Welcome December? Really? Where did this year go? We can’t be the only ones who are shaking our heads and wondering how we’ll fit everything in before December 25. We still have lots of shopping, wrapping, preparing and partying to do—and we’re sure you do, too. That’s why we’ve put together a super Summerdayz magazine. We’ve packed this issue with loads of Christmas and summer goodness—something we know you’ll love. If you want to take advantage of the beautiful sunny weather, but don’t want you or your littlies to be scorched in our hot, Aussie sun, you can’t go past Hollie and Harrie’s sunshade (you’ll be the most stylish on the beach), Rashoodz’s rashvest and hat combos, or Sunny Jim’s beach bags. Still have no idea what to get that little person in your life for Christmas and you’re running out of time to get to the shops? Our Gift Guide will have you sorted in no time. Finally, we wish you, our fabulous readers, a wonderful summer and Christmas break, we hope you get time to enjoy the great outdoors with your families, and we hope that 2014 is your best year yet—we know we’re excited at what the new year will bring.

Holiday Packing

Woes?

The festive season is upon us and many of us will be going away during the holidays. Even though we look forward to getting away (well, mostly, every mummy knows that a holiday with kids is not really a holiday for mum!) there are also a whole load of worries that accompany any trip. What will I wear? Do I still fit into my summer wardrobe? How am I going to fit enough clothes for a two-week vacation into my luggage allowance? Never mind also fit in all the kids’ clothes, too! So here are a few tips that might make the chore of packing easier: 1. Much as we might not want to do this, every holiday chalet, hotel and organised campsite will have some sort of laundry facilities, so we don’t actually need to pack two weeks’ worth of clothes for a two-week break. We need to pack for 3–4 days and just resign ourselves to doing a quick wash every few days. 2. Pre-plan your outfits. Lay out the clothes in advance and work out each outfit, right 10 | Anything but Ordinary • December January February 2013/14

down to shoes and accessories, and also look at the mix and match possibilities for the selected items. I generally start packing about 4–7 days before we go away, working outfit by outfit and also occasion to occasion—and I write it down. Once I have a rough clothing plan, I then go back to my wardrobe and work out what can be replaced by more versatile pieces and how each outfit can be recycled during the stay. Do this for yourself and also for the kids (but remember you will never change as many times as you think you will). 3. Be brutal. If you cannot pack every item in your desired wardrobe, cull those that don’t coordinate with other pieces and replace them with more versatile items; pack more accessories to keep outfits looking fresh. 4. How many shoes? First pack shoes in plastic bags closest to the suitcase wheels, that way you keep your clothes free from dirt and have the bags to hand when you repack at the end of the holiday. Be realistic when packing shoes, do you really need 5–6 pairs of shoes? Or can you reduce this number

Image talk with Ann Whitaker

Image Consultant

and thus reduce the weight and space shoes take up? 5. Put belts around the inside edge of the suitcase to avoid them getting squashed. Roll up undies and socks and use them inside shoes to help keep their shape, and in corners to fill in gaps. 6. Roll T-shirts, skirts and trousers rather than fold them; they pack smaller this way and don’t crease as badly. Also look at the fabrics you are packing, are they crease-resistant or will you need to iron them? If you won’t have access to an iron, leave these items behind, you won’t wear them anyway. 7. Pack travel-sized toiletries, not full-sized. If your favourite products don’t come in travel sizes, decant them into smaller bottles or take an almost empty item and throw it away before you come home. Pack toiletries in Ziploc bags to ensure they don’t spill on your clothing. 8. Consider your luggage, how heavy is your empty suitcase? Are you throwing away valuable clothing weight by using an old www.marliandmo.com.au

www.facebook.com/marliandmo

heavy suitcase? Can you carry your suitcase, handbag and cabin bag or will you need assistance? If all this seems too difficult and you don’t know where to start then why not visit House of Colour & Image. We will show you the right clothing colour shadings, shapes and styles that complement your individual colouring and your personality too, you will always feel confident in your appearance and look fabulous in those holiday snaps. House of Colour & Image will teach you the skills to know if your current wardrobe items should earn their place in your precious luggage space, whilst also showing you ways to update that wardrobe so it will provide multiple mix and match options for clothes, shoes and accessories and still be within your baggage allowance. Once upon a time there were two sisters—Sophie and Christie—who loved designer kids’ pyjamas and wondered how they could turn their passion for children’s sleepwear into a fun family business. Together they created MADC’S (mad seas!). They developed a truly unique range of fashion-forward PJs for boys and girls, and have gone on to have many wonderful sleepwear adventures! Actually, it’s no fairytale! When we created MADC’S we knew that awesome kids’ pyjamas needed to be durable,

long-lasting, comfortable and trendy. We also knew, from our own experience as mums, that kids don’t always go straight to bed when they get their pyjamas on. In fact, pyjama time can be the start of a whole new adventure! Sleepwear from MADC’S can go from playtime to bedtime. We make versatile, practical kids’ pyjamas that are loud, cool and fun! Our children’s sleepwear is so tough we called it sleepware. It’s like 100% cotton hardware. Ware, where, wear—it’s hardware, anywhere, sleepware!

74 | Anything but Ordinary • September October November 2013

The best way to keep your kids safe at the beach? Ensure they wear UV protective swimwear and clothing. We have several options for you.

76 | Anything but Ordinary • December January February 2013/14

Teaching your child about sun safety will stay with them for life. Fun at the beach for the day doesn’t have to mean sunburn!

Every now and then a new product comes along and changes your life. The new Sombrilla by Hollie & Harrie will be one of those products for Australian families this summer. If you and your kids love the beach or the park, but find yourself running for shade during the hottest part of the day, the Sombrilla is the answer! The elegant designs are bright and sophisticated and the Sombrilla is made from 100% cotton so families can breathe and relax underneath while still enjoying superior sun protection. The Sombrilla is also easy to put up—even a three-year-old can help you! Plus it’s big enough to fit a family of four or more under its protective shade. The Sombrilla will allow your kids to do all the things they love—from making sandcastles at the beach to eating a picnic lunch at the park—with 95% protection from harsh UV rays (tested by ARPANSA).

On average, a school bag is carried around for 30-60 minutes per day, so over the 13 years our children are at school, the effects can be devastating on their developing spines! A study conducted in 2011 demonstrated the alarming increase in back pain experienced by our kids:

• T he weight of the backpack should not exceed 10-15% of the child’s body weight. Pack heavy items close to the spine in the centre of the backpack and lighter items at the front of the bag. Teach your child to pack light and only carry what is necessary or utilise a locker at school. Also consider carrying some things separately if the bag is particularly heavy one day (e.g. lunch box or large books!).

hirty-three per cent of nine-year-olds reported • T an experience of back pain.

he shoulder straps should be padded, • T adjustable and at least 5 cm wide. The straps should sit snugly on the child’s shoulders and be tightened so the bag sits close to the body. Emphasize to your child that BOTH straps need to be worn at all times! Also encourage your child to readjust the straps every time they put it on to suit the load being carried.

• T wenty-eight per cent of 13-year-olds reported an experience of back pain. orty-eight per cent of 15-year-olds reported an • F experience of back pain. With these stats, it is vital to have a correctly fitting schoolbag! Here are some tips for selecting and fitting a schoolbag for your kids.

• C hoose a bag that also has a waist belt as this helps draw the bag closer to the body and prevent strain.

hoose a bag that is appropriate for your child’s • C size. As a general guide, the bag should not be wider than back width (from armpit to armpit) and should not exceed back height (top of shoulder blade to belly button plus 5 cm).

Tell your child never to ignore pain in the back or shoulders as it could lead to injury. If your child is experiencing back pain consider taking them to a paediatric chiropractor for an assessment and advice on optimal spinal development.

positive talk with Sally-Anne Blanshard

Director and Coach

Super Mum

Once upon a time I used to work full-time. I worked long hours and often burnt the candle at both ends. There were days that felt so long the only way to get over them was to make the night even longer and go to the pub! ‘Backing it up’ on a Friday with a hazy hangover, doubleshot cap’ in hand recalling the songs from karaoke the night before … I enjoyed my pay packet each month on an equal distribution of clothes (not another pair of jeans?) and weekends away with my beau escaping the hectic lives we had created for ourselves.

less sleep, yet still manage to exceed my work commitments. I can put on four loads of washing, catch up with my team in an online meeting and give 110% to my work during my kid’s one-hour nap with military precision. I can prepare an evening meal (‘It just needs heating up love’), I can bathe a baby, sing a few songs (making up the words) and deal with a few tears all before 7 pm.

Now I work part-time. I have never worked so hard in my life! As a mum I am now a fully qualified task-mistress.

Mondays used to come round some quickly … Well, now with a jam-packed weekend it takes a while … early starts and early nights. A lot more thought goes into what we, as a family, are doing, from a logistics point of view as much as anything else! Life seems so much more full for us. It is exhausting yet exhilarating.

I still have big nights out (of bed) I run on

And SUPER.

Oh, those were the days.

Natrice takes the

plunge!

On 3 December 2013, Brisbane mum Natrice Grosvenor will be one of over 60 mums around Australia taking the plunge to raise funds for charity, Support for Mums. Now in its second year, MotherJumpers is the brainchild of Alli Price, founder of Motivating Mum and mum of two. ‘Mums today wear so many hats; from cleaner to chauffeur to nurse to entrepreneur, and everything in between. ‘MotherJumpers is a chance for Mums to do something crazy with a great excuse—raising money for other mums, for when crisis strikes.’ In its launch year, MotherJumpers saw 34 mums around Australia jump out of planes and raise over $35 000 for Support for Mums, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing mums and their families with practical, short-term support and assistance in circumstantial crisis such as perinatal depression, an unwell child or the loss of a partner.’ Jumping at Bribie Island in front of family and friends, the mother of two children and owner of local business, Marli and Mo, aims to raise $1000 that will go towards supporting women when they need it most. ‘I am jumping because I know firsthand what it’s like to go through postnatal depression; luckily I had the support, some women don’t,’ said Grosvenor. ‘With this jump also raising money for Support for Mums, I couldn’t say no to taking the plunge.’ The local community is encouraged to support Natrice and can do so by searching for MotherJumpers at www.mycause.com.au
