01 SA N TA A N A RES I D E N T I A L COMMUNITY INFLUENCED DESIGN THIRD YEAR - SPRING SEMESTER SEMESTER DESIGN PROJECT + DD SET (SEPARATE)

In this project, we were tasked with creating a multi-family residential housing for the community of Santa Ana. Through thorough research and site analysis, it was imperative to think about the surrounding community.

Thus, this design really focused on a modular design, and how community design can be integrated within a large-scale project. Specifically when looking at the site and the community, unemployment rates were high, and small businesses were being pushed out by big commercial companies. To help resolve this issue, I integrated a broken-up commercial level that would allow small businesses to populate and a childcare center for parents to drop their children off so they could pursue their individual careers. These small implementations are what I thought could be beneficial for the surrounding community, and start to create a sense of community support, not only for the residents but also surrounding business owners.

Architecturally, there was an emphasis on creating visual connections and allowing people to fill in this space. I focused on a modular design that later developed into clusters. The clusters were formed in such a manner that the building expressed itself outwardly which allowed for connections with the neighboring site and train station. I specifically looked at how these clusters connected or linked through the corners. I allowed the corners to be opportunities for community spaces like recreational rooms, outdoor lounge spaces, gyms, and community gardens. Moreover, allows the project itself to comes to life when people utilize the space.

This project took into consideration many site influences that include access to the project, orientation of the project, and sun exposure. During the site visit, I realized that the top road was more level than the steeper bottom road. With this, I used the top road to provide public access to the tower and the bottom road for private parking for the scientist. This played into the orientation of the site, as the public space run parallel to the contour lines and the private spaces ran perpendicular to the contour lines. Thus, as you enter as a visitor you are met with the beautiful mountain range of Mt. Wilson and are able to see into the public scientist’s lab and office. Allowing the visitor to experience and witness the work within this project. Whereas the private programs point to LA and offer a different experience at a higher elevation.

Lastly, sun exposure was taken into consideration as the site is covered with tall pine and oak trees. The natural shade allows for a comfortable experience for visitors walking into the site. As you go up the tower the sun exposure increases, allowing for optimal lighting for program like the living rooms and the kitchen.

My proposal consisted of a tower with cantilevering elements. The tower provided many advantages for the site as it left a lower footprint and impact on the site. As well as offering different viewpoints at different elevations. The tower consisted of a service/circulation core that allowed for vertical circulation in the project. Connected to the service core, are bathrooms and public bathrooms to propose a consistent and clear plumbing line in my project. Cantilevering from the core are served spaces such as the dayroom, kitchen, and the scientist’s rooms.

In my project, my main concept was the interaction between curves and a defined grid. The main grid I used was produced by aligning the vertical grid lines to the structures of the tower and the horizontal running parallel to the tower. This allowed a base for me to start introducing curves into my plinth. At first, I used various splines to create this dynamic between concave and convex which later produced these rationalized arcs that conform to the grid and helped to break down the larger forms. This interaction, allowed a rhythm through my plinth connecting the major entry points which further led to this crossed circulation path. In reference to the relationship between my plinth and tower, I wanted to dissolve the tower on the ground level making a continuous flow from the site to my tower. Creating this relationship between my plinth and tower as a unit. In my tower, I wanted to keep the same grid I used for the plinth so that in the plan view of the tower it would look like a reflection of what was below. I created this open floor plan within each floor allowing this thoughtful flow of how I wanted students and faculty to circulate through. Creating these modules that allow students and faculty to circulate freely. Lastly, with my facade, I took inspiration Ardmore residences and from banco de Londres. I wanted to create this layering effect within my facade to create this depth. I also wanted to create this vertical continuity connecting program spaces through double height cut out exposing the structural gird.

04 HANDS ON PERSONAL INTERESTS! Personally, hobbies play a huge role in my creativity process. They provide a valuable opportunity for me to explore different forms of expressing creativity.

But most importantly, they offer a break from the rigor of architecture courses.

Moreover, hobbies pesonally provide a platform for me to experiment in a lowstakes environment, fostering a sense of playfulness and curiosity. Whether it’s cooking a new recipe, playing around with ceramics, or through meticulous crocheting. My various hobbies play an integral role in my creative process, and ultimately help create better well rounded projects.
