Having agriculture production as the primary economic focus together with requiring densification, Nansha, an artificial island where its existing condition is vulnerable to the sea level rise and the insurgent of dirty water from the nearby cargo port becomes urgent for protection. A set of walls expand along the cross sections of the island serve as multiple purposes levee system for foundation and framework. Over time, a massive rainwater harvesting double roofs grow atop of the wall to capture clean, fresh water for

agriculture and residential uses. The core concept can be described as redefining, refurbish, and resilient. Redefine: reorganize the agriculture land division to maximize agriculture production and densification. New crops are introduced, such as seaweed farming, seaweed production, and new housing to solve economic and densification issues. Refurbish: renew per-existing horizontal farming into vertical

farming to maximize productivity. Canals remain as the primary circulation and transportation. Resilient: Wetlands is placed in between the walls are introduced to trap sediment to stabilize the land, to keep dirty water from moving inward, and to attract wildlife creating a balance between nature, human and the rise of the sea level.

The rolling city challenges the issue in the city of Oakland, the problem with housing, economic and the separation of the city interconnection by an 80 feet wide highway. This highway separation for a decade has divided the city into two halves, the working district and the waterfront district. As a modern city, we want to blur this fine line to open up to reconnect and to activate the potential benefits the city has been missing. Five distinct sites along the highway associated with five hot spots that currently is and will become the primary intersection of the city connectivity,

from variety type of public transportations (BART, Perry, Buses and most importantly, the gateway that connects busy up speed working district with the complimentary relaxing waterfront.

The concept of the project is to create a spatial clarity between music production and performance. Base on the idea of a sound isolation system, the music production space is placed below ground to sperate itself from the above performance spaces. A public zone is created on the ground level to emphasize this clarification further.

At a larger scale, this public zone also works as a site activator to draw public attention to this industrial neighborhood of the Art district. The earlier formal operation of the building is to create an L shape axis from cropping and attaching geometry to the site extrusion. The intersection of the axis at the same time become the intersection between public and private,

production and performance. The project has a direct formal relationship to the context of the site. Every formal move, spatial division, the organization is integrated from the site typology such as the projection of the LA river, the site offset, and the view of downtown LA.

The initial concept of the project is based on a zigzag order where elements within a body are duplicated alternatively repeated over and over again. The zigzag not only shown in the section but also imply in the organization of alternative parts shown on plans. Zigzag order or rather an alternation starts from a single bar, where single loaded dormitory changed to double loaded dormitory as the direction

turns. The bars are then duplicated, rotated and duplicated upward again to preserved the alteration through out the entire building. The black box theater itself is a double loaded. To preserve the concept of a zigzag, the theater is imported into one of the double-loaded dormitories to create wholeness Circulation within one bar goes up to one level and start going down at the intersection with the alternative bar.

CIRCULATION DIAGRAM

The organization of space across the floor plans is quite identical. Lounges are placed at the end of each bar; shared bathroom are distributed evenly at each corner to provide short and even access for residents. The building’s program is divided into the public, semipublic and private area. Public includes theater, lobby, and backstage, while semi-public provides primary exits at the end of each bar such as stair core, elevations, lounges and communal area. The rest of the building is private dormitories.

Phase 1: the rotated cube examines various ways of cutting an object. As an exploration of formal differences developed by a simple change of rotation. A two dimensional gridded cut plan is applied on the two elevations of a cube. After each operation, the cut plan is rotated at an angle of 10-degree, from 00-degree to 90-degree.

Phase 2: From rotated cubes, by cutting a solid object with a gridded cut plan, the original solid cube transforms into a three dimensional distorted grid structure. At a bigger scale, this structure could be treated as miss-using frames that are not used as structural support. Base on the level of complexity and stability, a 30-degree angle rotated cube is selectively constructed into an office building where the volume inside a single frame is large enough to form a usable space.

The entire building is cut 1/3 from below to rest on the ground and sheared at the center to divide the building into two separate portions which connected at their shoulders. Other than the spatial division within each large frame, the building interior is organized by an invisible grid plan that generated by the actual framework imported to support the entire structure. “Balloon Animal comprises of inert material, of plaster cast into an elastic media. This “balloon animal” is without conviction, the direct result of an exothermic chemical reaction in which dry plaster powder mixed with water re-forms into gypsum, a process that induces the liquid mixture to take on the form of whatever container in which it happens to reside as it solidifies. While this body is lifeless, it may be seen to exhibit the motion, direction, and gesture of the forces that shape it leaves their imprint.”

THE CONFIGURABLE JIG a device that aids in structuring a situation in which plaster is cast using an elastic vessel. This jig is designed to explore the flexibility of form from pushing and twisting forces. There are three operations being performed.


Inspired by the study of Monolithic architecture, Duplicated Shell is developed to challenge the part and whole relationship within a body of an object. The entire object represents one entity while the object itself is created out of multiple parts, distorted cubes. Duplicated Shell promotes the exterior simplicity while celebrating the interior complexity of a monolithic object.

1. The body is filled with extrusions influenced by the projection of twodimensional bitmap from the outer shell. 2. The outer shell is scaled duplicated at the central axis to form the inner shell. 3. The inner shell is rotated along the central axis. 4. The inner shell also works as the framework to crop away existing extrusions. 5. Voice started to develop.
