June means different things to different people: the changing of seasons, the warming of weather, the promise of summer vacations to come. But to those in the trailer industry, June also means the return of Trailer Safety Week.

Established by the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers in 2018, the Trailer Safety Week safety education initiative was created to improve the safety of the Nation’s roadways by raising trailer safety awareness through education of end-users, dealers, and manufacturers on safe trailering practices.

The annual nationwide awareness campaign is specifically aimed at: increasing awareness of the importance of being committed to trailer safety; educating end-users about proper trailer maintenance and usage; and creating a stronger partnership and alliance between stakeholders of the industry including trailer dealers, manufacturers, and end-users.

End-users are vastly under-educated on the proper use of trailers, and it is crucial to utilize the connections that dealers and manufacturers have with consumers in order to raise awareness of proper towing techniques and maintenance. A coordinated nationwide effort has been the goal of the industry since its inception.

Improving trailer safety takes the collective effort of industry partners, agencies, and end-users. Trailer Safety Week, which will run from June 5-11 this year, utilizes printed and online resources to guide trailer manufacturers, dealers, traffic safety professionals, and endorsers across the nation in promoting better safety practices.

Trailer Safety Week was created in 2018 as a forum to educate the public on how to properly utilize trailer safety features and comply with safer towing techniques. Many consumers are new to towing trailers, perhaps having purchased their first boat, while others may utilize their trailers infrequently. It is critical to utilize the connections that dealers and manufacturers have with consumers in order to raise awareness of proper towing techniques and maintenance in order to keep America’s roadways safe. In 2021, Trailer Safety Week included the participation of more than 300 allies, champions, and partners, representing industry, law enforcement, state agencies, and more. Since the inception of the initiative, these efforts have reached more than 500,000 individuals across the country. Trailer Safety Week continues to expand its reach, partnering with industry stakeholders to find more ways to educate the public on the importance of proper trailer usage.

With millions of trailers traversing the nation’s roadways every day and being used by businesses, local governments, and individuals for recreational purposes it is crucial to ensure that trailers are being towed safely for the sake of everyone on the roads. As NATM’s Trailer Safety Week enters its fifth year, the industry looks forward to finding new ways to get out their unified message, and expand their reach further across the country. ■
