About Me My name is Nathan Matthew Petty I am currently completing a Bachelor of Architectural Design at The University of Queensland. In my spare time, I love being outdoors with my dog, hiking or playing guitar with my mates.

Music was my first creative interest; before playing guitar I hadn’t considered options outside of my family's career path in engineering. For me, architecture has been the balance between methodical problem solving and creative expression that I’m looking for out of life.

“ABORIGINAL ARCHITECTURE [IS A] BUILDING WHICH IN SOME WAY GENERATES AN ABORIGINAL IDENTITY ITSELF” (Paul Memmott & Joseph Reser, Design Consepts & Processes for Public Aboriginal Architecture)

The Lardil people are the traditional custodians of Kunhanhaa, which is now known as Mornington Island Island. This remote island houses one of the oldest Indigenous art centres and is home to some of Australia's most renowned artists, including Sally Gabori. I defined three criteria that guided the development of this design:

Ensuring Future Usecase I aimed to design the structure to be an assembly of standardized parts. I used steel portal framing as a prefabricated system for its ability to be transported, assembled, or modified anywhere without the need for construction expertise. I produced sketches, a facade model and finally perspective details in order to develop and document these ideas.

This project is a flexible-use bonsai studio in the backyard of an existing West End Queenslander. The space transforms into a secondary dwelling for the owner’s parents, providing a space to connect over the multi-generational art of bonsai.

This project is a re-development of a 9-story office building in Brisbane.

Sequencing of Space The plan was divided to sequence the activities, down the slope of the site. This introduces a journey that delineates the creation process.

Pots are thrown and fired in the undercroft, the bonsai are potted in the pavilion and are then displayed in front of the tile screen wall.

Traditional Engawa The program is separated by two changes in height that follow the site's southerly fall. These changes in height are designed as ‘engawa’ - a traditional raised Japanese porch, that provides a seat from which to view the garden.

Activating & Deactivating the Boundary The design needed to be perceived as a public space but have the ability to become enclosed for private use. A permeable walkway was designed to run along the boundary - hugging the courtyard. Sliding panels could then either enclose the space or open it to the public.

This system bridges the public and private realms. When closed, the panels visually connect the private house to the pavilion and, when opened, provide transparency indicating public access.

The DA's proposed fit-out was analysed against a few performance metrics. The required luminance per task was analysed so that access to daylight could be optimized. The brief required the implementation of natural ventilation strategies. Atriums and an openable facade were utilized to induce cross-ventilation.

Unitized Curtain Wall System

First Step THE CURTAIN WALL HANGERS ARE ALIGNED USING THE UNISTRUT CHANNELS THAT ARE EMBEDED IN THE FLOOR PLATE TO ENSURE THE CURTAIN WALL PANNELS ARE INSTALLED FLUSH

Second Step AS A CURTAIN WALL PANNEL IS CRANED ONTO THE HANGERS, A TRADESPERSON ALIGNS THE PANNEL WITH THE LAST USING THE UNITIZATION POCKETS. THE VERTICAL MULLIONS ARE BOLTED TOGETHER AS EACH PANNEL IS INSTALLED.

Third Step THE CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM IS ASSEMBLED PANNEL

BY PANNEL STARTING AT THE LOWEST LEVEL AND FINISHING AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. UNITIZED CURTAIN WALL SYSTEMS CAN BE QUICKKY ASSEMBLY ON-SITE , WHICH IS CRUCIAL FOR REDUCING CONSTRUCTION TIME AND LABOR COSTS.

The facade was designed as a unitized system to reduce construction costs and increase speed. These two exploded drawings detail the assembly of the curtain wall and facade system respectively. The facade was designed as an assemblage of standardized components to further reduce the manufacturing time.

First Step TWO STANLESS STEEL ANGLES ARE BOLTED TOGETHER THROUGH THE VERICAL FACADE SHADE (WHICH IS A COMPONENT OF THE CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM) TO MAKE A HORIZONTAL BEAM

Second Step STANLESS STEEL ANGLES ARE THEN BOLTED TO THE HORIZONTAL BEAMS TO SUPPORT THE WIRE MESH FACADE, THE HORIZONTAL SHADING AND THE MAINTANENCE WALKWAY GRID.

Third Step THE WIRE MESH FACADE, THE HORIZONTAL SHADING AND THE MAINTANENCE WALKWAY GRID ARE BOLTED TO COMPLETE THE FACADE SYSTEM

About The Design & Fabrication I wanted to design something that could be displayed. Through my efforts to contextualize the design, it took on many of the aesthetic qualities of her Manly waterfront house.

Each aluminium triangle foot was three hand-bent plates that were welded together and powder-coated to achieve the seamless look.

They lift the timber body off the ground and also act as handles.

The perforated inserts centre the lid and have cutouts to allow photos to be flicked through without the need to remove them.

The nameplate was powder coated so that I could engrave through the finish and expose the aluminium beneath
