o the casual – beach casual, that is – observer, driftwood is but one of the natural oddities among a collection of wave-beaten, sun-bleached wonders that dwarf countless seashells and coral strewn across any given shore. But Ryan DeCoteau sees more in the plant material we dismiss as the perfect fuel for roasting breadfruit or fish. The fact that he’s an artist may explain further. Ryan sees raw material for some of the most unique pieces of décor, in the shape of animals and yes, Christmas trees! To explain more would be to rob readers of the opportunity to find out how this became a profitable venture. Writer Andrea sits with the master craftsman for your benefit. Also, read along as Akil Franklyn examines what makes the Caribbean a no-brainer as the best place to be at Christmas. Add his trove of nostalgic, festive tidbits for an entertaining yet informative look at how we celebrate the season. This issue is also all about preparing your home for Yuletide. And, as spreading marl is no longer a thing, Dominique Toppin shares how to give your house curb appeal using flowering plants and adding the right splash of colour to get the look and feel you want. It doesn’t stop there, though. What’s Christmas without gifts? Good gifts…great gifts?! Answer: Nothing for a gift expert to boast about. Thankfully our in-house guru has it all wrapped up. Follow Akil’s advice this year for the best results…wide eyes and beaming smiles. Just like sunset at 5:30 p.m. and holiday favourites on The Beat 104.1 FM, Smart Homes encourages you to get an early start as well and go beyond new curtains and bathmats. Make that change! We know that going all out for the season comes with a price, but happiness is priceless. Nick Nunes also gives you advice to help you not break the bank. HOSTING AT HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS by Akil Franklyn
There’s a particular allure to the warmth and cosiness of indoor gatherings.
I
n the story of our lives, some moments stand out brighter than most; those are the moments usually spent with friends and family. Whether it’s the laughter echoing through your living room during a cosy dinner party or the shared stories under a starlit sky in your backyard, these are the memories that last a lifetime. The act of entertaining guests, both inside and outside the confines of our homes, is an art form in itself—one that transforms mere gatherings into unforgettable experiences. In a world that often races past us, where virtual connections threaten to overshadow real ones, the significance of face-to-face interactions, laughter, and genuine human connection cannot be overstated. Hosting guests is not merely about offering a meal or a place to rest, it’s about nurturing relationships, forging bonds, and creating moments that linger in the hearts of both hosts and guests long after the last dish is cleared. It’s an art that transcends the ordinary and elevates everyday moments into extraordinary memories. There’s a particular allure to the warmth and cosiness of indoor gatherings, especially during the Christmas season. The art of
indoor entertaining during this festive season is a symphony of sights, sounds, and sensations—a true celebration of togetherness. The heart of successful indoor entertaining lies in creating a welcoming atmosphere that envelops your guests like a familiar embrace. It begins with lighting—the soft glow of twinkling fairy lights, the warm embrace of candlelight, or the shimmer of ornaments on a beautifully adorned tree. These elements cast a magical spell, instantly setting the mood for a memorable gathering. Decor, too, plays a pivotal role in shaping the ambience. Adorn your space with festive trimmings that reflect the spirit of the season—elegant ornaments, garlands of evergreen, and perhaps even a centrepiece that captures the essence of Christmas. The art lies in balancing the decorations to create a visually stunning yet uncluttered environment where conversations can flow naturally. The ambience is a symphony of elements that transcends the visual. It’s the laughter of loved ones, the anticipation of gift exchanges, and the shared stories that weave the tapestry of the evening. Soft background music adds another layer to this symphony, enhancing the emotional depth of
the gathering. Choose a playlist that evokes the holiday spirit, with timeless classics or contemporary renditions of beloved carols. Yet, the ambience extends beyond the auditory to the olfactory realm. Scent is a powerful memory trigger, and during the Christmas season, it’s the aroma of freshly baked ham, the spicy notes of sorrel drink, or the crispness of a pine-scented candle that lingers in the air. Infuse your space with these delightful fragrances to transport your guests to a Christmas wonderland of sensory delights. The art of indoor entertaining during the Christmas season is all about creating a space where cherished traditions and meaningful connections can flourish. It’s about the joy of sharing, the warmth of laughter, and the wonder of the season. Especially on rainy days, your home becomes a haven of holiday magic, where the true spirit of Christmas comes alive. Outside of your house offers a canvas rich in natural beauty for your gatherings. Hosting alfresco adventures in your own backyard or garden brings a world of joy and possibilities. Firstly, there’s the enchantment of embracing nature’s canvas. Whether it’s the lush greenery of your garden or the serene

and weather-resistant fabrics can transform even a basic setup into an oasis of comfort. As the sun sets, lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood. String lights suspended overhead, lanterns on tabletops, and strategically placed torches provide illumination and add a touch of enchantment to the evening. For gatherings in the heat of the day, providing shade becomes paramount. Umbrellas, pergolas, and retractable awnings offer respite from the sun’s rays, creating a cool and inviting retreat. This ensures your guests stay comfortable even on the hottest summer days. No outdoor gathering is complete without the sizzle of a barbecue.
The allure of grilled delights, from smoky ribs to marinated vegetables, adds a flavourful dimension to outdoor adventures. A barbecue station also serves as a focal point, drawing guests together as they watch and savour the delicious creations. In the glow of twinkling lights, the sound of laughter, and the scent of festive delights, the heartwarming art of indoor and outdoor entertaining during this magical Christmas season is one of the core memories that will last the rest of our lives. Our homes, adorned with the spirit of the holidays, become havens of warmth and togetherness, where cherished memories are crafted.

way of celebrating the holiday, there is no doubt that Christmas is a special time of celebration throughout the Caribbean. Christmas is considered the most wonderful time of the year, but before avid celebrators enjoy the festivities, one of the first steps that never gets overlooked for many Caribbean households is the meticulous clean-up, which is sometimes
eagerly anticipated. A thorough cleaning of the home before the holidays can make a world of difference in creating a welcoming and stress-free environment for you, your family and any guests. It is an opportunity to declutter physical spaces and spruce up areas, making room for new possibilities. For Caribbean households, the home
The pre-Christmas clean-up is a vital step on the calendar of the Christmas season. tradition for a Christmas clean-up usually follows a similar format. From decluttering, deep cleaning and painting to replacing appliances and furniture and purchasing holiday décor. In this article, we will delve into some of the most common traditions of the preChristmas cleanup, providing you with some of the best tips for tackling the task in time for the festive celebrations. One of the first steps on the list, and while this is sometimes skipped, is creating a checklist. This allows you to easily identify and divide tasks into categories such as kitchen, living room, bathrooms, bedrooms and even the exterior. This plan usually makes the process more manageable and leads to greater success. Normally, the exterior of the house has the most space and requires the most work; as such, it is key that these outdoor spaces are not neglected. Around Christmas time, it is not unusual to see families, children included, outside cleaning windows, removing debris, repainting walls and preparing for outdoor 12

decorations such as lights and wreaths to enhance the curb appeal. Since the living room area is one of the main hubs for entertainment in the home, this is another key space for major clean-up, especially around the Christmas period. Typically, traditions, especially in the Caribbean, include removing all curtains, shifting furniture, sweeping, vacuuming and mopping. After a deep clean, general tidying up continues up until the last lap and the final production on Christmas day. The kitchen is usually the centre of the action at Christmas, but it must be clean before the food preparations. This includes removing groceries and other items such as utensils from cupboards and drawers to clean these spaces and make room for the variety of new products to be added for the festive feast. Up next is the bathroom refresh. From scrubbing and sanitising to replacing old shower curtains and bathmats, homeowners know the value and comfort of having a clean bathroom for themselves and their
guests. With a fresh and inviting look for the festive season, the overall mood is enhanced, making the holidays even more enjoyable and memorable. Of course, the bedrooms of the home cannot be forgotten. That space which is considered a home inside the home is usually the space of peace and comfort. As such, it is important that at Christmas time, the vibes of the season are felt even when you are at rest. When cleaning the bedroom there are some important things to remember such as removing old items placed in storage, sweeping and mopping. Changing the curtains and bedsheets on Christmas Eve is also a major tradition, especially in the Caribbean. The pre-Christmas clean-up is a vital step on the calendar of the Christmas season. It sets the stage for a joyful and stress-free celebration, creates an atmosphere for guests and also promotes health and safety. So roll up your sleeves, follow these tips and embark on these traditions to make your home sparkle this season.

SETTING THE SCENE by Akil Franklyn
From selecting the perfect table to creating a captivating centrepiece. In the world of interior design and home decor, tables and centrepieces serve as more than just functional furniture; they are the canvas upon which we paint our living spaces with style and personality. As we gather around dining tables for memorable feasts, sip coffee around cosy coffee tables, or work diligently at our desks, the tables themselves become storytellers. Centrepieces, those carefully curated accents that grace our tables, add the finishing flourish to these stories. From selecting the perfect table to creating a captivating and breathtaking centrepiece, the delightful world of tables and centrepieces is filled with things to discover. It’s important to acknowledge the wide array of table types available. Dining tables, often the heart of family gatherings, come in various shapes – round, rectangular, or even extendable – to cater to your dining needs. Coffee tables, positioned at the centre of your living room, come in diverse styles, from minimalist glass designs to rustic wooden ones. Side tables, those versatile accents, offer a place to rest your essentials within arm’s reach. When choosing a table, several factors come into play. Consider the size of your room; a table should fit comfortably within the space without overwhelming it. Think about the number of people you intend to accommodate or the activities you’ll engage in around the table. Durability is key, so examine the materials closely. Solid wood lends warmth, while metal imparts an industrial edge. Your lifestyle should also be considered: do you prefer low-maintenance options, or are you willing to invest in delicate designs? Matching the table to your room’s style is an art in itself. For a cosy, 14
October 2023
traditional atmosphere, opt for wooden tables with classic detailing. Modern spaces thrive on clean lines and glass or metal surfaces. If you’re aiming for an eclectic look, don’t hesitate to mix and match styles for a unique, personalised touch. Ultimately, the perfect table harmonises with your room’s look while serving its practical purpose. For the creative souls, DIY centrepieces offer endless possibilities. Consider crafting a seasonal centrepiece using fresh blooms from your garden or incorporating natural elements like driftwood and seashells for a coastal vibe. Alternatively, showcase your artistic side by arranging a collection of vintage books, ceramics, or antique treasures as a centrepiece. If you prefer ready-made solutions, the market is brimming with options, from elegant crystal vases to minimalist geometric sculptures. In the vibrant Caribbean, the beauty of seasonal decor extends far beyond traditional holidays. While holidays like Thanksgiving and Halloween may not be central to this region, there’s an abundance of inspiration drawn from the natural rhythms and celebrations unique to the Caribbean. Let’s set our sights on the most magical time of the year: Christmas in the Caribbean. Picture your table adorned with the colours of a Caribbean sunset – hues of coral, turquoise, and golden sands. Seashell garlands and twinkling lights create an enchanting atmosphere. Tropical foliage, like palm fronds and hibiscus blooms, take centre stage alongside locally crafted ornaments that celebrate the spirit of the islands. But the Caribbean’s seasonal charm doesn’t stop at Christmas. Embrace the essence of Carnival season with bold, vibrant colour palettes, feathered accents, and masks adorning your table. As spring arrives, consider a floral explosion with bougainvillaea and hibiscus centrepieces in shades of fuchsia and coral. And in the sultry summer, evoke the essence of a Caribbean beach party with turquoise blues, sandy neutrals, and seashell decor. By celebrating the Caribbean’s unique seasonal rhythms, you can transform your table and centrepieces into a captivating reflection of this beautiful region. Selecting the right tableware and linens is comparable to choosing the perfect accessories for your outfit, it’s about enhancing the overall look. When it comes to dishes, consider the occasion and your personal style. Elegant porcelain or bone china sets can elevate a formal dinner, while colourful stoneware or tropical-themed dishes may be perfect for casual gatherings. The choice of cutlery should match the formality of your table setting. Equally important are tablecloths and linens. These play a significant role in setting the mood. Crisp white tablecloths exude timeless elegance, while vibrant, patterned linens can infuse a burst of Caribbean zest. Don’t hesitate to mix and match colours and textures for a dynamic effect. If you’re showcasing a beautiful wooden table, consider a table runner that allows the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. Ultimately, the key lies in balancing practicality with aesthetics. Choose tableware and linens that harmonise with the overall theme and ambience you wish to create. The right selection can transform your table into a canvas of artistry. Striking the balance between functionality and aesthetics is all about finding the sweet spot of harmony. While aesthetics is undoubtedly paramount, it’s crucial not to sacrifice the practicality and usability of your table. Consider the height of your centrepiece, it should enhance conversation, not obstruct it. Ensure there’s ample space for dishes, glassware, and elbow room. Go for tableware that not only looks fantastic but is also easy to handle and clean. Table linens, while adding visual flair, should also be conveniently machine washable. By finding this delicate balance, you’ll create a table that seamlessly marries form and function, where both the visual feast and the culinary delights take centre stage without one overshadowing the other. Your beautifully decorated table becomes a stage where everyday moments and special occasions can unfold effortlessly.

CHRISTMAS WISH LIST GRANTED by Nick Nunes
Ever since the financial crash of 2007/8, the world has been in turmoil, financially.
W
e’re already at that special time of year. Christmas is always just around the corner, even when you least expect it. This is especially true when your Christmas giftgiving goals are a bit over budget. Ever since the financial crash of 2007/8, the world has been in turmoil, financially. For many, the economic crisis hasn’t ended and, for most of the generation now entering or having already joined the market in the past decade or two, financial woes are a simple fact of life. Many of Gen X and the Millennial Generation are bogged down by ridiculous inflation and stagnant wages. Figuring out how to navigate the world economy in crisis after crisis brings anxiety and a feeling of living in a perpetual spiral. The best way to escape this feeling, especially at Christmas time, is through prudent money management. Regardless of your financial situation, the number one way to find some semblance of peace in this hectic and uncertain world is through the elimination of debt.

Every finance guru will tell you that the interest fees on debt are one of the biggest mood killers and thieves of future financial security. Crawling out of credit card or loan debt can be very difficult, but it can be done. Making a plan, forming a budget, and sticking to it are the best ways to wiggle your way free from financial burden and to free up the potential earnings of the future— and thus your potential for affording little or big luxuries. Once you’re able to get your relative debt under control and put a bit away in savings, your credit may increase. Being able to pay off your debt goes a long way in the eyes of lenders and the financial system. When it comes to financing purchases smaller than vehicles and houses, some institutions can offer interest rates as low as two per cent, whereas others may gouge up to 15. It’s important to shop around for loans before just going with the flow of whatever offer happens to be on hand. It is also very important to know what burdens you can financially undertake without breaking the bank, so to speak. Banks, credit unions, and loan companies abound in the modern world. The best
Say you wish to purchase a $4,000 computer for a special someone, or yourself, and you don’t have an extra four grand you’re willing to just drop immediately, a simple hire purchase cost calculator will tell you that a two per cent 24-month loan will mean a principal amount per month of $166.67. The interest each month will be $6.67. Thus, the total each month owed to the lender will be $173.33. Adding all of that up means that the lifetime cost of your $4,000 computer winds up being in the vicinity of $4,160—not bad at all. The interest rates of hire purchasers should be your deciding factor in taking this route. If you jump that interest rate up to six per cent over the same 24-month period, suddenly the interest you’re paying goes from $160 to $480. If we keep the six per cent rate and jump up to 36 months, now you’re paying $720 in interest for that same $4,000 •computer. The lower the interest rate and the shorter the repayment period, the lower the amount you end up paying. Take care in determining which lenders will be right for you, always ask questions, and seek advice from those you trust to explain anything you don’t understand. Any hire purchase agreement must be made through authorised bodies. The ability to offer hire purchase usually requires an institution to be approved through the Central Bank or other authority.
places to borrow are from places that you know and that know you. Some lenders will offer 100 per cent financing, which can seem like a gift on a white horse that you don’t want to look in the mouth. However, these types of loans often arrive as Trojans bearing big interest rates and sometimes balloon payments at the end of the financing period. Likewise, credit unions are a great boon to many, especially in Barbados, but their interest rates, especially for smaller-sized loans, can overpower the actual prioritisation of purchases. Another option can be buying through hire purchase. Not all retailers offer hire purchasing plans. However, due to the small nature of hire purchase products, the interest rates can be quite low, though the payoff period can take way longer than you would really like. Some places will offer interest rates of a meagre two per cent but require the loan to be paid off over a two-year period. One of the most beautiful aspects of the 21st century is the availability of information. Those who aren’t money-minded can find any number of budgeting apps and financing calculators online to help guide them into their future purchases. Hire purchase may be the best chance to attain expensive gifts without putting yourself under duress. However, committing to years of payments may seem ridiculous for a gift. How will you feel in 2025 when you still haven’t fully paid off the fancy computer you gifted to a loved one? The good thing about most hire purchase offers is that you can pay off the loan early—this is the best advice as it cuts down on the interest that you’re paying over the lifetime of the loan.

Here are a few pieces of information to make sure you see on any hire purchase agreement you’re considering signing: • The item covered under the agreement, for example, a car or computer. The cash price of the item. • The hire purchase price. This is the total amount you will pay over the life of the loan. The hire purchase price is the monthly payment or instalment multiplied by the number of instalments which you have to make. • The amount of each instalment you have to pay. Sometimes the final instalment is much larger than all the others (a balloon payment). • The date you must pay each instalment. • The names and addresses of all the parties to the agreement. • A statement that you have the right to withdraw from the agreement within 10 days of receiving a copy of the agreement. This is known as a cooling-off period. Often you are asked to give away this right by signing a waiver. You do not have to sign this waiver. • A statement that you must tell the owner (finance company) of the locations of the item. • The words “Hire Purchase Agreement” must be stated clearly and in a prominent place on the agreement form. • The fees, charges, and penalties that apply. • The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) charged

Kitchen - Air Fryer A quote attributed to celebrity chef Paul Prudhomme says: “You don’t need a silver fork to eat good food.” For their reasonably affordable price, an air fryer can make a novice in the kitchen feel like a professional chef every lunchtime. The ease with which recipes are completed and the speed they are finished make this appliance a fantastic gift for someone who loves the art of cooking, but for whatever reason time has become an enemy. An air fryer offers several benefits. Firstly, it cooks food with significantly less oil, reducing overall calorie and fat intake while still producing crispy, delicious results. It’s also a timesaver, as it preheats quickly and cooks food faster than traditional methods. The compact size and versatility of an air fryer make it suitable for a variety of recipes, from fries to chicken wings. Additionally, it’s easy to clean and emits less heat than an oven, making it ideal for hot summer days. Overall, an air fryer promotes healthier cooking, convenience, and versatility in the kitchen. Perfect for someone who practices or wants to begin eating healthier. With numerous videos online with recipes to try, this will ensure that the receiver of this gift cooks like a champ.

Bedroom - Air Humidifier/Fan There is no escaping from it – the days (and nights) are getting hotter. Spending a day in your home sometimes has become uncomfortable due to increasing temperatures. The ones not blessed with air conditioning have been left to depend on their fans for reprieve from the heat, but that comes with its own challenges. The continuous circulation of the air in the room not only eventually gets hot but it also gets dusty, which reduces air quality. A humidifier and fan combo solves this problem. It helps maintain optimal indoor humidity levels, which is crucial for respiratory health, preventing dry skin, and reducing allergens. By simultaneously acting as a fan, it circulates the moistened air, ensuring an even distribution of humidity throughout the room. This can alleviate discomfort caused by dry air, such as sore throats and congestion, especially in winter or dry climates. The fan function also provides cooling relief on hot days. Combining these features into one device saves space and can be a cost-effective way to keep your bedroom, or any other room, cool on hot summer days and nights.
High definition camera House Exterior - Security Cameras The gift of “peace of mind” is generally a symbolic concept; however, a tangible gift of security would be welcomed by all homeowners. In bygone years, the task of watching your house was left to a neighbour with a bit too much spare time on their hands; however, these days camera systems can be viewed on your mobile device remotely. High-definition cameras offer clear footage of your house and many models offer motion detection alerts, enabling immediate response to suspicious activity. While some brands of these cameras may require professional installation, they are options that the set-up can also double as a great DIY project.
Living Area - Sound Bar There is nothing like a Saturday evening on the couch in front of the television, watching a movie. Entertainment evenings matter, and a good sound system accentuates this experience. Usually, people would spring for a full surround sound system, but costs and complexity are factors to consider. A sound bar would make a wonderful gift to someone moving into a small apartment or in a room where space is a challenge. A soundbar offers numerous benefits for enhancing your audio experience. They significantly improve the sound quality of your television speakers, not as much as a full surround sound system, but
still an improvement. Soundbars are designed for simplicity, offering easy setup and minimal clutter. They are compact, making them suitable for smaller spaces where a full surround sound system might not be practical. Many soundbars come with advanced audio technologies like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, providing three-dimensional sound that adds depth and dimension to your content. They also often include wireless connectivity options like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, allowing you to stream music from your devices effortlessly. Soundbars are typically more affordable than full surround sound setups, making them a cost-effective gift without breaking the bank.

FENCING YOUR FORTRESS by Akil Franklyn
I
magine returning home after a long day’s work, the serene sanctuary you’ve built for your family, only to find it violated and vulnerable. Your sense of security would be shattered. In an era where peace of mind is priceless, the importance of fencing and perimeter security cannot be overstated. Beyond mere curb appeal, these protective barriers are the guardians of your home, protecting against potential intruders. In the world of fencing, aesthetics meets security, and every homeowner can fortify their piece of heaven. Before embarking on your project, it’s
22

crucial to start with the right foot forward by addressing legal requirements. Local regulations may stipulate the height, style, and placement of fences, and permits might be necessary. Consulting with your local authorities or a professional in the field can help you navigate these requirements seamlessly, ensuring that your new fence aligns with the established guidelines and safeguards your property legally. When considering the type of fence, chain-link, wrought iron or wooden fences offer homeowners an array of choices when it comes to fortifying their properties.
Chain-link fences, while less imposing in appearance, offer cost-effective security with visibility – they can act as a deterrent while allowing you to keep an eye on your surroundings. Wrought iron fences exude timeless elegance and strength, making a statement about the pride you take in your home. Their ornate designs can elevate the aesthetic appeal while still serving as a formidable barrier. Wooden fences, on the other hand, provide a rustic charm that melds with the natural beauty of your landscape. Their solid construction offers privacy and security, ensuring your personal space
remains truly private. These are just a few examples of the many fencing options available, each with its unique blend of aesthetics and security, tailored to your preferences and needs. In the pursuit of an impenetrable fortress around your home, a good fence is nothing without a gate of similar quality. Gates play a pivotal role in bolstering your perimeter security. They serve as the first line of defence, offering both access control and aesthetic appeal. A sturdy, automated gate can deter potential intruders while
seamlessly blending with your fence’s style. Now that the type of fence is decided on and property borders have been mapped out, here comes the big question: Do you do it yourself or do you hire a professional? DIY, while often more budget-friendly, demands time, effort, and skill. It’s an excellent choice for those with a knack for construction and a willingness to learn. However, it can result in mistakes, leading to security vulnerabilities and potential rework. On the other hand, opting for professional installation guarantees expertise and precision. It saves you time and delivers peace of mind, but it can be more expensive. Ultimately, the choice depends on your skills, available time, and the importance of getting the job done right from the outset. Regular maintenance of your fence will be a major part of your journey as a homeowner. Fence maintenance isn’t just about appearances; it’s a cornerstone of long-standing security. Neglected fences can develop weaknesses, compromising their protective role. Regular inspections, cleaning, and repairs are essential to ensure your fence remains a reliable barrier. Wooden fences need periodic staining or sealing to combat rot and pests, while wrought iron may require rust-prevention measures. A well-maintained fence not only preserves its structural integrity but also enhances its lifespan, keeping your property secure and visually appealing. Investing in the care and upkeep of your fence is an investment in the security and beauty of your home. In the realm of home security, your choice of fencing is a decision that transcends aesthetics. It’s the promise of protection, privacy, and peace of mind. Choosing the right fence isn’t just a home improvement; it’s a declaration that your sanctuary is a fortress, safeguarding what you hold most dear.

Ryan favours using pieces in their raw states, which showcases the grains and patterns, knots and weathered appearance only nature can provide. As each piece of driftwood is distinct, so is each of Ryan’s creations unique, even if they carry the same basic shape. The imperfections and irregularities in the wood add character to his creations. The pandemic of 2020 caused Ryan to pivot in a way that ultimately became successful. He established his company Get My Drift 246 after his friend who owned a driftwood company called Chattel Wood Barbados closed her company “After discussing what she used to do with the driftwood and the returns from it, I decided to try a hand at it,” he told Smart Homes. “On my first try, she laughed so hard at the sticks I brought back and asked me what I was going to make with those sticks. Being laughed at put me in a totally different gear to show her and make her eat her words. I created my first sea horse then, and she showed me how to make the driftwood trees and then I started to create my own style. This was

in March 2020 and by October 2020, I had my production line of trees and I also was selling driftwood art of animals that I made like sailfish and other types of sea horses,” Ryan shared. His impetus to create stems from his own personal ethos. “It’s inspired by what I wanted for my own house, and knowing that I can make it myself holds more personal sentimental value as well,” he affords, adding that he also makes other functional yet decorative items like mirrors, animals, coffee tables, hat rack and coat racks. His business is quite timely and important, too, as it aligns with eco-friendly and sustainable principles because it involves repurposing and upcycling materials that would otherwise create rubbish on the beach. Though he is not formally trained in art (did it only up to fourth form at Coleridge and Parry School), Ryan deftly uses the range of textures and shapes in his three-dimensional work. The smooth weathered surfaces coupled with the jagged or rough edges add depth and dimension to his creations. “With the driftwood, I threw myself into the online illustrations and information, so
I’m basically self-taught and bought all my tools. I taught myself how to do everything. The cuts and bruises I got showed me how not to do things and gave me the discipline and some vision of how to keep improving the work,” he reminisced, recalling that his first completed piece was a seahorse, which he did with small pieces of wood. He did it on a canvas and framed the canvas with driftwood. “Something like that I could never sell as I have a sentimental emotional attachment to those creations. It’s on the wall facing my bed and so every time I get up, I can see it for inspiration,” he declared. Creating driftwood art can be a labourintensive process. Artists must carefully select and arrange pieces of driftwood, considering their size, shape, and colour. This process can involve cleaning, treating, and sealing the wood to preserve its integrity. Ryan selects and arranges the pieces of driftwood, considering their size, shape and colour. He has to clean, treat and seal the wood to preserve its integrity. He puts a lot of attention to details and takes his time to find the right piece to give that “wow” factor that makes his clients happy. It’s hard to tell
what is some of his best work as each piece is unique in its own way. His mirrors stand out, however. “My clients appreciate the work I do,” Ryan stated, sharing an experience he had with Grenadian artist Susan Mains for whom this year he did a remarkable 5x8-foot frame for a painting she did. “When I was commissioned to do the piece, I googled her and saw the extent of her career and her work. When I got the opportunity, I reached out to her to let her be involved in the journey of making the frame. I didn’t expect to get a response, but she reached out to me right away and she told me she hadn’t seen that painting in about 26 years when she shipped it to Barbados. It gave me a good feeling involving her like that in the process. And she and I are each other’s fans now,” he said proudly. Driftwood art is a captivating and environmentally conscious way to incorporate the beauty of nature into artistic creations. It has already withstood the forces of nature and is quite durable. When properly treated and maintained, it can endure beauty in both indoor and outdoor environments. It makes excellent gifts too!

String colourful Christmas lights along your porch, railing, and trees, casting a warm, inviting glow reminiscent of the Caribbean sunset. Enhance your curb appeal with potted tropical plants, like hibiscus or bougainvillea, for a burst of colour. If you are lucky enough to have trees such as the Snow-on-theMountain around your home, around this time of year the flowers would be in bloom and would give your surroundings an old-fashioned, Christmas feeling. Consider adorning your windows with whimsical Caribbean-style shutters and vibrant, handpainted wooden signs showcasing holiday greetings. Pineapple Centerpiece: Hollow out a pineapple and fill it with fresh tropical flowers for a striking and fragrant centrepiece. These DIY projects offer a creative outlet for adding a touch of the Caribbean to your Christmas decorations, with each piece
infused with your personal touch. A Christmas Day in the Caribbean is incomplete without a feast of delectable delights that blend tradition with a dash of modern flair. Kickstart your holiday gathering with classics like a glazed back ham, marinated in a spicy and aromatic blend of herbs and spices, then slow-cooked to perfection. Pair it with “rice and peas”, where creamy coconut-infused rice mingles with kidney beans and a side of jug-jug, a side dish made of pigeon peas or lentils, bacon or pork, hot peppers, beef, onions, chives, corn flour, and butter. For dessert, indulge in “black cake”, a rich fruitcake soaked in rum for weeks, offering an abundance of flavours. To wash it all down, serve up rum punch, a zesty concoction of dark and light rum, tropical fruit juices, and a sprinkle of nutmeg, or for the non-alcoholics, sorrel, a spiced floral drink. These recipes will transport your guests to a Caribbean culinary paradise. As we conclude our Caribbean Christmas journey, remember that it’s not just about decor, but the heartfelt connections it fosters. This season, savour the joy of family, friends, and the tropical allure you’ve embraced. Whether under the snow or sun, let the spirit of the Caribbean infuse every moment with warmth and cheer.

POTTED PLANTS MAKE YOUR HOME by Dominique Toppin
A well-manicured landscape including potted plants, boosts the home’s overall aesthetic and can even add a touch of luxury.
T
he concept of curb appeal, or the visual attractiveness of your home to onlookers, is essential for making a positive first impression. While many factors can contribute to this appeal, one of the most effective and traditional ways is through the use of plants. Of the many wonders of plants, perhaps the most wonderful is that they are so varied, beautiful, and magical when enhancing curb appeal around the home. Therefore, when well placed and thoughtfully chosen, plants can transform the exterior of your home, adding charm, colour and a welcoming atmosphere. Plants are powerful, especially when it comes to visual harmony. When well taken care of and in full bloom, plants tend to soften the harsh lines of buildings and ultimately create a balanced landscape. With such harmony surrounding the home, blending into the setting of the building, plants can make a house more inviting and add a renewed sense of value to the area. When talking about visual harmony, the vibrant colours as the seasons change throughout the year can provide a new and appealing look to add a new level of beauty
to the landscape. From flowering shrubs and perennials to trees, plants can go a long way into providing wonder with a spectrum of hues, ensuring a fresh look each time. While plants with their visual appeal can usually make a home’s surroundings look great, it is also important to place plants in an area that highlights the architectural features of the home, such as windows, doors or a patio. This carefully thought-out plan for accentuation goes a long way towards creating a natural, lush frame for the property by directing attention to exactly where you want it. A well-manicured landscape including potted plants, boosts the home’s overall aesthetic and can even add a touch of luxury. This is why many homeowners hope to have a green thumb to ensure that the appearance of their home is polished, luxurious, and stands out. While plants can create a new sense of beauty around the home, there is a measure of importance in choosing the right plants for your landscape. See below a list of the best plant types according to landscapers to enhance your curb appeal: Flowering shrubs such as hydrangeas,
azaleas and lilacs are versatile, offer large colourful blooms and can create stunning border focal points. Perennials such as daylilies, hostas and coneflowers are also great options for boosting curb appeal. They come in a wide range of colours and textures which usually bloom throughout the summer period, adding a burst of colour to the landscape. Since most perennials are drought and heat-tolerant, they can be low maintenance yet still fill the area with beauty. While vines are not typically seen on many homes in Barbados, climbing vines with flowering buds are known to add a touch of romance and elegance to the landscape of the home. Since they can be so versatile, they can also be used to cover fences for a nice touch of appeal. With these plant-type suggestions providing such a range of options to suit various climates and design preferences, it is easy to choose based on your individual preferences. By carefully selecting and arranging them, you can transform your home and bring beauty, colour and character to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.

THE ART OF PAINTING by Dominique Toppin
home. Painters usually recommend muted green tones for walls. • White – White usually evokes the magic of the season and can be easily blended with any holiday colour scheme and additional décor. It is a timeless choice for concrete or board buildings, creating a clean and elegant backdrop for festive decorations. • Blue – According to professional painters, pale blue shades can evoke a sense of a wonderland and usually pairs well with white accents. As such, your preferred shade of blue can be used as a calming backdrop for the holidays. Now that we have explored some of the power of a fresh repaint and some of the most traditional yet beautiful holiday colours, we can focus on some the basic tips for painting a home. • Step 1 – The initial step of a successful paint job is proper preparation. This includes cleaning surfaces, patching any dents or holes and sanding surfaces for a smooth finish. • Step 2 – Choosing the right paint is also another key factor. Different finishes such as trowel plastic serve different purposes and provides a unique look. Make sure you test the paint and the colours before committing. • Step 3 – Before starting a paint job, it is important to cover floors and furniture with cloths which are no longer in use to prevent splatters and spills.
N
ormally, when we look at the exterior of a house the first thing that typically stands out is the paint job. From the colour, the flat paint or trowel plastic texture to the design there is no denying that painting is a fundamental element of exterior and interior home appeal. As we enter the holiday season persons are looking to refresh the look of their home and the team at Smart Homes found it necessary to delve into the art of painting a home. Since colours evoke emotion, the colour you choose plays a crucial role in whether you want a calming retreat, an energetic space or a simple yet cozy atmosphere. In addition to visual appeal, it is often said that your home is a reflection of you and your personal style and taste. Therefore, the colours and textures used can provide a sense of unique identity.
• Step 4 – Prime when necessary. This step usually allows for paint to adhere better and can prevent stains from bleeding through the final colour. Primer is usually a white paint and is typically used when painting over dark colours.
Some of the favourites for the season include but are not limited to:
• Step 5 – If you are doing the painting yourself, it is important that the right sequence is followed. Professional tipsters advised starting from the top and working your way down with the paintbrush. This prevents drips from falling onto freshly painted areas.
• Green – Shades of green, which are some of the main Christmas colours tend to bring a natural, soothing element to your
• Step 6 – When the hard work of the paint job is over, it is important to remain patient and allow for proper drying time.
UNDERFOOT ELEGANCE by Akil Franklyn

iling is a fundamental aspect of interior and exterior design, significantly influencing the aesthetics and functionality of spaces. Whether indoors or outdoors, the choice of tiles plays a crucial role in defining the character of a room or outdoor area. From adding warmth and elegance to withstanding the elements, the world of tiling is vast and diverse. We’ll explore the realm of tiling, delving into the options for indoor and outdoor spaces, with a particular focus on how it transforms bathrooms and showers. Indoor tiling is a cornerstone of interior design, serving as both a canvas for artistic expression and a functional element that
36
October 2023
enhances the usability of spaces. The choice of indoor tiles can significantly impact the aesthetics of a room. For instance, ceramic tiles are a popular choice for their durability and versatility. They come in a wide range of colours and patterns, allowing for creative design possibilities. However, they can be cold underfoot and may require periodic maintenance. On the other hand, vinyl flooring offers affordability and comfort, with options that mimic the look of wood or stone. It’s resilient and easy to clean but may not have the same longevity as ceramic. Wood panels bring a warm, natural feel to indoor spaces but can be vulnerable to moisture and wear over time. Each option has its own set of advantages and drawbacks, making the
selection of indoor tiles a crucial decision in achieving the desired look and functionality. Outdoor tiling holds a pivotal role in shaping the appeal and longevity of our external environments. It’s not merely a decorative choice but a practical one, given the harsh conditions outdoor spaces often endure. The right outdoor tiles can transform a mundane backyard or patio into an inviting, functional extension of your living space. When it comes to selecting tiles for outdoor areas, factors like weather resistance, slip resistance, and durability take centre stage. Options for outdoor tiling are diverse. Natural stone, such as slate or granite, can lend a timeless, earthy charm to your outdoor space. It’s tough and resists temperature
fluctuations, but it can be expensive. On the other hand, porcelain tiles are exceptionally durable and come in various styles, mimicking the appearance of natural materials; however, they can be slippery when wet. Composite decking tiles are a cost-effective choice, but they might lack the elegance of natural stone or porcelain. Nevertheless, they can require more maintenance. The decision regarding outdoor tiling materials hinges on your climate, the intended use of the space, and your personal preferences, as each option brings its own blend of advantages and disadvantages to the table.
Tiling for bathroom and shower spaces requires a careful balance between aesthetics and practicality, given their unique demands. The primary consideration in these areas is water resistance. Bathroom and shower tiles must be able to withstand constant exposure to moisture without compromising their visual appeal. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are top choices for shower floors and walls due to their excellent water resistance. They come in various styles, including wood-look and stone-look options, offering an array of design possibilities. However, their grout lines may require frequent cleaning. For those seeking a more
luxurious touch, natural stone tiles like marble or travertine can add elegance to bathroom and shower interiors. Yet, they need proper sealing and maintenance to prevent water damage. Glass tiles offer a contemporary aesthetic look and are also water-resistant, but they can be slippery and require diligent cleaning. In bathrooms and showers, weighing the beauty of your choice against its practicality is crucial, ensuring the selected tiles meet the unique demands of these wet areas. In the world of tiling, the options are abundant, each with its own set of advantages and drawbacks. To create spaces that truly reflect your vision, consider the location, purpose, and personal preferences. Informed decisions in tile selection can lead to enduring beauty and functionality. So, choose wisely and transform your spaces into something extraordinary.
PAINT POWER
Defining Spaces with Colour
Design with Purpose Our minds are automatically processing or “reading” the visual landscape, and our homes or interior spaces are no different. We instantly and unconsciously respond to light, colour and shapes to understand our environment. In large part, colour sets the tone, and when used strategically, colour can help divert attention or draw the eye to make the most of any room’s best assets.
Take it all in All the items in a room make up the overall palette, so don’t forget to factor in the colour of floors, furniture, carpets, curtains, art etc. Choose wall colours that work well with these elements to achieve balance. If elements are neutral, the room is probably screaming for some pops of colour. However, if you have quite a bit of colour in your floors and furnishings, neutral walls might be the sweet simplicity that is needed.
Warm and Cool Colours have different characteristics and can be understood in two main groups. Warm colours (reds, yellows, pinks, oranges) will up our energy. Great for social, active and creative spaces. Warm colours work well in kitchen and dining rooms, but also creative spaces or perhaps a workout area. 38
October 2023
Cool colours (blues and greens) mirror nature and tend to evoke calm and relaxation. They suit areas where we want to unwind such as bathrooms and bedrooms, and can work well for study areas or office environments to promote concentration. Coordinate warm and cool by choosing colours that are of similar intensity.
How much colour? It has been well studied that colour has an effect on us, and while colours can lift us, too much colour can also bring us down. Just like sound, when colour is turned up really loud (think heavy saturated colours or brights) or if there are too many colours (or clutter), it can overwhelm us, drain our energy and cause stress. That doesn’t mean there is no role for strong colours – it just means use them wisely. Add pops of colours to create accents, feature walls or go to town in off-beat spaces.
Lighten and Brighten Some colours will suck the light out of a room. They literally absorb the light. That could be your vibe. Dark. Dramatic. Cosy. However, if you want rooms to look light and airy, try out soft off-whites that reflect lots of natural light.
Paints carry a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) where 0 is pitch black and 100 is white. Look for colours rated 80-100 to keep rooms lightest. Soft whites give you lots of colour options. They are still fresh but are less assertive than pure bright white.
Create a focal point Use paint to create interest or to direct the gaze. On the flip side, paint can be used to camouflage details you’d rather people not see. Every room should have a clear centre of attention. It could be a window, a piece of furniture, an accent wall or a piece of art, but let there be only one star to achieve a balanced and cohesive design.
Try out your look When reimagining your space, it helps a lot to test out a few colours to see what looks best. Harris Paints sell handy-size mini pots just for this purpose. They’re just $5 and available in over 1300 colours in either flat or satin finishes.

A
utonomous Sensory Meridian Response, better known across the Internet as ASMR, is one of the most popular trends on YouTube and TikTok. This captivating social experience is responsible for soothing, relaxing and tingly sensations and can play a significant role in providing a unique form of inspiration to transform your home. ASMR is an experience which has a growing online community specifically dedicated to creating and enjoying the 40

content. The videos often feature a wide array of triggers, such as gentle whispering, tapping, cleaning and brushing and many other personal attention scenarios. People seek out and use ASMR content for various reasons, whether it is to relax, sleep better or simply find a moment of tranquillity in our chaotic world. ASMR videos can also capture the essence of literally any activity, and the humble laundry room has become a surprising favourite. The reasons behind ASMR appeal are varied and, for many, it is a way to alleviate
stress and anxiety and relaxation, but it can also provide inspiration to viewers for their homes and apartments. The laundry room stands out for various reasons, but with its unassuming nature, it has quietly crept into the spotlight. Laundry involves a series of repetitive, rhythmic tasks. From folding clothes and the gentle hum of the washing machine to the satisfying clicks of buttons and restocking for aesthetic appeal, viewers find a mesmerising appeal which not only allows for comfort but also boosts creativity for a more aesthetically pleasing home.
Pictures compliments of west coast villa
While the visual satisfaction of watching clothes being folded meticulously, towels being neatly stacked, and laundry being sorted can be oddly satisfying, it also allows the viewer the option to take some of the tips learnt and apply them to their own space. The laundry room is also a haven for soft noise. Between the consistent sound of the machine, the smells and aromas and the soft rustling of fabric, ASMR is now considered a classic auditory and visual experience which can incite a form of connection that can be mimicked during their daily routines. For some, the laundry room reminds them of simpler times, perhaps when they were children or teenagers helping with household chores. This nostalgic element can be deeply comforting, evoking memories of home and family, especially around special holidays such as Christmas. The rise of laundry room ASMR has not gone unnoticed, and companies in their marketing strategies have begun to use the social trend to encourage people to purchase decorative items, certain brands and many other items to make their home feel and look special. One of the most compelling aspects of laundry room ASMR is the meditative and relaxing vibe which comes from it. This alone allows viewers to enjoy taking part in household chores without it feeling like a stressor. With the popularity steadily rising of ASMR, regardless of the activity, it highlights how digital relaxation and comfort can also contribute to transformations of homes in reality. Therefore, whether you are seeking to transform spaces in your home or simply seeking a peaceful way to unwind, the ASMR experience is proof that sometimes the most ordinary visual and auditory experiences can become extraordinary sources of tranquillity.

ROOFING DOS AND DON’TS by Dominique Toppin
THE DON’TS: Never neglect issues on your roof even if they are minor. Small problems can quickly escalate leading to more extensive and costly repairs. While a clean roof can enhance the overall appeal of your home, it is important that power washing the roof is kept to a minimum or avoided completely. High water pressure on a roof can result in damage to shingles and even dislodge granules, reducing the overall lifespan. Professional roofers encourage persons to never ignore ventilation as inadequate air quality can lead to mould and rot, which ultimately affects the quality of the roof and the health of members in the home. While foot traffic on the roof can be necessary, it is advised to never make it a regular habit as it can lead to damage and leaks.
T
he roof of your home is one of the most critical components in maintaining shelter and safety. For islands such as Barbados, which are classified as Small Island Developing States and which are extremely vulnerable to natural disasters, this protective shield must be in tip-top shape as it plays a vital role in maintaining the structural integrity of a house. To ensure that your roof remains in excellent condition and stands the test of time, it is crucial to be aware of the dos and don’ts of roofing. See the below for some necessary roofing tips you, your family and friends can benefit from: THE DOS: Regular inspections are one of the most efficient yet simple practices one can take when it comes to safeguarding a roof. It allows the homeowner to identify issues before they become major problems and perform routine maintenance before it becomes a major issue. Since the roof is an important part of the overall structure of the house, it is important to choose quality materials to ensure that it is not easily damaged. While there are many tips for do-it-yourself handymen and women, people are encouraged to hire a professional roofer for major installations and repairs. A skilled professional can ensure that your roof is installed correctly, reducing the risk of problems in the future. Using a waterproofing membrane on membrane is an important component of roofing and is especially necessary in areas which are prone to heavy rainfall. DOWNPOUR DEFENDERS by Akil Franklyn
A
s the first raindrops patter against your roof, have you ever considered the unsung heroes of your home—your gutters? These humble, often overlooked channels are the silent protectors of your sanctuary. They shield your house from the torrential forces of nature, ensuring your foundation stands strong and your interiors remain dry. The primary purpose of gutters is to channel rainwater away from your home’s foundation. When rain cascades down your roof, gutters catch this deluge and redirect it through downspouts, preventing the formation of puddles that can seep into your foundation, causing cracks and costly structural damage. But that’s not all—gutters also shield your landscaping. Without them, rainwater would pour off your roof, eroding soil, damaging plants, and leaving an unsightly mess. In essence, these unassuming attachments are the silent champions that keep your home and your surroundings beautiful. Gutters come in various materials, each with its unique advantages. Common materials include durable aluminium, traditional and aesthetically appealing copper, and low-maintenance vinyl. These materials offer different price points and lifespans to suit your preferences and budget. In addition to material, gutter shapes and sizes vary. The most prevalent are K-style gutters, known for their efficiency and modern appearance, and half-round gutters, which evoke a classic charm. Gutters also come in various sizes to accommodate different rain loads, from 4-inch to 6-inch options, ensuring you

can tailor your choice to your specific home’s needs and architectural style. Professional installation of gutters is advised to ensure their effectiveness and longevity. A skilled installer understands the nuances of a proper slope, ensuring that water flows smoothly towards downspouts, preventing pooling or leakage. They also determine the right gutter size for your home based on factors like roof area and rainfall patterns. Additionally, experts strategically place downspouts to efficiently direct water away from your foundation. Investing in professional installation guarantees a seamless fit, as well as providing peace of
mind, safeguarding your home from water damage. To keep your gutters in optimal condition, regular cleaning is essential. Remove leaves, twigs, and debris to prevent blockages. Depending on your location and surrounding trees, aim for seasonal or semi-annual cleaning. Keeping gutters clean ensures they function flawlessly, protecting your home. In the grand symphony of homeownership, gutters may play a quiet tune, but their significance is unmistakable. Well-maintained gutters preserve the beauty and strength of your home and ensure it remains a haven in all weather conditions.
