There will be bad days at sea,” informs Rick Petersen, training coordinator for the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association. “But the difference between those that survive and those that will die comes down to being prepared and having a muscle memory of what to do in an emergency.” Petersen will guide a seminar audience to strengthen survival skills using case studies this afternoon in the session, “Crew Duties for At-Sea Emergencies,” taking place at 3 p.m. at the Concourse Stage (see more details on page 5). The focus on crew responsibilities will help participants build that critical muscle memory. AMSEA is a nonprofit organization with a nationwide network of safety instructors, including Petersen, whose background in commercial fishing includes deck work on a purse seiner and salmon troller. — Jean Paul Vellotti

Fishing Into the Future In 1994, Bob Desautel co-founded Nina Fisheries, a fishing company that became international in 1998 as it extended into Chile and Argentina. In 2001, Desautel cofounded Global Seas, a subsidiary of Nina Fisheries, which quickly became one of the West Coast’s premier vessel management companies. Under Desautel’s direction, Global Seas expanded its to the U.S. East Coast and ventured into the maritime research field in 2002. In 1978, while studying business at the University of Nevada, Desautel began his career as a deckhand fishing in the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. In 1980, he advanced to the role of captain and served in that capacity on a variety of fishing vessels until 2002, when he retired from the ocean to focus on the expansion of Global Seas. Desautel has served as president and board member of the North Pacific Fishing Vessel Owners’ Association, advocating for safety education in the commercial fishing industry by providing information about U.S. Coast Guard requirements, OSHA compliance standards, MARPOL, hands-on training programs, and safety seminars and workshops. In 1993, Desautel co-founded United Catcher Boats, served as a board member and later as vice president, all the while promoting the organization’s importance to Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska and West Coast fisheries. His efforts serving on these boards, as well as his involvement in other fisheries organizations, have improved safety and created efficiencies in the commercial fishing and maritime industries. Desautel holds a U.S. Coast Guard (issue no. 6) Masters 3000 ITC License.

when we have to be pushing hard. “You always have these preseason rumors about you’re going to have a lot of crab here, a lot of crab there. There’s always speculation, but you never really know what’s going to happen until everybody has their crab pots in the water. “I think it’s easier to predict than salmon because the crab are living within 10 miles of the coast, not hundreds of miles of the coast. You can track them down in the ocean a lot easier than you can track down salmon in the ocean. If there are no crab, you know. If there are crab, you know.”

BRENT PAINE Executive director of United Catcher Boats out of Seattle on the Bering Sea pollock B-season, which runs June to October “The boats are tied up in Dutch Harbor, Akutan, or they’re headed down here [to Seattle] to get some shipyard work done between the time when we start fishing again in January. “The acceptable biological catch limit was extremely high, and the allowable catch was 1.4 million metric tons or something like that, so the biomass is at almost an all-time high based on the stock assessment and the trawl surveys. We saw that in spades this summer in the B season. It was some of the best fishing conditions on the eastern Bering Sea that the pollock fleet had ever experienced. “They’re done early because the catch rate was very high, which is good. When we have high catch rates, we have low salmon bycatch rates because we’re not towing the nets for long periods of time… That tends to allow for a high bycatch rate, so the other thing we always work with is trying to minimize our chinook and chum salmon bycatch, and we’ve come in very good in terms of the number of chinook salmon we’re taking as bycatch.”

T
he pollock fleet’s newest boat, owned by Global Seas of Seattle, is not entirely new. The original structure was built in 2006 and even its name comes from an old Global Seas boat.The new Defender, however, is set to be a true standout in the fleet. Stan Frech, Global Seas port engineer, oversaw the conversion of the 164-foot Western Venture, an East Coast pair trawler, at Patti Marine Enterprises in Pensacola, Fla. “The shell is fantastic,” Frech says. “That’s why we bought the boat.” Since making the purchase in 2014, the Global Seas team added a slew of unique features. Most notably, the Defender will be one of a few Alaskan pollock boats pumping its fish on board. As a pair trawler, the boat side pumped its catch. During the conversion, it was fitted to stern-pump fish. Greg Shuey, Global Seas operations manager, explained that the net will be shaped into “a big horseshoe at the back of the boat,” and a pump inserted into the back of the net will suck fish from the water to the boat’s holding tanks. “The idea is that the pump will be a better treatment for the fish,” Shuey says. “A trawl net can hold 100 tons, so the squish factor is high when considering the traditional method of lifting a net onboard. Shuey hopes the quality added by pumping will fetch a premium. Once the fish are onboard, they’ll travel through a 14-inch stainless steel pipe to the factory deck and dewatering room — this space is so new, the Defender crew has yet to settle on an official name — where the fish will be dewatered, poured onto conveyor belts, and finally tipped into the boat’s RSW tanks.The steel pipes sport custom “water cannons” that allow crew to 10 NATIONAL FISHERMAN EXPO DAILY / DAY 1 / 2016

hook up deck hoses, spray against the flow of fish, and break up — fingers crossed — anything holding up the pumping. The Defender’s capacity is broken up into 10 narrow holds. The specialized design reduces “slosh,” giving the boat greater stability and improving the quality of pollock delivered. These tanks will hold upward of 2.2 million pounds and will make the Defender the largest wet fish hold capacity vessel in the United States. Though the crew loses deck space for mending projects, two full sets of gear on deck, ready to set means the boat is always ready to fish — even immediately following a hang-up or tear. Fully remodeled, the wheelhouse now includes eight 52-inch flat screens arranged in an arc in front of the captain’s chair.With a few simple swipes, the captain can arrange radars, charts, sounders and more, providing all the information he needs in one central space. ever doubt the power of a YouTube video. That was the experience of a group of Russian fishermen near the island of Iturup. The fishermen were stymied. They knew there was a lot more fish in the waters they were working; they just couldn’t land them. Then they saw a couple of YouTube videos depicting Alaskan seiners hauling in a lot of salmon. Brett Snow of Seattle’s Snow & Co. says the Russians were fishing a Danish form of bottom seining called snorvold. “Basically you lay out
a big warp, the net goes down and they double back on the warp. When they double back, it kind of closes the net up.” It was leaving a lot of fish in the water. Snow and four of his employees found themselves on a plane to Russia. They also sent three new seine skiffs as well as two used seine skiffs. In addition, the Russian fishermen purchased two used West Coast seiners, and Snow says, “we helped them convert three existing boats they had into purse seiners.” Down in Reedsport, Ore., Fred Wahl and his crew at Fred Wahl Marine Construction are staying close to home. which lies just across the Umpqua River. In late October, a new 660-ton travel lift was due to be tested on Bolon Island with the lifting of the 80' x 39' Miss Berdie. That’s the same boat Fred Wahl Marine Construction sponsoned in 1991 and again in 2015. She doesn’t hit the 660ton mark, but Wahl says, “We’re goin’ flood it,

and it’ll come to 660.” The island facility came with a 400' x 120' fabrication shop and a 12,000-square-foot paint shop, both left behind by the previous owner, the American Bridge Co. The paint shop isn’t tall enough to drive the travel lift into, but Wahl has a new 250-ton hydraulic trailer that can take boats in and out of the shop. Next summer, a 200' x 160' building will be built with 70 feet of clearance, allowing the new travel lift to carry boats inside that building.

The new design and materials posed challenges to performance testing, so Breedt created a new kind of testing unit for marine fenders, the Waterbok. BPT Design creates solutions for challenges across the manufacturing industry, including aerospace, vertical lifting equipment, construction supplies, exercise equipment, rubber molding, plastic injection molding, computer hardware and hydroponic farming.

On Tuesday, June 21, 2016, Palfinger Marine received an order for three marine cranes for the 265-foot factory freezer trawler America’s Finest. The vessel is being built at the Dakota Creek shipyard in Anacortes, Wash., for Kirkland-based Fishermen’s Finest. America’s Finest was designed by Skipsteknisk in Ålesund, Norway, with Seattle-based Elliot Bay Design Group providing manufacturing design work.
America’s Finest is the most advanced factory freezer trawler under construction in the United States and will be delivered in November 2017 to participate in the North Pacific and Bering Sea groundfish fisheries. This is the first order Palfinger Marine has won for a vessel of this caliber in the Pacific Northwest. “America’s Finest is a state of the art factory freezer trawler and having these three Palfinger Marine cranes aboard not only proves that Palfinger Marine has been recognized for its high quality, reliability and safety products, it also opens a lot of gates for the future,” explains Brian Jacob, Palfinger Marine business development manager based in Seattle.

You wouldn’t expect anything less from Furuno Booth 1509 Furuno’s FAR3230SSSDBB/12 solid-state S-band radar generates clear echo images, even from weak targets and small craft. Furuno’s newly developed power amplifier generates properly modulated RF to targets around the vessel, while the receiver catches and processes weak signals. The new fanless antenna design requires far less maintenance compared to radars that rely on a magnetron.
Simrad’s PX TrawlEye Booth 1221 Simrad’s PX TrawlEye is becoming the chosen tool for those who want wireless data on fish in the trawl. The PX TrawlEye is the first of a new line of true multifunction sensors from Simrad. The TrawlEye provides a high-resolution image of fish and footrope and bottom if placed on the headrope at the mouth of the trawl. data from 100 cells in the vertical plane. It is 100 cells regardless of the range. Thus, if the range is 100 meters, each cell is 1 meter. If the range is 10 meters, each cell is 10 cm! The result is a much higher resolution of the area of interest. This is similar to the phasing done in an echosounder for the bottom expander. This needs to be done before setting the net! The TrawlEye sends the echosounder image as well as pitch, roll, depth, temperature and battery status. It also includes a feature that gives the fisherman the distance to the bottom as the trawl sinks. This is useful from 95 meters to the bottom and is helpful in eliminating crashing

New concept in seine sensors Booth 712 Marport presents a new concept in seine sensors. Mounted on the foot/leadline of a purse seine in a robust protective steel case, the Seine Explorer transfers data to the wheelhouse as a purse seine is shot away and throughout its operation. Its use of omnidirectional uplink technology ensures no loss of signal throughout the seining operation. The skipper sees an echogram of the shot in
real time, displaying the distance to the seabed and an integrated digital readout of the depth of water above and below the footrope. Marport’s Seine Explorer is an essential tool for purse seining in shallow water to keep gear clear of ground obstructions. In both deep and shallow water, the upward-seeking option that provides distance to the surface gives the skipper an accurate indication of the sinking speed of the foot/leadline. An integrated depth sensor also relays information about the speed at which the gear sinks, is lifted or moves to initiate the purse.
The Deck-Boss 15-inch boot’s injection molded upper eliminates delamination and cracking. The Herkules Grip provides superior traction on wet surfaces. The flexible upper folds down, and a 1-inch groove holds a silicone band that keeps pants out of the muck and legs dry. The boot’s interior mimics the bilge space in a boat. Perforations in the softer upper deck and scuppers around the perimeter of the lower deck allow liquid to drain into the bilge space. The lower deck sits on pilings that the create bilge space. Grundéns, producer of the world’s leading foul-weather gear since 1911, will offer the boot at retail in April 2017 for $129, sizes 6-14.

This system also features 38- and 200-kHz transducers, both at 18 degrees. Identical beam angles means seeing the exact same
water column and water volume coverage on two frequencies. This allows makes it easier to compare fish responses on different frequencies.
