another Choice For Breast Exams Breast Thermography (DITI) is recommended for ALL women...
• DITI is a non-invasive and non-radiation screening test to monitor breast health • DITI is not limited by breast implants or breast density • DITI can evaluate fibrocystic breast condition • DITI is safe for pregnant women • DITI can continue monitoring mastectomy sites • DITI is valuable in monitoring hormone replacement therapy

Vaughan sees breast implant removal as a wise and courageous choice to restore optimal breast health. Better yet, don’t get implants in the first place. “There are a lot of other things you can do to improve the appearance of your breasts,” she advises. Vaughan recommends breastperking exercises like dumbbell bench presses and flys that tone the pectoral muscles beneath the breasts, making them more resilient and look larger. To prevent or reverse sagging, she again urges women to go bra-free. “We have ligaments in the upper outer quadrant of our breasts called Cooper’s ligaments, and they’re responsible for holding our breasts up. Just like your muscles atrophy when you put your arm in a sling, your Cooper’s ligaments atrophy if you wear a bra all the time.” In one unpublished, yet highly publicized 2013 study, French Exercise Physiologist Jean-Denis Rouillon measured the busts of 330 women ages 18 to 35 over a period of 15 years and found those that regularly wore a bra had droopier breasts with lower nipples than those that didn’t. In another, smaller, Japanese study, researchers found that when women stopped wearing a bra for three months, their breasts perked up. Those worried about stretch marks also have options. They can be a sign of inadequate copper, which promotes collagen integrity and helps skin stretch without injury, says Steelsmith. If rapid weight gain is occurring due to adolescence, pregnancy or for other reasons, try taking copper supplements or applying a topical copper spray on the breasts. Remember to massage your breasts daily, not only as a “search and destroy mission” for early detection of cancerous lumps, says Northrup, but as a way to get waste products flowing out and loving energy flowing in. “It concerns me that women feel pressured to think of their breasts as two potentially pre-malignant lesions sitting on their chests,” Northrup says. “These are organs of nourishment and pleasure for both ourselves and others. We need to remember that, too.” Lisa Marshall is a freelance health writer in Boulder, CO. Connect at LisaAnnMarshall.com. 28

Bust Musts for Cancer Prevention by Lisa Marshall
ccording to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and nearly 40,000 will die annually of the disease. But at least 38 percent of those diagnoses could be prevented via diet and lifestyle changes, affirms the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR). “For decades, the dominant public message about breast cancer has been about early detection,” says Medical Doctor Robert Pendergrast, an associate professor at the Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta, and author of Breast Cancer: Reduce Your Risk with Foods You Love. “Screening is important, but not nearly enough attention is being paid to prevention.” Here’s what we can do to keep cancer at bay or from recurring. Eat more veggies: Cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, are loaded with indole-3-carbinol, or I3C, a potent anticancer compound that helps break down excess estrogen and convert it into a more friendly, or benign form, says Steelsmith. One study in Alternative Medicine Review found that women that ate high amounts of cruciferous vegetables were 30 percent less likely to develop breast cancer over 30 years. I3C can also be taken as a supplement (300 milligrams [mg] per day). Eat more fiber, especially flax: Fiber, via whole grains, fruits and vegetables, helps flush out toxins including unfriendly estrogen. Flax contains cancer-fighting compounds called lignans, which block the effects of excess or unfriendly estrogen on cells. Drink less alcohol: Alcohol boosts estrogen levels in women and is broken down in the liver to acetaldehyde, a known toxin that causes cancer in laboratory animals, notes Naturopath Laurie
Steelsmith. According to the AICR, a woman that has five drinks per week boosts her risk by 5 percent. Two or more drinks per day boosts such risk by more than 40 percent. Skip the barbecue: Charring meat produces carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines. A study of 42,000 women, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found that those that routinely ate well-done hamburger, beef or bacon had four times the risk of those that opted for medium or medium-rare. Keep weight in check: Excessive estrogen, which lives in fat cells, fuels cancer risk. According to the AICR, a woman with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 (obese) has a 13 percent higher risk of cancer than a woman with a BMI of 25 (slightly overweight). Spice up life: Curcumin from the turmeric plant has been shown in many studies to have potent immune-boosting and anticancer properties, reactivating sleeping tumor-suppressor genes that can kill cancer cells. De-stress: Growing evidence that includes studies from Ohio State University suggest that stress can boost the risk of breast cancer and recurrence, plus heighten its aggressiveness by altering hormones and impairing immunity. One study from Finland’s University of Helsinki followed 10,808 Finnish women for 15 years and found as much as double the rate of breast cancer among those that had experienced a divorce or death of a spouse or family member. Drink green tea: It’s loaded with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a potent antioxidant believed to suppress new blood vessel growth in tumors and keep cancerous cells from invading healthy tissue.
Triumph Over The ‘Big C’ by Lisa Marshall
hen Sandy Messonnier was diagnosed with breast cancer, she faced scary treatment decisions as doctors pressured her to consider all means available. “I was more afraid of the treatment than the cancer itself,” says Messonnier, 52, of Plano, Texas. “I kept feeling like I was being lumped into one big category of all women that got breast cancer, rather than treated as an individual.” With the help of her holistic veterinarian husband Shawn Messonnier, Sandy took a more measured approach, blending conventional and complementary medicine in an individualized protocol the couple describes in their book, Breast Choices for the Best Chances: Your Breasts, Your Life, and How You Can Win the Battle! After careful consideration, Sandy opted for two lumpectomies three weeks
apart, instead of a mastectomy, t o r e m ove the small t u m o r. T h e seco n d one was done to clear up a few remaining cells indicated by a biopsy. Meanwhile, she took supplements including green tea and coriolus mushrooms to impede the spread of the cancer cells. Several tests helped determine if she needed chemotherapy and the optimum dose for some of her supplements. The results prompted her to decline chemotherapy and opt for a brief stint of radiation while taking the supplements quercetin and curcumin to help combat the fatigue and other side effects. Afterward, she cleansed her body with homeopathic mistletoe, herbal milk thistle and other detoxifying supplements. Then she began the work of keeping cancer at bay. “A lot of doctors never talk to you about what you are going to do after the poisoning [chemo], the burning and
surgery,” she says. “Rather than taking a cancer-fighting drug, I chose to be more mindful of what I do with my body.” Her regimen called for committing to keeping up with the healthy diet, plus regular walks, yoga and Pilates that she believes helped keep the cancer relatively mild to begin with. But she also made some life changes to address the one thing she believes may have driven the outbreak in the first place—stress. She made peace with her mother, which reduced a lot of stress, began to cultivate a spiritual life and now takes time to meditate or walk when she feels even lightly stressed. She also vowed to keep the fear of recurrence from overwhelming her. “Many women never stop worrying about it,” she observes. “That is toxic energy you are putting back into your body.” As of this October, Messonnier will be five years cancer-free. Her advice for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer: “Chemotherapy, radiation and mastectomy are not among the right choices for all women. There are other options, depending on the type of cancer. Don’t be so fearful that you make hasty decisions you don’t need to make.”

Breast Cancer Prevention Hormone Balance Is The Key by Patricia Beckstead
any health and wellness experts believe the cure for breast cancer is prevention. A growing body of evidence points to the fact that hormonal imbalance caused by normal aging, lack of exercise, undue stress, poor nutrition and chemical toxins, including synthetic prescription hormones (HRT) and xenoestrogens (environmental estrogens), significantly increases the risk for breast cancer. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women aged 45 to 54 in the U.S. Raising awareness about the role of hormone imbalance in breast cancer risk and prevention cannot be overstated. Women of all ages need to become aware of non-prescription, safe and natural hormone supplements available to help balance their hormones and prevent breast cancer and a number of other symptoms or conditions related to hormone imbalance such as premen30

strual syndrome, peri-menopause and menopause. The latest research on estrogen sensitive cancers points to environmental xenoestrogens (carcinogenic estrogens) in processed foods and hormone fed animals that we consume daily, along with chemicals in our work places, homes and basically everywhere, as the leading cause of breast, ovarian, uterine and prostate cancers. Understandably, it is very important to be aware of the dangerous effects these powerful cancer causing estrogens have on the human body, especially breast tissue. Because we are poisoned by these chemicals on a daily basis, we should know or learn how to avoid them and what we can do to keep our bodies safe from their unhealthy effects. Furthermore, these environmental hormones affect both men and women equally, causing a hormone imbalance known
How to achieve balance and determine if and how much progesterone is needed: 1. LISTEN TO THE BODY If progesterone is needed, there will usually be symptoms of estrogen dominance: PMS symptoms (mood swings, irritability, depression, anxiety, cravings, night sweats, weight gain); breast tenderness, fibrocystic breast disease or uterine fibroids; thyroid or sexual dysfunction; fatigue, brain fog, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, memory loss or headaches; hair loss or bone loss; breast, uterine, ovarian or prostate cancer; and/or many more symptoms and related conditions 2. ORDER SALIVA TESTING from any local or online laboratory to monitor the level of hormones or seek the help of a local holistic health care provider that will manage the natural hormone replacement therapy. 3. In most simple everyday cases, the body is very accurate in revealing symptoms that suggest hormone imbalance. However, when cancers are already present or the risk for cancer is great, as with a family history of positive genetic testing for breast cancer (BRCA, etc.), precise levels of hormones should be monitored closely and determined with saliva testing and the assistance of a holistic health care provider.
as estrogen dominance. Hormone replacement therapy is not just beneficial for women. Men enjoy the same symptom reduction and anticancer benefits as women do. According to experts in hormone replacement therapy and cancer research, here is a list of important facts that all men and women should know regarding their hormones. Estrogen dominance (toxic levels or too much estrogen relative to progesterone) causes breast cancer in men and women, but also leads to other estrogensensitive cancers such as prostate, ovarian and uterine cancers. USP progesterone cream, found online or in most health food stores, balances and blocks estrogen and opposes estrogen’s actions thereby alleviating the symptoms and risks associated with estrogen dominance to help prevent estrogen-sensitive cancers or recurrence of these types of cancers. Blood work cannot determine the levels of free hormones, and is therefore ineffective for measuring the sex hormones for hormone replacement therapy purposes. Blood tests measure the plasma for protein-bound hormones only. Free hormones attached to red blood cells are fat-soluble and dissolve in saliva. The free hormones are the hormones available for use by the body and bound hormones are eliminated by the liver. Saliva testing is more accurate than blood studies for testing the sex hormones. Symptoms are usually a very accurate way to evaluate hormone imbalances. Progesterone can be used by the body to make estrogen, and therefore it is important not to have too much progesterone, again creating estrogen dominance. If unsure how to use progesterone, consult with a holistic health care provider that is knowledgeable about natural hormone replacement therapy for symptom relief and to reduce cancer risks. Xenoestrogens (environmental estrogens), chronic stress, poor nutrition, insufficient exercise and insulin resistance are common causes of progesterone deficiency leading to estrogen dominance which can be treated with USP progesterone cream. The most current hormone data
supports what the experts have recommended for years—the use of USP progesterone cream to treat estrogen dominance. Keep in mind that traditional allopathic physicians may disagree on this simply because it is not what they were taught, and primary care doctors or oncologists will most likely object to the use of natural hormones. Therefore, it is in the individual’s best interest to do the research, read as much as they can on the subject and become as educated as possible allowing them to make wise health care choices on their own behalf. USP progesterone cream stops estrogen dominance when used properly. It is important to make sure that balance is achieved between estrogen and progesterone. It’s all about balance. potential. Pilates can help accomplish that in spades. “Simply stated, Pilates is strength training,” says Alycea Ungaro, owner of Real Pilates, in New York City. “We work with resistance to increase strength and hence, muscle mass. Using springs and different apparatus to increase the load to the muscles, we can affect a metabolic increase by building lean muscle mass.” Individuals can add a variety of tools to a basic Pilates mat routine to help tone muscles all over and avoid boredom. “I enjoy adding bands, body rings and light weights to my routine because it provides variety and challenges muscles in a different way,” says Cabán. Resistance bands are easily portable, yet create a considerable amount of challenging resistance to help firm and tone. The body ring, well known among Pilates enthusiasts, is another resistance tool used during mat exercise, often focusing on the lower body and core muscles.
Look Thinner One of the best ways to look and feel thinner is to maintain good posture. Pilates helps create better posture by firming not only the abs, but the back, as well. “All Pilates work is performed with proper alignment and attention to posture. By establishing optimal spinal alignment,
you can facilitate better circulation, improved lymphatic flow and increased stamina of the muscles along the spine,” says Ungaro. Not only will toned spinal muscles help with continued weight loss vis-à-vis increased metabolism, standing up straight will automatically make a person appear thinner, thereby increasing one’s confidence, as well. “You will stand taller, hold your waist tighter and feel stronger,” she adds.
Symmentry In Motion A Boutique Pilates Wellness Studio
Craft Core Muscles Pilates is all about core strength—front and side abdominals and the entire back. Toned abs and a strong back help to prevent injury, improve posture, reduce lower back pain and even promote proper bowel function. But the most popular result is flat abdominals. Once a favorite of 1930s New York City dancers George Balanchine and Martha Graham, Pilates now has 10 million followers in the United States alone. “Pilates teaches people how to use their abdominals correctly— how to contract the abdominal wall, rather than let it distend. This simple mechanism can be used 24/7 in your daily life. That is the single reason that Pilates flattens abs so quickly,” comments Ungaro.
Improve Eating Habits “The increased body awareness will also make you less likely to indulge in unhealthy eating habits,” notes Ungaro. Experiencing the improvements to your body and of what it’s capable is incredibly motivating. “You will have a new respect for your body and be more likely to take better care of it,” she says.
Complete with Cardio No weight loss regimen is complete without cardiovascular work. Combining the strength training of Pilates and a consistent cardio session works to help you lose weight and tone up nearly twice as fast as doing either routine on its own. Walking up hills works, or to add variety and challenge, “Consider swimming, running or the elliptical machine,” suggests Ungaro. “Steady-state activity is great for cardio conditioning.” Victoria Everman, a freelance writer in San Francisco, California, contributes to Gaiam.com, from which this was adapted.

MUSCLES Weightlifting Makes Us Fit,
Healthy and Self-Confident by Debra Melani
omen who shy away from the traditionally male-centric weight rooms might want to reconsider. Standing their ground amid the deadlift bars and iron plates could lead to a host of unimagined benefits. Research has found that among other things, hoisting dumbbells can amp up the fat burn, ward off some common diseases and make women stronger, both inside and out.
Burn Calories When Resting
Aerobic activity can burn more calories while doing it (e.g., 14 to 16 per minute when running), but strength training prolongs the burn, even when resting afterward, according to Wayne Westcott, Ph.D., of Quincy, Massachusetts, who publishes widely on the topic in scientific journals, magazine articles and books. Women will burn fewer calories while pumping iron than when running (between eight and 10 calories a minute), but because of weightlifting’s action—traumatizing muscle tissue and forcing it to rebuild—muscle recovery requires increased expenditure of energy, and thus calories, when the person is at rest. The research shows a revved-up burn of between 5 percent and 7 percent for three full days after a workout, says Westcott, who developed the exercise science major at Quincy College and has reviewed and directed strengthtraining research for more than 25 years. “On average, a woman burns an extra 100 calories a day by having done 30 minutes of strength training twice a week. That’s an extra 3,000 calories a 34
Greater Las Vegas
month, or nearly an extra pound of fat she can burn.” Additional “free” calorie burning comes from the after-burn effect. By initiating the anaerobic, rather than aerobic, system, weightlifting requires more energy just to return to the resting state. “So, after you finish a workout, you will burn approximately 30 percent of the amount of calories you burned during the workout in the first hour afterward as your body transitions back. It’s a bonus of resistance training.” “It’s like there’s a furnace inside you,” says Naturopathic Doctor and CrossFit instructor Holly Lucille, of West Hollywood, California. The more buff a woman becomes, the more fat she burns. “It can help minimize that natural effect of slowed metabolism as you age and control body weight,” she notes. To maximize the burn, eat a healthy combined protein/carb snack within an hour of the workout, advises Jen Hoehl, a personal trainer in New York City, who says, “Adding amino acids helps the muscles rebuild more efficiently.” Westcott agrees, adding that 90 percent of studies he’s reviewed concur that about 25 extra grams of protein such as a Greek yogurt, more for heavier men, just before or after a workout, enhances fat loss, bone strength and lean muscle gain.
Don’t Fear ‘Hulk’ Bulk
Experts agree that it’s impossible for women to look like the Hulk character of comic book fame. “They don’t have enough anabolic hormones, such as
testosterone,” Westcott explains. “Our team has written 26 books on strength training, with not one title exclusively for women. The muscles are exactly the same for both genders, so the same training works, but women will just get toned, not bulky.” “I train a lot of tiny girls that deadlift 225,” Hoehl says. One tip: Don’t overeat, a mistake many women make when starting out. “Often, people will be hungrier, and they lose track of what they eat or think, ‘Now I can reward myself,’” Lucille explains. “You have to figure out what your new normal is. Eat lean, clean protein.” All three experts agree that braving the free-weight area boosts success at toning and trimming the whole body. “If you use free weights, you use your core and more muscle groups to help stabilize both the weight and your body, which is often standing,” Hoehl explains, versus machines that are often worked while sitting, and generally exercise only one targeted muscle group at a time.
Weightlifters also slow Mother Nature’s habit of stealing muscle during aging. “Women lose an average of five pounds of muscle per decade after age 30 until menopause, when the rate increases even more,” Westcott says. Studies have found that during a woman’s first six months of twice-weekly weight training, she can rebuild about one-quarter pound of muscle per week, he says. Because becoming stronger makes everything from chores to other kinds of workouts easier, women become firmer, fitter and more self-confident, Lucille observes. Independence rises, along with self-esteem. “As with all things in life: If you push against resistance, you get stronger,” she says. “That’s true both mentally and physically.” Note: Experts recommend using a certified trainer or weightlifting class to get started. EATING SKINNY Why Vegans and Vegetarians are Naturally Trim by Judith Fertig
e read the labels touting low sugar, carbs, fats and calories. We try this and that diet, hoping the pounds will melt away. Yet more than a third of U.S. adults, nearly 80 million of us, remain overweight or obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta. The problem might be that we’re getting the wrong advice. While most weight-loss plans focus on reducing calories, recent research shows that vegan and vegetarian dietary patterns can result in more weight loss than those that include meat, without even emphasizing caloric restriction. Scientists at the University of South Carolina, in Columbia, point to their study, How Plant-Based Do We Need to Be to Achieve Weight Loss? Study participants were divided into five groups, according to eating style, from vegan to flexitarian to carnivore, and monitored for an eightweek period. At the end of the evaluation, those that followed an entirely plant-based diet achieved the greatest weight loss. Study leader Gabrielle Turner-McGrievy, Ph.D., notes, “Many researchers agree that vegan eating styles are tied to lower BMI [body mass index], lower prevalence of Type 2 diabetes and less weight gain with age.” Can it really be that simple… eat more plants and lose weight? “Yes,” says clean food coach Jeannette Bessinger, of Newport, Rhode Island. “Most people could benefit from eating more vegetables.” Co-author of Natural Solutions
Greater Las Vegas
Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. ~Michael Pollan for Digestive Health with Naturopath Jillian Sarno Teta, Bessinger advises her clients to start by eating more green, leafy vegetables. Vegetables contribute to weight control in several ways, says Bessinger. They fill us up and help calm cravings. Plus, when plants become the bulk of what we eat, we naturally consume fewer high-fat, high-calorie foods. For an easy appetite-control strategy, Bessinger suggests having a cup of vegetable soup about 10 minutes before a meal. “It shuts off your appetite valve and you’ll eat noticeably less,” she says, while still feeling full. She also recommends slowing down and being mindful when we eat. Vegetables help us do that. “It takes two-and-a-half minutes to eat a piece of cheesecake, but much more time to eat a big salad,” she says. For New York City-based Victoria Moran, author of Main Street Vegan and The Good Karma Diet, losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle became easier once she adopted a vegan diet. “I’ve been through life and loss and
ages 40 and 50, and my weight stays steady, some 60 pounds less than it once was,” she says. “Every year when I put away my winter clothes and get out my summer clothes, they fit.” Her eating strategy is easy, too. “Make your plate look like a Christmas tree,” says Moran, “mostly green with splashes of other bright colors from vegetables and fruits.” She eats green veggies in several ways. She makes her own green juices—one favorite combines celery, kale, apple and lemon juice. She also adds tender greens like romaine or spinach to smoothies that might also contain fruit and citrus juice. She steams greens with plenty of garlic and makes big salads. “I bought my salad bowl at a restaurant supply house,” Moran exclaims. Salads get an oomph factor with a selection of avocado, pumpkin or hemp seeds, mushrooms, chickpeas or red beans, artichoke hearts, chunks of steamed yam and sautéed tofu or tempeh. Moran cites benefits of more energy to do more physical activity and “feeling really good” as additional outcomes of her dietary shift. Sophie Uliano, a Los Angelesbased natural beauty expert and author of the new Gorgeous for Good, agrees, believing that eating a vegan diet 80 percent of the time can pay dividends in weight loss, well-being, energy and beauty. “Most of the time, eat clean and healthy,” she recommends. “It’s not a diet. It’s a ‘live-it’, a way of life.” Uliano recently asked two colleagues on the Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family show to try eating vegan, while also eliminating gluten, alcohol, caffeine and refined grains. The pair lost weight, gained energy and improved their skin tone. “Transformation comes in a series of small, consistent decisions over time,” concludes Bessinger, eating salad instead of cheeseburgers and vegetables instead of fries. For natural weight management, “Make strategic, long-term changes in stages that you can actually sustain over time.” Judith Fertig blogs at AlfrescoFood AndLifestyle.blogspot.com from Overland Park, KS.
Health & Wellness Counselors Implementing a Health Program by Sari Dennis
Personal health and wellness counselor, Sari Dennis (left) and cook, Lisa Cheplak are examples of how you can be supported as you integrate positive, healthy changes and create a vibrant, healthy lifestyle.
e know what kind of health we want and we know what we need to do to get what we want, but obstacles have a habit of getting in the way and holding us back from reaching what we desire from our lives. Often, we are held back in life because of fears and our own limitations, so we make excuses that make sense for us and allow our inaction to be okay. It could be time restrictions that get in our way, perhaps past failures prevent us from trying again or maybe we just don’t have the motivation on our own, and we stop trying. Integrating change on our own can be a daunting and lonely task, so seeking support from an outside source can make all the difference in helping us establish an individual health program that is just right. Health programs guided by experienced health coaches are a fairly new phenomena, yet those that have experienced having one in their corner realize the tremendous benefits. With guidance and individual attention, we become empowered to accomplish what we set out to achieve. Unlike physicians, whom often don’t have much time to spend with patients on nutrition and lifestyle and tend to prefer pharmacological solutions, a health coach
partners with their client, guiding them through the confusion and obstacles they face about their health. According to Joshua Rosenthal, founder and director of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, “There is no question that health coaching is the future of health care. Having a health program engages one to take an active role in establishing their own personal plan of prevention and action.” Taking an active role in the decisions that affect our life is critical to prevention, ownership and the understanding that guides our choices. Engaging in a health program means we don’t have to do it alone. This can be of great comfort and support as we begin to make changes. Kerrie Martin, founder of Live In Rhythm, says, “There’s so much conflicting information out there that a health coach can help individuals decipher all the information, allowing clients to figure out how a treatment plan will impact their life.” Making the decision to set up our own personal health program can empower us to make lasting changes that prove beneficial in improving all areas of our lives. Questioning where we are in our lives versus where we really want to be can
serve as a great catalyst for change. So many people spent a lifetime developing habits that are now second nature. These habits may no longer serve us, but we don’t know how to change them or are resistant to do so. Adapting a health program, where changes are made gradually, can open the door to new possibilities, allow us to become what we desire and result in our achieving the life we envision. rom That ‘70s Show to Orange is the New Black, actress Laura Prepon has long been considered by TV audiences to be a welcome image of health. Yet Prepon’s recent discovery that she’d been falling short in nourishing her body as effectively as possible has set in motion a complete redirection of lifestyle, from her diet to fitness routine. Now working on a book about clean living and eating due out next year, Prepon has rededicated herself to educating us just as much as she’s entertained us through the years.
and bring meals to work so I don’t stress about food during the day. It feels good to get people together in the kitchen and I’ve taught friends how to cook healthy foods in simple ways, so they now bring their own meals with them to work. It’s all about preparation, so that you’re not just grabbing something on the run. Knowing what’s going into the food we’re eating is important.
My mother was a gourmet chef and an advocate of organic food, so we always had amazing meals growing up. Eating organic produce that’s in season locally seems to help me assimilate nutrition more readily. Whenever I can, I also try to tap into biodynamic agriculture, which takes an even broader holistic approach to food production and nutrition. I view GMOs [genetically modified foods] as toxic to the system. As a self-taught chef, I like to cook at least 80 percent of my food at home
eryone has to deal with, our gut flora, intestines and bodies in general are becoming compromised. Ten years ago, few had even heard of gluten allergies unless you had celiac disease, which was rare even then. Now, everywhere you go, there’s a gluten-free option. I love eating soup because the healthful ingredients I use are broken down completely, so the body can immediately assimilate needed micronutrients, which help heal us from the inside out. What’s key to your ability to naturally stay healthy and fit in the midst of an intense schedule of work and travel? I love modalities like acupuncture, massage … all of that. I fully believe in keeping energy flowing to benefit the functioning of all our organs. As school kids, we learn about the circulatory system and central nervous system, but who knows much about the lymphatic system? It’s extremely important, and people are starting to get the idea. Activities like yoga, swimming and bouncing on the trampoline can help.
Do you see society’s penchant for medicating as a way to avoid listening to and addressing our body’s real needs? I do. That’s why I study Eastern medicine, because I feel that Western medicine treats problems and Eastern medicine prevents problems from happening. I grew up in a family of doctors and “full-on” Western medicine and respect the medical community. Unfortunately, these days, most people are continually medicated and they’re not getting better. As a society, we tend to just take a drug to handle a symptom instead of addressing the actual cause of the problem.
n celebration of Food Revolution Day, five chefs from the Las Vegas Valley will come together under one roof to tantalize palates and help educate children on good nutrition from 6:15 p.m. to 9 p.m., May 17 at VegeNation, in Las Vegas. Appetizers, entrees and desserts will be brought to you by Chefs Jesse Moreno, MGM, Donald Lemoerle, VegeNation, Holly Fonda, Bite Vegan Bakery, Johnny Churst, MTO Café and Shane Stuart, Grass Roots. Each chef will provide one course. Hibiscus punch, mango iced tea and peach sangria will be served. The evening includes raffle prizes. Food Revolutions Day is a day of global action to keep cooking skills alive and put compulsory practical food education back on the school curriculum. English celebrity chef, restaurateur and media personality, Jamie Oliver, spearheaded this food education campaign because he passionately believes that, by educating children about food in a fun and engaging way, we can
equip them with the basic skills they need to lead healthier, happier lives, for themselves and their future families. “Food Revolution Day is about getting children excited about food,” says Oliver. “Helping them get food smart and setting them up for a long, healthy life. Every child should understand where food comes from, how to cook it, and how it affects their body – and my aim is to make that happen. Children today are the first generation predicted to live shorter lives than their parents because of poor diet and inactivity, and it’s our responsibility to change that.” All proceeds go to Create A Change Now (CreateAChangeNow.org), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that educates and empowers children and their families in the fight against childhood obesity. General admission is $75. Tickets available at FoodRevolutionDay2016cacn. bpt.me. Location: VegeNation, 616 East Carson Ave., Suite 120, Las Vegas.
As a celebrity, do you see yo u rse l f a s a co n d u i t to facilitate a shift away from unnatural lifestyles? Yes. The reason I decided to write a book was because I’ve been struggling with a bunch of different ailments in secret for a long time. When I began working with my integrated health coach, Elizabeth Troy, I started to heal for the first time in all the years of reading books on health, diet and fitness, seeing doctors, taking loads of pills and spending crazy amounts of money on all of these activities. I want to help people struggling to regain their health to get answers. Gerry Strauss is a freelance writer in Hamilton, NJ. Connect at GerryStrauss@aol.com. natural awakenings May 2015

MO Free Vegas began with one Facebook post on the March Against Monsanto Las Vegas event page asking if people wanted to meet at a local custom t-shirt and print shop and help organize the first march. Fifteen people attended that meeting. The group planned to pass out flyers for the march at First Friday and poster making parties were planned. To show solidarity, the GMO Free Vegas group decided that everyone attending the rally and march should wear red shirts. In order to raise money for the flyers, bracelets and printed shirts were made and sold. Any additional required funds rest of the money came out-of-pocket from members. Becoming organized, the group met with Metro police, passed out flyers, participated in parades and dreamed about how many people would actually come and participate in the rally, march and protest. GMO Free Vegas speculated between 200-400 people might show up, but it was suggested the numbers could be much higher.
“Why march? I march because I know that we can feed the world using organic farming. I march for the millions of people who don’t know about the dangers of GMO’s.” — Sebastian Murnane On the morning of May 25, 2012 in Las Vegas the wildest expectations of the group were exceeded. Metro police estimated an attendance of over 2,500 beautiful people dressed in red. The Review Journal and Channel 3 were in attendance. NBC news picked up Channel 3’s coverage and, that day, GMO Free Vegas made national news. The Las Vegas March Against Monsanto was one of the most successful marches in the country, with one of the highest attendance per capita. Members couldn’t believe how a few people were capable of so much!
“I march because I don’t want another little 11 year old girl to lose her 62 year old grandfather to GMOs. I march because I know that the body can heal itself with the proper diet. I march to spread the word of true good health as I am coming to know, thanks to the Gerson Therapy.” —Andrea
Greater Las Vegas
The second March Against Monsanto was downtown, but this time every news source was in attendance and reporting. We walked to the Federal Courthouse Building, marched on the steps and demanded awareness about GMOs. On May 24, 2014, GMO Free Vegas held their third march with 3,500 of their neighbors. Closing down the strip for two hours, the group handed out 25,000 flyers as they made their way to the famous Las Vegas sign.
“I march to spread awareness and help Educate, Empower and Evolve this movement in the hopes that one day enough educated people eating organically will tip the scales and GMOs will be a thing of the past.” —Anthony Foresta Since the 2014 march GMO Free Vegas has continued to create awareness throughout Las Vegas, as well as globally. The group created Corn and Currency Revolt, a global Call to Action (CTA) requesting people to “Boycott GMO Corn Now!” and joining the global event on July 25, 2015. People are asked to immediately boycott all non-organic corn, GMO high fructose corn syrup products, corn meal, canned corn, corn in restaurants, processed foods that contain corn and corn products and tell merchants and restauranteur why you are participating. Also, people were requested to send $1 to their representatives, asking to buy back their vote to protect our food supply. The Corn and Currency Revolt Call to Action was reported as far away as Costa Rico.
“Monsanto is responsible for creating Agent Orange, Roundup and other toxins that threaten human health and our environment! I want my children to know what it’s like to grow up in a world where we don’t have to worry about how an apple is grown.” —Ana Maria Robles The focus for this year’s May 23 march is a Grow Your Own food festival, highlighting local gardeners and farmers’ markets. GMO Free Las Vegas is supporting the gardening programs at local schools within the Clark County School District by demonstrating that it is so easy to
advertorial grow a garden that they are teaching elementary school kids, in the middle of the Mojave desert and having great success. The group hopes to inspire everyone to attempt a little food sovereignty for GMO labeling and to end the cronyism caused by the agriculture industry.
“Altering the DNA of our food supply goes against the teachings of m faith and inhibits our ability to experience good health. I want my grandchildren to experience the kind of pure food I had growing up in a small farming community. Humans have a right to know what they are consuming and corporations should be held accountable for the products they take to market. The future of our children and our planet hinges on what choices are made today.” —Mary Cody To teach the adult community to grow plentiful, beautiful gardens using the least amount of resources with the best results, the group will have booths and demos throughout the Grow Your Own Food Festival. In addition, GMO Free Vegas will offer classes on composting, “Ask a Gardener” areas and we are hoping to get together enough cups, soil and seeds to have everyone walk away with at least one plant with care instructions. The majority of the GMO Free Vegas organizers had never even been to a protest march before the first March Against Monsanto. Group members have never had organizational meetings with police, made protest posters or volunteered (certainly not to hand out informational flyers while standing in the Las Vegas sun). GMO Free Vegas organizers are not extremists, just a group of compassionate people that share, with their neighbors, information about real food, human health and the health of the planet. The group gathers together every Wednesday to socialize and strategize about how to change the world.
“Do you really wanna know why I march? I march because I am [expletive deleted] off. Removing GMOs from our diet also removed the need for inhalers, allergy medicines, as well as other medicines. Never imagined our government would subsidize untested, unresearched food like substances, and not disclose those facts. I’m (expletive deleted) that Monsanto, as well as others profit on the ‘average Joe’s’ lack of knowledge. I will continue to march until there is justice and food purity for all of us.” —Christine Foresta Location: 517 Fremont St., Las Vegas. The group will be meeting at 10 a.m. on May 23, Beauty Bar Las Vegas Rally begins at 10:30 a.m. The march begins on Fremont East at 11 a.m. starts down Fremont Street Experience, up to the Federal Court House Building, then back down to Beauty Bar. The expected end time is at 1pm with a semi-farmers’ market where GMO Free Vegas will have an organic farm-fresh veggies available for purchase. Angie Morelli is a local activist and organizer for GMO Free Vegas.

“I have my life back!”
—Dr William B
“I am a practicing anesthesiologist in Georgia who was being forced to quit treating patients because of severe, intractable migraine headaches. I had seen specialists and tried all manner of medications to no avail. Most recently the headaches were so bad that I was taking Imitrex at least three times daily. My whole life revolved around my migraines. I happened to meet Dr. Eells through a friend and he mentioned that he hasn’t had one migraine patient yet not 100% better with his therapy. I was skeptical but joined Restoration Neurology. Less than one month later I am 100% better! No migraines! Off board certified physicians medications! I have my life back! Restoration Neurology I would absolutely recommend Restoration Neurology to any and every one!” 702-796-3847 Free consultation • Satisfaction guaranteed
