Architecture has been an important aspect in life. The way how architecture is applied and designed alters one’s lifestyle in many ways, ranging from one’s social paradigm to their surrounding environment.

My passion in architecture has always been driven by the motivation to constantly improve the quality of one’s lifestyle while maintaining the sustainability between their surrounding environments. I believe that this can be attained through my contribution in design and through a sustainable practice to facilitate a greater cultural significance within the community.

Throughout my undergraduate architectural course, I have gradually developed an understanding on the importance of architecture through the aspect of its social and environmental attributions and will continue to enhance my knowledge and understanding of the discipline in Architecture.

Hence, the following works are a collection of my previous projects and accounts of my experiences. The works presented in this portfolio consists mainly of projects which were my assignments during my Bachelor of Environments course at the University of Melbourne and a few selected works that I have developed privately during my own time.

1.0 Heurism

1

Heurism is a “hands on� approach to overcoming an obstacle. This approach could be acquired through creativity, experience and experimentation by an individual.

The aim of this project is to develop a new learning centre complex as part of the University High School, Story Street, Parkville, including General Learning Areas and a Sports Department.

The idea of this project is to activate a heuristic community through a sense of flow within the high school. The new public entrance from Royal Parade will serve as the connection and central axis into the existing buildings. The concept of using glass panels as the enclosure for the central axis is inspired by winter gardens originating as elegant glass conservatories attached to European palaces in the 17th to 19th centuries. This enclosure provides a space for leisure activities as students stroll through the new learning centre while also maintaining a visual connection to the external surroundings. The large glass panels along the central axis also maximises the amount of natural sunlight into the space, maintaining the optimum temperature and warmth for students during winter.

This central axis will also serve as a multi- purpose space where students are able to utilise the space creatively,interactively and heuristically according to their individual needs. It also creates a sense of flow into the school from the external school compound.

The new learning centre and sports stadium will be located on opposite sides along the central space to create a sense of connection visually and physically between them, in relation to the existing school campus and Royal Parade.

The new learning centre will be zoned according its levels while enabling the ground floor to serve as a covered breakout space for students and teachers to gather for academic guidance or simply serving as a hang out space. The large skylights and voids within the new learning centre will allow adequate light into the building while classrooms are placed along the north side of the learning centre to receive optimum light and warmth during winter. Each classroom contains an external terrace for any informal studies, enabling classes to be conducted outside of classrooms. The rooftop garden above serves as an experimental herb garden for research to assist them in their studies and also an external breakout space for students to meet up.

The sports stadium will be located on the other side of the school. The green slope adjacent to the sports stadium serves as a connection between the existing field and the rooftop above the sports stadium. A new basketball court, gymnasium and offices are added on the roof and to the west of the sports stadium respectively.

Thus, providing students a spacious and comfortable space to workout while overlooking the vibrant surroundings of Royal Parade.

Competition Design Brief: Breathing is an essence in life. However, how do we define life?

Design Proposal: The form of life can be analysed at different spectrums. Despite them being experienced at different scales, these scopes of life share similar features which delineate how life revolves around our world. These features range from a macro scale to a micro scale, starting from Earth, to the city, to a student, to a single cell. These features will also represent the architectural language for the tectonics in our design proposal.

A breathing space for students is perceived as a facility to temporarily relieve their hardships during the course of their studies. It is a place for contemplation and an escape route from the harsh realities of life. These breathing spaces are categorised physically and mentally. However these spaces are not effectively utilised to its maximum potential due to the distractions of technology, breaking the social boundaries between one another. This eventually causes students to conform to the social norms that heavily emphasizes the difference in social status between individuals, gradually reducing one’s breath and quality of life.

Building upon our understanding of the form of life, our proposal touches on 3 key elements as a representation and canvas for our new typology, supporting student life and its emphasis on human welfare.

Using the Core and Void to represent breathing spaces and atmosphere respectively, the designated external shell seeks to serve as a membrane to filter any unwanted distractions in order for the Core to function at its maximum performance, regaining the loss of breath from individuals, gradually restoring one’s quality of life.

3.0 Anonymous Stage

The brief in this project was to capture the urban energy of a dedicated site, Hosier Lane, Melbourne. The site makes up one of the few places in the city where graffiti is legalised and available for anyone who wishes to express their thoughts and emotions through graffiti. As the theme was “New Paper�, we were encouraged to design using Virtual Reality (VR) as a tool to produce our work. Hence, the following works are designed virtually through the use of VR headsets to produce a short video as the final product, while also creating a VR working platform to document our process throughout this subject.

We looked at Hozier Lane, Melbourne through the lens of an anonymous artist and the way he visualizes his art as a visual and spatial stage to express his creativity and emotion. The anoymous artist uses graffiti to define how he is able to visualise 3-Dimensional space and explains how Hozier Lane is his theatrical stage to perform his art, eventually representing the tourists as his audience to spectate his work. The annoymous artist then brings us into his world of graffiti and guides us through a journey to experience the space he created by extruding the 2 dimensional graffiti into a 3-Dimensional space.

4.0 EBSS Axonometric Drawing

The aim for this subject was to understand the construction of commercial buildings. In this case, the Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences was used as a precedent for us to study and understand the construction methods used to construct the building. A 1:20 scale axonometric drawing of a section of the building following a 1:20 scale model was undertaken to compare the building’s design intent along with its construction limitations when it was being built.

5.0 The Art of Deception

The task for this project was to design a pavilion with significant qualities and ideas of a Little Kingfisher which was assigned by my tutor. We listed down the key ideas and qualities of the bird which could be carried into our design and scripted these ideas onto the parametric plug-in software called Grasshopper to determine it’s design outcome.

This project was initially assigned as an exercise for us to explore different techniques and sources to extract ideas without assigning a specific brief on the subject matter. It required us to understand and evaluate what architecture is to further develop our current designs and conceptual skills.

Design Statement: Taking the idea of deception which the Little Kingfisher uses as a self-defence mechanism from its prey, we explored the idea of transparency to develop our design to be deceiving aesthetically, functionally and how it responds to the site allocated. Further exploration of transparency can be seen through our proposal for the use of glazing to achive the final outcome. The overall structure is speculated to serve as a temporary shelter for users from strong winds which are frequent in the area. Further description and processes are reflected in the following pages.

Key Ideas Taken We concentrated on the Little Kingfisher’s deceiving traits and characteristics in evading its predators and hunting skills as the main idea in our design process.

Design Process Keeping in mind of the idea of deception, we brainstormed the possibilities and alternatives to be incorporated into the design of the pavilion. A list of parts of the pavilion including types of materials were identified as follows: 1. Facade 2. Interior 3. Materials 4. Making Illusions wherever possible We then scripted a model on grasshopper and became more inclined to the Panneling Function in Grasshopper.

Preliminary Design Evaluation The preliminary design was used to determine the pavilion’s function, usability and design in relation to the given bird.

After scripting the form on Grasshopper, we found that we could incorporate our list into the form to implement the idea of deception.

Hence, these are some of the aspects which were added into the structure once the final form was decided.

1. Smaller perforations on the facade while bigger perforated holes on the interior of the structure 2. Material used- the render which makes it look like marble to enable the structure to look aesthetically rich .

3. Straight Panels forming a curvy or organic compound when assembled.

Final Design Outcome Updated design based on the aspects listed: Visual Form, Reflectivity, and Materiality inserted into Grasshopper. Our algorithimic outcome gave us the final form for speculation. We decided to go with the idea of transparency to enhance the concept of deception towards the users. The final form is speculated as a form of wind shelter below for users with a proposed swimming pool on the top deck. The transparency of the entire structure gives the effect of the swimming pool being levitated above ground when in reality, it is contained within the structure itself. The lines projecting between the structure acts as both a structural support to the top and a facade to conceal the central component of the structure, enhancing the idea of deception for the “levitated� pool.

6.0 Fluidity Through Geometric Shapes

In this architectural studio, our brief was to design a pavilion within the site given: Herring Island. The main concept behind my design is fluidity through the use of geometric shapes. This idea was developed from my conceptacle which is based on the idea of stacking lines to create dynamic planes. Through fluidity, one is able to promote the concept of movements. Hence by stacking lines as the start and progressing to a planar structure, it promotes a sense of dynamic fluid progression from an open space to an enclosed space. The concept for this final project was taken and developed from my previous works such as point line and plane, mass, and frame + infill where the idea of lines stacking, curvy movements, and the experience of being in an enclosed spaced were incorporated into my final design.

Site Chosen The site chosen for the pavilion is a located on the northern part of the Island. This is chosen as the landform is a small valley in the island containing one of the island’s gems: The Cairns Sculptor by British sculpture, Andy Goldsworthy. This sculpture represents the secret which the pavilion holds.

The landform also provides a form of descending, creating a gradual unknown feeling for the audience as they descend to the scultpure. dense trees located there also creates a form of camouflage to the pavilion while revealing little to the viewers which will spark their interest and curiosity to descend and explore the pavilion.

I used the theme “Fluidity through the use of geometric elements� that was taken from the overall design and form of the conceptacle. This theme was further developed from the initial idea of line stacking to these curvy and dynamic planes.

Fluidity promotes the concept of movement which is a crucial element for an individual filled with curiosity in order to know the contents of a secret.

Hence, having the idea of stacking lines in a spiral direction as the start then progressing to a planar structure promotes a sense of progression from an open space to an enclosed space.
