Vienna Choi Anzac Day is the annual commemoration of the first landing of Australian and New Zealand soldiers in Gallipoli during World War I. Held on April 25th, it honours the sacrifices of the Anzac soldiers. The day features dawn services, wreath-laying, a moment of silence, parades, and the tradition of baking and sharing Anzac biscuits. This year, due to adverse weather, the ceremony was held indoors, with the attendance of distinguished guests like the Australian Consul-General, Mr Gareth Williams. Students played an active role, with the Secondary vocal ensemble performing ‘All of me’ by Kylie Penderson and wreath-laying from students from every grade.

The reading of ‘In Flanders Field’ by Sky Nguyen, and the playing of "The Last Post” by Adrian Koo gave everyone a chance to reflect and remember.

Mother's Day is a special day to honour and appreciate the women in our lives who have made a difference. It is a day about expressing love, gratitude, and admiration for our mums and/or other significant women whose care shaped us into who we are. This celebration dates back to Ancient Greece, Rome, and early Christianity.

This year, Mother’s day fell on the 12th of March, and many of us showed our appreciation by giving cards, flowers, gifts, or just spending time with the special women who take care of us. It's a day to pamper and spoil our mums, making them feel loved and appreciated for all that they do.

However, Mother’s Day has also receives lots of criticism for being highly commercialized, with the card industry earning between 6 to 7 billion USD a year. What do you think?

battle of the books BOB, which stands for Battle of the Books, is a competitive event where schools engage in live battles to test their knowledge of book trivia. HK Battle of the Books is an exciting competition that pits schools against each other to determine the ultimate book trivia champion.

This competition welcomes participants from both international Primary and Secondary schools. This event aims to expose students to a diverse range of reading material, foster their teamwork skills, and most importantly, make reading an enjoyable experience.

Our team consisted of 7 girls. There are 5 - 6 schools in each group. The winner of the semi-finals goes to the finals, and the finals determine the winner of the competition. The AISHK team was very lucky to be able to get into the finals, where we faced 5 other schools. We went up against West Island School, German Swiss International School, Renaissance College, Shatin College and Hong Kong International School. All of these schools were very talented, and it was a nail-biting experience watching the rounds. There were many impressive rounds, with no questions answered incorrectly. After a lot of hard work and close competition over 15 rounds, Sha Tin College took the win. Our team was very proud and grateful for the unforgettable experience.

All of the members in our team had so much fun reading books and having meetings. We are very excited for next year’s BOB!

teamlab hong kong Recently, I visited teamLab. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at TeamLab Botanical Garden in Osaka last year and was extremely excited about checking out a different exhibition. It was a very immersive experience which connected art to nature. I was excited to see what they would bring to the city I call home. The exhibition was stationed at Tamar Park in Admiralty and the entire park was filled with enormous glowing eggs that changed colour. The eggs spread across the park and all the way into the water. From afar, the eggs looked small, but I felt tiny, almost insignificant, when I stood against them up close. The exhibition is only open at night because that’s the only time when you can fully be engaged with the art. It was very relaxing, just like walking through a park.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience and it reminded me of my travels.

In Term 2, over 20 students took part in a Sunday session helping out at the Life Commitment Charity Club. The charity’s purpose is described on its website as follows: ‘In Sham Shui Po District, which has an aging population and severe poverty rate, there is a problem of elderly poverty. There are also many elderly people living alone and two-elderly families hiding among them.

They do not know how to use existing social resources to seek help. In view of the current limited number of residential places provided by the government and different social welfare agencies, community elderly care or home service resources are particularly important. In view of this, the Joy Society established a service center in Sham Shui Po in 2017.

It is rooted in the district and is elderly-oriented. It contacts single and elderly families in need and provides considerate care so that they can live in their own homes. Live your old age in a familiar community and live a rich and dignified life.’ https://www.hkl3c.org/%E9%97%9C%E6%96%BC%E6%88%91%E5%80%91 The students teamed up in groups of 3, with every group containing a Cantonese speaker. They then visited up to 5 households, taking each elderly resident necessities such as cooking oil and toiletries. The Cantonese speakers did an excellent job of translating for the students and the elderly residents. Each group spent about 15 minutes chatting, sharing and learning a little about each other.

When the visits came to an end and the groups met back at the charity’s office, every single student said it was a worthwhile experience. They said they felt gratitude, inspired and more knowledgeable about a section of society whom they did not know much about. They realised how much wisdom was in that community and they felt lucky to listen to the advice and information that was shared. Many students spoke of the privilege they felt at being involved.

We are grateful to Hazel, who organised the event. She did an outstanding job managing the logistics, liaising with the charity and getting everyone prepped on the day. She checked attendance, filled bags, grouped us, told us what to expect, advised us on respectful interactions, translated for the charity liaison and let everyone reflect on the experience as a group at the end. Thanks to her for her impressive leadership. Thanks must also go to the Life Commitment Charity Club for facilitating such a large group of volunteers.

It truly was a privilege and we all agreed that we got as much or more from it than the elderly recipients. It was a great day and highlighted the reasons why Y(ouths) E(xperiencing) S(ervice) Club is so important at our school. If you have the opportunity, you should get involved.

The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson, is about Bel. She is eighteen and has been haunted by her mother's enigmatic absence her whole life. Baby Bel was left alone in the car when Rachel Price disappeared sixteen years ago, leaving no witnesses in her wake. Since Rachel vanished, Bel has been certain that she is dead.

When her family consents to participate in a true crime documentary about the case, the matter is brought up once more. However, everyone is taken aback when Rachel emerges midway through the filming. Bel isn't convinced that she is speaking the truth, even if she has a tale about what happened to her.

n k o o o o BBook nookk Jane’s thoughts on this book: Although this book is somewhat lengthy and a bit of a slow burner, I believe the characters and the action will keep you interested. It was sufficient to keep me interested, at least!

There were several turns and twists. The characters were fantastic. It was an intriguing idea. This family drama novel is packed with untrustworthy individuals.

I assumed I understood everything and had anticipated some of the turns, but there was a lot I had overlooked.

Bel, the main character, is someone I really loved. Bel Price had known all her life that

her mother had disappeared, leaving her behind in the car.

That's why she comes off as a little stern at times. She's obviously supposed to be a little unlikeable, but the best characters are usually a little unlikable in my opinion. Although there isn't nearly as much romance in this novel as in any of Holly Jackson's others, it's something you don't miss. There is someone who follows her around with a camera to record her research for the true crime documentary and Bel does have a crush on him, but he’s more of a buddy.

n k o o o o BBook nookk Natasha’s thoughts on this book: I definitely loved this book. It was full of plot twists and it kept me on the edge of my seat. I love how Bel is so determined to find the truth, and it reminds me a lot of Pip. I loved the romance subplot between Bel and Ash. It was super cute and just added some fluff to the seriousness. I liked the part where Bel just finds out all the truths of her family and how they had all been lying to her the whole time. The Price family secrets. It did feel like a little bit of a rip-off of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder but condensed into one book. Apart from that, absolutely amazing writing from Holly Jackson.

THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES There has been a change in preparations for the 10th Hunger Games and students will be responsible for mentoring the tributes. Coriolanus Snow, an 18 year old student, is disappointed that his tribute is Lucy Gray Baird, a girl from District 12.

But after Lucy’s performance of defiance at the reaping, he believes that they may have a chance. Through the many challenges they face, it will be revealed who is a songbird and who is a snake. This movie, based off the prequel to the amazing Hunger Games trilogy, is truly an adventure.

One of my favourite things about the movie was the superb acting by Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler (and the rest of the cast too!). We really get to see the emotions these characters are feeling and they did a wonderful job bringing them to life. I really liked the dynamic between the characters. The siblings, the best friends, it is all so curious. I loved the hope of escaping and winning was also a theme I really liked throughout the movie.

We can see a clear difference between the 10th Hunger Games and how the Capitol is still a mess and the 74th where everything is in place and the Capitol is in full control. The only negative about the film is that it felt rushed and some fantastic parts of the book were cut.

This is a wonderful movie, especially for Hunger Games fans and it is the perfect origin story President Snow. He goes from a boy who is barely making it in the Capitol to the most tyrannical President Panem has ever seen. The way Lucy Gray has affected him and his future is just so interesting. I love the parallels between Lucy Gray and Katniss, which I think has something to do with the way Snow then treats her. I would absolutely recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys plot twists and intricate stories.

INTERHOUSE BASKETBALL We had our Interhouse basketball final on the 24th of May. Jaca won both junior matches, 14-4 for the girls and 17-14 for the boys. The senior boys' game finished 10-11 to Wattle, whilst Euca won 9-2 in senior girls.

Numerous excellent junior athletes, including Lilian Pilgrim, Adrian Chan, Henry Zhang, Jacky Zhao and Jasper To were present. Two of the top players among the seniors are Isabella Powell and Justin Yu from year 10.

All in all, it was a team effort, and we would want to thank every player that took part.

acamis Being host to ACAMIS soccer this year was made even more special with victory for the boys, in an exciting final against Dallian, and a third place for our girls A team.

The boys’ final started with a bang, as Dalian International School took an early lead. But not to be deterred, we fought back to take a 2-1 halftime lead through a couple of excellent strikes from Cai McGunnigle. In the second half, we stretched our lead further through a brilliant header from Kester van Gaalen and an absolute banger from Cai, which completed his hat-trick. To cap it all off, Hamlyn Chou scored a cracking last-minute penalty, after which the boys’ celebrated in style in front of the AISHK crowd.

The day then got even better, as our Girls’ B team and the Boys team were awarded the spirit of ACAMIS award from the other competing teams, due to the manner in which we conducted ourselves both on and off the pitch.

The following players were named in the All-team tournament team, Cai McGunnigle, Harry Toller and Justin Yu for the boys and Billie ‘Clan’ McLeod, Maddi Stainer and Sienna Foyn for the girls’ teams.

The tournament was a great success and the players would like to thank Mr Tait, Ms Weston, Ms Lam and everyone else for their terrific organisation of the event, as well as Mr Man, Mr Mui and Mr McGunnigle for their coaching and cheerleading over the weekend.

This year’s ACAMIS soccer was a truly unforgettable experience for all of the players. We always remember that if we play hard and play fair, then everybody wins. We are so proud to represent the Kangaroos and for all the great things that wearing the green, black, and gold of the Aussie school represents.
