Nutley

Windmill

Our volunteers have sought to avoid this. In 2019 they removed the sweeps (in Sussex they are ‘sweeps’, in other places they are ‘sails’) to ease the pressure on the post. Two shutter sweeps looked to be beyond repair and had to be replaced – they dated from 1973, so the feeling was that they had lasted well. This meant building new ones, a task our restorers had not attempted before. It’s not straightforward; the sweeps are some 7 metres long by 2 metres wide, with an aerodynamic twist in them. Using the old sweeps as a pattern, our volunteers managed to create replacements, and were ready to replace them when lockdown stopped all work.

An old windmill needs a lot of attention, and Nutley Windmill is maintained by our group of expert volunteers. It is an open trestle post mill. The massive wooden post runs up the centre of the mill, while the trestles form the wooden framework on which the body of the mill sits. Wear and tear can lead to what our volunteers call ‘head sickness’, with the weight of the sweeps tending to pull the post forward. This could cause the mill to lean, with the risk that the turning sweeps could clip the trestles, with potentially disastrous consequences.

10 In due course, the sweeps were replaced on the front of the mill. There was a certain amount of tension once the operation was completed – would they turn freely? A volunteer summed up everyone’s feelings ‘… the moment of truth, on a windy day we released the strops and brake, turned the mill into the wind, and held our breath as the sweeps slowly started to turn – great feelings of joy, pride and relief!’ Everything worked as it should – was there ever any doubt? What of the future? Grinding flour? That’s the dream, but not yet. Next year…? For now, we would be delighted to see you at one of our open days. These are on 29 & 30 August, 26 September and 10 October, from 2-30 to 5-30 pm. The mill is in Crowborough Road, Nutley, so if you park at Friends Clump,

follow the footpath to the mill. We may not be able to invite you inside (social distancing inside the mill is impossible) but we do aim to have the sweeps turning, which will mean physically turning the mill so the sweeps catch the wind. There is no charge, but we are always grateful for donations to help with the restoration costs – and, a new addition this year, you can donate by text! Toilets are available on site. The open days are, of course, dependent on the weather, and we still have to keep an eye out for the virus, but what could be better than a sunny day on Ashdown Forest watching some of the oldest technology known to man at work. Nutley windmill is owned by Uckfield & District Preservation Society. For more information visit www. bridgecottageuckfield.co.uk, and click on ‘Nutley Windmill’.

A Home for Wildlife

We all know that Ashdown Forest is a home to huge variety of plants and animals, some of which are familiar to us but many more are unknown, overlooked or quite rare. So how do we know what is here? The forest is so big that it is impossible for us to survey every part of it for plants, animals and fungi but we are fortunate to know a lot of experts, specialists and amateur enthusiasts who are keen to share their sightings with us. © Ashley Payne Meadow Brown Butterfly–

Meadow Brown Butterfly – © Ashley Payne

We recently hosted a BBQ for a small group of wildlife recorders who came along to share their ideas and knowledge with us. Their expertise included spiders, insects, bryophytes, plants, birds and much more. It was a fascinating evening, and we hope this will be the start of some cross-partnership working with Butterfly Conservation, Sussex Botanical Society, Species Recovery Trust and others, to help us monitor the species of Ashdown Forest. Continuing the wildlife theme, the results from our nightjar survey in June suggest that there were at least 37 male nightjars on the forest. Given that the conditions were not perfect, we estimate there will be more than we managed to record. A bonus for wildlife watching after dark is that you also get to see other unusual species - glow-worms, woodcock and bats were spotted too. Special thanks to all the volunteers who helped us with this survey – it is a great result.

A HOME FOR WILDLIFE CONTINUED

Another specialist heathland species that is only slightly easier to see is the rare silver-studded blue butterfly. This small butterfly can be seen flying low over the flowering heather and will sometimes roost on grass tussocks in the late afternoon. Its numbers are declining nationally, and we will be liaising with our local butterfly experts to monitor the population on Ashdown Forest and to increase the amount of suitable habitat to help the butterflies thrive.

Don’t forget to record your sightings on iNaturalist www. inaturalist.org – this is a great way to learn about what you find too. As the summer holidays and hotter weather have arrived, Ashdown Forest will be a popular destination for many new and returning visitors. Please check the Ashdown Forest Code on our website to help plan your visit (www.ashdownforest.org). Details of guided walks and events can be found on the events page. The costs of managing the forest are considerable and do please consider giving a donation through our website to help towards the upkeep and maintenance of the forest and car parks, www. ashdownforest.org.

Chailey Repair Café: A lovely story In June 1945, 5-year-old Dawn Afford’s grandmother made her a dress to wear for the VE (Victory in Europe) day celebrations. Dawn’s grandmother had been ill for several years by that point, but was determined to see her son (Dawn’s Dad) home safe after 6 years away at war. She died at the end of 1945, once her son was home. The material she used for the dress was meat muslin from Smithfield Meat market in London and the ribbon was in her needlework box. Dawn’s mother kept the dress for her as part of the family’s history, so Dawn could tell the story to her children. As Dawn had only boys, she has decided to hand the dress on to her eldest granddaughter,

so she brought it to Chailey Repair Cafe and the result speaks for itself. The dress is now going to be put in a frame and preserved as a memory, not just of a difficult time in our country’s history, but also of the remarkable lady who originally made it. Our talented fabrics team

are always happy to help you preserve your memories. Do come and see us at Chailey Repair Café, on the second Saturday of each month, at St. Peter’s Church, Chailey, or contact us via chaileyrc@ gmail.com

Ardingly Reservoir was originally created in 1996 and is approximately four kilometres in length, taking three hours to complete at a leisurely pace. Slightly out of the Ashdown Forest area, it nevertheless is a wonderful destination to go for immersion in nature.

STOP 1 This is the start of the trail, you will

see locally crafted benches to sit on and take in the wonderful views. Directly in front of you is the valve tower and overflow bell mouth. The valve tower is used to release water from the reservoir either directly into the treatment works at Shell Brook or into the River Ouse.

STOP 2 This small copse is called Fullingmill Wood. This name is an indication of the work that used to occur nearby and throughout Sussex from the 12th Century to the late 1800’s. In the textile industry, fulling is the process which follows weaving, the cloth is cleansed, shrunk and thickened by moisture, heat and pressure. Today, the wood is home to many different species and varies in age and structure, with oak, ash and beech. During the

1987 storms, many trees were damaged, and the resulting areas of dead wood have been left to encourage mosses, lichens, fungi, and insects (particularly beetles). In the spring and autumn, the floor is awash with brightly coloured wildflowers, including primroses, wood anemones, bluebells and common spotted orchids. In autumn, a variety of fungi may be seen.

STOP 3 This is one of two bird hides located on the reservoir. The bird hide is there for you to get a closer look at many of the bird species; the beautiful tranquil setting is a haven for wildlife. There are displays inside to help you identify the birds and also a board for you to share all the birds you have spotted with other users.

STOP 4 This woodland is Furzefield Wood, which is owned and managed by Kew Gardens at Wakehurst Place. Dormice (Muscardinus arvellanarius) are known to frequent pockets of woodland such as this one. Dormice spend most of their time high in the tree tops. The best indicator of their presence is opened hazel nut shells; the make a neat round hole on one side, leaving characteristic toothmarks around the edge. The nuts are eaten whilst green and still on the tree. The Kingfisher Trail continues along the causeway on your left to the bridleway, which, continues along the Balcombe arm of the reservoir. Alternatively, you may wish to retrace your steps back to the car park.

STOP 5 The area is planted with reedbeds which provide an important habitat, as well as helping to protect banks from erosion. This position also offers a good view of the recreational facilities available at the Ardingly Activity Centre located near the dam wall. STOP 6 This woodland is called Great Burrow Wood. Before the reservoir was flooded, it was this woodland which occupied the majority of the valley. To make way for the reservoir, a section was felled and removed. During very dry periods the waterlogged stumps of these trees can be seen.

STOP 7 On your left is an outcrop of Ardingly Sandstone. Outcrops such as these support a rare community of ferns, mosses, liverworts and lichens. The rock is formed of sand grains weakly held together, the outside of which hardens on exposure to form a protective crust. These rocks were formed during the early Cretaceous period, when dinosaurs once roamed the earth. This area is also a good spot to see kingfishers, using tree branches near the water as a perch from which they watch the water for small fish. The best time to see

to see them is first thing in the morning. The bridleway continues for a few hundred metres more before meeting the road. The Kingfisher Trail continues back along the trail you have just walked. Alternatively, you may continue your walk using the local network of footpaths and bridleways which cross the reservoir.

STOP 8 The second bird hide located on the reservoir which provides excellent views of osprey (Pandion haliaetusatyrium) during the months of August and

2 2 KINGFISHER TRAIL CONTINUED September when the birds migrate from Scotland to West Africa, using Ardingly Reservoir as an excellent feeding and resting site before commencing their long flight.

STOP 9 The woodland on your right is Scrubs Shaw, a relict copse from the once larger stand of Austrian Pine which skirted Shell Brook before the reservoir was built. Few Austrian Pine remain on the site following the 1987 storm. Work is currently being undertaken to remove the non-native sycamore trees, a highly invasive species, which casts a heavy shade, blocking out the ground flora and slower growing native tree species. Recent works to celebrate the reservoir’s 25th birthday have involved the planting of native trees such as ash and hazel, as well as hedgerow species, which lead the visitor through the wood, whilst providing important corridors for birds and small mammals.

STOP 10 The grassland areas of the reservoir are managed as wildflower meadows, cut on a two-year rotation during September and October, helping to improve the grassland habitat for wildlife. Excess water from the neighbouring farmland is encouraged to flow under the paths into the reservoir. This process has developed an excellent marginal marshland habitat, which provides shelter for wildlife including dragonflies, birds and small mammals. STOP 11 On your right is an area of willow planted a few years ago as a test plot. Willow is widely used as a natural material for bank protection. The constant lapping of waves onto the reservoir’s banks leads to bank erosion and destabilisation, resulting in the loss of footpaths, soil and vegetation. The use of ‘soft engineering’ using plants, instead of more rigid material such as concrete and steel, is highly beneficial to wildlife. Birds such as wagtails, warblers and wildfowl use this area for feeding and nesting.

Crowborough Beacon 125th Anniversary Cup Local lad, 14-year-old Louis Lewis beat off stiff competition from ninety-seven men to win the Anniversary Cup last month! Despite the drizzle that the early starters had to contend with, the weather improved and the scores were high with 14 members scoring 40 or more points. Louis scored an outstanding 46 points. 30 ladies competed for the Salver cup and Sue Waters was the worthy winner with a fabulous 40 points. Louis, who is only 14 years old, said: “I am delighted to have won the cup commemorating the 125th anniversary of Crowborough Beacon Golf Club. “My World Handicap was 10.8 on the day, and is now down to 8.9. I really would like to get my handicap down to 5 this year and be close to scratch at the end of next year, when I will be 15 years of age. I would like to make my career in the world of golf. “I dropped 4 shots in total, 3 of them on the par 3’s! The course has come back well after struggling with the weird weather of late & the heavy rain before the competition made the greens very receptive, which suited my high ball flight.” All the best to Louis in his future career!

Give your plants

a holiday too! and move houseplants away from sunny windowsills and into shadier spots.

Add Pot Saucers

Any excess water will stay in the saucer and be reabsorbed back into the soil.

If you are going away this summer, spare a thought for your plants, who will be having a staycation. To treat your plants with love and care before you go, here are some hydration tips:

Mulch

Place a layer of mulch (bark or straw-based compost) around your plants over well-watered soil. Mulch also helps keep weeds at bay.

Place pots in the shade

Use a Tap Mounted Watering Controller

You can set it to the times you choose daily.

Add Moisture Retaining Crystals

Mix in compost at the time of planting. The crystals absorb moisture and lock it away until the compost around it becomes dry, then the gel releases the water. Perfect for baskets, pots and containers.

Have A Bath

Soak some towels in water and line the bath or sink with them, then place your plants on top.

Move plants in pots into the shade, and place

Take time to enjoy all the life your garden protects and fosters.

Lemon & Blueberry Yogurt Cake

You will need: • • • • • • • • • •

½ Cup Yogurt ¾ Cup Milk ¾ Cup Caster or Coconut Sugar 3 Tbsp Neutral Oil (vegetable/ coconut) 1 Lemon: 3 Tbsp juice and zest of the whole lemon 2 Cups Self Raising Flour 1 ½ tsp Baking Powder ¼ tsp Bicarbonate of Soda ¼ tsp Salt ¾ Cup Blueberries (organic are tastiest!)

To a large mixing bowl add the yogurt, milk, sugar, oil, lemon juice and zest, beat together with a whisk until the sugar is well-combined.

Once combined add in most of the blueberries but save some to poke into the top of the batter once in the tin so they are evenly distributed throughout the sponge. Pour the mixture into a lined loaf tin, poke in the remaining blueberries and bake for 55 minutes at 180 degrees centigrade. The cake

Miss Moneywise Cleaning Tips • Make a carpet deodorising powder by mixing a pot of bicarb of soda with 15 drops lavender oil, mix thoroughly. Sprinkle the powder onto the carpet, leave for 15 minutes, then vacuum off. As well as freshening up the carpet, you will be left with a wonderful natural scent. • Want to clean the fridge but don’t want to use chemical spray? Make up a paste of hot water and bicarbonate of soda. For a fridge that's not too dirty, simply wipe the paste in the interior with a soft, damp cloth, then rinse off with a clean cloth and dry as needed. For caked on food, leave the wet paste to soak in for 15 minutes, then wipe off. • The acid in lemon juice or vinegar cuts through grease and does a good job removing grease. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar or lemon juice. Spray on glass and wait for a short time. Wipe off with newspaper (the traditional method) or a micro cloth.

AMBER T

“Amber T…sixteen year old singer/ songwriter, how brilliant is she” Sir Elton John Local girl, 17 year-old Amber Titchener is already making waves in the music world. From performing numerous live sessions on BBC Kent, being interviewed live on BBC Radio 1, BBC Asian Network and BBC South East News to releasing her debut single “Tick Tock” with Dr.Zeus, at the tender age of 15, with a video that’s had over 1.5 millions YouTube views.

We’re pleased to bring you a Q&A with Amber: What inspired you to start writing and singing your own tunes at aged 13? I have always loved singer/ songwriters and appreciated the lyrics more than the instrumental. As I love performing, it was important to be able to perform originals, a must at most venues; I had to get my head down and start writing, developing my own style and sound as I went along. So far, what has the highlights been of your early career? Most recently when Sir Elton John played my song on his Apple music show Rocket Hour, calling me brilliant… still feels surreal now! Other major highlights have been reaching over 100,000 Spotify streams. Selling

out Chequer Mead for my headline Teenage Cancer Trust gig… walking out on a stage I’d performed on for many years to suddenly doing my own show was amazing. Plus being the first acoustic artist to play at the open deck on London’s iconic Shard. I love playing big events, as it gets the adrenaline flowing and I’m lucky that I don’t suffer from stage fright. What do you hope for the immediate future and in the next few years? I hope to get back on stage and get around the country performing. As for the immediate future I hope my new single ‘Get Me’ is hugely successful. There’s a video to accompany it, which is really exciting as the past two scheduled videos had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

What local support have you had? I have been really lucky to have been asked to perform for the previous town mayors (Rex Whittaker & Danny Favor) at their events at Chequer Mead. For my early gigs I got massive support from Dave Phillips who put me on loads of Open Mics and still do gigs with him locally (when possible). I’ve been lucky to perform at East Court, on the High Street for the Big Reveal among others. I also get great support from Sackville School where I’m in the sixth form. Who is your favourite artist of all time and why? My favourite artist/band has to be the 1975. I’m a huge fan girl and really appreciate their unique creativity. After seeing them live numerous times, I’ve taken huge inspiration from not only their performance style but music too.
