Prix de West Returns to the National Cowboy Museum

Art lovers rejoice – the 46th annual Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition & Sale Opening Weekend is June 8 – 9, 2018, at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

Recognized as the nation’s premier Western art exhibition and sale, Prix de West welcomes back more than 100 of the world’s most accomplished painters and sculptors. With works ranging from traditional Western scenes to wildlife, landscapes, and more contemporary pieces, these artists vie for several awards including the top honor: the Prix de West Purchase Award.

As is tradition, several new artists are invited in 2018. Robert Griffing, the newest member of the Prix de West fold, grew up in far western Pennsylvania where, as a child, he hunted native stone artifacts. After studying at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Griffing embarked on a 30-year advertising career. Yet, his love of native culture and history prompted his transition to fine art, with many of his paintings depicting 18th century Indians of the Eastern woodlands.

Works by guest artists Joel R. Johnson and Benjamin Wu will also appear at the 2018 Prix de West. Johnson, who earned a master’s degree in painting from Utah State University, is a watercolorist whose chosen medium gives his Western landscapes a signature luminosity and depth. Wu was raised in China where he studied at the Guangzhou Fine Art Institute before immigrating to the United States. In 1991 he earned his master’s degree from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. Since then, Wu has received various fine art awards and been featured in Art of the West and Western Art Collector.

Another Prix de West tradition is the artist’s bolo, designed especially for the event.

This year, artist Tim Shinabarger – soon to attend his 17th Prix de West – was asked to design the bolo, which depicts one of his most beloved subjects: the bighorn sheep.

Prix de West’s special lineup of seminars, offered at no additional cost, allows attendees the opportunity to hear revered artists dispense insight and advice.

Additionally, the Museum will host two hands-on workshops: “Oil Painting with Gusto!” June 4 – 7 with Prix de West artist Greg Beecham, and “Birds in Sculpture,” June 11 – 14 with Prix de West artist Sandy Scott.

Two new exhibitions – Unlocking the Vault: Mysteries and Marvels of the Museum and Do You See What I See? Painted Conversations by Theodore Waddell – are on display through May 13. In The Principles Office: Tom Ryan the Art Student opens on April 7. Two of the year’s most eagerly anticipated events occur in the spring: The Museum honors men and women for their works in literature, music, film, and television at the Western Heritage Awards®, April 13 – 14. The most prestigious Western art exhibition and sale in the nation, Prix de West® celebrates its 46th anniversary during Opening Weekend on June 8 – 9.

Also in April, enjoy the Museum’s first-ever Murder Mystery night and Family Sleepover, a Plein Air Paint Out, and more! May is just as exciting with the Annual Chuck Wagon Festival on Memorial Day Weekend. Summer will soon be upon us, and now is the time to enroll kids ages 8 – 15 in Western Explorers Summer Camp, June 18 – July 27.

Events April 13 – 14, 2018 • The 58th Annual Western Heritage Awards® Established in 1961, the Western Heritage Awards honors individuals who made significant contributions to our Western heritage and celebrates creative works in literature, music, and film that share the stories of the American West. This year Walter Vail (1852 – 1906) and Jim Odle will be inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners, Lynn Anderson (1947 – 2015) and Barry Corbin will be inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers, and Randy Cate will Western Heritage Awards masters of ceremonies receive the Chester A. Reynolds Award.

The 2018 Western Heritage Awards is unique in that the Museum will also honor Philip Anschutz with the inaugural Western Visionary Award. June 6 • Annie Oakley Society Luncheon, 11:30 a.m.

Sam Noble Special Events Center The Annie Oakley Society celebrates the diversity of America’s heritage by honoring significant women in our Nation who have achieved a remarkable first have been a trailblazer of national notoriety. Honorees are recognized each year at the Awards Luncheon, with all proceeds benefiting special educational programing initiatives at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. This year, the Society honors real estate mogul Mo Anderson. In addition, two new awards will be presented. The phenomenal recipients of the two inaugural awards are Gov. Bill Anoatubby receiving the Frank Butler Award and Darci Lynne Farmer receiving the Little Sure Shot Award. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, June 6 at 11:30 a.m. in the magnificent Sam Noble Special Events Center to celebrate the achievements of these outstanding honorees. Even those with natural ability often attend schools and studios to learn the principles. Western artist Tom Ryan (1922 – 2011) invested six years and three schools in his education; but what did he study? What was it like at the Art Students League in 1951? His lecture notes and assignments answer these questions and more. Learn the principles of art as he did; the meaning of snow on the shoulders; the difference between hues and values; the importance of anatomy; and the draftsmanship precision of perspective.

Through May 13, 2018 Life and Legacy: The Art of Jerome Tiger August 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of the passing of one of Oklahoma’s most celebrated artists, Jerome Tiger. Having only painted for five years, Tiger produced hundreds of works of art and won numerous awards throughout the country. Today, his work is shown in museums across the nation and he is recognized as one of the greatest Native American artists. To honor this anniversary, the Museum produced an exhibition of his selected works from its permanent collection, celebrating the life and legacy of this remarkable painter.

This exhibition is organized by the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and supported by News Channel 4 (KFOR).

June 8 – August 5, 2018 • Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition & Sale The Museum hosts its annual exhibition of more than 300 paintings and sculpture by the finest contemporary Western artists in the nation. This premier art exhibition features works ranging from historical pieces that reflect the early days of the West, to more contemporary and impressionistic works of art. Landscapes, wildlife art, and illustrative scenes are always highlighted in the exhibition.

Painted Conversations by Theodore Waddell Much of what the Museum’s visitors expect in experiencing art is largely influenced by the contemporary artists who represent the American West in what is considered an expression of “realism.” This exhibition redirects the visitors' attention to the importance of what they do not see rather than what they do see on the canvas, and the opportunity to see something different in the same painting each time it is viewed.

Through May 13, 2018 Unlocking the Vault: Mysteries and Marvels of the Museum Museums typically exhibit only a small percentage of their collections. In the Museum’s vast holdings, specific pieces, for one reason or another, are rarely on exhibit. This exhibition presents a variety of items that are seldom “out of the vault,” and gives the visitor a unique look at why, what, and how museums collect.

April 7 • Little Buckaroos Round-up Let the American Rodeo Gallery help inspire you to compete in our Little Buckaroos Round-up. Put on your favorite cowboy gear and join us for stick-horse barrel races, roping, and more.

May 5 • Cowboy Cooking Cowboys on the move need to be fed often. Drop in and explore Dutch oven cooking in the 21st century.

Demonstrations will include kid-friendly contemporary treats. Before you leave, craft your very own cowboy apron to take home.

June 2 • Spinning and Weaving Considered an essential skill of the past, spinning and weaving helped clothe the pioneer. From early homespun to rugs, weaving produces the material for everyday life.

See spinning and weaving demonstrations and then try your hand at a project of your own.

April 28 • Have Your Cake and Eat it, too!, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., Inspired by the thick, impasto-style works of Theodore Waddell, area pastry chefs release their inner abstract artist and create delectable and sometimes outrageous cakes.

Stroll the gallery to view the culinary creations next to paintings that inspired them. Guests can vote for their favorite cake. At 2:00 p.m., discover which creation “takes the cake” (the people’s choice Angus 130. Theodore Waddell, 1986, oil on canvas, winner). Free to view with Museum 60" x 78" admission plus $5 per ticket at the door to vote and enjoy coffee and cake. $5 per Museum member. Participating Bakers and Bakeries: Platte College, Raspberries and Crème, Johnnie’s Sweet Creations, Rosebeary’s Bakery, Seasoned from Above, and Brown’s Bakery in Midtown.

Explore the mysteries from the vault at the Museum’s first family sleepover!

Trek through the galleries after dark for a fun, hands-on evening of discovery!

Each child makes a craft, gets a button, T-shirt, flashlight, and miner’s helmet.

Bring a treasured object from home for “show and tell.” Watch the film Night at the Museum and before bedtime enjoy the kids' book Another Night at the Museum.

An evening and morning snack is provided, but families are welcome to bring their own food. To register, visit nationalcowboymuseum.org/sleepover.

May 5 • Cowboy Cooking for Families, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Learn the fine art of cowboy cooking in a Dutch oven class designed for parents and kids. Join us for an afternoon of family fun as we prep, cook, and eat some cowboy favorites and 21st century treats, focusing on cooking with Dutch ovens in the backyard. $30 per adult/ child pair with all materials provided; an additional child may be added for $10.

All participants must be 9 years or older.

Happy Father’s Day! Browse the galleries for a variety of 10-minute talks spotlighting various works in the Museum’s temporary exhibitions or permanent collection that dads will enjoy. Kids and Families Through May 31 • Registration Continues for Western Explorers Summer Camp Western Explorers Summer Camp, June 18 – July 27, offers opportunities to learn, play, and create at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum for children ages 8 – 15. Led by experienced teachers, each week-long, small-group session features age-appropriate themes, crafts, games, art projects, snacks, and stories. Campers explore the Museum’s collections, exhibitions, gardens, and trails, which inspires their imaginations and provides the foundation for fun-filled, creative self-expression. All supplies are included in the children’s sessions.

Half-day and full-day sessions offered for five weeks.

Learn the “what” and “why” of select plantings and all that goes into keeping the gardens in prime condition (weather permitting). Enjoy a variety of 10-minute spotlight talks throughout the galleries to introduce different works by contemporary artists associated with the current Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition & Sale, as well as works by Prix de West artists in the Museum’s permanent collection. Free to Museum members and Prix de West patrons, or with Museum admission.

The Museum Store April 14 • Navajo Rug Sale & Silent Auction Third-generation trader Jackson Clark II, owner of the respected Toh-Atin Gallery, showcases more than 100 examples of dazzling colors, patterns, and craftsmanship in contemporary and antique weavings ranging in value from $100 to $10,000. At any time during the Silent Auction individuals may purchase a rug at 20% over the minimum if it does not have an earlier bid. Proceeds from the sale support the Museum’s exhibitions and programs.

April 24 • Nomads of the Plains: American Indian Horse Culture, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Socialize with us after hours for a free K – 12 professional development session at the National Cowboy Museum. Investigate the nomadic lifestyle of the Plains Indian and the revolutionary impact of the horse on native cultures. Free for educators but registration is required by April 17. Courses and Classes June 4 – 7 • Prix de West Workshop: Oil Painting with Gusto!, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Prix de West artist Greg Beecham has painted for more than 40 years. His vision is to “sculpt with paint” – that is, to paint in such a way that there is not only the illusion of dimension, but genuine depth to the paint itself. This oil workshop will explore color, value, texture, edges, Greg Beecham, Vantage Point, Oil, 24" x 36" drawing, and composition and use them to bring unity and beauty to a work of art. $480 per person; $400 per Museum member.

June 11 – 14 • Prix de West Workshop: Birds in Sculpture with Sandy Scott, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

For more than 30 years, Prix de West artist Sandy Scott has instructed bird sculpture and is recognized as one of America’s leading wildlife artists. This workshop will address bird anatomy, the principles of aerodynamics, and how to achieve the illusion of movement in sculptures of birds in flight. $480 per person; $400 per Museum member. Adult Programs April 7 • Murder Mystery Night: Rare and Wondrous Curiosities from the West, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Join us for a Western Murder Mystery and Dinner inspired by the exhibition Unlocking the Vault: Mysteries and Marvels of the Museum. Participate as a speakeasy patron, sleuth, or suspect.

Watch out! You could be accused of the crime. Pizza, popcorn, and cash bar.
