The International Reggae Poster Contest
The International Reggae Poster Contest (IRPC) is a celebration of the global impact of Jamaican popular music.
Art and reggae music take center stage outside a commercial environment. IRPC is designed to highlight the far-reaching achievements of reggae and its positive influence across the world. For IRPC, the term reggae encompasses all the popular genres of Jamaican music: ska, rocksteady, roots reggae, dub, dancehall, and the unique Jamaican sound system.
YEARS COUNTING &
The international response to the Contest far exceeded our expectations with 9280 entries, from 800 designers from 90 countries. This creative outburst demonstrates, without a doubt, that reggae music has touched the hearts and minds of music lovers the world over. This powerful synergy of reggae and art presents an inspiring vision to the world.
The IRPC is a platform to launch the Reggae Hall of Fame in Kingston, conceived as a museum and performing arts centre worthy of the grand scale of Jamaican popular music. IRPC’s success is testimony to the fact that the world has long been ready for a spectacular celebration of this potent music. The question, and the imperative, “Why not?” invariably emerged during conversations that IRPC founder, Michael Thompson often had with lovers of reggae. Michael decided to take action, creating and posting a series of reggae-inspired posters at freestylee.net, category Reggae Art. He wanted to draw attention to the fact that Jamaica needs to preserve the greatness of reggae music in a substantial way, by creating an institution that will be a catalyst to change the face of Kingston and reggae. Another very important objective of IRPC is to raise funds for Alpha Boys’ School. An auction is held at the end of each exhibition (and sometimes throughout an exhibition) and the proceeds go to the music department at Alpha Boys’ School. Alpha is a great Jamaican success story, to be celebrated and promoted. Without Alpha, we might not have had this global music we call reggae.

Maria Papaefstathiou is an accomplished graphic designer, illustrator and blogger from Athens, Greece. She focuses on poster design, in particular, social posters and portraits. Her most recent project is a series that celebrates great personalities of traditional and popular culture from Greece and Jamaica. These include actors, singers, musicians, poets etc. Maria has been invited to participate in many international exhibitions. Her posters have been showcased in numerous group exhibitions, for example in Belgium, China, Greece, Jamaica, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, and the USA. She has won several awards for her brilliant designs.
Maria is the co-founder with Michael ‘Freestylee’ Thompson of the International Reggae Poster Contest, which was launched in December 2011. She is also the founder and editor of the graphicart-news.com blog. She passionately curates high-quality designs, illustrations, and art from all over the world. Many designers consider her provocative blog to be an exceptional educational tool. The present exhibition is a classic manifestation of her philosophy: “I believe that design is a powerful tool that we designers can use to spark enthusiasm, change mindsets and bring positive actions to our world and our culture.”
