THAMES South Bank Complex The River Thames which flows through the City of London is the longest river in England at 215 miles long. The Thames is an important trade and transport route, it has been since prehistoric times. London's fame and fortune is due its river. Throughout the middle ages the Thames was one of London's main highways There is a curious but fascinating complex that is situated on the South Bank of the river Thames- The South Bank Centre and National Theatre A). A SOUTH BANK COMPLEX A Royal Festival Hall B Queen Elizabeth Hall Hayward Gallery D National Theatre A landscape of theatre, art and performance that wants to be read unlike any other part of the city is situated on the South Bank of the River Thames. The South Bank Centre complex of dramaturgical venues A that are situated between Waterloo Bridge and Hungerford Bridge. These programmes are closely connected to the neighbouring National Theatre D to create an environment that is one of kind within the city. D A C B WATERLOOBRIDGE HUNGERFORD BRIDGE NORMATIVE READING PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PublicPrivate Most readings of the city are as above, public and private spaces are normally quite easy to recognise and identity. The street being perceived as public and buildings being perceived as private. further reading of this complex on the South Bank shows that this environment operates in a completely different way and requires different analysis than just public and private or street and building. is read as street but in fact not a street at all. is read as building but holds a stronger connection to A than the buildings core programmes itself. A B STREET BUILDING BUILDING STREET STREETBUILDING STREET NEW READING FOYERS AND OBJECTS FoyerObject new way of reading this environment could be recognised as 'objects' and 'foyers'. Objects existing as the permanent elements of the complex, such as the auditorium or gallery spaces. These spaces are not open freely to the public and do not operate the same way as the 'foyer' spaces. Adaptable with the feeling hey are entirely public. The foyer spaces within the South Bank are designed with sense of continuity in mind, although this does not work to its fullest potential the area strives to interconnect and create feeling of one whole.
LANDSCAPE There is missing programme here- one that affects every one of us- one that we are all engaged in- one that has no elitism. Many of the programmes within the South Bank Centre only target specific part of the public and can be classed as high culture which does not interest many members of the community where as fashion indirectly effects us all and is ever part of our lives. What can National Fashion Centre contribute to the South Bank? Can this programme bring together the community and help create the continuity the complex has always strived after? STRATEGY Extended Foyer Back of House C Production/Manufacture D Extended Foyer By extending the terraces of the national theatre and the south bank centre further out towards the river Thames and connecting the public foyer spaces this fashion programme intends to connect and allow the arts and performance complex to achieve sense of continuity was originally designed to withhold. This insert builds on the existing urban fabric and pulls the gaps while imposing new fashion programme that engages all members of the public. A B D THE FASHION DOCK RECONNECTING THE SOUTH BANK Public Transportation Dock Service Dock The fashion dock not only reconnects the South Bank by creating continuity among the complex it also takes advantage of the River Thames and takes back to its original use in the prehistoric days. Using the strong connection has to the water as not only an aesthetic but as important trade and transport purposes. The public access via boat is crucial part of this programme as well as service access to work shops for materials and products being shipped out. Replacing the use of cars, lorries, trains for water transport and using the river Thames the way once was. A
