A New Season Awaits! It is my pleasure to welcome you back to live performance with a beautiful new season of ballet programmed by Artistic Director Emerita Karen Kain, an artist and leader I have long admired. After the challenges of the past year and so many months apart, the return to the theatre is bound to be emotional as we take time to reconnect with one another and the artform we all love. Our opening programme taps into the depths of these emotions, with Crystal Pite’s powerful meditation on the fragile beauty of life, Angels’ Atlas, presented with George Balanchine’s iconic Serenade. The balance of the season offers a rich selection of classical and contemporary repertoire, including the long-awaited world premiere of Karen’s brilliant new staging of Swan Lake, new work from Alysa Pires and Siphesihle November, the company premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s After the Rain and the return of John Neumeier’s dramatic A Streetcar Named Desire, Rudolf Nureyev’s opulent The Sleeping Beauty and Kenneth MacMillan’s playful Elite Syncopations. This is a season to cherish and celebrate as an extension of Karen’s unparalleled legacy with The National Ballet of Canada. In January 2022, I will return to my hometown of Toronto to begin my own journey as Artistic Director of this wonderful company. I am so excited to reconnect with the city, to work with the talented artists who give so much to this profession and to meet all of you – our audiences – who make every performance worthwhile. Welcome everyone to this very special season of dance.

Safety Protocols at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts » The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts will only open when it is safe to do so, operating under strict adherence to Ontario Public Health guidelines that include rules regarding venue capacity, physical distancing measures and the implementation of physical barriers where necessary. » In mapping out a safe return to the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, both The National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Opera Company have engaged Get Ready Global, specialists in emergency management and training, to advise and guide all planning for live audience programming. » Rigorous sanitation protocols are in place. » Hand sanitizer is available throughout the venue. » “No touch” sinks are available in all washrooms.

Masks and Vaccinations » Policies around masks and vaccinations are evolving. We are working closely with our government advisors and our colleagues in the performing arts sector to create clear guidelines before the start of the 2021/22 season. We will communicate all policies around the safe return to the theatre with all subscribers and ticket holders before the fall season.

Physically Distanced Seating » At this time, we are hoping that with a successful vaccine roll out by November, physically distanced seating will not be required. However, we will strictly adhere to guidelines from Ontario Public Health and if physically distanced seating is required, subscribers will receive priority. We will clearly communicate with all patrons as this policy unfolds.

Angels’ Atlas & Serenade November 11 – 21, 2021 Crystal Pite’s acclaimed creation for The National Ballet of Canada, Angels’ Atlas, headlines a moving programme to open the 2021/22 season following the longest theatre closure in the company’s history. Groups of dancers swell and coalesce against an ethereal wall of light to present human existence as a state of radiant impermanence, which the body approximates in dance. The global health and social justice crises of the past year lend new power and poignancy to this theme, underscoring both the ephemerality and vitality of life.

Angels’ Atlas is presented with George Balanchine’s Serenade, the first ballet he created in America and one of many he set to the music of Tchaikovsky, in this case the Serenade for Strings in C, Op. 48. The famous opening tableau sets the mood for this solemn and beautiful work, with its ensemble of women drenched in blue light, heads turned, palms raised to the sky.

A Streetcar Named Desire A Ballet by John Neumeier March 2 – 6, 2022 John Neumeier’s adaptation of the Pulitzer Prizewinning play by Tennessee Williams is a gritty psychological portrait of loss, delusion and desire. At its centre is Blanche DuBois, a southern belle who travels from Laurel, Mississippi to her sister’s apartment in New Orleans following her husband’s suicide and the loss of the family plantation. But instead of respite, Blanche is confronted by a brutal, impoverished landscape embodied in her brother-inlaw, Stanley Kowalski, who disrupts her affectations.

Forgoing chronology, the ballet begins where the play ends, with Blanche in an asylum. From here, remembered places and events reveal the extent of Blanche’s demise, with the plantation crumbling along with her aristocratic past and the bed in her sister’s apartment carrying a persistent threat of violence. A ballet in two acts, A Streetcar Named Desire is set to the music of Sergei Prokofiev and Alfred Schnittke.

The Sleeping Beauty March 11 – 20, 2022

Few ballets in the classical repertoire rival the pageantry and technical purity of The Sleeping Beauty, one of Marius Petipa’s three major collaborations with Tchaikovsky. Rudolf Nureyev’s gorgeous adaptation was premiered by The National Ballet of Canada in 1972, accelerating the young company’s artistic growth and bolstering its international reputation for excellence. The familiar story of Princess Aurora, cursed to sleep for 100 years, comes to life in dazzling variations, storybook characters and an expanded role for

Prince Florimund, once performed by Nureyev himself. Much of the action is symbolic, with Princess Aurora heralding a new dawn for a kingdom threatened by Carabosse and her evil entourage. The Sleeping Beauty endures for its music and bravura dancing, which it has in abundance. From the Fairy Variations of the Prologue to Princess Aurora’s famous Rose Adagio and the twinkling Bluebird Pas de Deux, here is some of ballet’s most exacting and memorable choreography.

Elite Syncopations & After the Rain with New Work by Alysa Pires & New Work by Siphesihle November March 23 – 27, 2022 Kenneth MacMillan’s ragtime classic Elite Syncopations anchors this dynamic mixed programme with a lively dancehall scene inspired by the music and social dances of the 1920s. Clad in whimsical hand-painted unitards, the dancers perform with an air of spontaneity, guided by an onstage band playing the songs of Scott Joplin and other favourite composers of the era. The National Ballet is proud to present new work by Choreographic Associate Alysa Pires, who pursues

a dynamic contemporary aesthetic, and by recently promoted Principal Dancer Siphesihle November, who is making his choreographic debut for the company’s mainstage. The programme also features the company premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s sublime After the Rain, which he created for New York City Ballet in 2005. A ballet in two parts, After the Rain is renowned for its final, intimate pas de deux and features the music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.

Swan Lake Directed and Staged by Karen Kain June 10 – 26, 2022 Set to Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, Swan Lake is the pre-eminent classical ballet, beloved the world over for its lyricism, musicality and technical brilliance. Artistic Director Emerita Karen Kain rediscovers the emotional heart of Swan Lake in a new staging that foregrounds the love story of Odette and Prince Siegfried, inspired by Erik Bruhn’s landmark version and her own bold vision. The story unfolds in a timeless, fairy tale space full of beauty and menace, where an evil sorcerer, Rothbart, has condemned Odette to live as a swan by day and a woman by night until a declaration of true love

Sonia Rodriguez In March 2022, Principal Dancer Sonia Rodriguez will retire from The National Ballet of Canada as one of the most versatile and respected artists in the company’s history. Over 32 years of exquisite performances, she has danced the most demanding classical and contemporary works with equal precision and heart, proving time and again her total facility and passion for dance. Sonia has been a generous collaborator throughout her career and has created many roles including the beloved title role in James Kudelka’s Cinderella in 2004. She has been recognized for her enormous contribution to dance both in Canada and in her childhood home of Spain, where she received the Officer’s Cross of the Civil Merit in 2011. Sonia has chosen to give her final performance in the powerful role of Blanche DuBois in John Neumeier’s A Streetcar Named Desire, for which she received the Rolex Dancers First Award in 2017.
