The Life of: Christian Von Koenigsegg

• Like many young men, Christian von Koenigsegg was fascinated by machinery as a boy. He even went so far as to dream about creating his perfect sports car. In stark contrast to the rest of us, however, Christian actually went ahead and turned that dream into reality – at just 22 years of age.

• With extraordinary determination and vision, Christian explored the limits of both technology and innovation to create the Supercar of his dreams – the Koenigsegg CC. The Koenigsegg CC was the manifestation of a dream and its successful completion gave Christian the courage to continue, and to share his quest for perfection with others. Thus, the car company that bears his name was born.

• The story of Koenigsegg is as fascinating and unique as the cars themselves. Christian was only 5 years old when he first saw a stop-motion film from Norway about a bicycle repairman who builds his own racing car. The film must have made an impression, as a young Christian grew up dreaming of creating the perfect sports car. Some 17 years later, and against all odds, he did just that.

• Christian showed an early interest in design and enjoyed the challenges posed by discovering new technical solutions. As a young boy, he dismantled video recorders and toasters, just to see how they worked and whether they could be improved.

• As a teenager, he was known as the best moped tuner in town and in the early 1990’s, around his 18th birthday, Christian began to work more seriously with technical innovation and came up with some interesting ideas.

• One of the innovations was called the Chip Player. He believed that one day, computer memory chips would be able to store an entire CD’s worth of data and that it would probably be a cheaper way to buy and store music. He conducted some patent searches for a musical device that would play chips instead of discs. In the end, however, no one seemed interested in the idea, so Christian moved on, not realizing that a few years later his idea would become the norm.

• In 1991, he invented a new solution for joining floor planks together without adhesive or nails. He called it Click, as the profile enabled the planks to simply click together. Christian presented this technology to his father-in-law in Belgium, who ran a flooring factory. He rejected the idea, saying that if it was viable, someone would have come up with it a long time ago.

Christian then showed the concept to a few other floor manufacturers who also dismissed it. In 1995, a Belgian and a Swedish company patented the exact same solution as Christian’s Click floor – they even called it Click! This innovation has now turned into a multi-billion dollar industry…

CC PROTOTYPE

In 1994 Christian and his team took inspiration from the Ferrari F40 and McLaren F1 to create a minimalistic, pure, no nonsense Supercar with a Swedish twist to it.

Christian understood that if features, design and performance did not only match but in many ways exceeded the existing Supercars, no one would look twice at a startup car company from Sweden.

Apart from having a great chassis with great handling from the get go, the CC featured the unique Koenigsegg detachable and storable roof, that was fully integrated in the coupe shape. This was truly unique among supercars at this time. Remember this was before the F50 and the Carrera GT and neither of these cars did a very good job at making the car look like a perfect coupe with the roof on like the CC, and the F50 could not even store the roof in the car.

The CC chassis floor pan was already sandwiched Carbon at this time and so was the whole body. Apart from this extensive space frame technology with chromo molybdenium tubes were used to create the rest of the chassis, in combination with a steel monocoque design, that later gave inspiration to the full carbon monocoque chassis that went into production.

The CC was also the first Koenigsegg to feature the unique dihedral door actuation mechanism that proved both practical and truly unique. A mechanism that has defined the brand and set it apart from everyone else. The scaling up of the shape of the first CC prototype from design model to real car, was done completely by hand, by Christian and his team and in a hurry – hence the car looked a bit rough around the edges and the proportions was a bit off. But the CC served its purpose as a testing mule, getting attention and showing the promise of the startup company as, the CC was great to drive.

The engine was a standard Audi 4.2 V8 with and Audi transaxle connected to it.

This engine was chosen as a Christian thought it could be a good base for a more tuned version going towards production. However Koenigsegg never managed to strike a supply deal with Audi so Koenigsegg had to look for other solutions going towards production.

CCX

Koenigsegg’s aim with the CCX Edition was to deliver superior performance – on the track, in a straight line and on your favorite winding road – and to do so in supreme style and comfort.

The CCX Edition was only produced in two examples. It featured a number of specifications that were unique to the model, including its 4.8 liter engine, 11 spoke wheels, a unique rear wing, unique side winglets, etc.

This combination of unique equipment, along with the superb fit and finish of the Koenigsegg visible carbon body and chassis construction, truly makes the CCX Edition an automotive artwork without peer.

AGERA

Agera means “to take action” in Swedish. It is also short for the ancient Greek word Ageratos which means “ageless”. These are both suitable descriptors for this incredible and beautiful machine.

The CCX and CCXR were difficult cars to follow as their performance and functionality remains very competitive. Still, there is always room for change and improvement.

So Koenigsegg came up with a new interior, featuring the now famous ‘ghost’ lighting system, where all interior symbols are created with laser etched, virtually invisible nano-holes through the aluminum panels and buttons.

Furthermore, the Agera featured a unique 7 speed transmission with a E-diff and wet clutch functionality developed by Koenigsegg, a transmission that truly enhanced performance and handling.

The Agera was the first model to feature the Koenigsegg developed VGR wheels. They are real air turbines, increasing the downforce of the car by measurable amounts and improving brake cooling. All four wheels are individual so that turbine blades always face the correct direction for extraction.

Given that the offset and width is different front to rear, all four wheels have their own unique design. The VGR wheels are forged and then fully machined to the final shape. All excess material is removed during the forging and machining process, thus minimizing weight whilst displaying outstanding levels of stiffness.

The CCX and CCXR both had supercharged engines, which at the time was the superior solution.

However, turbo technology had come a long way and the downside of turbo lag was starting to become almost nonexistent, if engineered properly.

The problem with turbo engines, high power and emission control was that the catalytic converters caused a lot of back pressure at high power levels. These back pressures were elevated through the turbo and into the exhaust ports of the engine, thereby causing what is called hot EGR. Hot EGR is a source for detonation knocking. To alleviate this problem, Christian came up with an ingenious solution by placing the precat behind the waste gate instead of the turbo, thereby reducing the back pressure with a factor of 3. This simple solution gave 300 hp extra power and was a worthy successor of the Rocket cat invented and developed by Christian almost 10 years earlier. It also meant that the Agera could deliver torque, power and response to match much larger engines at a fraction of their weight, making it extremely competitive.

The Agera Became the 2010 Top Gear Hypercar of the Year.

One:1

The One:1 was introduced in 2014. Seven examples, including one prototype, were built during 2014 and 2015.

This was one of the most exclusive production car programs ever envisaged in the car industry.

The hp-to-kg curb weight ratio is an astonishing 1:1. This is the “dream” equation, previously thought impossible when it comes to fully road legal and usable sports cars.

The One:1 is the first homologated production car in the world with one Megawatt of power, thereby making it the world´s first series produced Megacar.

Thus, the name One:1.

The One:1 truly raised the performance bar. The One:1 featured new, unique solutions that enhance track performance without compromising top speed or everyday usability, with a stunning visual appearance to go with it.

Examples of features: unique track-optimized aero winglets, extended venturi tunnels and side splitters, LeMans inspired active wing configuration and optimized active under trim air management. Large air vents for improved cooling, roof air scoop to support the 1 Megawatt of power, 8250 RPM rev limit, complemented with custom-made Michelin Cup Tires, upgraded rear Triplex suspension with carbon bevel springs and active shock absorbers and ride height, combined with upgraded revolutionary Koenigsegg Aircore carbon fiber wheels.

Koenigsegg was the first extreme car manufacturer to take steps toward green technology with the release of the biofuel CCXR in 2007. The One:1, a sibling of the highly competitive Agera R, follows in the footsteps of the CCXR as it also runs on E85 biofuel, race fuel or normal gasoline.

Regera

The heart and soul of every Koenigsegg is its Internal Combustion Engine – the ICE. The ICE of the Regera follows the path of its siblings, the proven and extremely reliable Koenigsegg dry-sump twin turbo, DOHC, 5.0 liter V8.

The Koenigsegg V8 is the most downsized homologated production ICE in the world, with 220hp per liter (using regular pump gas). The compact nature of the engine means the Regera is light in weight, and therefore nimble and efficient.

The Regera V8 differs slightly from our predecessor Agera engine. As the powertrain already produces a combined 1500hp and with electric propulsion providing instant torque from the Direct Drive system, we did not have to go as extreme on ICE power.

Instead, we installed even smaller, faster-spooling turbos on the Regera, further enhancing the car’s drivability and response.

The Regera is specifically designed to be a luxury Megacar alternative to Koenigsegg’s traditional extreme, light weight, race-like road cars.

The Koenigsegg Regera combines a powerful twin-turbo V8 combustion engine with three electric motors and cutting edge battery power via new powertrain technology called Koenigsegg Direct Drive. This revolutionary technology removes the traditional gearbox, making the car lighter and more efficient.

While traditional Koenigseggs have always had surprising levels of practicality, creature comforts and features, our primary focus has always been to make the fastest cars on the planet – around a racetrack or anywhere else. The Koenigsegg Regera continues this tradition, but with innovative technology that blends outrageous speed, supreme comfort, and a unique Direct Drive experience.

Koenigsegg has unveiled an all-new megacar – the Koenigsegg Jesko – at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show. Jesko inherits the mantle left by the Agera RS as the leading trackfocused, road-legal car for those looking for the ultimate in vehicle performance.

The Koenigsegg Gemera´s engine is small. At the same time, it is big when it comes to power, torque and sound. Still, it is small when it comes to emissions and consumption. In short - it is a contradiction of an engine, developed and created by Koenigsegg and its sister company, Freevalve. Therefore, it has been named the “Tiny Friendly Giant” – or TFG for short. Being a two-liter three-cylinder engine, the TFG is future-proofed given its extreme performance, reduced fuel consumption and lowered emissions – not to forget its ability to run on secondgeneration CO2 neutral renewable fuels.
