The main users of the site are children, particularly during the day therefore we need to design something that facilitates their play, and does not limit the space they have The sun is at its harshest in the afternoon and comes across the site The main viewing points into the space come from the existing pavilion, the classroom and near the red train

DESIGN INTENT Due to the high use of this site, particlarly with children who love to play and run around, we decided that does not impede on the usability of the space, and maintains the flow of the area as we all know.

We considered the use of the minimal surface used in Case study 2. This allowed us to have a large, expansive opening with a slender structure, which ensures that the pavilion does not invade the space. This however still manages to provide shade the space underneath.

We found that the minimal surface was somewhat limiting in the ability to play around with the form. To allow the fluidity of the design, and to ensure that the pavilion can provide more or less shade, curves were easier to work with. Control points can be moved in the minimal surface mesh, however, they provide more rigid and sharp angles, which loses the smoothness of the shape.

DAY USE

During the day, the primary function of the pavilion is to provide shade. Children are the most common users therefore we decided to consider altering forms, depending on the position of the pavilion in the site

NIGHT USE
