s the culminating event for a group of divisions that continues to grow in both quality and popularity, Sport Horse Nationals is a destination for any fan of the Arabian athlete. The show graced the Ohio WEC for the second year in a row, and the venue, well known for its beautiful setting and appealing amenities, provided the perfect backdrop for a diverse array of top-quality Arabian and Half-Arabian sport horses. Six days of competition brought out the best across the divisions and delighted fans in the stands.

The leopard-spotted gelding stands out in any crowd, and he was on fire all week, earning three other National Champion titles in the HalfArabian Sport Horse Under Saddle AOTR, Hunter Type ATR and Hunter Type Open divisions, plus several Top Tens. Top Right: Halley Kern and H Sandor H are greeted by trainer Peri Lee Tilghman after their win in the Arabian Sport Horse Under Saddle AOTR Maturity. This wonderful gelding made a splash as a 4-year-old CCF

Abby Weisenberger and Fareed B+/ exit the ring as the National Champions in the Arabian Sport Horse In-Hand Gelding Dressage Type ATH division. The gorgeous grey was the first to go in a field of 36, but he proved memorable enough to remain at the top of the pack, carrying away the roses and tri-color for Abby and trainer Jessica Cole. Fareed B+/ was the only horse Jessica brought to the show, but he made the trip well worthwhile, also garnering several Top Tens both in-hand and under saddle.

Top: Bey Amego is the picture of focus ahead of one of his many Carriage Driving classes. With Gary Yeager at the lines for Jim and Wanda Funk, the purebred bay displayed his immense power and style to earn four Reserve National Champion Carriage Driving titles in the Working, Reinsmanship, Pick Your Route and Timed Obstacles divisions.

The 5-year-old chestnut stallion, who is owned and bred by Jerry Hamilton, flew over the course with form and finesse to secure the title in the Working Hunter 14.2-and-Under division. “Josh” is one of several horses that won National titles for the Hardin family and their clients during the week. They also brought home top results in the over fences classes courtesy of AM Aqaba++/, AM Bedouin Chief and Wittle Prank Star+//.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR HORSE’S PERSONALITY AND YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THEM. “Rocco” is very much a class clown. He has such a fun personality that always keeps us on our toes. He’s still a baby but can really step up to the plate and behave better than some well-seasoned show horses. After two years of partnership, he really would go through re for me. Our bond has grown stronger than I thought possible!

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

My favorite moment at Nationals this year was getting to pilot my baby horse to his rst National roses and doing it in his rst year of the Sport Horse division. It’s so nice to see all the hard work pay off for a horse you truly believe in!

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

I personally love competing at WEC Ohio. The amenities on the grounds are lovely, and being able to stay in the mobile homes makes it so convenient for early mornings and late nights. The facility being a majority indoors is nice for bad weather as well, which we’ve had in years past!

Dan Alexander

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR HORSE’S PERSONALITY AND YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THEM. At the ripe age of 8, JE Statuesque+, “Sugar,” is in her second year on the show scene. We purchased her from Mark Wharton and Quentin Naylor of Peregrine Bloodstock with the intent to be a broodmare. Mark encouraged us to consider showing her before she got busy producing babies. It took a bit, but the “dragon lady” gave way to a very personable, people-centric horse. She still has plenty of re and loves to show off with her tail agged out behind, but she is a willing worker with a big go-button.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT

HORSE NATIONALS?

Actually, we have two favorite moments. The rst was to be the handler in the SHIH ATH classes. Our trainer, Mary Loden, was on the lead for the Reserve National Championship, and she did a great job. Last year, Kelly Bennet was on the lead when Sugar received her rst Reserve National Championship. Both were great; however, the two Top Tens we earned this year as the ATH were even more memorable. Our dream is to achieve what we call the trifecta— the owner, breeder and handler. After our experience in the ring this year, that would be the cherry on top! Our second favorite moment was watching how one of the judges took the time to show a young handler how to position and set up the horse for SHIH. The judge took the time to chat with, encourage and instruct the youngster. For me, this is just one example of what we love about the Sport Horse community. The overall experience is geared to fun, learning and community. My thanks to the judge who was willing to make this true for a young exhibitor.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

WEC is a great facility, with easy access from any direction of travel. The indoor and outdoor arenas are well designed with excellent footing, and the weather is almost a non-issue with all of the covered walkways between all of the barns.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR HORSE’S PERSONALITY AND YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THEM. ES Gamal++++// loves his job. He greets me every morning with a nicker and barely touches his food until after his ride. He wiggles a lot in the cross ties before a workout and then calmly stands in the cross ties after the workout. He is also the social butter y of the farm. Every horse is calmer when in a pasture next to ES Gamal++++//. He greets all the horses as they get turned out and shares a scratch to two over the fence.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

I started the show with a win in Arabian Sport Horse Show Hack ATR and ended the show with a win in Arabian Sport Horse Under Saddle AOTR Jackpot. That was pretty amazing! However, my favorite part of the show was celebrating everyone’s wins in the barn aisle.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

The World Equestrian Center in Ohio is my favorite place to show. It is a long drive from Washington, but the venue is worth the drive. The footing is perfect; the barns are clean and well maintained. The arenas are big, and I love that you can stay under cover if it is raining. There are lots of options for food on the property, and the vendor area is a fun spot to hang out. The beautiful venue really helps to create a positive show experience.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROGRAM AND TRAINING PHILOSOPHY.

My philosophy is honesty and using that ability to gure out the best lane for each horse and rider. Everybody has different goals or visions, and I am blessed that I have been able to achieve that for an array of clients and horses throughout my career. My specialty, besides the breeding program, is xing horses that are at their last show chapter in their lives. I seem to be able to help those horses succeed and be happy doing their jobs again.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

Naturally, one of my favorite moments was my client doing so well and being two-time National Champion in the main arena was de nitely icing on the cake! The ambiance was super nice this year, the staf ng was exceptional, and I really enjoyed the exhibitor’s party at the paddock; it was top-notch and then some!

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

I think we all like and are super appreciative of the venue! It has some neat features, with the home aways, the cabins, and having a lot of covered workspaces. I did greatly appreciate the cleanliness and the security. You can tell that the facility cares so much and has great attention to detail.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROGRAM AND TRAINING PHILOSOPHY.

I pride my training program on its exibility and recreation over the years. I would say the one common thread overall is the constant attention to the physical and mental state of the horses. I have been lucky to have had a wonderful clientele that supports this philosophy as well. One works tirelessly to produce that once-in-a-lifetime performance. The truth is that the horse you are sitting on just wants fair direction, total protection, and to go back to the stall as soon as it is over. They give up everything that’s important to them, so the stars have to be totally aligned for a winning ride to come together. The horse has to be physically healthy and t, and the rider has to be totally focused and recognizable to their horse. It has to be a mental ballet, not a battle. The elements of most classes are relatively simple. Producing a clear message to your horse to perform them in a group of horses is always the challenge. I have always loved to teach. You have to be patiently persistent to inspire a student or horse to commit to a lifetime of learning.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

I was fortunate to have several wonderful moments at SHN! Each horse we showed won a National Championship for the very rst time. It really allows you to relive so many wonderful memories over the years— 40 years, to be exact! It goes by in a blink!!

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

The WEC in Wilmington has been the perfect home for Sport Horse Nationals. The facility has an undeniable sense of community. I applaud AHA for providing us with the opportunity to compete at such a wonderful venue.

Sophia Saunders

TELL

US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR HORSE’S PERSONALITY AND YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THEM.

If you meet “Eli,” you love him. He is sweet and playful. He loves his people and his time outside with his best friend, “Harry.” Almost ve years ago, we bought Eli as a practice horse until my more quali ed Dressage prospect was ready for me. The plan was to use him for a year and sell him since I would not need the two horses. Well, four years and ve disciplines later, we are still a team. SHN 2019 was our rst Nationals, and the bond we developed during that show is unlike any I’ve had with any other horse. He learned to trust me in his most vulnerable moments when everything in him wanted to run away. Today, he still has those moments, but they are few and far between. He has become the best family horse as well. Eli is developing a special bond with my daughter, Ava. They show in the Dressage, In-Hand, and Under Saddle together. As a mama to both of them, it is precious to watch unfold.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

I would have to say that winning my and Eli’s rst Reserve National Championship under saddle is not only my favorite moment of this year’s SHN but of our show career together. He has worked extremely hard for those wins. He earns everything he has received, and I was proud to be the pilot. And while I know that he has no clue whether he wins a ribbon or not or what those ribbons mean, I know the effort he gives, and it’s a feeling that is dif cult to put into words.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

These venues are amazing and beautiful. Other breeds have these great venues and stadiums, so to have spacious, nice-footed rings makes me as an amateur feel like I’m in the big leagues.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR HORSE’S PERSONALITY AND YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THEM. “Stu,” or WT Studebaker++++//, is basically a big dog. He likes giving hugs, playing with people’s hair, and making funny faces to get attention from people walking by his stall. He would like to hang out with his people all day long. Under saddle, he usually takes his job very seriously, thank goodness! “Sonny,” or Solmate+++//, also gures that all attention should be for him and can be something of an overachiever trying to please. We are so lucky to have two great horses to show and enjoy.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

My best moment was Stu and I got hugs and congrats after the Champion announcement from all our team that helped us get to Sport Horse Nationals and folks that cheered us on. Due to COVID and border issues, we have been trying for three years trying to get to the show. It was an emotional moment, for sure.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR HORSE’S PERSONALITY AND YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THEM. This very special mare came along for me after I tragically lost my gelding, “Nate.” I was devastated, and she was patient with me. She thrilled me in the ring and wrapped herself around my heart on the lead. Never had I met such a beautiful creature who just loved to be with me and who could rise up like the wind or cuddle up like a blanket. She tries so hard with every ask during our work together and is patient with me as I learn her language. This mare is my heart horse, my therapy from the world, and my inspiration to get going, to try again, to work harder…and to keep loving.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

My favorite moment was in a training session for our In-Hand class. There were no spectators, we were trotting together, and I was matching her stride for stride. It felt like she lifted me into the air, and we were ying. Her tail was a sail, and you could just tell she was having the best time…so was I.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

I loved the venue. The footing was fabulous, the staff friendly, the show was well organized and accommodating, and the photos were so much fun to see each day!

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR HORSE’S PERSONALITY AND YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THEM.

My current ride, “Dolly,” is one of the most incredibly intelligent and talented horses I have had the honor to partner with! We have been a team for just over a year and have made so much progress. She is so rewarding and humbling, always pushing me to be a better rider. Dolly is the “queen” and loves being the center of attention, loves being scratched on her belly, and she loves showing off for crowds, especially when she gets them clapping and cheering. Her intelligence and communication are so rewarding and has made us an incredible team. I can tell you what she’s feeling and thinking by an expression, and her trust in me has grown with our time together.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

It’s so hard to pick a favorite moment! We had such a fantastic week, seeing our friends and family. Watching our friends and family win big with their horses. But the highlight had to be our little Rachel Priest (12 years old) handling our young horse, Bad Intentions+, (6 years old), in her rst and second Nationals classes ever and then winning the National Championship and Supreme National Championship! To have our two “kids” take home such big wins at Rachel’s rst Nationals is unparalleled!

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

We love the WEC Ohio Venue! The weather is always wonderful. The home aways and cabins are super convenient. It’s truly a facility that was designed with the horse and rider in mind. Fantastic arenas, mats everywhere the horses walk and beautiful stalls. The staff does a fantastic job keeping the facility clean and tidy throughout whole show and are respectful of the horses. The turnout pens are lovely for those accessing them. We couldn’t rave more about our time there. Additionally, the AHA staff listens and works so hard at making the show run smoothly and having a setup that works for all our rings. It’s a show, but it’s also a vacation!

Barb Suvaka

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BREEDING PROGRAM AND PHILOSOPHY.

I am a small breeder, but over time have learned a lot about breeding and showing. Owning a stallion the caliber of “Tux” has been such an amazing adventure. I knew from the beginning when he was a foal that he was very nice, but had no idea that he would develop into a ve-time National Champion. He’s taught me that breeding isn’t just about having a beautiful horse with nice conformation, it’s about having a beautiful horse that is mentally and physically capable of competing in both In-Hand and Performance; in this case, it was FEI-level Dressage. He’s one of very few stallions to accomplish this. I believe that everyone looking to breed their mare should look at what the stallion has accomplished in Performance and what he is like mentally. Having a good-performing horse with a great mind is what we all should be breeding for. I don’t breed for any speci c specialty. For me, it’s about breeding for a horse with balanced conformation, great athleticism and a great mind. Once you have that, you can do just about anything with your horse.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

This year’s Nationals were phenomenal for me and for my breeding program. I’d have to say my absolute favorite moment was winning a National Championship with my 5-yearold gelding, Smokin Thyme ABA, who is out of Tux’s full sister. My other favorite moments were when two of Tux’s foals won National Championships, two won Reserve National Championships, and all eight of them won at least one Top Ten.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

I think WEC is a wonderful venue for our National show. I’ve shown at SHN since 2013, so I have been at several of the venues. Balmoral in Crete was the rst time the venue actually felt like a National show to me. Using WEC after Balmoral was wonderful. WEC de nitely feels like a National venue and is easy to navigate. Plus, being able to have everything indoors is so nice. I hope AHA continues to use a venue of this caliber going forward.

Amy Miller

A PASSION FOR SUCCESS

Sport Horse Nationals hosted many impressive horse-and-rider combinations this year, with exhibitors all agreeing that the competition was world-class. Among the most splendid of these teams was Amy Miller with Jan Roeder’s striking Half-Arabian, Aristocrat CD+//. Over their nearly 10 years of partnership, Amy has taken this gelding from a green 3-year-old to a game Grand Prix horse, taking home four sets of Champion roses from all four classes they entered at Sport Horse Nationals. In addition to her successes with “Tex,” Amy also took Andreas Klohnen and Katherine Ellis’s Kishmir MFA+++// to the top of the Half-Arabian Training and First Level Dressage divisions, besting over 40 horses and leaving Ohio undefeated with both of her equine partners. Amy’s students brought home a total

that the natural agility and intelligence of the Arabian breed makes them well-suited to Dressage, from Training Level to Grand Prix. “Quickness to the aids and quickness in the mind are the only way to make those [Grand Prix] movements happen. How wonderful to let the dressage tests bring these qualities in the Arabian horses to the forefront.”

Amy nds the camaraderie of Arabian shows to be something that sets the breed apart. “This year, I met people from Florida, Pennsylvania, North Dakota and Texas. I would have never met them or have had a chance to share horse stories with them without Sport Horse Nationals.” She and her clients also appreciate the unique classes offered at Sport Horse Nationals, including Sport Horse Under Saddle and Sport Horse Show Hack. “Riding in the ring with 15 other horses, navigating traf c, performing transitions on demand, and planning ring strategy so we stay in the judges’ view – these challenges often prove to me how rideable dressage training has made my horses,” Amy explains, articulating exactly what makes the Sport Horse division special to so many. “I appreciate that the other disciplines have no hesitation to invite us into their realms. After watching the jumper classes, with their tight inside turns, I decided that Tex could de nitely complete his pirouettes with more power and expression!”

Amy also takes pride in coaching her students to top titles. Hannah Finch of HF Sport Horses has been working with Amy for four years, and Amy’s guidance has helped the young trainer achieve several National titles in the irons of horses owned and bred by Laughing Dog Ranch. She also began several new teaching partnerships at Sport Horse Nationals and refers to the show as a unique, week-long learning opportunity. “I enjoyed having a dedicated week of coaching and learning with my students, and it was so much fun to celebrate the advancements for everyone,” Amy expresses. “Being at Sport Horse Nationals has the bene t of showing, but also the bene t of an amazing time of intense learning, complete with roses and honor rounds.”

of six Champion and reserve garlands, as well as 21 Top Ten ribbons.

A top FEI and USEF Dressage trainer, Amy has long had an af nity for Arabians and always keeps several in her training barn. As a young child, Amy trekked across the hills and creek beds behind her home aboard an Arabian pony before taking to the irons of another Arabian, Dorzan, to try her skill over fences. As she transitioned to Dressage, Amy never thought to fully abandon her favorite breed in favor of the more popular Warmblood Dressage prospects. “They’re good horses,” she emphasizes. “A good horse with heart, try and a tremendous work ethic will always be special to me. Dressage requires all of those qualities, as well as a quick mind to sort out complicated exercises.” She goes on to explain

Looking forward, Amy hopes to see more partnerships between breeders and trainers. “Teaming breeders with young horse trainers gives the special opportunity to watch young horses demonstrate their potential in the ABA Breeder’s Sweepstakes Sport Horse In-Hand classes and then develop through the existing pipeline, moving to Junior Horse classes under saddle and then on through the upper levels,” notes Amy. For her personal program, she looks forward to teaching monthly clinics, connecting with fellow trainers, and continuing to carefully develop her string of training horses and students at their new home, WilMar Equestrian Center. She is already formulating her plan to take “Tex” and Kishmir MFA+++// to the next level next year. “I came home with renewed energy to prepare for next year! It is time for Aristocrat CD +// to start working on freestyle. Kishmir MFA+++// has started working on all of the movements for the next levels.” With her intentional process of laying a solid foundation for her students and horses, as well as her open mind to always keep learning and developing personally, Amy’s passion for success both in and out of the show ring is certainly paying off.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR HORSE’S PERSONALITY AND YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THEM.

All four horses have such unique and different personalities, you can’t just use one word to describe any of them!

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

My favorite moment at SHN this year was getting a Top Ten with my horse, Standing Oration++. My trainer and I have worked really hard on making us a team, so it was very rewarding.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

One of our favorite places to show! Always clean and a lot of things to do!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROGRAM AND TRAINING PHILOSOPHY.

I come from the open hunter/jumper world but started competing on the Arabian circuit about eight years ago. My main philosophy in training is focusing on the little things and letting the littles build to be the big things. I never had huge aspirations to be a Grand Prix show jumper or a multi-National Champion, but I found myself here by just trying to be a little bit better every day. I think that’s the great equality of our sport. Not everyone can buy a high-quality horse, but everyone can make themselves and their horse a little better every day. That drive to always push my riding and my clients’ riding without overly stressing about the end game has found us with the success of our wildest dreams!

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

Sport Horse Nationals is very special in its camaraderie, and I always enjoy seeing my friends and peers succeed. I think my favorite moment this year was my win in the Beginner Novice Combined Test with GG Power And Fame++++//. I’ve spent a lot of my time and resources trying to strengthen my dressage skills, and it was wonderful to have that payoff with a great dressage score. To then go in and jump double clear to clinch the victory was such a great feeling. I’ve had “Junior” in my program for almost four years now on and off, and we are really starting to feel like a partnership, so it was a special win to feel him try so hard for me.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

We love WEC! We have one of the furthest drives, 3600 miles round trip, and we always say we will happily make it every year to show here. The facility is top-notch, the weather is always great, and the housing options really make the trip worth it. After a long day of showing, the ability to just drive across the street to shower and sleep is amazing. It’s our favorite show of the year.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROGRAM AND TRAINING PHILOSOPHY.

My program is really based on each individual horse’s needs. I bring them along at their own pace and strive for longevity of the horse, both in their performance careers and their overall health. Our sport horses mainly compete in Dressage, Sport Horse Under Saddle and In-Hand. We also have horses that compete in the main ring—Hunter, Western and Country English Pleasure.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

I really enjoyed the jog for the ABS Young Horse Dressage Incentive. It was very well thought out and the show committee made it an enjoyable event. It’s nice to be able to look at these young prospects during the jog and then watch them under saddle the next day.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

I absolutely love the World Equestrian Center in Ohio, it’s my favorite venue to show at! It has such an enjoyable, inviting feel about it. The footing is world class, and there is no “bad” place to ride or work your horses. The atmosphere is extremely rider-and-family-friendly, while also giving the exhibitors and spectators the prestigious feel of a National-level show.

I learned at a young age I wanted to be the kind of trainer that was hands-on in every part of the day-to-day. I have many horses on the property but run a very small staff of myself and family. I feel this helps me know my horses inside and out and allows me to be able to pick up on the smallest change in their personality or behavior. Building a trusting relationship on the ground with each horse is the backbone of my program. I train with each horse at their individual learning speed and not against them. I have a simple philosophy that a solid and trusting foundation leads to a solid, safe and trusting lifetime partner. As long as all the building blocks are laid with consistency, each horse will grow to their full potential. I believe you never stop learning. I show all aspects of Sport Horse, with Western Dressage as the one specialty in my program. While Dressage was never my rst career path as a trainer, it has made me a better trainer and instructor. I started with Western Dressage when it rst started with the reining horses I had in training and just fell in love with it, never looking back. I enjoy tting the young horses for SHIH, showing in the SHUS, and even training the Classical Dressage horse.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SHN?

I have so many wonderful memories at this year’s SHN; it is hard to narrow it down to one moment. While the wins help make the show successful, I have never felt that the wins alone make the show. I love to watch and help my clients succeed no matter what type of win that is. If it wasn’t for my clients’ support, we as a family wouldn’t have had the success and memories that we did.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

I think WEC is a fabulous venue to host Sport Horse Nationals. Moving to WEC has brought another level of feel to our Nationals; it feels and looks like you are at a National event. There are so many different arenas to work and compete in, all with fabulous footing, and the option of having different places to stay on the grounds makes it so easy. Having the paddocks available is a great addition to the platinum package, as well as the meals prepared at the Paddock Club.

William Oakley & VM Burberry

show with a new horse in under one year is lofty for any exhibitor, especially for an individual with little formal training. However, William began his search for the perfect equine partner, undaunted by the enormous task he had set before himself.

While perusing ads online, William came across a stunning grey lly who was already a Regional Champion in her 3-year-old year. He passed the mare by, knowing she was likely out of his budget but inquired with her owner, Ellie Troutman, about two geldings she was also offering for sale. On his visit to try both geldings, William passed a stall and saw the little grey mare, WM Burberry, standing quietly as if she’d been waiting for him. He couldn’t help but ask to try her, and the decision to purchase her was made before William ever swung a leg over her. “’Burberry’ is a special mare that has the biggest heart and loves to give it her all,” William says of his beloved mare. “She also carries her heart on her sleeve and gets her feelings hurt if you show disappointment in her.” He chose to keep Burberry in training with Linna Sewell, who had started the lly. “Linna later admitted that she cried after our phone call because she loved Burberry so much and was so excited that she was going to get to continue the training,” William remembers.

William’s path as a horse owner began with some disappointment, as Linna informed him almost immediately that he and Burberry were not ready for each other quite yet. “At the time, it was a hard pill to swallow, but I knew she was right. I needed to learn how to ride a horse before I could ever imagine showing one,” he says. For four months, William took lessons, working diligently to grow his skill as a horseman while Linna worked to prepare Burberry as an amateur mount. William was nally able to show his horse for the rst time in March 2022, which began a show season that William describes as a roller coaster. The duo gathered several blue ribbons but got the gate just as many times. Just before his rst Regional competition, William was ready to throw in the towel for good, but he still persevered. The effort certainly paid off, as he and Burberry took a Top Five victory pass at Region 13.

The greatest thrill of National competition is the moment that every step of the journey—the great rides, tough days, and every high and low in between—comes together, culminating in a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Sport Horse Nationals rst-timer William Oakley knows this feeling well after celebrating three Top Ten ribbons with his young mare, WM Burberry, and trainer Linna Sewell.

William rst set his foot in a stirrup just three years ago on a trail ride with longtime Arabian enthusiast David Jones. Though his rst ride ended

with William on the ground and David’s mare, Harmony, peering down at him quizzically, he was hooked. In 2021, after countless more trail rides, David took William to watch Sport Horse Nationals, and William knew he had found his calling. “I sat on the rail in awe of every class going around the ring while the feeling inside my gut grew stronger and stronger: ‘This is what I want to do.’” From that moment, William had a clear plan: to buy his own Arabian and be ready to show at Sport Horse Nationals 2022. The goal of preparing for a National

When the time came to trot into the ring at his rst National event, William was unconcerned about making his cut. His only goal was to present his mare to the best of his ability, and he certainly succeeded, enjoying what he describes as the best ride of his life. “I think I will forever chase that feeling of riding a horse in a show ring at the national level,” William elaborates. Linna took the reins of the game mare, coming away with three Top Ten ribbons in Arabian Sport Horse Under Saddle Dressage Type, Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior Horse Dressage Type, and Training Level Dressage. After every victory pass, William met his beloved mare at the gate, congratulating her with a hug around her neck.

The future is bright for William and Burberry, who plan to spend the winter working diligently together to complete their rst Dressage test in the spring. William plans to continue improving his equitation and seat in order to be the best possible partner for Burberry. Sport Horse Nationals 2023 is already a goal for the pair, who have proven that with hard work, achieving any dream is possible.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHY YOU LOVE THE ARABIAN SPORT HORSE.

My favorite thing about the breed is how willing they are to do their jobs. They are good to train and very athletic, making it possible for them to do many disciplines. Overall, my heart stays with the Hunter/Jumpers, but I also enjoy the Country Pleasure, English Show Hack and the Working Western disciplines.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

My favorite moment was winning the Green Hunter Derby with my Junior horse, El Incendio++/. He is a Roland Lewis-bred horse, with Magico++++// being the sire. I have been the one to bring him along in his jumping career, and I am very excited for his future.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

Being from California, it is a very different show experience with everything besides our jump arena inside. Outside, the jumps are beautiful, and the arena makes for amazing photos.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHY YOU LOVE THE ARABIAN SPORT HORSE.

I love Arabians because they are not only beautiful but are also so smart and de nitely know their job. My favorite divisions are Hunter/Jumpers and Saddle Seat, but I love to watch Reining and Carriage Driving.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

My favorite moment from Sport Horse Nationals 2022 was the work-off from the Equitation Over Fences because it is fun and different from a regular Hunter Over Fences class. And it’s very challenging!

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

I think that WEC Ohio is beautiful, and we get great weather every year. I especially love riding through the ride-up Starbucks, and the amazing photos that are taken throughout the show.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROGRAM AND TRAINING PHILOSOPHY.

At Long Shot Farm, we strongly believe in combining classical principles with traditional Western horsemanship to create safe, sound, pleasurable and versatile horses. Working with concepts presented in the classical training scale can improve every horse, no matter its profession or pedigree. Western Dressage is more than a competition or discipline. Western Dressage is a progressive education system that provides a foundation for everything we do with our horses. Whether in Reining, Ranch, games or Trail, Western Dressage teaches the horse to carry himself properly to enhance physical health and wellness. The variety of options for participation promotes mental health and a positive partnership between horse and rider. We are proud to promote this growing discipline and grateful to be able to represent Western Dressage at Sport Horse Nationals.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

I was grateful to be at SHN as a family; two sisters riding, and mom with us to cheer us on!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROGRAM AND TRAINING PHILOSOPHY.

We do have a specialty we breed for. This is a foal that we know will be a mature future Performance Sport Horse, that is amateur-friendly and professional quality, and can be shown on the Open and/or breed circuit, increasing their value.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

There was not one speci c moment, yet many that were our favorite at this year’s SHN. The moments that were our favorite were to see ‘E’ owners smiles after their kids’ or grandkids’ classes were called and they were either Top Ten or Reserve National Champions!

The venue is wonderful! Great rings, stalls, location and accommodations for exhibitors, visitors, and more. We look forward to going back next year to watch the ‘E’ kids and have plans to bring our own ‘E’ kids as well!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BREEDING PROGRAM AND PHILOSOPHY. We strive to breed horses that are good-minded, trainable athletes without sacri cing conformation or beauty. Our goal is to produce quality amateur and youth horses that can reach the highest levels in dressage and the sport horse arena.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AT THIS YEAR’S SPORT HORSE NATIONALS?

I don’t know that I have any one favorite moment. The show was very well run and organized. I know it takes a village to pull off a show of that magnitude and have it go smoothly. The barn party night was a lot of fun; it was fun meeting new people. I also loved the Wine for a Nine award offered in dressage this year. They are constantly improving the show every year with new and fun activities.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VENUE?

I love the venue. It is quite a hike for me as I am north of Seattle, Washington. However, it is worth the drive to get to compete at such a high-class facility. The staff is great, everything is clean and organized, great footing. Of course, the ride-through Starbucks is awesome!
