DAY 3

Fisherman of the Year title is yours to catch

T

he Fisherman of the Year competition pits attendees against each other in the ultimate battle, putting three skills to the test: the ability to mend a rim-racked net, accurately tie a set of strong knots (to simulate a moonless night on the high seas, contestants are blindfolded) and splice a line. Only three fishermen will make it to the final round to demonstrate a skill that could save their lives one day, putting on a survival suit in record time. Experts say fishermen need to be able to get into an immersion suit in a minute; some contestants have halved that time in previous years. The competition starts Friday at high noon on the main stage. Compete or cheer on your favorite crewman. — Samuel Hill

Climate change will produce winners and losers in Alaskan fisheries BY CLIFF WHITE

A

laska’s major commercial fisheries will likely face significant challenges as a result of climate change, with some species facing bleak futures and others poised to thrive due to warming water temperatures and rising ocean acidity, according to Terry Johnson, a professor of fisheries with the University of Alaska’s Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program. Speaking on Friday, Nov. 18, at Pacific Marine Expo, Johnson said the biggest losers will be the crab and pollock fisheries, while flounder and halibut face a brighter future and the fate of salmon is mixed based on their spawning and migration habits. “Pollock are confronting a grim future,” Johnson said. “If you comb through the literature, you’ll see a lot of things that indicate that if temperatures continue to increase, that will have downward effect on pollock in the Bering Sea.” The king,Tanner and snow crab fisheries are also in for a “major hit,” Johnson said. “Things do not look good for the future of the crab industry,” he said. “In general, they all respond to the same triggers and are probably in for a decline.” The full impact of warming waters on fisheries in Alaska and the Bering Sea won’t be felt for another 30 to 40 years, Johnson said. But with average annual temperatures trending consistently up, and last year 6 NATIONAL FISHERMAN EXPO DAILY / DAY 3 / 2016

ranking as the warmest ever on record in the Bering Sea, wide-scale biological changes are likely, if not inevitable, Johnson said. Overall, that news is not necessarily bad from a purely commercial perspective, Johnson said. “Projections that have been done suggest that in

Halibut seem to respond well to higher temperatures and may be entering a period of higher production, and salmon might be able to move into new grounds in the Arctic that “may eventually be large enough to support a commercial fishery,” Johnson said. However, existing populations of sockeye, king

and silver salmon may be disturbed, and could decline. So far, according to Johnson, there haven’t been significant consequences from long-term climate change documented in Alaskan fisheries. And Johnson told his audience they shouldn’t take his predictions as gospel. “Making predictions is difficult when so many variables remain unknown,” Johnson said.

THE HULL STORY Three new boat designs are firsts for trawlers, longliners and tenders BY JEAN PAUL VELLOTTI

T

he boatbuilding sector is singing an especially positive note. Pacific Marine Expo was upbeat for all facets of the industry, thanks to busy yards and new orders. On the new construction front, three very different boats for three very different fisheries have emerged. In fact, each design marks a first for its fishery. Vigor’s new 144-foot freezer longliner marks a new class of “affordable” production boats. Developed around the idea of using an assembly line to shift away from one-off construction, the company hopes these North Pacific workhorses will evolve into a fleet that not only simplifies construction, but minimizes downtime by popularizing common parts and spares. “A new class of longliners is a central need for the recapitalization of the North Pacific fishing fleet. Fishermen need to know they can depend on the design, and it better be affordable,” explains Keith Whittemore, executive VP of business development at Vigor. Down the coast in Charleston, Ore., the crew at Giddings Boatworks is getting ready to cut the steel for a new 79-foot loadline limit trawler. Designed by Coastwise Corp. with a 36-foot beam and draft of 13' 7", the boat has a bulbous bow and is a replacement vessel for the Kodiak fishery. New boats at 79 feet and under are no longer required to be designed and built using classification standards. That adds time and money to a project, as well as limiting gear options. This hull will also use a Tier 3 engine so long as the keel is laid down in December this year, as projected. “This is going to be the first trawler built for the Kodiak in a long time,” notes Mike Lee, general manager at Giddings, withholding the name of the owners with a chuckle. Lastly, here in Seattle, Snow & Co. sent a new flat-bottom aluminum shellfish tender to Rockpoint Oyster Co. in Dabob Bay at the top of the Hood Canal. The low-freeboard design will operate in extremely shallow waters, enough to warrant a jetdrive instead of the outboard used in a similar boat built last year that was sent to California. “It’s pretty much a scow with a dory bow,” said Brett Snow, owner of the company. “But the biggest challenge with the flat bottom is that it’s very hard to keep the jet from cavitating. So we built a little air dam in front of the jet to stop bubbles and force them outboard.” With a Cummins 425-hp driving a Almarin Jet 340, this new model not only can move out to the grounds quickly, but once the crates of oysters are loaded on deck with the Maximum Performance crane, it has plenty of torque to drive in a full load in shallow water, which solves an issue for operating in shallow water.

n northern California, Van Peer Boatworks in Fort Bragg finished a 66' x 24' 6" combination boat, which launched in September. Jensen Maritime Consultants in Seattle designed the steel dragger and crabber, named the Noyo Dawn, after the Noyo River in Fort Bragg. Except for an additional 3 feet of length, it’s the same design used for the Jes An in 2005 and the Fierce Leader in 2007. The Jes An was built for Tim Estes, while the 66-footer is being built for his father, Tom Estes, and

Tom Estes Jr. will skipper the Noyo Dawn out of Fort Bragg, which is also where the Jes An ties up. Te new boat is powered by a 750-hp Cummins QSK19 matched up with a Twin Disc marine gear with a 6:1 reduction. A pair of used hydraulic trawl winches built by Yaquina Boat Equipment in Toledo, Ore., is on the deck. This was more than just another boat for Chris Van Peer. It’s his last. He has been building boats for 43 years, and in that time Van Peer Boatworks launched 31 boats. The 66-footer will be number 32. In November 2013, Northern Marine, which had not built a commercial fishing boat, launched the 58-foot seiner Optimus for John Barry of Silver Bay, Alaska. Then this September, Northern Marine, a division of Concorde Marine in Burlington, Wash., was

AROUND THE YARDS

The second 58-foot fiberglass seiner to be built at Northern Marine. A third is also under construction.

Both 58' x 25' 6" boats are going to Alaska and “will be used primarily as seiners,” says Stuart Archer with Concorde Marine. The 58-foot design does not appear that different from other 58-foot seiners above the waterline. But instead of a cylindrical shape extending straight out from the bow, the bulb sweeps up from the forefoot to about the waterline, doesn’t go out very far and has a slight pear shape. “There’s been an evolution of bulbs,” says Archer. One benefit of the bulb design is the boat is able to reach “some fairly good speeds. Fully loaded that’s a little over 10.5 knots,” says Archer, and packing “about 240,000 pounds.” READ MORE about these yards in National Fisherman. Get 16 issues for only $10 at booth 755.

optimal situational awareness in the most adverse conditions. Outstanding target resolution is achieved using beam sharpening technology when paired with the Simrad Broadband 3G/4G radomes or Halo Pulse Compression arrays. The R2009 and R3016 radar control units are well suited for use as standalone dedicated radar stations. Commercial operators will appreciate the professional-grade interface and ease of installation, even in demanding retrofit applications. The R2009 and R3016 are built to meet tough working environments with robust bracket- and flush-mount installation options and are IPX7 water-resistant from all sides.

Harris offers your personal pilot Booth 1509 NavPilot is a revolutionary autopilot with a sunlight viewable display designed for a variety of vessels. It uses a self-learning and adaptive software algorithm, and plays the ultimate role in course-keeping capability. NavPilot dynamically adjusts essential parameters during navigation, such as vessel speed, trim, draught, tide and wind effects, dead band, weather and more. These parameters are stored in system memory and continuously optimized to make the NavPilot more versatile.

Lunde has your go-to sonar Booth 1221 The Simrad SN90 sonar is the go-to sonar for smaller trawlers as well as large vessels. Small trawlers benefit from this design because it does not require a large hull unit and hole in the hull. In fact, it doesn’t require a hull unit at all. The transducer is essentially a 1-foot cube. This transducer can be installed on the bulb, below the bulb or on the keel. This sonar looks forward and “ensonifies” an area 160 degrees port to starboard and 90 degrees from surface 14 NATIONAL FISHERMAN EXPO DAILY / DAY 3 / 2016

to bottom. There is the traditional horizontal sonar view and the more modern vertical slice view, but there are also three inspection beams (like ES70s or ES80s) that can be steered in any direction inside the 160 by 90 degree area! This means the fisherman can get fish size and biomass forward of the boat instead of waiting to cross over the fish and see that information on the ES80. This tells the fisherman where to steer the vessel with some valuable data rather than simply the size of the blob on the screen. A big blob of small fish might be way less valuable than a smaller blob of big fish. This sonar lets the fisherman target the fish

and with experience, the fisherman can use these tools to make species decisions and avoid as much as target the “right” fish!

What can’t Grundéns do? Booth 721 Today, Grundéns is proud to introduce its Deck-Boss Boot. Designed for fishermen and proudly built in the Pacific Northwest, the Deck Boss Boot provides superior durability, comfort and traction on wet surfaces and uses injection molded construction, patent-pending insole technology, and patented Herkules Grip soles. “We think we’ve built the best boot possible, through our years of experience listening to what fishermen need and extensive field testing,” said Mike Jackson, Grundéns president.

Marport’s Catch Explorer monitors your cod end Booth 712 Marport introduces a new concept in catch and sounder combination sensors: the Catch Explorer CE-100-W to monitor the cod-end or tunnel of the trawl. This downward-looking, high-frequency, high-resolution sensor is fitted on the top mesh of the cod end or tunnel for the skipper

to monitor the contents of the cod end or fish transiting the tunnel in real time as the gear is deployed, providing updates on the fish as they pass into the cod end from the trawl opening through the belly. This gives a rolling echogram image of the volume of catch in addition to the data supplied by the usual catch cod end sensors that are triggered as a certain amount has been caught. The Catch Explorer also features depth, temperature, and pitch and roll data.

The Deck-Boss 15-inch boot’s injection molded upper eliminates delamination and cracking. The Herkules Grip provides superior traction on wet surfaces. The flexible upper folds down, and a 1-inch groove holds a silicone band that keeps pants out of the muck and legs dry. The boot’s interior mimics the bilge space in a boat. Perforations in the softer upper deck and scuppers around the perimeter of the lower deck allow liquid to drain into the bilge space. The lower deck sits on pilings that the create bilge space. Grundéns, producer of the world’s leading foul-weather gear since 1911, will offer the boot at retail in April 2017 for $129, sizes 6-14.

EXHIBITOR PRODUCT NEWS Simrad has a sonar for the smaller boat Booth 921 The Simrad SN90 sonar is a hull unit less sonar that can be installed on smaller vessels. It can also be installed on larger vessels without a hull unit. If a hull unit is desired that is an option. A hull unit might be nice if a lot of fishing in the ice is being done or the transducer needs to be deeper. The SN90 is a broadband (CHIRP) sonar that can operate from 70 kHz to 120 kHz, either in a range or at any specific frequency

inside the range. The SN90 shows the fisherman where the greater concentration of fish is located in front of the vessel 160 degrees port to starboard and 90 degrees from surface to bottom. The ability to locate fish in this area is not limited to traditional presents or absence blobs but can show where the “meat” is or in which layer the fish are like when hake fishing. The SN90 shows the fish as “streaks,” as the vessel advances toward the fish and makes it easy to pick out the bigger fish visually. With experience, fishermen will be able to use this advanced and unique tool to make species identification probability guesses.

Stearns redesigns its Powerboat flotation jacket for improved comfort and protection Booth 1115 The Coleman Co., a leading producer of military and industrialgrade flotation devices, is pleased to announce the release of its improved Stearns I077 Powerboat jacket. The bomber-style jacket is now more comfortable and better protects the wearer from harsh environments. The I077, which retails for $329.99, features Suisse Aire flotation foam that helps lock in body heat while allowing for full range of motion. The new design features an integrated hood and improved wrist and waistbands that will not expand when they get wet, keeping you more dry throughout the day. “When we were redesigning this product, we worked with end users to ensure that the jacket met all of their needs,” said Darin Webb, senior director of Global Product Development for the Coleman Co., the owner of the Stearns brand. “Rather than just making a PFD shaped like a jacket, we made a jacket that doubles as a PFD,” added Webb. “Comfort and protection for those long days on deck was our main goal.”

SEAWEB SUMMIT

Q&A

Q:

What are the top questions that need to be addressed at this year’s summit?

The 2017 SeaWeb Seafood Summit is taking place in Seattle from June 5-7, 2017. Ray Hilborn, a global fisheries expert and University of Washington professor of aquatic and fisheries science will once again be participating as an attendee and presenter. In an interview with SeafoodSource, Hilborn praised the show for promoting a healthy dialogue between commercial and scientific interests. He also called for more commercial fishermen — and especially those from the Pacific Northwest — to make an effort to attend.

A: I would say that the top issue facing American fisheries, which is also coming up for European fisheries, is how to deal with mixed-stock fisheries. We’re seeing on the West Coast and in New England that they’re only catching 30 to 40 percent of what are very conservative TACs. Is that where we want to be, or can we find a way to get fuller utilization of our potential harvest?

Q:

Are you excited that the SeaWeb Seafood Summit is coming to your hometown?

A:

I think that it’s great that it’s taking place in Seattle next year — it’s a great place for the summit. We in the Pacific Northwest have so much interesting stuff to share. Whether its reducing bycatch or our fisheries management system, we have some really great and successful ideas at work here and that are helping maintain sustainable food production while also protecting biodiversity. I can’t wait.
