Jane Addams, America - 1931 She was born in Illinois at 6 september 1860 and died in Chicago at 21 may 1935. She was the youngest of eight children born, Sarah Addams her mother died when Jane was two years old. At four years old she contracted a Tuberculosis of spine, it’s handicap for her all life. In her teens Jane had big dream and decided to become a doctor, for help the poor. She loves reading like books of Dicken. Jane spent her first years of medicine but she is health problem and a nervous breakdown.

Jane Addams was the second woman to receive the peace prize in 1931 because she founded the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919.

She built the Hull House in Chicago to help the immigrants from Europe. Addams worked to help the poor and children until to stop the use of children as Industrial laborers.

She was the first female president of the National Conference of Social Work, she created the National Federation of Settlements. But she was critical because she was considered as a dangerous woman because of her speeches and because she forced the peace because she knows that a war will happen. She traveled and delivered lectures urging the leaders of the world to end war. She published a book untitled “Newer Ideals of Peace” where she gives her point of view of the peace and social reforms for the underprivileged. Moreover, she attended of the International Congress of Woman at The Hague in the Netherlands.

Emily Greene Balch, America - 1946 Biography : Emily Greene Balch was an American economist, sociologist and pacifist. She was born in 1867 in Boston and she died in 1961. She was the daughter of Francis V, a brilliant lawyers and Ellen Balch. In 1889, she graduated in Bryn Mawr College. Then, she studied economics and sociology at Harvard University, the University of Chicago, Berlin and Paris. She became a professor of economy and political science at Wellesley College in 1896. Emily Greene Balch dedicated the rest of his life to his feminist and pacifist commitment. She participated in movements for women’s suffrage, for control of child labor and for racial justice.

Historical context : During the 20th century, Emily Greene Balch knew the First World War and the Second World War. She was hostile to the entering the war of the USA in 1917. At the start of the First World War in 1914, she participated in the peace movement and began collaborating with Jane Addams. They founded the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919. During the period between the wars, she helped with her talents the government, international organizations and particularly with many projects of the League of Nations. For example, the disarmament, drug control or the internationalization of aviation. After the Second World War, she gave her support for the creation of the ONU and the UNESCO.

A radical champion of peace : her The cause that she defended was the oppression and the persecution who have been fight against fascism. She focused on immigration, consumption, and the economic roles of women. Although Miss Balch had always been concerned with the problem of peace and had followed carefully the work of the two peace conferences of 1899 and 1907 at The Hague.

In 1935 Emily Greene Balch she created and became leader of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.

Indeed, the excesses of nazism caused Emily Balch to change her strong pacifistic views and to defend the fundamental human rights.

She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 for the contribution of her life’s work for disarmament and peace. She warned against fascism, and criticised the western democracies for not trying to stop Hitler's and Mussolini's aggressive policies. But the US government doesn’t congratulated her because they see her like a as dangerous radical .

Personal opinion : We admire her because she was courageous to be against America. She is prestigious because she defend women, she want to show the working conditions of young person. She helped everyone that is adults or kids, at different level. She was pacifist and defend her cause without violence. She has a real investment in the cases who meant a lot to her.

Betty Williams, Ireland - 1976 Biography : She was born on the 22th May 1943 in Belfast ( Northern Ireland). She is actually alive and is 73 years old. Betty is catholic. She is the president of the World Center of Compassion for Children International and she created a peaceful mouvement call Community of People Peace . She fight for women's and children’s rights. She received the Nobel peace Prize in 1976.

Context : During the 60’s, Northern Ireland know a period of civil war called “the Troubles”. This war oppose the Nationalists/Republicans to the Loyalists/Unionists. The Nationalists/Republicans are for the unification of Northern Ireland to Republic of Ireland (catholic). The Loyalists/Unionists a mostly protestant want that Northern Ireland stay in the United Kingdom. “The Troubles” was very brutal : million people were killed by the different paramilitary groups like the IRA (Irish Republican Army loyalists). In 1976, a great demonstration was organized in Belfast. Three children was killed by a car under the eyes of Betty Williams. It was a shock for her and she decided to react. She organized some demonstrations for stop violence in Northern Ireland.

With Mairead Corrigan, she created the Community of People Peace which supported

by more than 20.000 women. When she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976, the world started to interest to Northern Ireland.

She started a peace petition. On the 10th January 1976, she’s been witness to murder of three child. They’ve been hit by a car. She was in his own car when she heard gunshots. She’s been touched so much that she started a peace petition two days later. She obtained 6.000 signature.So for his efforts, she’s been beneficiary of Nobel Peace Prize.

Personal opinion: Betty Williams is admirable, she has seen and lived things which can be shocking. She defended all her life the women’s and children’s rights at the risk of his life. Her cause is important because she touch a reel problems, the children and women are often beaten, mistreat and that it’s intolerable. The women and children are equal in every way. Yes, we are ready has to beat us for this cause because it is right and do not touch just the Northern Ireland but the world.

Mairead Corrigan, Ireland - 1976 She was born the 27th january 1944 in Belfast in the Northern Ireland. She is the co-founder with Betty Williams and Ciaran Mckeown of peace movement (1976) in her country. In 1976, she received the Nobel prize.

Mairead Corrigan grew up in a catholic community in Belfast. She worked at a local factory at the age of 16 because her parents couldn’t paid for her schooling anymore. She take part of the peace movement after three children of her sister died, killed in a car accident by an irish Republican.

At the time, the demonstrations between the Republicans and the British forces were raging. One day, this caused the death of the relatives of Corrigan. It was in a climate of tension that she decided to create a pacifist movement against violence.

found a movement bringing together women who are in favor of peace. They are 10,000 at the first event and 35,000 at the second. The forces of the order the repressions. Finally, in 1976, she received the Nobel Peace Prize for solving the problems in Ulster.

We admire this person because she has been able to annihilate violence without using violence, which is rare. This is the female gandhi. It brought together thousands of women on behalf of a cause. We are 3 girls in the group, and Marco is of the same opinion as us. This woman is a model for us. We can inspire ourselves to defend the cause of women, of peace. Peace must be preserved through a universal coalition.

Mairead Corrigan proved to us that this was possible. We would like to do the same thing as this woman. Who does not dream? We would and we can, Corrigan proved it.

Indeed, being poor, a woman, she managed to defend her cause. Moreover, she had a well-defined religion. Religion is therefore not a barrier to the resolution of problems.

Jody Williams, America - 1997 Jody Williams is an american teacher, she was born on 9th october 1950 in Putney (Vermont).

In 1984 she received a master from Johns Hopkins’s school. After that, Jody became co-coordinator of the Nicaragua and Honduras education project and also deputy director of the medical aid for El Salvador.

She has been a life-long advocate of freedom, self-determination and human rights.

She won the nobel peace prize in 1997 for her struggle with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. We have here a great representation of the fact to “defend our point of view”. She works hard for her battle.

The historical context It is true that after many wars and conflicts, our world also holds many antecedents and consequences of these terrible events.The landmines aim to alleviate the suffering caused by armed conflict and to protect civilians in wartime.

In the early 90s, landmines had caused a serious crisis. So much on the human, medical or social level.

Indeed, several associations like the Red Cross and others, had pointed this terrible dysfunction. An "epidemic" that wounded, killed, and made suffer.

These weapons, at the expense of men, are incapable of distinguishing between civilians and soldiers. They continue to strike after that the armed conflicts have ceased, killing and maiming then, mainly civilians.

Each year 25,000 people are injured.

The effects of the landmines are not done by accident : these weapons are constructed in such a way that their explosion kills or mutilates their victim.

However, associations, hospitals and others no longer wanted to close their eyes or accept that such weapons could still be harmful. Then they demand a total ban on mines.

In tribute to the efforts they deployed to campaign to ban landmines.

Her fight Jody Williams became the Female Nobel Peace Prize for her work to band, clear and stop the production and the sale of anti-personnal mines. She served as the founding coordinator of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) until February 1998.

What is the ICBL ?

The ICBL (International Campaign to Ban Landmines) began its work in 1991. Its object was to bring about an international ban on landmines. Furthermore, governments all over the world were to be urged to finance mine clearance. In 1997, the ICBL had the support of over 1,000 organizations in 60 countries. It is with this Campaign that Jody received the Prize. Her first fight as an activist was during the March against Vietnam in 1970 and after that, the fight for women rights was also very important for her.

Through her career spanning activism and education from Central America to Africa, and now through the Nobel Women's Initiative, Jody continues to fight for disempowered people worldwide.

She said : « If you teach people different ways of looking at this little planet we all share, you can change the world. Anything is possible if you believe it. You’ve just got to get up off your butt and participate in creating change. »

Landmines

Our personal opinion We admire Jody Williams because she fights for her opinions and she is not afraid to make it. She defends a real cause and her cause is rightful ! She wanted to forbid the landmines and it’s justified because this weapons are dangerous and fatal for humans lives.

We could be ready to fight like Jody Williams because she and many other people changed the world, just because they want to and have to, we want to be brave like them.

Hope is possible if we all decide that silence and indifference are inacceptable. We all have our part of responsibility in the world but it is up to each and every one of us to stand up to fight for what is right and fair.
