MESSAGE FROM THE BLA PROGRAM COORDINATOR

MARTIN HOLLAND, PhD, ASLA BLA Program Coordinator

The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) is truly a special program; it is the only accredited undergraduate program offered in English throughout the entire nation, and is currently one of the largest academic programs teaching undergraduates landscape architecture across the world.

We have produced thousands of graduates over the decades, who, in turn, practice the craft of landscape architecture around the globe.

However, it is not the program’sa size or the global reach that makes the BLA such a special and unique program. Rather, it is the spirit of community and a sense of shared investment into our collective futures that defines the BLA. Simply stated, everyone within the LA building, be they faculty, staff, or students support each other to allow us to be the best version of ourselves. I hope that as you spend time within this program, you experience and contribute to this sense community.

MESSAGE FROM THE MLA PROGRAM

My friend, Wes Jackson, looking over a particularly striking landscape said that “the world will probably always be more beautiful than useful.” If that is the case, landscape architects may be unnecessary. In fact, I think that Wes is correct and also that the beauty needs to be revealed to be understood, appreciated, and defended. That is what landscape architecture does.

The Master of Landscape Architecture program elevates the scholarly practitioner. LA’s mission at the University of Guelph is “to excel at comprehensive and evidence-based education, innovation, and scholarship…” This means that our MLA program produces not only skilled practitioners, but innovators, scholars, and curious lifelong learners. And that is good, because landscape architecture is a profession that takes a lifetime to master!

In this report you catch a glimpse of the MLA program through recent accomplishments and activities. In a way this is like taking a single frame from a video clip - but know that the action continues. The MLA program is always changing. This report notes the retirements of two LA faculty members and the addition of a new professor. Throughout all of these changes landscape architects aspire to a world that is beautiful, useful, and cared for and they earnestly pursue these ideals.

The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) program is a professional undergraduate degree that combines design and science. It is the only accredited undergraduate landscape architecture program in Canada and it has an established international reputation for producing highly skilled landscape architects.

FACULTY PROFILES Nadia Amoroso

Nadia has always had a passion for fine arts, such as drawing and sketching, which later morphed in to design combining art and math. She was drawn to landscape architecture and all of its many possibilities, including the idea of being able to design and shape large outdoor spaces for the public to enjoy, such as waterfronts, plazas and other public spaces. Through her education she began working with different software programs and developed a passion for visual communication and data visualization.

2019-20 Notable Accomplishments • Invited by the ETH (The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), University of Zurich as an advisor to help establish a Master’s in Landscape Architecture Program • Recipient of SSHRC Connection Grant, SHHRC-SIG Exchange and SSHRCSIG Explore Grant • Secured an exhibition for selected MLA & BLA Students to display their work pertaining to creative mapping at the European Cultural Centre (ECC) in parallel with the Venice Biennale in Italy

Steven Clarke

Steven is a graduate of the Environmental Design and Landscape Architecture programs at the University of Manitoba, holding a Bachelor of Environmental Design and a Master of Landscape Architecture. A licensed landscape architect in British Columbia, Steven’s professional experience spans almost 25 years in design with a regional and global portfolio of projects in Canada, the United States, China, and Greece. His strength is his ability to bring diverse groups together to promote a shift towards regenerative and resilient communities through collaborative research, design, and action. Prior to joining the University of Guelph, he served as the Director of the UNLV Downtown Design Center (DDC) in Las Vegas, Nevada where he established the first multidisciplinary, grant-funded studio programme at the School of Architecture.

FACULTY PROFILES

Robert Corry

Dr. Corry teaches ecological principles for landscape design and his research investigates agricultural land conservation and reclamation of damaged lands for ecological and social consequences using principles and methods from landscape ecology. Dr. Corry is the director of the University’s Centre for Land & Water Stewardship. His publications range from assessing alternative landscape plans for ecological outcomes to informing agricultural policy to achieve multiple objectives.

Martin Holland

Martin’s scholarly interests lie at the intersection of landscape design, cultural studies and collective memory. He is particularly interested in how monuments, memorials and other sites of commemoration are used, managed and interpreted to guide, inform and influence, the public’s understanding of history and how it relates to the built environment.

FACULTY PROFILES

Sean Kelly

Sean Kelly’s specific interests include design-planning for places of destination, typically related to leisure and sport activities, especially those locations situated in mostly rural/remote and complex terrain (like mountains!). Sean is a ‘practice-focused’ instructor and tends to be involved in the instruction of skills & techniques development courses and activities attuned to securing ‘entry-level’ positions (for graduating students) in professional practice. He considers himself a “jack-of-all-trades” resource for students as he has successfully integrated three decades of practice with his academic involvement; this has afforded his participation on a diverse range of successful student projects and interests.

2019-20 Notable Accomplishments • Championed an award-winning student duo in the Brains & Brawn Design Challenge hosted by The Concussion Legacy Foundation of Canada • Coordinated the hosting of the CSLA’s Reconciliation Advisory Committee lecture session on “Reconciliation, Learning, and Landscape Architecture” • 2019 CELA Award for Outstanding Administrator • Initiator & Advisor in OAC’S Honey Bee Research Centre design competition, ultimately resulting in a 2019 Award of Excellence Winner for the HBRC design concept

Karen Landman

Karen Landman’s passion for gardening from a young age led her to her academic interests and career in horticulture and landscape architecture, and eventually to planning and geography. Karen also focuses on urban agriculture as part of the Nourishing Communities research team. This group consists of an international, interdisciplinary team of researchers who conduct research on food systems from different disciplinary views.

2019-20 Notable Accomplishments • Co-authored chapter titled, Peri-urban Agricultural Policies in Canada and France for the Routledge Handbook of Comparative Rural Policy • Co-authored Planning for the future? FACULTY PROFILES

Brendan Stewart

Throughout his years in practice, Brendan has been actively engaged in the academic, professional, and community spheres. He has been a regular guest lecturer, critic, and instructor at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University, and was an editorial board member of Ground Magazine, the journal of the OALA. Brendan’s research focuses on heritage conservation planning and design processes, cultural landscape theory, design history, and service learning and participatory design practices.

RETIRING FACULTY

Nathan Perkins

I arrived in Guelph in July 1990 having spent the previous three years at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The transition from a sprawling campus with 50,000 students to a ten-minute walk from end to end and 12,000 student University was altogether pleasant. The landscape architecture building was without pretention and the students – all 140 of them, (320 or so now) – were engaging and warm. There was no internet yet, so letters, phone calls, sometimes email and walks to the library were a daily ritual. Looking back through the haze of decades, the pace seemed slower, yet, the hours were longer.

There was still a ‘maker culture’ amongst students and faculty so there was often a physical product at the end of those long hours. And it was satisfying.

Proximity and sharing time with others created both the blessings and curses of a small community. Of all the changes that have occurred over the years, this would be the most significant and far-reaching to me. Perhaps using the metrics of business and productivity we have advanced, but the cost has been the conversion of all things into product. The process of interacting with others and creating, thinking, questioning, seem much less evident now in the rush and fleeting push to…what? Tweet, text and ‘opinionate’ I fear.

One of the most striking observations in my early years was how mature and learned and even worldly students were. Grade 13 really made a difference but some of that learnedness was the result of a slower pace that fostered discussion, digestion and thoughtfulness. The Italians who have so much to teach the world, have, I think, the answer in their slow food, slowdown approach to living. Landscape architecture has not

been immune to the faster and broader (and subsequently shallower) pace, yet, it is not entirely our fault. Because external pressures to produce product do not encourage activities that only result in more thoughtful approaches to living life, we reap what we sow. I was counselled early on to be engaged in the University and community and I have worked on an astounding number of initiatives with really smart and motivated people. If I had advice worth giving it would be for students and professionals alike to get out of the classroom, get out of the office and serve, in any capacity, others.

Lest the above seem too bitter and not so sweet, I have spent my many years around bright and capable people. Almost all of the students I have spent time with remind me what a blessing it is to be young, uncertain and blissfully uncynical.

Mostly because of them, I would like to believe I never took my job, my calling, for granted and that all my mistakes, boo boos and lapses were entirely my own. Own your fallibility, and humility, which is sorely lacking in many University professors, will always be your companion.

As I wrote elsewhere, I am looking forward to mid-day naps with the dogs (Mr. Boags and Brüne Hilda) and dinner at 5:30PM sharp. As Professor Jack Milliken, my mentor and friend, used to say, “keep the faith” and I’ll add, “be healthy and happy”.

RETIRING FACULTY

Larry Harder

The first LA course I ever taught at Guelph was in 1989. I finished teaching my last courses and advising all (but one) of my last grad students in May. I am retiring on September 1st 2020. That is 31 years! That is a long time. A REALLY long time.

of time. Many of you have heard me say this often too. As landscape architects we have agency: we have the skills, knowledge and values of environment, culture and design to intervene in the landscape to make better places. That is our job. That is the really awesome thing about LA.

In those 31 years I have taught something like 1800 students. Classes are a lot larger than they used to be, which is a teaching challenge. What I have missed about the smaller classes is knowing – and remembering – each student by name and knowing something of their own story.

What I regret about the big classes is that I don’t get to know names and stories so well. But the student body is also a lot more diverse than it used to be. And that is absolutely awesome!

I hope that this truth is the take-away from the lessons of history, the ecological restoration and land reclamation studios, the studios and MLA theses that have focused on issues of physical disabilities, mental health, gender, spiritual meaning in landscape, the experience of Indigenous peoples, the LGBTQ2IA+ community, habitat restoration, sea level rise, climate change, and others – and even the construction courses (you gotta build it!)

I have taught somewhere in the order of 30 courses, some of which do not even exist anymore, from the diploma level to PhD examining committees. For many I have been the “history guy.” For others I will be Thought of as “the construction guy.” Others will remember me as the “ecological restoration guy.” Lots of undergrads will remember me as “that design guy who we had for too many courses in a row.”

I have taught with almost every faculty member who has taught in the LA program since 1989 – a pretty awesome bunch. Throw in a smattering of equally awesome planning and CDE faculty. I have worked with many of the sessionals, who are also awesome, and have often been intimidated by the depth and richness of their professional and academic experience. I have taught with people who were once my students. That happens when you are around long enough.

That is awesome too!

I have often said that landscape architecture is like a three-legged stool: one leg is the environment, another is culture, and the third is design. Without all three legs, the stool falls down. None of these legs is unique to landscape architecture, but what IS unique is how landscape architects integrate them. Landscape architecture has a unique way of looking at the world. Landscape is a function of the interaction of environment and culture through the passage

Since 1989, the context for teaching LA has evolved and morphed with changing times, as the environmental emphasis shifts or deepens, or social concerns emerge or re-emerge, or the economy crashes and recovers. Each new student cohort brings new concerns and new ideas.

The profession changes. But what remains constant is the determination to make the world a better place. If I have any legacy, I would like it to be that I have imparted the absolute certainty that landscape architecture can make a difference.

I have been one instructor of many in the LA program.

My hope is that those whom I have taught will integrate what they have learned, not just from me, but from other instructors and their own experience and insight and passions, and take what they know into the wider world.

I have had the chance to take my personal conviction that LA can make a difference in the big human issues of our times by proving it in barrios in Central America and refugee camps in Lebanon and landscapes torn apart by environmental disaster or war. If there has been a consistent theme in my 31 years of teaching in Guelph, it is that absolute conviction that landscape architects can make a difference. I expect I will enjoy my retirement years watching you make a difference. You’ve got it! That’s awesome.

STAFF FEATURES Diana Foolen

Diana is responsible for providing administrative support for the Master of Landscape Architecture and the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture programs as well as SEDRD undergraduate courses. She works with the MLA and BLA Coordinators and is the main liaison with Office of Graduate Studies and Registrarial Services.

Diana’s main responsibilities are in the areas of program inquiries, promotion, admissions, awards, scheduling, final grades, course evaluations, program statistics and alumni records. Diana is also the SEDRD website content manager and editor.

Jennifer McCreary

As Administrative Officer of the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development, Jennifer manages the day-to-day operations of the School. She is responsible for providing financial, human resources, administrative and strategic support to the director and faculty members, and is also responsible for human resource activities, including ensuring adherence to employee agreements and establishing unit policies.

Christina Voll

Christina is responsible for the purchasing and accounting services in SEDRD, including processing all expense claims and travel reimbursements for faculty and students. Christina provides assistance with organizing the many special events hosted by SEDRD. She also processes hourly payroll, manages key access to Landscape Architecture and Johnston Hall and monitors the content to be displayed on the School’s digital sign.

What I love about the BLA program is the creative control that we get when designing spaces, the ability to design spaces that would help people connect with nature in a creative way while still considering its environmental impacts is what makes this program so enjoyable.

I have an interest and passion for design, the environment, and plants. I first heard of the BLA program by looking through the UofGuelph handbook. It’s fair to say there was no better place for me than here!

I’m interested in maintaining natural land as much as possible while making efficient design. It would be an honour to work alongside indigenous people to help preserve land through design and share their culture.

What I love about the BLA program is that it combines all the things that I am most passionate about like the built environment that we live in and how learning about a well-designed environment has an impact on the people that live there.

Hi everybody! My name is Emerson, I’m going into my third year in the BLA program. Some of my interests include gardening, computers (for both design and games), environmentalism, ecology, cities, and history.

As a social Coordinator, I was in a team of three to vitalize the community of the BLA and MLA students. My duties were to help prepare and inform all people in the program of social events, such as juice parties, a bake sale, Winterfest, and guest lectures.

MLA STUDENT FEATURES KIM BEECH

MLA 3 Mississauga, ON RESESARCH INTERESTS The goal of my research was to create guidelines that inform trail designers on how to establish a cultural heritage experience along the Beaver Valley Section of the Bruce Trail. My research was conducted through field observation, key informant interviews, and document review.

WHY I CHOSE THE MLA PROGRAM AT GUELPH I chose to complete my MLA degree at the University of Guelph initially because of the warm welcoming atmosphere of the professors in SEDRD. Very quickly my cohort became a family because of the small class sizes, encouraging nature of the studio, and our ability to push each other in a positive manner. My initial thoughts of the warm atmosphere was proven year after year as the Professors continuously had our best interests at heart and genuinely wanted to see growth in their students.

RESESARCH INTERESTS My research interests are vested in the history, theory, design, culture, and planning of landscapes. Specifically, I am keen on exploring and challenging the strategy and usage of design elements to create effective landscape designs. My current research explores the history and usage of attributing human emotions to species of plants, its effects on different landscapes in different parts of the world, and how this may be achievable in a contemporary landscape architecture.

WHY I CHOSE THE MLA PROGRAM AT GUELPH The MLA program at the University of Guelph has earned a fantastic international reputation and that was a defining influence on my decision to choose it. In addition to that, the City of Guelph offers a comfortable environment that balances the calmness I need to focus on my studies and the vibrancy of a city in terms of culture, relationships, and exploration.

RESESARCH INTERESTS My research interests lie at the intersection of corporate motivations and landscape intervention. Understanding corporate motivations and the contextual factors that influence them can help identify conditions in which the involvement of landscape architects would allow businesses to align themselves with appropriate landscape initiatives that result in authentic and meaningful engagement with communities.

WHY I CHOSE THE MLA PROGRAM AT GUELPH Having completed the BLA program at the University of Guelph, I knew that I absolutely loved the campus, city, and faculty. Guelph provides a unique experience through its tight-knit community while also providing students with access to worldclass resources and opportunities. The openess and ease of communication with faculty members has been instrumental in my success throughout my years here at Guelph.

BLA In Action

Brains and Brawn Design Challenge Fourth year Bachelor of Landscape Architecture students, Jack Mosquite and Emil Kovacevic were participants and award winners from the Brains and Brawn Design Challenge hosted by The Concussion Legacy Foundation of Canada and iBoost Zone.

The design challenge was a 24 hour event hosted by Ryerson University from February 7th to 8th with participants encompassing of teams competing from various South Ontario Universities. The design hack’s ultimate goal was to produce and present a concept and prototype of a solution for minimizing and avoiding physical contact in youth sports with an emphasis on concussion prevention. In competition with engineering, kinesiology and business students, Jack and Emil were the only ones who came with a design background and mindset. This ended up being their strength making them and their idea stand out from the completion. Jack and Emil worked continuously through the entire 24 hour period and produced and presented an idea which earned them the major prize of the competition.

Jack and Emil continued to refine and perfect their idea to submit for the follow-up fellowship program. After a month of reworking their initial idea they resubmitted and ended up winning one of four fellowship spots for the Concussion Legacy Foundation of Canada (CFL). Now Jack and Emil are currently doing research for the CFL while also having the opportunity to expand and implement their initial design idea entrepreneur style with guidance and resources available to them through the Concussion Legacy Foundation of Canada.

University of Guelph Landscape Architecture Students in New York City

UGLA In Action

UoG Landscape Architecture Takes NYC In early Fall of 2019, a group of BLA and MLA students from the University of Guelph participated in a field trip to New York City.

During this time, the LA students had an opportunity to visit various parks and public spaces within this urban mecca. The trip included visits to significant historical and contemporary parks and green-scapes that have shaped New York City and have made an impact to the landscape architectural field in the city.

Award-winning landscape architect, Ken Smith from Ken Smith Workshop, provided a walking tour of his Pier 15 project, located in the Lower East Side of the city. Design Associate, Joshua Seyfried of James Corner’s Field Operations, provided a tour of the High Line - a 2.3km elevated linear park on the west side of New York City - and ending the tour at the Vessel structure designed by English Architect, Thomas Heatherwick.

This learning experience was generously supported by the OAC Learning Trust and the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development, and was coordinated by Professor Nadia Amoroso.

MEMORY SCAPE final rehabilitation

This perspective view is shown from the proposed island. The panoramic shot is used to highlight the built features of the amphitheater and discovery centre and how they are immersed into the surrounding rehabilitated landscape.

The amphitheater takes advantage of the topography and creates a space that brings people in touch with the landscape while providing a place for a range of events and elevated views across the lake. The discovery center is a place for education and presentation, designed to emerge from the earth and blend with the surrounding landscape. Large glass windows, wooden beams and concreteare used in construction to highlight the material connection to the sites history.

WILDLIFE VIEWING DECK The OSSGA Student Design Competition recognizes the most innovative and impressive designs for the competition. This year, students were challenged to create site plans for FINAL SECTIONS CBM Aggregates’ Ayr Pit in the Township of North Dumfries. The 2019 Student Design Competition winners were announced at the OSSGA’s 2020 Conference & AGM in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

The north end of the lake offers an extensive littoral (shallow water) zone. This productive aquatic system provides food/habitat for a large variety of fish, invertebrate, amphibian, and bird species. BLA Students Receive Top Scholarships

LACF - ALAIN MONTAGNE SCHOLARSHIP The inaugural award of the Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation - Alain Lamontagne Scholarship in Landscape Architecture was presented for the first time to Beth Bray, 4th year BLA student. BLA alumnus Peter Kreuk, principal of Durante Kreuk in Vancouver, endowed this award in memoriam to Alain Lamontagne, who was a graduate of the BLA program in 2008 and a valued member of the dk staff. In attendance for the presentation were Alain’s family members and UofG professor emerita, Cecelia Paine, who presented the award on behalf of Peter and LACF. LACF SCHOLARSHIP RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN UofG professor emeritus, Cecelia Paine, and BLA program alumnus, Christine Abe, both members of the Foundation’s board of directors, presented the students with cheques of $1000 each. MLA student, Kendra Cheeseman and BLA student Grace Christie received the University of Guelph LACF Scholarship recognizing excellence in design. Affirming the quality of University of Guelph students, Kendra Cheeseman also received the LACF Peter Klynstra Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to a student affiliated with the Atlantic Provinces.

MLA In Action

ReDesignEd Educators Forum 2019 In November, international MLA student Diego Alvarez, participated in the ReDesignEd Educators Forum 2019 in Johannesburg, South Africa. This annual event exists to systematically re-examine design education and its outputs. The theme of the forum was What We Don’t (or Can’t) Teach, where participants explored and discussed the foundational building blocks of a designer’s essential knowledge through qualitative measures. Diego co-presented with professor Steven Clarke, their proposal for a book chapter entitled, Design Education and Responsibility: Teaching the Values that Drive Leadership. Diego also teamed with a panel of students from the University of Johannesburg and co-presented their findings at the forum which served to influence “The 2019 Johannesburg Declaration.” Developed at the forum by participants, this unanimously adopted document addresses the equally vital development of appropriate attitudes and behaviors essential for design professionals to thrive.

OALA members engaged with BLA and MLA students, sharing their personal stories about navigating the LARE exams and licensure process, continuing education opportunities and other topics.

!melk’s founding principal Jerry van Eyck is a globally respected lecturer, trained as a landscape architect and industrial designer and serving as a visiting critic at design institutions including the Harvard GSD, Yale School of Architecture, Columbia University’s GSAPP, and the Illinois Institute of Technology.

LA Symposium The 2019 Landscape Architecture Symposium was themed Representing Landscapes: Advancements in Visual Communications and Data Visualization.

The event, held at the University of Guelph, attracted a full house of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and professionals to listen and engage with an array of talented, well-accomplished international speakers, including: Andrea Hansen-Phillips, Alfredo Ramirez, Allison Daily, Brad Cantrell, and Maria Counts.

Gendered Social Citizenship As part of the 2019-20 Speaker Series, coordinated by Professor Nadia Amoroso, Ebru Ustundag from Brock University visited the University of Guelph to discuss “Gendered Social Citizenship: Ethics of Care and Praxis of Planning”. The Speaker Series takes place throughout the year at the University of Guelph and brings a variety of guest lectures and topics free for students to attend.

SEDRD Winter Social Party The School of Environmental Design and Rural Development’s Winter Social Party was held at the Italian Canadian Club in Guelph. The event is open to all graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, sessionals, staff and their guests in SEDRD (including Landscape Architecture, Rural Planning and Development, Capacity Development anx Extension, and Rural Studies).

Chris Grosset, Chair of the CSLA Reconciliation Advisory Committee visited the University of Guelph in January for a lecture that explored the formal and informal paths towards reconciliation thorugh learning and his practice as a landscape architect. Having worked alongside Indigenous communities in the Arctic and across Canada for 20 years, Chris has learned in their classrooms, on their land, and in their homes.

LA Networking Night The University of Guelph hosted their 3rd annual LA Networking Night on January 30th.

Designed to connect BLA and MLA graduating classes with industry professionals, this networking event offers the profession exposure to emerging practitioners, and students the opportunity to find potential opportunities post-graduation. The night included opening remarks from guest speakers, a ‘speed dating’ format, and time to mingle and chat with professionals about job opportunities, events in landscape architecture, and any other topics of interest.

It is a fantastic opportunity for students within the UofG as well as outside of Guelph to take a break from class and visit the city and engage in rural planning challenges and network with other aspiring and passionate planners.
