A Journey In

By Karen Rae Cook

What is water fasting? Water fasting has become popular in the wellness world, especially for those looking to lose some

weight. Fasting in general has been around for centuries. It's been a big part of spirituality among many

religious and spiritual communities. In the early 1900s, water fasting started to play a role in both weight management and disease prevention. Today, water fasting for health or fitness reasons is becoming

more and more common.

Here's a short story about my recent

7-Day water fasting journey.

My daughter Lenoir and I did a lot of

research on water-only-fasting and I

have to admit I was a bit skeptical

about it. However, As it turns out

there has been a significant amount

of research and testing related to

Water-Only-Fasting and it's benefits.

Health & Healing

Will Follow Fasting Jentezen Franklin

You may be wondering what else you can have on a water fast. A water fast is true to its name. You

drink water only. No coffee, no tea,

no alcohol, no zero-calorie sports

drinks, or any other beverage. Water only. I have experienced many different

types of fasting over the years.

6

It was in January, my birthday month. I decided to go to the beach

with my daughter Lenoir, for some

rest and relaxation. With my birthday in mind I was scoping out

special places to dine for the big

celebration as we typically do here in the USA. My daughter decided this was a

good time to go on a 7-Day water

fast and asked me to join her. I

agreed mostly to give her my support and it seemed like a good

time because we were already in a

relaxed mode. Oh well, no special

birthday dinner this year I thought. My daughter's experience of the fast

followed her typical path, mine not

so. I was hungry the first and second day followed by some pretty

intense weakness for the remaining days. It was tough going I have to

say. Lenoir even had the energy to

exercise! Me, I pretty much became

a limp noodle the whole time. My

body never kicked into "this is great

mode". But I did lose 10 pounds in

the 7 days. This kind of weight loss

is pretty common on a water fast, but here is what I didn't expect.

I lost all taste and desire to drink

coffee! Now this is a big deal for me. I have been a "gotta have your

morning coffee" kind of gal for, well

let's be kind and say over 20 years. The thought of my usual organic coffee with non dairy creamer and stevia was just, yuck! I started to have a cup of tea instead. This is weird, I just didn't see it coming. I have a few theories on why, but that is for another discussion. The second unexpected result from my 7-Day water fast was that alcohol made me sick. My guess is that I had just done a pretty good detox cleanse and my body was having no part of messing it up! It took a few months before coffee sounded good to me. I still get a headache even with one glass of wine! Our bodies do talk to us, we just need to learn how to listen. Have you ever considered doing a water-only-fast? Or maybe you have. If you have, I would love to hear about your water fast experience. For More Info Contact Karen Rae Cook @ NewEarthShamans.org

MY

TESTIMONY

HEALING BREAST CANCER 85 % of breast cancer occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. Get a screening mammogram once a year. Do regular self-breast exams. On June 28, 2018 went for a routine mammogram; the next day, I received a call from my GYN doctor’s office. The radiologist requested me to have a repeat mammogram in 3-D and ultrasound. They wanted to re-examine because there were many suspicious areas—I scheduled a repeat mammogram and ultrasound the following week. The radiologist who came in after testing told me the areas of concern were suspicious. He recommends I have a biopsy of the sites. I was praying and believing God for complete healing during that time, and the areas would be gone when I went back to his office —on July 31, 2018.

When I returned for the results I was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. I was in shock and disbelief, but God had another plan to heal me through my treatment. I went through chemotherapy, radiation, and lumpectomy. I am now cancer-free by the grace of God. While on this journey, my oncologist also recommended cutting back on my meat and sugar intake. I did some research and discovered that a plant-based diet was important for my recovery and healing process. I started on the plant based diet as recommended, however, I eventually added some chicken and fish. I also added supplements and vitamins from the company I work with, Peak performance, and it helped me not feel so tired through my journey. Ginger and mint tea helped with nausea, and I was able to eat small frequent meals.

My encouragement is to trust and believe in Jesus Christ as your lord and savior the great physician and healer. Eat a healthy diet and exercise to your comfortability. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. “ John 3:16

Forty thousand women and 430 men die of breast cancer each year in the United States. African American women have a 31% breast cancer mortality rate-the highest of any U.S. racial or ethnic group. Among women younger than 45, breast cancer incidences are higher among African Americans than White women. About 1 in 8 U.S. women (12.4%) will develop invasive breast cancer throughout their lifetime. 85 % of breast cancer occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.

Step into Self-Care and Love in 2022 Article Written By Dalzenia Sams

Meet Dalzenia Sams - Texas-based artist and the CEO of Dalzenia’s Global Galleries for Peace. Creator of murals, paintings, gardens, and unique floral arrangements. Sams is a published and International bestselling author whose heartfelt dream is to help others who feel ready to take a stand, claim their ultimate freedom by ''healing their heart through art” as they release the pains of sexual violation, find their personal power, heal and express the joy of being alive with art. Dalzenia’s Website: www.Artist4Peace.com

It was a delight being 15 and waking daily to massive blue skies dappled with puffy white or pale pink clouds. Beautiful birds darting from tree to fence gathering cicadas, or crickets, while butterflies flutter on a breeze of sweet scents gently wafting gardenias, roses, and petunias. As I walked to the open field a deep breath takes in the rich smell of black soil being plowed over soft green meadow grass, now tucked underneath the ground, the two elements married to prepare an earthy fertile bed to birth majestic corn stalks or underground peanuts or big, sweet watermelons with sun kissed vines sprawling in between rows. I truly enjoyed the balance of safety and freedom with the protective love of my parents on our rural farm. Who could guess the return of my oldest cousin from Vietnam would shatter and change my inner and outer world forever? Rape. Deliberate power and control over another person’s body and well-being. Incest? Raped, often by a trusted, admired, even loved male family member. It was disruptive, disorienting, and ugly… heightened by his taunting me the next day. My uncle joined him, together jeering, pointing fingers at me saying words that my mind only remembers as a blur.

8

Disbelief that these two military men trusted in my family were attacking my self-esteem, deliberately devaluing me into some object for their personal amusement. I retreated to the back of the house; my parents were out. I prayed to be physically safe waiting for their return. I shut down and put on a ‘’happy face.’’ Who could I trust and feel I would be believed? No one. I was alone in this new crippling reality. Months later, still confused; I received a card from Kathi H. a friend from Girl Scout camp. It offered a message I held onto ‘’to get by’’ for years: “To Thine Own Self Be True “. I didn’t know who I was anymore. However, I was determined to keep going. I prayed, questioning my purpose. Knock, knock? I read books and articles incessantly for answers and signs. I wish I could say it was a short journey back to myself. It was not. There were many setbacks, I feel, that were set ups for the Creator's amazing revelations, blessings, and miracles. For instance, the third rape occurred around 1981 and I seriously entertained suicide.

However, at that time while attending a business workshop for six months I had befriended two women who were trauma therapists from Portland Oregon. They recognized I was not OK and intervened. I believe that was when I truly faced the patterns of abuse and needing deep healing to thrive. Using my superpower of selfexpression, through art, I used creative resiliency to continue while my trust of people was low. Art for my heart, mirror work, meditations, words affirming my worthiness and therapy were building blocks to a foundation of my self-love with self-care. Releasing anger, loneliness, despair, to clear any stuck emotions from repeated hurts was key as I came to know and love myself. In 2000 after years of commissioned art works for others I turned a corner and did my 1st painting for myself (reflection of my soul) titled ‘’Ultimate Freedom’’. Not for school, a show, or clients, but for me. It was empowering and freeing – It allowed me to heal from the past. Now, every day I rejoice in loving massive blue skies, fluffy white clouds, and butterflies flirting around my sweetscented, colorful zinnias, gardenias, and roses. Walking through my garden, I take a deep breath and relax. Please join me, I am home…

THE AMAZING POWER OF GRATITUDE

By Jo Ann Rotermund

Jo Ann Rotermund, author, speaker, and forgiveness coach, spent her life being a victim until 2001, when her study of forgiveness helped heal her past and bring personal power, freedom, and joy into everything she does. Now retired from a 30 year career in social research and married 54 years, Jo Ann, who is absolutely passionate about forgiveness, has committed the rest of her life to inspiring others to make forgiveness a natural way of living, healing themselves and their world in the process. Her book, THE FORGIVENESS HABIT: an Action Plan for Healing Ourselves and Our Planet, with a foreword by Desmond Tutu, provides all you need to know to start making forgiveness a natural part of your life. The book is available thru Amazon and thru Jo Ann Rotermund at www.theforgivenesshabit.org

This article is the third in a series I am writing for this online magazine. The series is about forgiveness and how to make it a powerful and very useful part of your life. The first article (in the first issue of this magazine) was about forgiveness and what it is and what it is not. The second article (in the second issue of this magazine) was about three habits we all have that make forgiveness seem so very difficult.

This third article is about a beautiful habit we can all develop that will help make forgiveness a natural part of one’s life. That very powerful habit is GRATITUDE, expressing lots of gratitude every single day. Gratitude can turn an ordinary day into a great day. Expressing gratitude will uplift your mood. I call gratitude a practice because very few of us grow up with any idea of the power of living in gratitude. Even after we learn about its awesome power, we still have to remember to make a conscious effort to practice it daily until it becomes a way of life for us.

There are two reasons gratitude is so very powerful and therefore so very useful: 1. You cannot be unhappy and grateful at the same time. It is mentally and emotionally impossible. I have often utilized this knowledge to clear and open my heart space and for use in groups I am leading. Everyone loves thinking, writing, and sharing what they are grateful for because it feels so good! 2. Thoughts you focus on multiply and give you more of what you adore. When you think upsetting, angry, or negative thoughts, your mind will automatically create more of those thoughts. Therefore, several times a day, every day, write down some things, situations, and people for which you are grateful, and your thoughts will be transformed! Your mind, then gives you more thoughts of gratitude, love, and joy. You are suddenly free and able to see the world with new eyes – the eyes of the heart.

Seeing with those eyes enables you to think the thoughts and take the actions which give you the amazing, magical, miraculous life you crave. Gratitude, when practiced as a powerful way of living, changes everything. Even after we learn about its awesome power, we still have to make a conscious effort to practice it daily, until it becomes a way of life for us. Expressing gratitude can turn an ordinary day into a great day. The more you are in a state of gratitude the more you will attract things to be grateful for. Practicing gratitude daily is one of the most powerful, positive habits you can develop. Make gratitude the background music for your life. If all you did was look for things to appreciate, and then express your gratitude, you would live a joyous spectacular life and forgiveness would become a natural part of that amazing life. Go for it!!!

Poetry for the Soul! Diabetes Inspired Poems By Whitney Olmo

As I run the hedges of the rosemary vineyard. Trying to find the paces of the race. The sun is beaming a crystal amber against the arabesque morning sky. There is a strive for perfection with the quick check of my blood sugar reading. Before the start of the race. My heart mildly fluttering. My mind trying to find serene. The wind gently blowing in my hair. As the race grows closer, I find myself rechecking my numbers to relax my mind and apprehension. What can I do? I need to use a grounding technique quickly. So, I imagine myself at sea. There is a beautiful lighthouse at a distance and the sound of the windchimes soothe me. The race begins....

☆♡Perance*♡☆ Like an intriguing, silent wind. I feel the intensity of your eyes, seeking mine. Like water, balance is invisible cool, warm tempered. The water’s edge is clear sending ripples down one's spine as goose bumps of apprehensiveness arise. Your subtle touch shakes me quietly inside. Moving my blood sugars like candy to a mime, movements unlike mine.

Whitney Olmo Whitney Olmo is a Diabetes Awareness Advocate. Whose love for supporting people with diabetes, leads her to care for and educate the community on a personal level.

Never be High, Never be Low, Just be Natural.

The balance of two is key in exotic rhythmic music of fun. A rhythm of symmetric perfection of two different worlds combined by the waters ripples with minute communication align.

Shamanic Transformational Healing! by Ann Adam

Shamanism is an ancient healing practice that has been utilized for thousands of years in many parts of the world. Shamanism is a form of energy healing to transform imbalances in mind, emotions, and physical bodies by connecting people with our innate wisdom through nature and spirit. Everyone and everything is alive and is energy. All energy can be shapeshifted and transformed. The role of the Shaman is to facilitate this connection. Can anyone be a shamanic practitioner? There are many ways a person is called to shamanism; some people are called to shamanism by their ancestors or through visions or dreams. My ancestors were of the Lipan Apache, Cree Native Americans, and Indigenous peoples of Guanajuato Mexico. I remember as a child seeing my aunts practice traditional healing (curanderas), and my father’s uncle was a powerful medicine man. When I was in my teen years my left brain told me that it was all superstition and ignorance. In my early 20’s I had spontaneous experiences with spirits and healing; true to left brain people, every time I had an experience I would happen upon information via a book or group, and I would study and apply the practices to my own healing of traumas.

I learned how everything, and everyone is alive and is energy that can be shifted and transformed through shamanic energy healing. I began my own healing of traumas with traditional therapy which I found helpful in understanding my traumas and to realize that what I had experienced had affected me emotionally, mentally, and the unhealed trauma was affecting me physically. But I felt stuck in the victim mentality and felt a need to connect with myself and heal in a different way. I began to hear and sense my Cree great grandmother Isabel calling me to the traditional ways. With shamanic healing I was able to release and transformed crystallized energy embedded in my body from my traumas. And other gifts were connecting with the earth, spirit, and all of nature. It felt so magical in some ways and challenging in others, it was calling me to my innate wisdom and to follow spirit when it called (it always calls but we don’t always listen) it was a challenge to let go of the many beliefs about myself that kept me in imbalance and to embrace the love that is abundant in nature and spirit.

THERE IS

POWER IN THE PAUSE! By: Kamilah McShine-Gregory, Felicitea Lifestyle + Wellness Co. What has your gut been pulling you towards lately? In a society driven by action, taking a pause isn’t always the easiest. I have to continuously check myself on honoring my own time, feelings, and energy. It is in this honoring, that I created a shift. When we can shift our perspective and our environment with genuine intention, we can respond rather than react. We can put more love and trust in ourselves. We can lead by Spirit rather than people. Healing is not always convenient or comfortable. This space of being, this sense of deeper awareness and connection, evolves from the lessons and blessings you allow you to see, feel, and embrace your wholeness. Wholeness requires exploring and healing the whole self. There are many ways to tap into healing and using intuition offers the freedom to do them all as we see fit. To deepen our trust in our own intuition we first have to ask ourselves... Am I willing to let go and trust my intuition? Am I willing to listen? How do we listen? Stillness. Life is full of these little messages if we open ourselves up to seeing and feeling them. Life is happening around us. Each day we see how society is impacted and that in turn can have its own impact on us, or not. We learn that both joy and pain manifest in different ways- in

the world and within our mind and body. The mission, if we chose to accept, is finding that sweet balance of being fully present in our mind and body while navigating the world we live in. The act of staying grounded. But first, we have to be open to being still enough to hear the messages. A shift will take time. But we are powerful, we are creators, and we are born healers. Choice of action is our power.

TIME TO TAP IN! By: Kamilah McShine-Gregory, Felicitea Lifestyle + Wellness Co.

There are times when we may find ourselves looking outward in search of answers or understanding. This often leads to blaming and disappointment. We have an incredible internal navigation system to tap into: Our Intuition. Our intuition is insight from our own deeper consciousness. This deeper consciousness is best when it comes from our divine source, Spirit. It opens up our mind and body to our deepest needs and desires for clarity in our direction and purpose. In stillness, you deepen your intuition. Time to tap In! Start by creating your own routine to engage in your self-care practices. Give yourself grace as you navigate the triumphs and trials Choose the time of day that feels right for your body and your schedule- morning, midday, or evening. Then, grab your journal, a warm cup of tea, and sit with your self. Give yourself permission to chart your own course. Trust that you know what you need. Enjoy your sweet spots!

The Act of Forgiveness A healthy person isn’t just one with a good physical condition, but also one with a good mental condition. Mental health includes both our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. How we think, feel, and act is all tied together, and determines how we handle the daily challenges of life, our ability to relate with others, and make healthy choices. However in our relationships with family, friends, at work, school, businesses, et cetera, we are exposed to situations that can greatly affect our mental health, upturning our state of minds. Wounds fester inside of us, and we hurt badly. In fact, it is very apparent that we are a people filled with hurts, as is evidenced with an upsurge in cases of depression, suicide rates, drug abuse, and visits to the psychiatrists and psychologists. Nevertheless, there is one drug we fail to use; one drug that is inexpensive and free for us. It is none other than forgiveness; a deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance toward a person or group who has harmed you, regardless of whether they actually deserve your forgiveness. It can be quite hard to forgive that alcoholic parent, abusive partner, bully at school, dominating boss, insensitive sibling, but I dare to ask: Is holding onto that hurt worth your happiness, joy, and laughter?

16

When you learn to embrace forgiveness and let go of your hurts, bitterness, and anger, the burden on your shoulder will be lifted. It doesn’t mean that you will forget about it completely, rather you will learn to live with it. Remember, though, that time heals wounds. But how do you truly forgive and let go? Acknowledge what has been done to you, accept what you can’t change, step away from being the victim, choose to either reconcile or set boundaries, and move forward with your life. Most times, the feeling may return—forgiveness is a process and not a singular action— but stay committed to the path you have chosen. The decision to live a life filled with happiness lies with you. No one has the power to take it away except you allow it. When your mind is at peace, your physical condition will be top-notch, and your body, mind, and soul can work effectively. Choose to practice forgiveness daily, and erase grievances from your heart just as you would with an eraser on a written word. Your heart deserves it, and You deserve it too.

WARNING SIGNS OF MENTAL ILLNESS By Susan Downs Have you ever looked back on the past week or two of your life and realized that things are different. And you are different as well. You are not enjoying your day to day experiences. In fact, you may be dreading the days and weeks ahead. It is hard for you to get out of bed in the morning. And you really don’t feel like taking a shower, getting dressed and going to work or to school. Life has become boring and difficult. You have become isolated and lonely. Something is wrong, but you’re not quite sure what it is. You may be experiencing symptoms of a mental illness. Don’t worry, you are not alone. There is relief out there. According to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, there are ten warning signs of a mental illness: 1. Excessive worrying or fear 2.Extreme mood changes, including uncomfortable “highs” or feelings of euphoria 3.Avoidance of friends and social activities 4.Changes in sleeping habits, feeling tired, or having low energy 5.Changes in eating habits, such as increased hunger or lack of appetite. 6.Abuse of substances like alcohol or drugs. 7.Multiple physical ailments without obvious causes, such as headaches, stomach aches, or vague and ongoing “aches and pains.” 8.Prolonged or strong feelings of irritability or anger. 9.An intense fear of weight gain or concern with appearance. 10. Confused thinking, or problems concentrating or learning. Mental illness is a disease of the brain. It is not diagnosed with a blood test or and X-ray.It is not caused by bad parenting of lack of will power. If you are experiencing 3 or more of these symptoms over a two-week period, make an appointment with your family doctor or a mental health practitioner. The earlier you begin treatment for a mental illness, the better the outcome will be.

Skin is a very important organ, often taken for granted, sometimes even forgotten. But what is skin? The Skin is the body’s largest and most vital organ that covers the entire outside of the body, forming a protective barrier against pathogens and injuries from the environment. It is about 2 mm thick and weighs approximately six pounds. Since the skin is porous, it absorbs anything you apply on it. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health investigated the skin's absorption rates of chemicals found in drinking water. It showed that the skin absorbed an average of 64% of total contaminant dosage. When A2B Naturals was formed, we wanted to share the importance of healthy skin and how if taken well care of, the skin can act as a natural, mechanical barrier between your body and pathogens. At A2B, all our products are handmade, in small fresh batches, from single source ingredients that are 100% pure and organic. Some of the most common ingredients we use include: Maple, Aloe Vera,

20

Tea Tree, Shea, Coconut Oil, Jojoba with signature essential oils. Each of these ingredients assist different skin types in different ways: Maple - Assists with reducing skin inflammation, redness, and blemishes. Maple also hydrates the skin. It is an anti-aging ingredient that can reduce the signs of aging. Aloe Vera -Soothes & hydrates dry, rough, or irritated skin. Aloe Vera is used to relieve sunburns, razor bumps and other skin conditions. Tea Tree - The natural anti-inflammatory properties in Tea Tree help soothe dry skin, acne, psoriasis, and eczema by reducing itching and irritation. Tea Tree can also be used to combat oily skin and may even reduce the appearance of dark spots. Shea - Pure natural unrefined Shea Butter contains maximum moisturizing properties. Shea is rich in vitamins (A, E, F and K) and is great for moisturizing, reducing inflammation, and skin smoothing. It works wonders on heels, elbows, and knees.

SKIN VITAL Article written By Alexandria Collins - A2B Naturals is a proudly Canadian and womanowned skin care brand for all skin types, tones and genders.

Coconut Oil - Helps bolster your skin's protective barrier layer, trapping moisture inside and keeping skin supple and hydrated. Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial for irritated, chafed skin and reduces inflammation. It also increases collagen production and minimizes the signs of aging. Jojoba - What can't this beautiful oil do? It is indeed a great moisturizer! It is antibacterial, an antioxidant, noncomedogenic (won't block your pores), hypoallergenic, and helps control sebum production. Jojoba can also help promote collagen synthesis and speed up wound healing.

Valerie Lyons

I absolutely love Ft. Lauderdale, the beach, the sun, the palm trees! I love it all! In late June of 2021, I had the pleasure of traveling to Ft. Lauderdale with my dear friend Vanessa to visit her sister Renee and her brother-in -law Frank. I was thrilled. This was the first trip I had taken since 2019 and I was eager to leave the confines of New York and spread my wings! Prior to the pandemic, I would have reserved a shuttle van to the airport, which would have meant getting up super early to jump in a van and make a number of pit stops to pick up other passengers on the way to the airport. This time around, I chose to reserve a luxury car to pick me up from home to take me to the airport. This was the first time in my life, I was consciously choosing luxury! I wanted to be intentional with starting my vacation early! We stayed in Florida for 6 days and maximized each and every moment -- eating at great restaurants, relaxing on the beach, and simply enjoying each other’s company which truly was a novelty. I almost forgot what it was like to be with people!

"Vacation as a Way of Life”

When we arrived back in New York, a car was waiting for Vanessa and I (yes, I booked the luxury car service round trip!) to drop us off at our respective homes. It was then that the thought came to me “Vacation as a Way By Valerie J. Lyons, CPC, LMHC, CRC of Life” This is now my life motto! https://www.valeriejlyonsenterprises.com

“Vacation as a Way of Life” for me means planning to take time of vs. waiting to take time off. It means creating time for travel, near or far. It also means allowing my physical health, mental health and spiritual health to lead me It is a reshuffling of priorities. It means work is a priority not THE priority. It means not getting myself worked up over things that I have no control over.

Poetry for the Soul Dream By Velisa Oliver

It’s ok for a person to dream No matter how big or small Or even ridiculous it may seem

Go ahead and dream It is all for a reason God put it in your heart To bring it to pass at The right time and season

Don’t listen to the negative talk Of the people around you And what they have to say

You don’t need anyone’s approval Because guess what They’re going to talk any way

So go ahead and dream Put it in God’s hands When it comes to pass That’s when you know It was all a part if his plan

KEEPING YOUR PETS HEALTHY STORY BY JENNY RAE TAPIA Here’s a short story about how I care for my pets. Animals need proper health and nutrition like a human does. Sure, pets don’t need to be looked after as closely as an infant, however, it is important to still acknowledge your pet’s well-being by giving them proper food, grooming, and emotional care for them to live for as long as possible. One of the most important tasks in the care of your pet is making sure your pet has proper nutrition. For example, I have two pets, a dog named Shakira, and a cat named Becky. They both have very different diets, and I must pick out different foods for their specific digestive systems. My dog can eat different types of ham from bologna to turkey meat, while my cat is not able to because she will throw it up. Cats have a different digestive system than dogs and our cat Becky is not able to digest that type of meat well. I discovered that I must give her fish or anything in a can that is softer for her tummy for lunch. Most of the time, our cat will eat cat food from a bag, I usually buy the dry cat food in a bag from Walmart and give her about 2 servings at a time since she is a small cat. My dog Shakira will eat anything and everything she is given except for dog treats. My grandfather got her use to eating human food that she won’t always want to eat normal dog food all the time unless it’s a snack. I usually give her about 2-3pieces of bologna a day and give her one serving of dog food from a bag a day that I put on the side as a snack for her throughout the day. Make sure to always check if your pets have enough water as well, especially if you live in an area where it is constantly humid! Water is very essential for pets and it important they always have water as they can be active a lot of the time and need water to stay hydrated. Taking your pets to a veterinarian is also very important to maintain their health! The veterinarian can indicate whether your pet is sick, has fleas/ticks, is injured, and they are able to check for their nutrition intake. They can also decide what kind of diet your pet should go on to stay active and healthy for as long as possible. They also check for any lumps that can indicate a sign of illness or disease that would need to be treated for right away.

26

The last thing you want to check for and be aware of is the physical activity of your pet. Do what you can to take your dog for a walk, play with yarn with your cat, play fetch the toy, and show them some tricks! Pets love attention and deserve the love and affection! Physical activity is a form of showing your pets you love them and that you love spending time with them. I always love cuddling with my dog and cat during the day on my days off work, cuddling shows them that they can trust me. Life is short and it is important to spend as much time as possible with your pets while they are around. Research and story by Jenny Rae Tapia

THE SMITH PERSPECTIVE PROJECT ARTICLE WRITTEN BY JOE SMITH PHOTO ON LEFT IS OF JAMES BONATO DIRECTOR/PRODUCER OF THE FILM/DOCUMENTARY PROJECT (FAR LEFT), JHALEN, JHAROL, BARBARA & JOE (FAR RIGHT) SPRING OF 2019 - PHOTO BELOW OF JOE & BARBARA'S WEDDING DAY

A PERSPECTIVE OF PEACE & PERSERVERANCE The Smith Perspective Project: A perspective of Peace & Perseverance in and through life challenges: There are times in each of our lives when we face hard challenges, but if we can manage to keep the faith and sprinkle in a little hope, there is nothing that shall be impossible. I have heard people say, “You are a good man, you know?” The way you take care of your wife, Barbara, and your children. My Christian Faith and what I committed to Barbara on our wedding day…well not much more to be said. I believe that every challenge in life comes to grow us into what God purposed us to become. On our wedding day, we committed our vows to each other and unto God. I believe I have gained the most benefit by keeping my vows to my wife, Barbara and our sons, Jharol & Jhalen. I am the better! My name is Joe Harold Smith. I was born in Simpson County, MS. The 8th of 9 siblings. I grew up on a small farm. My perspective on life was greatly influenced by my mother, father, grandfather and my 8 siblings. We are a close-knit family and community. Barbara and I met in Gaithersburg, MD in Spring 1984. Only God could have orchestrated our meeting in Gaithersburg, MD. I am from MS. Barbara is from GA.

28

Early in our married life, as professionals at IBM, we had a plan to have a family of us and 3 children; well, God had a different plan. In the summer of 1996 my wife, Barbara was diagnosed with a crippling brain tumor that changed everything. God has taken care of us. As of October 28, 2021, by His grace and mercy, we celebrated the 25th year of recovery and healing. Our faith, family, & support system have kept us here and still expecting the greater. We have had our share of the ups and downs of this life’s journey, but we are still on the battlefield, and grateful! Our philosophy on life is to intentionally seek the good in every situation and circumstance. Positive attitude and intentionally seeking and expecting best outcomes mold us to be what our creator meant for us to be. I heard it said “Form good habits and become a slave to them” ~ Og Mandino The Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth (BIBLE) reminds me that I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength! This verse has nourished my life over the years and continue to add to my life to this very minute. I found that routines help us maintain health and wellness as we seek fullness in our lives. No man is an island and, in my opinion, very few reach the goal of a healthy, wealthy, wise, and well-balanced status in this life without a system of care and encouragement. A balanced diet, reading books that nourish my mind and spirit, exercising, and singing are elements that are constant and routine in my life. On more thing, My favorite life lesson quote: Watch Your Thoughts; They become words Watch Your words; They Become actions Watch Your Actions: They Become Habits Watch Your Habits: They Become Your Character Watch Your Character; It Becomes Your Destiny

About Joe Harold Smith Joe Harold Smith was born in Simpson County, MS – The 8th of 9 siblings. He grew up on a small family farm. He earned a BS Degree from Jackson State University in Jackson, MS, with a major in Computer Science and a minor in Mathematics. Married to Barbara over 33 years. They have two grown children, Jharol (28) and Jhalen (25). In 1996, his wife Barbara, was stricken by a crippling brain tumor. In 2019 his family collaborated with a local videographer and documentary producer to help them share a portion of their story “The Smith Perspective” with the purpose of sharing their perspective on how they have, and continue, to deal with the ups and downs of life with difficult life challenges. Through this effort it is their desire to encourage, inspire, and possibly stimulate hope, where hope may have been lost. After all, how we approach life really is all about perspective. The Smith Family decided to share their story with us!

Making amends with our past creates room for expansion for the future. It becomes laborious to move forward in life if we never give ourselves permission to grow and live in the moment. To do this, we must be grounded and present. For years people would ask me, "where is your book?" Always shying away from the idea, I quietly laughed and would reply with, "I don't have one." I never imagined myself being an author. Yet, I noticed peculiar moments when I couldn't explain how my ability and efforts could produce the outcome I've experienced. It took me years to recognize the uniqueness of my life as God began revealing how I view my journey differently than most people. I knew it was a must-share. Throughout the years, there were times I encountered unusual experiences as usual until I recognized otherwise. It may have been months afterward, and sometimes years. In the process, I've identified others who are spiritually gifted and unaware of what their intuitive connection beholds and why God chose them.

A Spirit Warrior's Mindset gets to the core of the gift and guides readers with discovering their divine identity and unique power meant for their impact on humanity. God intends for His children to obtain wisdom through each other's experiences, become empowered, step out and practice what we've learned. Duplication and amplification. Instead, we've allowed past experiences to stunt our voices, impart fear, and hold us hostage. It's time to acknowledge our gifts and access our rightful place as children of the most high. I believe we all have miracle moments, and because we are not as genuinely connected to the Spirit of God as we can be, they aren't recognized. If we would look beyond the physical realm and not just move on to the next big thing, we would discover the miraculous messages meant to guide us with our physical walk here on earth. In A Spirit Warrior's Mindset, you'll discover 7 Distinctions of A Spirit Warrior and awaken your senses to the daily miracles surrounding you moment by moment so you'll no longer view occurrences as the norm but recognize the Spirit of God covers you. What is Type 2 Diabetes? RESEARCHED BY SHARON FANT, RN

Type 2 diabetes was previously called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-

onset diabetes. Type 2 diabetes may account for about 90 percent to 95 percent of all diagnosed

cases of diabetes. Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include older age, obesity, family history of

diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, physical inactivity, and

race/ethnicity. African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, and some Asian

Americans and Pacific Islanders are at particularly high risk for type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is now the fastest spreading disease in human history. It’s incidence around the

world has doubled in the past 3 decades, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a global “pandemic”. Type 2 diabetes and the condition that lead to it, insulin resistance

(also called pre-diabetes) currently affect close to 30% of the world adult population. In the United States, diabetes affects an estimated 30+ million adults and teens, with an additional

100 million unsuspecting people walking around with pre-diabetes. Since diabetes is largely a

disease without symptoms as it develops, many of these people will not get a diagnosis until it is too late for a full recovery. I don’t want this to happen to you! Many people have been led to believe that having diabetes is no big deal because it has become

such an common affliction these days, and because so many diabetics seem to be living normal

lives due to all of the new drugs available to treat diabetes, and new technology for monitoring

blood glucose levels and administering insulin injections. In addition, most people believe that type 2 diabetes is just another unfortunate normal occurrence while growing old, just like cancer and

heart disease. No one is free who is not master of himself. - Epictetus

Reiki Energy

by Leana Eugene

Reiki is an alternative healing technique for stress and relaxation that originated in Japan. Developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s, Reiki is now used all over the world in places such as hospitals and hospices.

The full treatment can take up to an hour to complete and throughout the process, the patient may feel sensations such as heat, pulsing or tingling while also feeling relaxed (Cleveland Clinic Wellness).

The term Reiki stems from two Japanese words, “rei” which means universal, and “ki”, which refers to life force energy (Cleveland Clinic Wellness). The universal life force energy is the foundation of Reiki energy.

There are no harmful effects from Reiki, the process is used in efforts to improve overall health. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Reiki treatment has the following benefits: detoxifying the body, dissolving energy blockages and tension, stimulating the immune system, relieving pain, stimulating tissue and bone healing, and increasing the vibrational frequency on physical, mental, and spiritual levels.

During a Reiki treatment, the patient lies on a massage table, and a Reiki practitioner serves as the catalyst connecting the patient and the universal life energy force. This energy flows through the hands of the practitioner to the patient. It is important to know that this energy is coming from the universal source, not the practitioner. Throughout the massage, the practitioner uses their palms in specific energy locations on the patient’s body, there is no pressure or manipulation.

34

This all happens through supplying the universal life force energy into the body. Reiki practitioners see patients for the following conditions: cancer, chronic pain, infertility, digestive problems, psychological illnesses, Parkinson’s disease and stress related diseases.

"Reiki can never and will never belong to just one person or one organization. Reiki is the spiritual heritage of all humanity."

- Dr. Mikao Usui

The Holistic

Approach to By: Sandra Mustopa

A child’s health is every parents concern and often parents want to avoid pharmaceutical

medication for babies or young children or

even want extra help alongside what their GP may be prescribing.

Let’s be completely honest with ourselves—the health

of one’s child comes down to a million little moments—

Fruit for lunch? A long nap? Stress over a math test? A holistic approach considers them all. From time-to-time, a child’s health comes down to a simple formula: Fever? Pass the ibuprofen. But when matters are more complicated—for instance, when there’s a chronic condition, like asthma, or a stress-related ailment, like migraines—popping a pill may not be enough. According to the holistic approach to pediatrics, the best way to get a kid healthy, and keep him that way, is to consider every aspect of his lifestyle—his diet, his environment, his way of handling stress. You might be wondering, “what’s the best way to take care of children’s wellness, all while providing quality nutrition, and natural support for their growing brains?”

Holistic medicine o ers the easiest ways to keep your kids healthy, happy, and t, while supporting mom’s ability to raise them with the guidance they need, but the independence they crave. Holistic or integrative medicine is surprisingly still considered ‘fringe’ in many medical communities, despite a substantial amount of research backing it’s e ectiveness and life-saving applications.

36

Integrative medicine when applied to children’s

wellness, simply means that a practitioner will use all

modalities available to address and treat the root cause

of symptoms, not merely the symptom itself.

This paradigm acknowledges the impact diet, lifestyle,

and environment can have upon your child’s gut health, nervous system, and immune health.

Integrative modalities include: • Acupuncture (many practitioners use laser therapy if your child has a fear of needles) • Food sensitivity testing • Nutrient de ciency testing • Cognitive evaluation • Compassionate patient care Raising kids in a holistic way begins at home, and there’s a lot still left to do if we want to raise a smarter, happier, and tter generation of children. But change is possible.

By prioritizing real food, plenty of activity, and time

spent away from the overstimulation of electronics, we

can help our children reach their potential in health, and in the rest of their lives.

Remember parents, your child’s health and happiness is worth advocating for.

My Healing Journey

Journey to a Holistic Approach to Health By Kate Marshall

At some point in my life I was bitten by one or more ticks that transmitted an infection from a bacteria called borrelia burgdorferi, also known as Lyme Disease. At another point this infection was activated, likely through physical and emotional trauma. When the symptoms began, it was much like a snowball effect. I didn’t know why I was having joint pain, nerve pain, anxiety, headaches and extreme fatigue. I went from doctor to doctor, and they weren’t quite sure either. Unsatisfied with the lack of definitive diagnosis, I delved into a lot of self-guided research. I was confused, as many of my symptoms matched those characteristics of many other diseases. Lyme is sometimes called the great imitator, making diagnosis difficult. Then I watched a documentary called “Under Our Skin”. It all made sense. After a year of inquiry, research and strong speculation I had Lyme, I found a doctor that agreed with me to make it official. Next came 8 months of antibiotics. Toward the end of this period, I got fed up with the abdominal pain and unabating symptoms. I decided this was not the path for me. I listened to my body and began my own treatment. I did my own research, gathered feedback from groups and others partaking in holistic treatments. This experience was incredibly empowering. Though much of it felt like a rollercoaster, I never relented, and I made progress. I spent about 8 years using herbs, essential oils, acupuncture, muscle testing and homeopathics. 38

I found unparalleled nutritional support which increased my energy, focus and mood. The last month, February of 2019 I used CBD oil and a turmeric blend called Golden Milk 2-3 times a day. This is what finally kicked me into a new realm of health. This journey of healing my body also involved healing my mind and soul. I removed myself from an unhealthy relationship in which I felt lost and oppressed then explored and implemented various personal development strategies to reconnect to who I am and who I am willing to be. I use great speakers like Louis Hay, Les Brown, Tony Robbins and Abraham Hicks. Our bodies take on our emotional stress which aids in disease. Until we overcome trauma and better regulate stress, healing cannot be complete. As a result of all that I have learned and been through, I now help people with nutritional support and sharing my knowledge of herbs and oils. I’m using various energy healing modalities too.

This is an approach to food that focuses on individuals' sensual awareness of the food and their experience of the food.

By paying close attention to how you feel as you eat, considering the texture and tastes of each mouthful, your body’s hunger and fullness signals, how different foods affect your energy and mood, you can learn to savor both your food and the experience of eating.

HOW EXERCISE HEALS By Sharon G. Fant, R.N.

Research shows that regular physical activity can help us recover more quickly, heal more easily, and get an edge over all kinds of disease and injury. In fact, exercise may just be nature’s best medicine. “There is no medication or nutritional supplement that even comes close to having all of the effects exercise does,” says David C. Nieman, PhD, author of The Exercise-Health Connection: How to Reduce Your Risk of Disease and Other Illnesses by Making Exercise Your Medicine. “It’s truly the best medicine we know of.” We tend to think of exercise as a preventive measure — something that helps us maintain our general fitness and keep excess weight at bay. But in reality, exercise has a vast range of healing influences on the body — influences that can help reverse negative biochemical trends, while improving our resiliency and immunity at virtually every level of our physiology. Good fitness has global healing effects, working simultaneously on multiple systems to improve mental, spiritual and physical health. In fact, exercise aids nearly every system in the body. Since these systems are interconnected, it can be difficult to categorize exercise’s many specific benefits. That’s why, in the interest of giving exercise at least a little more of its considerable due, we’ve collected a list seven (7) powerful ways exercise heals. Credits to ExperienceLife.Lifetime.Life
