Emma Leeke is Managing Director of Leekes, a fourth-generation, family-owned home department retailer that has grown from a small Welsh ironmongery into a leading retail and leisure group. She now oversees large home and furniture stores while staying true to the family’s values of service, quality and community. In this conversation, Emma shares why JFS remains unmissable, how Leekes is evolving, and the trends, challenges and opportunities shaping furniture retail in 2025 and beyond.

What makes the January Furniture Show a must-attend event for you and the Leekes team each year?

It is the largest of the UK furniture shows and is a well-established diary date for the industry. Whilst Covid and its aftermath hit attendance for a period of time, I am delighted to see continued growth in exhibitors and visitor numbers in successive years.

Can you recall a transformative moment or encounter at JFS that helped shape your direction or strategy for Leekes?

I remember bumping into some of the ex Christie Tyler management team in one of the Hall 1 walkways one morning. They were keen to tell us of their new venture and encourage us to visit the factory in the Welsh valleys – this started a decades-long relationship with Ashwood, one of our strongest soft upholstery suppliers.

As a multi-generation family business, how does Leekes navigate both continuity and change in today’s market?

We are delighted that we have so many long-serving team members across Leekes who have bought into the business ethos, built as it is on family values. With their experience, passion and support, they have helped our business to grow and strengthen.

What do you see as the biggest opportunities and challenges facing the furniture and home sector in 2025?

Sentiment. Our customers are typically older and more affluent than average, but concerns about possible income and council tax rises, or pension grabs, are creating uncertainty and an unwillingness to invest.

How do you think evolving customer expectations are shaping the way retailers like Leekes must adapt?

Leekes is renowned for its family legacy, what does it mean to you personally to carry this forward?

There is a big focus on levels of service from our customer base, whether that is meeting knowledgeable and experienced sales consultants in store, an unwillingness to accept long lead times, or the delivery and after-sales support available. It is becoming increasingly important to offer exceptional levels of customer care at all touch points.

It is both an honour and a tremendous responsibility. As the fourth generation of my family business, it is important to me that we leave a strong and sustainable legacy for the future.

What are your customers most passionate about right now, and how do their values shape your offerings?

Our customers are passionate about great service, quality and value, and that informs everything from the ranges we select to the support we provide before and after purchase.

How does Leekes nurture loyalty and connection within the communities you serve?

We are a large local employer in most of our store catchments and invest in the local communities we serve. As well as supporting local projects, charities and events, we host family weekends in store where the community can come together – the best example is our long-established Christmas Celebration, complete with live reindeer, the chance to meet Santa and lots of competitions and entertainment.

Are there emerging trends or requests from customers that have surprised you recently?

There has been a real push post-Covid for our stores to become dog friendly. Having trialled this in one of our stores, we are now in the process of extending this across our estate.

Looking back, what are some pivotal lessons or proud moments in your journey from M&S to leading the family business?

I was lucky enough to spend four years at M&S working directly for Steve Rowe, who went on to lead that business for many years. The passion, commitment and drive he demonstrated were exceptional, and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to witness this first hand; it gave me a love of retail that I have brought back to our business with me.

How do you foster a culture of growth and longevity within your team, and what advice would you give to emerging retail leaders?

Supporting and encouraging team members to achieve their potential is a real passion for me. We have countless examples of people who joined as part-time sales advisors while at school and progressed through the business to fill senior roles – our Head of Marketing & e-Commerce joined us at 16 to wash dishes and serve tables in the café of our flagship store and is still with us over 20 years later, having worked in a variety of store and buying roles.

Be visible and build relationships with your team at all levels.

Often the best solutions come from the people at the coal face.

How does your approach to sourcing and trend-spotting balance heritage with innovation?

It is important to ensure our range balances high levels of quality and craftsmanship with keen price points and exceptional value, enabling us to satisfy all budgets.

Whilst we remain big supporters of manufacturers continuing to make in the UK, we also source products from around the globe, and our Far East partners, who satisfy an international market, are often quicker to present innovation, whether that be cinema seating or enhancements such as heated seats, lumbar support and head tilt options.

HAFREN FURNISHERS Hafren Furnishers has marked an impressive milestone: 60 years as Wales’s largest independent furniture retailer. Its story is rooted in community, entrepreneurial grit and a deep respect for the customer. It all began with “Mike the Milk,” who turned casual doorstep conversations into the foundations of a thriving furniture business that has grown far beyond its early beginnings.

Today, Hafren remains proudly family-led, guided by principles of trust, quality and steady innovation across its flagship Llanidloes location and Aberystwyth showroom. In this conversation, Tim Morgan, Director at Hafren Furnishers, reflects on the journey so far, the values that continue to shape the business and the opportunities he sees for furniture retail as it evolves.

Tell us about Hafren Furnishers and how the brand began.

Mike Morgan, affectionately known as ‘Mike the Milk,’ started out delivering milk in Llanidloes, Powys. Customers kept asking about small furniture pieces, so he began selling stools and tables from his milk float. Demand quickly grew, and Hafren Furnishers was born. Sixty years on, our business is rooted in those same values: customer care, community, and reliability.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Take calculated risks. Be bold.

Do you have any personal favourites in your latest collection?

Where do you see the furniture industry heading and are there any styles or trends making a comeback?

Classic, reputable brands continue to prove popular thanks to a focus on quality and longevity. Playful, colourful designs attract attention and bring cheer to customers’ homes, showing that timeless style and innovation can happily coexist.

What’s next for Hafren Furnishers?

We aim to build on our reputation and position in the market, consistently enhancing the customer shopping experience both in-store and online.

Our Stressless studio and the Carlton Furniture Vintage Sofa Company area have been very popular. Classic brands, Parker Knoll, G Plan, Ercol, Duresta, remain favourites for their quality and longevity. Vibrant brands like Orla Kiely and Carlton Furniture inject playful colour and personality to our ranges.

What are you most looking forward to at the January Furniture Show?

Networking with other retailers and seeing the very latest collections and innovations all under one roof.

Any highlights from the past year?

We’ve reached 60 years of trading and are celebrating another successful year with our newest store in Aberystwyth, despite unpredictable economic times.

UFURNISH.COM Deirdre Mc Gettrick has a knack for turning everyday frustrations into fresh possibilities. As the founder and CEO of ufurnish.com, she’s built a furniture search and discovery platform that brings the entire market into one, easy-to-navigate space. Her journey began far from retail. After starting out in finance, she found herself struggling to furnish her first home and quickly realised there was no simple way to see everything available.

So she created it.

In this interview, Deirdre opens up about the opportunities she sees on the horizon for 2025, the trends redefining how we shop for our homes, and the story behind building ufurnish.com into the go-to destination it’s become.

What is it about the January Furniture Show that consistently draws you and the ufurnish.com team back, and what have you taken away from the event in previous years that has genuinely influenced your direction?

We love the opportunity to meet colleagues across the entire furniture industry supply chain. It’s the best place to connect and strengthen relationships.

Is there a moment or discovery from a recent JFS that has stayed with you, perhaps something that challenged your thinking or nudged the business in a new direction?

Listening to the inspiring female leaders at the Women in Furniture event really made me reflect on my own journey and how fast the industry is evolving. There are so many talented women leading organisations in ways we don’t often see, so I love hearing those stories being brought to the front.

From your vantage point as a techled platform, where do you see the biggest opportunities opening up for the sector in 2025, and what challenges do you think will require the most attention?

The biggest opportunities are coming through enhanced AI capabilities across the sector. In our space, it’s using AI to drive online shoppable experiences across property portals and publisher platforms.

Looking ahead, are there particular technologies or trends you believe every retailer should keep firmly on their radar this year?

Our Shop the Look technology, which integrates across property portals and publisher platforms, will turn home and garden imagery shoppable in a way nobody has seen before, connecting millions of UK consumers to contextual products for their home in real time.

When you look at current customer behaviour around home furnishings, what do you see people prioritising most, and how is ufurnish.com adapting to support those evolving needs?

Consumers are prioritising longevity and multifunctional furniture. There’s a very clear trend across 2025 towards this and that will continue into 2026.

How central is sustainability to the way you build partnerships and shape the future direction of the platform?

Very central. It’s an important consideration for consumers, and we are focused on providing them with the most detailed information possible to help inform their purchasing decisions.

Naturally, we can only achieve this if furniture retailers and manufacturers provide us with this detail in the first place.

Are there any collaborations or products you’ve come across at JFS that speak to your commitment to innovation and more responsible sourcing?

The Perfect Partner for Wellness and Health

In 2025 we’ve developed a collaboration with Harrison Spinks after meeting them at JFS. Their innovative and very British approach is extremely appealing and makes for excellent products.

What stand-out trends are you seeing rise in the furniture and interiors space as we move through 2025?

Warmth and texture are dominant trends, with softer, earthy tones such as cream and brown coming back, alongside natural wood materials with hints of copper and gold. Harder concrete and marble are being softened by curved lines and spheres.

The main consumer trend is that people are thinking more about redecorating their homes rather than moving, due to cost-of-living considerations. It creates an opportunity for the furniture industry, but we have to be mindful that people are very cost-conscious.

I genuinely believe that AI innovation will create much deeper connections across the industry in a meaningful way. We’re laser-focused on this as a tech business, and we’re seeing strong growth as a result of our AI-led user experiences.

What guidance would you offer to independent retailers or brands keen to make the most of these emerging trends?

You have to stay close to trend insights and data from the industry and overlay your own data on top of it. By doing that, you can be savvy in calibrating your business offering to meet market demand.

What first motivated you to launch ufurnish.com, and in what ways has your journey from finance to tech founder shaped how you lead today?

Is there a challenge you’ve had to navigate, an insight you’ve gained, or a success story from ufurnish.com that you feel might encourage other entrepreneurs or readers following a similar path?

The biggest challenge is that starting a business from scratch is hard. You have to be resilient and prepared to ride through challenging periods. There are no shortcuts, just focused, hard work to achieve your goals.

I created ufurnish.com after purchasing my first home. I used property portals like Rightmove and Zoopla to find my home and then was surprised to find there was no furniture aggregator in the UK that brought all the supply into one simple website. I was inspired to create that website and help connect the industry.
