A little insight into our Vintage Moroccan rug collection, woven by hand and passed along through many generations of women
Moroccan rugs have a rich history that stretches back centuries,
rooted in the traditions of the Amazigh tribes of North Africa Originally woven for practical purposes - providing warmth in the Atlas Mountains and protection from desert sandsthese rugs quickly became treasured heirlooms, passed down through generations Each piece is entirely handmade, with artisans using age-old techniques on simple wooden looms, often working for weeks or even months to complete a single rug
What makes Moroccan rugs so distinctive is their storytelling quality. The symbols, patterns, and motifs are not random; they often carry meaning tied to nature, protection, fertility, or daily life Natural dyes from plants, berries, and minerals give the wool its earthy palette, while the textures range from plush and shaggy to flatwoven and lightweight, depending on the region and style. From the iconic Beni Ourain rugs with their soft cream wool and geometric lines, to the vibrant Boucherouite rugs made from recycled textiles, each type reflects the landscape and culture of the area where it was created.
Today, Moroccan rugs have found their place in homes around the world, valued not only for their history and artistry but also for their versatility. They complement both traditional and modern interiors, adding warmth, character and a sense of timelessness to any space Whether layered casually in a living room, or used as a bold statement piece in a dining area, or bringing softness to a bedroom,

When we look at the designs of these rugs, perhaps we have some insight into what life was like for the woman who created it Some are repetitive and geometric - a form of symmetry and order Some are more freeform, artful and abstract. Many times we see symbols like teapots, mountains, people, and even animals woven into the rugs Often times the design changes throughout the rug, maybe indicating a different sentiment or season.
