A World War I tale from a locally born Tommy Sidney Godley became the first infantryman in the First World War to win the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest military honour for bravery. The VC group of six medals was awarded just a month into the Great War when his bravery came to the attention of George V. The medals were auctioned by Spink of London in July and pre-sale estimates were between £140,000 - £180,000. Incredibly they fetched £276,000 on the day.

Here is the background story: All towns in Britain sent many of its citizens to fight in World War I. Countless lost their lives, but one soldier, who lived through it and returned to tell his story was Private Sidney Godley.

Sidney was born in East Grinstead on August 14th 1889, the nephew of Metropolitan Police Officer George Godley (also from this area), who was famously involved in the 1888 hunt for Jack the Ripper. His mother died in 1896 and so he was sent to live with relatives in Willesden. When his father remarried, the family appear to be living in Footscray, Kent according to the 1901 Census. After leaving school at 14, Sidney worked as an ironmonger in Kilburn for several years before joining the 4th Battallion, Royal Fusiliers in 1909.

On August 23rd 1914, less than three weeks after the outbreak of the war, Sidney was defending at Nimy Bridge in Mons when he volunteered to hold said bridge with his commanding officer, Lieutenant Maurice Dease. They were to cover the retreat of the British & French Armies to inland France. Dease was killed so Godley then single-handedly held the bridge for 2 hours. This was despite being wounded

by Shrapnel entering his back and being shot in the head. His courageous actions allowed the retreat of his comrades. Eventually he was captured but not before he had dismantled his gun and thrown the parts into the canal.

Originally it was thought that he had been killed, but some time later it was found that he was in fact a prisoner-of-war at Doberitz, where he stayed until the end of the war. It was there that he learned that he had been awarded the Victoria Cross for valour. The first private in the war to be so honoured, he was invested by King George V in 1919 at Buckingham Palace.

In 1954 Sidney was interviewed on BBC Radio: “The Germans came over in mass formation and we opened fire... We carried on until towards evening when the order was given for the line to retire. I was then asked by Lieut.

Steele to remain and hold the position while the retirement took place, which I did do, although I was very badly wounded several times, but I managed to carry on. I remained on the bridge and held the position, but when it was time for me to get away I smashed the machine gun up, and threw it in the Canal.”

PRIVATE SIDNEY GODLEY VC continued Sidney Godley died on June 29th 1957 in Essex, aged 67. He is buried in Loughton cemetery.

Oliver Pepys of the Medal Department, Spink Auctioneers told the Ashdown Forest Living: “The Godley V.C. is both hugely important and highly emotive and is one of the most famous medal groups of the Great War. Through his actions at Mons, even to the last, when he ensured that his gun would not fall into enemy hands, Godley set a standard to which the British Tommy would aspire for the rest of the war, and brought honour to his regiment”.

Godley Memorials • East Grinstead Town Council mounted a Blue Plaque on their offices • Loughton Town Council placed a Blue Plaque at 164 Torrington Drive to commemorate its famous former resident • In 1976 a new housing estate in Bexley, Greater London, was named after him • In 1992 Tower Hamlets Council named a block of flats "Sidney Godley VC House"

WORKING HORSE TRUST TO LOSE IT’S HOME The Working Horse Trust is devoted to safeguarding the future of our Heavy Working Horse breeds some of which are now exceedingly rare. These majestic animals are part of our heritage and deserve the respect our forebears would have given them.

The Trust aims to demonstrate just how valuable working horses can still be in a rural economy and show how they can make a positive contribution to the good husbandry of our environment.

A tenant on the Nevill Estate at Eridge since 1994, the trust is now to lose its home at the end of September 2013 - just 5 months short of the 20th anniversary of its arrival.

The volunteer-run organisation has 15 draught horses of its own – all rare breeds – most of whom have been born at Eridge. Trust volunteers have laboured long and hard to build their base, on what was a virgin site, and are saddened at the prospect of having to re-locate.

“When we came to Eridge, we started totally from scratch”, said Trustee Jo Ambrose. “There were no buildings, no fences, no water supply, not even any edible grass. But thanks to the outstanding efforts of our volunteers and the generosity of many, many wellwishers we have built ourselves a modest home that has served the Trust well. It is absolutely heart-breaking to have to leave it all behind and start again somewhere else. We have to be positive and practical and rise to the challenge. much to find a new home with mains electricity and flushing toilets – essentials that we have managed to live without as we could never afford to install them”.

The Trust is looking for 35 to 50 acres of grazing with a range of buildings, ideally as close to Eridge as possible so as not to lose the invaluable support of members of the local community or amenities such as Rotherfield Village Hall where many a fundraising event has taken place.

“You don’t spend nearly 20 years in one place without building up an extensive support network” said Jo “and to lose that would jeopardise our future more than the actual move itself. We rely so much on our friends hereabouts not just to care for the horses but in all manner of ways – from making cakes for our Tea Room to emergency night-time repairs to our generator.

Fundraising events such as our Open Days, Race Night, Quiz Night, Sponsored Rides and Walks are all well supported locally but, most importantly, we have over 30 dedicated volunteers who keep the Trust running. It is an integral part of these people’s lives so we cannot move too far away and risk losing any of the team, not to mention the skills base that we have worked so hard to build up.”

Little Donkey We stumbled across a fabulous local Scaynes Hill based charity, Safe Haven for Donkeys, recently. As the sounds of ‘Little Donkey’ will soon be ringing through school halls we thought it apt this month to let people know about the charity’s background: Back in the early 90s, Lucy Fensom, then a teenager, travelled to Israel to attend a kibbutz. She loved the country so much she decided to stay and as an animal-lover joined the Jerusalem Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Soon after a donkey was abandoned outside the centre in the pouring rain. Lucy took pity, giving him food & shelter, until his owner came back, only to then later abandon the donkey for Lucy to care for again. This went on for months until Lucy, who had come to love the donkey that she’d named “Donk”, bought him from his owner. She left money for his care when she later had to leave Israel. However, it became apparent Donk was not getting the care he needed and so Lucy was determined to have him brought to the UK. Finally, in 1998, with the help of a large animal charity,

Donk was flown into Heathrow Airport, where he had a joyful reunion with Lucy and became something of a TV celebrity – he was even featured on GMTV and Blue Peter! Donk went off to spend his retirement at an animal sanctuary in Cambridge where Lucy visited him regularly until his sudden death just a year later, probably due to having been worked too hard from a young age.

Lucy was devastated and decided to do something to help the many hundreds of donkeys in the Holy Land in Donk’s memory. She started fundraising and with the help of a national newspaper and the same charity that had flown Donk to the UK, raised enough money to start Israel’s first donkey sanctuary.

Today, Lucy’s “Safe Haven” is home to over 170 donkeys and

mules (and even a couple of horses) which have come from all sorts of backgrounds. Some abandoned because they were too old or sick to work, some victims of cruelty. Over the last couple of years, Safe Haven has opened clinics in the Palestinian towns of Qalqilya and Nablus helping over 500 donkeys, mules and horses a week, Lucy and her team also have a mobile clinic which they take to around 20 different locations.

No-one, least of all Lucy herself, ever thought that taking pity on a mistreated donkey nearly 20 years ago would lead to so much. A Christmas Tale: Just before Christmas 2011, Lucy decided to attend the donkey market in the Palestinian city of Nablus. On arrival, she and Palestinian vet Dr Jaber were confronted by a sea of donkeys and they spent the morning giving free treatment, advice and support to the owners.

When packing up to leave, Lucy suddenly noticed a donkey laying on the ground, trembling all over.

It was immediately obvious the donkey was very sick and the owner agreed that Lucy could take the donkey and her little foal back to Safe Haven’s sanctuary.

Lucy named the mother Belle and the little foal Baubles and put the pair into the back of the van with another mother and foal, Mistletoe & Jingles, who also needed the sanctuary’s care.

arrived back at the sanctuary, it was obvious that poor Belle was very ill indeed and sadly, she died after only a couple of days. Lucy was worried about orphaned Baubles but she took a chance and put the foal in with Mistletoe & Jingles to see what would happen. The three immediately bonded and soon, Mistletoe was feeding Baubles alongside Jingles.

Today the three of them are a happy little family and thanks to the generosity of a supporter of Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land Lucy has been able to realise her dream of a permanent clinic for donkeys, mules and horses in the city of Nablus, so this Christmas Tale had a happy ending.

Bright lights in the sky this November?

Not fireworks, but a Meteor shower…

A meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors enter the earth’s atmosphere and are observed to radiate from one point in the night sky. In the case of the annual Leonids meteor shower, that point appears to be the constellation ‘Leo’, after which the Leonids are named.

The Leonids are caused when the Earth passes through the tail of Comet Temple-Tuttle during it’s annual journey around the Sun. This comet sweeps through our solar system once every 33.2 years. It leaves behind trails that are thousands of miles long, made up of very small particles of dust and ice; they punch into the atmosphere with the same energy as a car hitting at 60 mph! Happily almost all of them disintegrate before they hit the earth’s surface.

An annual Leonids shower may deposit 12 or 13 tons of particles

across the entire planet.

Meteor showers are usually best viewed during the very early hours of the morning. After watching the dark sky for a while, you should start seeing bright streaks of light as the meteors race across the sky. The amount you see can vary from as few as 3 or 4 an hour to as many as several hundred an hour.

The Leonids meteor shower peaks around 17 November of each year.

Approximately every 33 years, the Leonids produce a ‘meteor storm’ which is an amazing sight to behold. Peaking at rates of thousands of meteors per hour.

The Leonids storm of 1833 gave birth to the term ‘meteor shower’ – the comet Temple-Tuttle would have recently swept through our solar system to cause the magnificent ‘storm’ rather than the usual ‘shower’. The last Leonids

storms were between 1999 and 2002 and yes, you can view some of this on youtube! Hold tight for the next Leonids storm in about 23 years time but in the meantime with diligence, you could try to catch the Leonids shower this November.

Remember the 5th of November…

Fawkes was defiant in the face of interrogation by members of the King’s Privy Chamber. When asked what he was doing in possession of so much gunpowder, Fawkes answered “to blow you Scotch beggars back to your native mountains”. His “Roman resolution” and steadfast manner earned him the admiration of the King. Under torture, however, he was soon broken giving all names & details of those involved.

Guy Fawkes (13 April 1570 – 31 January 1606), also known as Guido Fawkes (the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish) was the most infamous member of a group of English Catholics who planned & failed to blow-up the houses of parliament in 1605.

Fawkes was born and educated in York. After his father died his mother married a Catholic who refused to attend Anglican Services. Undoubtedly influenced, Fawkes later converted to Catholicism and left for the continent, where he fought in the Eighty Years’ War on the side of Catholic Spain against Protestant Dutch reformers. His zest for the cause was such that he went to Spain to seek support for a Catholic rebellion in England but was unsuccessful. Returning to England he was introduced to Robert Catesby who was to be the leader and architect of the Gunpowder plot.

On 26th October the Catholic MP Lord Monteagle received an anonymous letter warning him to stay away from parliament for his safety. Despite becoming aware of the letter the conspirators resolved to continue with their plans, as it was thought to be a hoax. Monteagle showed the letter to King James, however. The King, choosing to err on the side of caution ordered a search of the cellars underneath Parliament. In the early hours of the morning on the 5th of November, Fawkes was found leaving the cellar and arrested. Inside, the barrels of gunpowder were discovered hidden under piles of firewood and coal.

With Fawkes’ fellow plotters hanged and quartered, he was the last to stand on the scaffold. With help, he began to climb the ladder to the noose and, although weakened by torture, managed to jump from the gallows thus dying instantly and avoiding being ‘‘hung, drawn & quartered”. His body was nevertheless quartered and distributed to “the four corners of the kingdom” to be displayed.

On 5 November 1605 Londoners were encouraged to celebrate the King’s escape from assassination by lighting bonfires. An Act of Parliament designated each 5 November as “the joyful day of deliverance”, this remained in force until 1859. Although he was only one of 13 conspirators, Fawkes is today the individual most associated with the failed Plot.

Guy Fawkes Night (or Bonfire Night) was accompanied by fireworks from the 17th century onwards. Around the time James II made his conversion to Catholicism public, it became the custom to burn an effigy to place on the fire – historically it was the pope, although of course modern effigies are of Fawkes himself.

Guy Fawkes inadvertedly made an enduring contribution to the English language. During the 19th century, “guy” came to mean any oddly dressed person, but in American English it lost it’s negative connotation, and was used to refer to any male person.

As usual with American English it then proceeded to be absorbed into our language this side of the pond.

Oddly enough Guy Fawkes is sometimes toasted as “the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions”…

Founding Father of the Bluebell Railway Bernard Holden MBE, March 1908 – October 2012

preservation, the Queen’s words to him were: “keep up the good work” which, of course, he did.

In recent years there was nothing more satisfying for him than to see the continual progress being made in the relentless quest for the line to reach East Grinstead once again. Indeed in 2008 he wrote: “Having served the Bluebell Railway and fathered its progress for so long, it is my dearest wish to see this gap bridged.” At least in his final days he had the knowledge that the infamous Imberhorne cutting had finally been broken through, as the extension shortly reaches its conclusion. © derekhayward.co.uk

Bernard Holden and the four founding students

Many of you will have heard about the passing of Bluebell Railway president Bernard Holden last month. Here we take a brief glimpse at how his long life was inextricably intertwined with the Bluebell Railway:

He always followed Bluebell matters very closely and there is a lot the railway owes to his foresight and initiative. This is why he is now justifiably viewed as the founding father of the Bluebell Railway Line.

Bernard Holden was born in the station house at Barcombe on a part of the Bluebell line that no longer exists. He hailed from a family of stationmasters who had been connected to the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway since 1840, when his great-grandfather began work at its wharf at Shoreham (see photo & caption).

The Bluebell Railway began when four young students knocked on Bernard’s door one evening asking for his help in the matter. As fate would have it perhaps, their proposed inaugural meeting date was coincidentally 15th March, Bernard’s birthday.

He was invited to chair the meeting which heralded the beginning of the world’s first standard gauge preservation steam railway. Bernard was a British Rail executive at the time and his knowledge, connections and advice were to prove invaluable in the formative years of the line and beyond.

In August 1960, steam trains ran between Sheffield Park and Horsted Keynes once again.

In 1971, on his retirement from British Rail he became “Superintendent of the Line”. After being involved in various capacities over the years, he finally became president of the ever-popular railway line.

The photo above is from the October 1932 edition of the Southern Railway Magazine, and shows a “Family of Station Masters”. Leaning against the bench at the back of the photo was Bernard J. Holden, MBE, who was at the time a clerk at Grange Road. He was joined in the photograph by four station masters: (from L to R) his grandfather, Charles George Allen Holden (who had started with the LBSCR in late 1860, and retired 31 October 1906 as stationmaster of Hailsham); his father, Charles John Holden of Horley (who joined the Railway on 2 February 1889); and two of his uncles, Arthur Holden of Steyning (joined the LBSCR on 9 December 1893) and Harry Holden of Bexley (who was with the LBSCR from 22 February 1896).

Pasta Carbonara

Serves: 4 adults. Preparation time: 10 mins. Cooking time: 15 mins This recipe turns what’s usually a high-fat family favourite into a healthier option for everyone. So you can still enjoy your dish, while cutting back fat. This classic pasta recipe is made with a reduced fat cheese sauce and has a fabulous flavour!

What to do: 1. Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil. Add the pasta or spaghetti and cook for 8-12 minutes, according to pack instructions.

With Remembrance Day around the corner, we came across this poignant piece of history about John Dallas Crossman, an Australian RAF Pilot who’s plane came down near Forest Row. Thanks to Australian author, Kristen Alexander, we are able to bring you his story: John Dallas Crossman was born in North Queensland, Australia on 20 March 1918. His father Ted, who hailed from Taunton in Somerset, had come to Australia in 1912.

John was a great swimmer, enjoyed music, collected stamps and was a voracious reader but his greatest enthusiasm was for flying. He was mad about aeroplanes from the time he could walk and whenever he could, he headed out to the local aerodrome & loved making plane models. Soon, he would turn to the real thing.

Handsome young John was firmly set upon a career in the air force. After a grand farewell from his family, friends and fiancée Patricia Foley he set sail for England. While at sea, war was declared and while some cheered at the news John’s reaction was subdued and resigned: ‘Should this last any time it seems unlikely that I’ll ever see home again. Still I expect it can’t be helped. A fellow has to realise that.’ And as for the decision to go to war, ‘it is a pretty filthy business altogether but really the only thing that England could do’.

Having arrived in England John joined the RAF on 12 August 1939. His proudest moment was the

John’s first action was on the September 14th. He admitted to being scared sick and panicky when the squadron attacked a formation of about 60 Messerschmitt 109s at 20,000 feet. The fear was worse just before he fired, but he pushed it aside and ‘got one decent burst into a 109 but was unable to see if I got him as (I) had to get out of the way of a few more’.

John was in the air again on the 15th, the day ever since commemorated as Battle of Britain Day. He wrote: ‘ran into hundreds of Jerry kites at about 19,000 feet.

Three of us were going round to do head-on attacks on some Dorniers. I lost speed, spun down 6000 feet, came out near 20 more escorted by about 60 Messerschmitt 109s. Three of the 109s came after me.

I evaded then came round (and) did a stern attack on the Dorniers. Put all my shots into one of them, set his port engine on fire and saw him go down’ John’s nerves quickly passed. As September advanced he was in the air two or even three times a day. With a zest for life and a bright sense of humour, he made friends easily. When he could grasp a few hours respite he spent time with them in an effort to forget the serious business of fighting. His family & fiancée were also clearly in his constant thoughts as John’s cabin walls were plastered with their photos.

By the time John took to the air in the afternoon of 30 September 1940, he had flown 18 sorties. At about 1.30 p.m., 46 Squadron encountered a gaggle of Messerschmitt 109s and the 22 year old’s plane was hit in the ensuing battle. His Hurricane crashed in flames at Tablehurst Farm, Forest Row. An eyewitness believed he may have brought down an enemy aircraft but, if he did, his squadron did not give him any credit for it. Indeed, sadly his death was not even recorded in that days entry in the operational record book.

Edmund Wimperis, an architect who had designed such buildings as Fortnum and Masons, was sketching in Forest Row on the day John died. He spoke to a number of witnesses and was so moved by their accounts that he painted three watercolours of the crash site. He sent them to the Crossmans

The watercolours and fragment are still treasured, tangible reminders of a vibrant young man who wanted nothing other than to fly and in doing so is forever remembered as one of The Few. We understand from other local press that a Mr. Pete Wheeler, who was a young boy living in Forest Row at the time, would like to see a memorial built at the crash site.

Crowborough Choral Society’s forthcoming concert is Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. We will be joined for this performance by German singers from Rellingen near Hamburg. Colin Moore will be conducting the two choirs and the soloists will be Daisy Brown (soprano), Serena Kay (alto), Mark Dobell (tenor) and Martin Johnson (bass). The Sussex Sinfonia with their leader, Christopher Phipps, will accompany the concert. There is access for all and there will be an interval with a bar. 7pm, All Saints Church Centre in Crowborough. Tickets will be available on the door or from Cro’s, the Jewellers in High Street, Crowborough from November. www.crowboroughchoral.com.

Friday 30th November

Crowborough’s main Christmas event will take place on in the Town Centre from 4pm - 6pm. The evening will start with Father Christmas visiting the Town Centre on his way to the Christmas Grotto in the Town Hall. There will be entertainment for the whole family. As well as Fairground rides and Christmas stalls, Stilt walkers, Magicians and glow Jugglers will be on hand to provide street entertainment. Live music will be provided at the Piazza. The land train will be transporting youngsters to Santa’s grotto.

Don’t miss the countdown to the Christmas lights switch on which will be at 6pm.
