Nature’s Wonders Moments that Mark the Seasons

Jane V. Adams

National Trust Books

9781911657521 • 221 x 170 mm £14.99 • Hardback • 176pp March 2023

Britain’s nature year, from the first flower to the last leaf. With a mix of evocative writing, beautiful photographs and incredible nature facts, this book explores 50 wonders of Britain’s natural world, and why it’s so important to protect it. Following the seasons, it will inspire you to reconnect with nature and notice how it changes throughout the year. You’ll discover how spiders can heal us and why wood anemones are known as ‘windflowers’.

Nature’s Wonders is inspired by the National Trust’s Blossom Watch campaign, launched in March 2020: each year we are encouraged to notice and share our first sight of blossom, emulating the Japanese tradition of Hanami.

Nature Poems

National Trust Books 9780008596026 • 192 x 136 mm £9.99 • Paperback • 160pp April 2023

Over 100 poems about Britain’s nature in a beautifully illustrated book to treasure forever.

Seven chapters touch on different aspects of Britain’s natural landscapes, including seasons, birds and wildlife, woods, water, moors and mountains. This carefully chosen collection will inspire you to explore nature through a poet’s eye – the ultimate antidote to times when ‘the world is too much with us’, as Wordsworth so beautifully put it.

There are celebrated poems by the greats – John Keats, William Butler Yeats, Alfred Tennyson, Robert Browning, Christina Rossetti, Philip Larkin, Sylvia Plath, Emily Brontë, Robert Burns, Dylan Thomas – as well as others by contemporary poets whose work you will want to seek out and explore further, including Carol Ann Duffy, Simon Armitage and Jean Sprackland.

The poems are selected by Deborah Alma, a poet herself and proprietor of the Poetry Pharmacy in Shropshire, where she prescribes perfect poems to suit people’s needs.

Borrowed Landscapes

China and Japan in the Historic Houses and Gardens of Britain and Ireland

Emile de Bruijn

National Trust Cultural Heritage Publishing in association with Philip Wilson Publishers • 9781781300985

280 x 230 mm • £35 • Hardback • 256pp October 2023

The European passion for East Asian art has had a profound impact in Britain since the 17th century, and nowhere is this more evident than in the houses and gardens of the National Trust.

Chinese and Japanese influences on country-house décor and garden design began with luxury imports from the Far East, with domestic artisans and manufacturers soon adding their own fanciful interpretations of ‘oriental’ art to the mix. Those imitative styles and tastes have traditionally been known as chinoiserie and japonisme, but here they are treated as elements of the wider and still very relevant phenomenon of orientalism, or the way the West sees the East. Filled with extraordinary, hitherto little-researched objects, this book provides new insights and visual delights for those interested in Chinese and Japanese art, orientalism and historic country houses and gardens.

Emile de Bruijn is the National Trust’s Assistant National Curator, Decorative Arts, and author of Chinese Wallpaper in Britain and Ireland (2017).
