NASSC WELCOME

June 7, 2019 Welcome to the 26th Ferguson North American Sand Soccer Championships (NASSC)! For the next three days, you get to participate in and spectate the world’s largest beach soccer festival with almost 900 soccer teams that will compete on 63 fields over 25 city blocks. Take a stroll to the north and south of the soccer action and you’ll find our other sidekick beach sporting events including: beach field hockey, beach flag football, beach kickball and beach volleyball. We encourage you to take advantage of the miles of Virginia Beach Boardwalk, restaurants and entertainment this weekend. NASSC is more than just the best soccer weekend of the year, it exists as the largest fundraiser for the local soccer community. The Hampton Roads Soccer Council (HRSC), the tournament host, is a 501c3 non-profit organization that operates the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex – a premier 24 field complex located in Virginia Beach. All the proceeds generated from NASSC provide the soccer complex with facility enhancements and field renovations for the local soccer community and visiting clubs to enjoy. Some of the projects we have recently completed include: renovating two grass fields per year, installing solar lights on the pathways and pavilions and adding a 1,500 square foot sand soccer storage building. NASSC allows HRSC to keep rental rates low, so soccer stays affordable for families in the region. Thank you to our generous corporate partners for supporting the local soccer community. To Ferguson – thank you for leading the way as our title sponsor! This year’s presenting sponsor is the City of Virginia Beach – we truly believe we have the best beach in the world! We would also like to recognize our gold level and above sponsors including: All-Pro Tactical, Beachside Social, Best Western Plus, Commonwealth Brewing Company, iFLY Virginia Beach, One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, ShoreBreak, Sand Soccer Gear, Sentara, Soccer World, Tropical Smoothie Café, Virginia529, the YMCA and Ynot Italian for their extra special support. Lastly, we give our sincere thanks to the many other outstanding companies, media partners, and vendors listed in this program. We also want to give a special thank you to the many volunteers who have loyally supported and helped NASSC grow into the world class event that it is today. We have truly been lucky to have so many people in our local soccer community that roll up their sleeves and lay out a red carpet to create a magical weekend for our visitors. Thank you to the HRSC affiliate soccer clubs: Beach FC, Over Thirty Soccer League (OTSL), Southeastern Virginia Women’s Soccer Association (SEVWSA) and the Virginia Rush for your continued support of NASSC. Thank you for joining us for the Ferguson 26th North American Sand Soccer Championships. We look forward to helping you create new beach soccer memories with your teammates, friends and family. Have a great weekend! Sincerely,

NASSC is honored to feature, as its centerpiece, the 2019 “U.S. Open”, pitting elite international and national pro/am beach soccer teams, battling in fierce action in the Beach Stadium, June 7-9. Historically, Pro Beach Soccer held its first “U.S. National Finals” at NASSC 2001 in Virginia Beach to identify the top pro/am beach soccer team in the nation. NASSC transformed those National Finals in to the “U.S. Open” in 2003. The current format includes 16 of the most highly qualified teams who applied. Last year’s winner, Maryzillians, are back at NASSC ’19 but Finalist Great Lakes Beach Soccer is leading the chase to knock them off of the top spot! Of significance, international entries from the Colombia, Canada, and Peru should add to the intensity, while members of the USA National team are part of various teams competing in our flagship event! Previous Opens have wowed stadium crowds as competition reaches higher levels every year, consistent with the international growth of the sport, under FIFA and Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW).

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH NASSC? Cyndy: I have been involved with sand soccer about 23 years as a volunteer. My husband Ken was our son’s coach when sand soccer was in the beginning years. That was the spectator years for me. We would volunteer with Marty and Deb Snyder at first field marshaling. Then we were hooked. Ken died in 2001, but I then was more vigilante than years before, and spent the weekends under the tent with Deb. She was a great teacher and volunteer. As years went by she became very ill and I took over running the tent. Here we are over 19 years later. HOW MANY FAMILY MEMBERS AND GENERATIONS JOIN YOU AT NASSC WEEKEND? Cyndy: There will be three generations that join up for sand soccer weekend. WHAT ARE THEIR NAMES AND HOW LONG HAS EACH ONE BEEN INVOLVED? Cyndy: Brigitte, age 46, playing 24 years and her husband, Brian, who played, coached, and runs the tent too; Kelly, age 43, playing 24 years; Colleen, age 40, playing 22 years. The girls have won more than that, 16 championships in different divisions. Kenneth, age 36, 22 years…Won first place in the teen years twice and Men’s League Championship three times. The Three girls are playing together in the over 40’s this year, since the youngest sister will be forty in May! She’s had to play in the over 30’s the past four year, without her siblings. She has also played co-ed too. I’ve also heard that they may throw in the towel, we’ll see. Kyle Bradley Richards cousin, 11 years, he brought down his college players down from NJ to play with Ken. He now lives in Indianapolis, Indiana and won’t be attending. Caroline - 15, Caitlin - 13, and Carleigh - 11 are the ages of the three grands that are playing this tournament. The adult children have played on different teams throughout the years, whether it has been co-ed, over thirty, over forty, college age, and Ken came through the youth and teenage years too. COULD YOU EXPLAIN YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS’ ROLES AT NASSC? EX: DO CERTAIN FOLKS ONLY DO STAT MATS, FIELD MARSHALLING, ETC? Cyndy: Funny you ask what jobs everyone has under the tent! I have stayed away from the stat sheets forever. I can do them but have never had that confidence. I called for hours to schedule volunteers, now its done by computer, not phone! Brian has taken over the volunteers for field marshaling now and is quite good at it! I always record the scores of the games, file the cards, first one at the tent before seven each morning and last to leave at night. Carried cases of water, collected cards from the referees, picked up trash…and more trash. Taken tents down. Cover score boards with plastic, handed out lunches to the referees, calmed down irate parents, found lost parents...not children, and helped all those with questions like...where can I buy the sand socks or a sand soccer t-shirt?! One year took a day off from teaching school to set up the fields with Deb Snyder who was my mentor mastering the sand soccer weekend routine. She passed away a couple years ago. The family members just have as many hats as I do. We all pitch in! HOW HAVE YOUR VIEWS OF NASSC EVOLVED THROUGH THE YEARS? Cyndy: Sand soccer has changed for the better each year it has taken place. The key to the success is the volunteers that make it possible. We’ve had terribly hot weather when you couldn’t play on the sand it was so HOT. Cold, winds, and horrible rains so bad that the games continued in the rain with players having difficulty seeing. Especially the goalies! Games that had to be delayed because of lighting and thunder. Flies biting, injuries, lost children, lost and found items, and sunburns. Always remember to wear a hat AND bring plenty of sunscreen. When the fields were down around first street we lost fields to the high tide coming in! Unreal! Glad when we moved the fields to the north.

56

CYNDY BR ADLEY WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO THE MOST EACH YEAR AT NASSC? Cyndy: I look forward each year seeing players, referees, and friends each year. You see and hear how families have grown. You may not remember them by name, but surely by face. Staying with sand soccer is the best feeling that you know all the profits come back to the complex for the next generations of players. Look how far the complex has been improved! It makes your time well worthwhile. So so many improvements there have been made. HOW LONG HAVE YOUR KIDS PLAYED AT NASSC? Cyndy: We now have the grand children playing. Caroline 15, Caitlin,14 and Carleigh 11, who are Brigitte and Brian’s girls. Emerson, age 10, their cousin is their biggest fans. She has recently moved to Richmond from Atlanta and hopes to be able to play herself soon. Patrick will be cheering his dad on while being watched by all under the family tent! We have raised nine grandchildren ages 15- 1 under our tent. Patrick was the youngest one to attend last year at three weeks old. think i have sent you a photo of him to you. Wagons for naps, even a set of twins along the way, digging in the sand, with holes everywhere and even training them to help unpack countless cases of water. Carleigh’s photo was once in the program sitting on top of the cases. WHERE DO YOU SEE/HOPE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE TOURNAMENT? Cyndy: I see the future of sand soccer becoming the best sand soccer in the USA! Maybe it already is. WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES AT NASSC? Cyndy: Memories are the best over the years. Here are a few…1 - One year I found a camera. After the weekend I brought it home, opened the card, saw photos of soccer scoreboard in Gloucester, VA. I called the athletic director of the school and found the owner, met them and returned the camera. 2 -Once I found keys to someone’s car. She sent me flowers to my school the next day. What a thoughtful surprise! 3 - credits cards found and canceled. 4 – In 2001 my husband had passed away unexpectedly eight weeks before and i was barely existing...my son’s team was in the finals on Sunday afternoon and my son took a kick to his face and broke his orbital bone above his eye. Spent the next several hours in the ER. Three trips to the doctors that week and graduation the following weekend. He graduated with a huge black eye. What a weekend to remember that year. TELL US A FUNNY STORY/SCENARIO THAT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED AT NASSC Cyndy: Once when one of the grands was about three, she decided to go potty in the porta potty. Mind you no one knew... she did on her own. Another adult came to the tent to say there was a little one in the potty yelling will someone come wipe me.... yep. Didn’t know anyone was watching her under the tent. Called parents and said do you know where your child is? ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? Cyndy: One good story happened last year. I so love this family. After 25 years of coming and playing sand soccer in the co -ed division the dad that is, was able to now have his son on his team. You see the son was always a player but came up through the youth divisions. The son is now in college. They won their division on which they were playing. The son had become old enough to play in the coed division. A faithful player coming all 25 years, and they had the first WIN!!!! Isn’t that great? Every year they would come and talk to me, under the tent. I watched before my eyes his son grow into the wonderful young college student he now is. I’d hear about his yearly accomplishments, dances at school, Prom, and doing well academically each year at school. You see he was born with only one complete arm, hand and the other hand had never developed completely. He played soccer like no other! My hero. You don’t need to mention the handicap, but a child that overcame his birth defect to be an outstanding young man. That is my proudest moment!!

: E E I T N T T I W E E R I V M M CO WHEN DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH NASSC? Kevin: Our family became involved with NASSC back in the fall of 2003. We had just moved back to Virginia Beach from Chesapeake. Our two oldest daughters were going to Landstown Middle School and playing soccer. I met Tim O’Brien who was one of the coaches. We were talking soccer one day and he asked if I would be interested in working with him doing facilities for NASSC. He showed me a lot about how things were done at the 2004 tournament. In 2005 I was fed to the wolves and learned a painful lesson. WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH NASSC AND WHY HAVE YOU STAYED? Kevin: Once I started with facilities, our daughters became very interested in playing and working with their dad. It took off from there. To this day, one or all of my daughters and Teresa are involved with facilities. This year, Teresa will be working with Gina on the registration process. We have stayed involved because we truly enjoy seeing an oceanfront turned into soccer fields for over 100K players and visitors. HOW HAVE YOUR VIEWS OF NASSC MORPHED THROUGH THE YEARS? Kevin: When I first saw the process in 2003/2004, I could not understand how we were getting over 100 goals, along with all the fields down on the sand. Assembling all the goals in one area and carrying them to their locations up and down the boardwalk amazed me, and not in a good way. The worst year of my life with the tournament was in 2005 when I was fed to the wolves by my predecessor. Assembling the goals in the manner it was done took from getting all the fields down on the sand. That year we did not finish getting fields down until midnight. The following year things changed. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO THE MOST EACH YEAR AT NASSC? Kevin: What I look forward to the most is seeing if we can match or beat our time for setup from the previous year. I keep in mind what we did the last time and try to improve on it. It’s also great to have the family together and do something that makes the lives of others better. HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOUR KIDS PLAYED AT NASSC? Kevin: We have had one or all of our daughters playing each year at NASSC since 2005.

60

KEVIN CALLAHAN WHAT ROLES HAS YOUR FAMILY TAKEN ON AT NASSC OVER THE YEARS? Kevin: Over the years it has been with facilities. Teresa was even working with us on the sand during take down and setup. Teresa and the girls have also worked at registration for many years. She still does. This year she is working with Gina trying to improve the registration process for all the teams. WHAT DO YOU SEE/HOPE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE TOURNAMENT? Kevin: That the tournament will continue to grow and keep the youth of soccer playing the game. NASSC: WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES AT NASSC? Kevin: Our favorite memories were when all four of our daughters were playing at one time. It was amazing to see the schedule Teresa created so we could get to eight games on Saturday, and four more on Sunday. And if their teams made it to a playoff, well then we moved around more. But it was the family time that made it great. Setup wise was the year when we were down on the sand and ready to go on Friday by 11:00 AM. That year was a great year. We strive to always be ready early Friday so teams can get on the sand and start practicing. NASSC: ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? Kevin: Many thanks to the staff and family of NASSC for making this tournament happen. But most of all, many thanks and love to my family for staying with me during this journey. For without them I could not have done this. I am blessed that Teresa and our four daughters are in my life!!

HISTORY OF BEACH SOCC ER The Brazilian people’s passion for football games has moved beyond the football pitch and onto the beach. Traditional moves were adapted to the sand, an environment where skill, improvisation, excellent physical conditioning and the swing and natural ability that Brazilians are known for in football, have all overflowed. The sun, the sea and the sand of the Copacabana beach have made up the scenery for the creation of the Beach Soccer, a sport full of plasticity, aerial plays, spectacular dribbles and goals…lots of goals. The formula has worked out. Beach Soccer has conquered the world quickly and is now played in 75 countries within the six FIFA Confederation zones. It is a sport for all audiences, played by men, women and children alike and now features coverage in over 170 countries worldwide, making Beach Soccer one of the fastest growing professional sports in the world and converting it into a major showcase for international commercial opportunity. The 2019 Beach Soccer World Cup will be played in Asuncion, Paraguay in November. Many of beach soccer’s top stars have been a part of the U. S. Open, the flagship professional division at NASSC. Our 2019 U. S. Open will feature a Men’s and a Women’s division, each battling it out for a cash purse.

travel and recreational soccer organizations to raise funds for the development of a new soccer complex and additional tournaments. The first sand soccer event in Virginia Beach occurred in May 1994 when 26 youth and adult teams braved a blustery nor’easter to do battle on six fields in the “Beach Soccer Kickout”. As Pro Beach Soccer expanded around the world, so did the North American Sand Soccer Championships. Our event now averages over 1,000 teams competing on 63 fields with players coming from all over the world. A typical NASSC weekend draws a population of 200,000 with an economic impact of 9-11 million dollars for the City of Virginia Beach. The event is now managed by the Hampton Roads Soccer Council, a 501(c)3 organization whose members include Beach FC, OTSL, SEVWSA, and Virginia Rush. The tournament revenues channel directly towards the continuing development of its Hampton Roads Soccer Complex, a premier 75-acre soccer complex which houses 2 turf fields with lights and 22 Bermuda grass fields. “The History of Beach Soccer”, https://www.beachsoccer.com/sport/history

During the early 90’s, Virginia Beach soccer clubs had begun searching for additional facilities to serve the rapidly increasing numbers of area soccer participants. In 1992, the “Hampton Roads Soccer Council (HRSC)” formed as a consortium of several Virginia Beach area

TEE INTERVIEW: T I M M CO COULD YOU EXPLAIN YOUR ROLES AT NASSC? John: Pro/Am Division Coordinator. Got to know and watch the best players in the world! Started as the Men’s Competition Coordinator. Henry joined shortly thereafter, and it evolved to the “Pro/Am Tent Coordinators”. Henry: Started as assistant men’s competition coordinator, recruiting teams and working the beach with women’s comp team. I now run pro tent & stadium with John, first line of communication with international competitors. We are the main information contact for all spectators in pro area, and by having all schedules posted on our boards we direct and advise hundreds of players and spectators daily from Thursday till Sunday. HOW LONG HAVE THE TWO OF YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH NASSC? John: Played in 2 nd year, volunteered 3 rd year, recruited Henry 4 th year. Together since – great marriage. Played for 16 years Henry: I came aboard in 1998, paying for our own motel rooms the first 5-7 years. WHY DID YOU ORIGINALLY GET INVOLVED WITH NASSC AND STAYING WITH IT FOR SO MANY YEARS? John: Love soccer; love the beach. I GET TO BE A TOURIST IN MY OWN TOWN ONCE A YEAR Henry: Great opportunity to get more involved in soccer locally after coaching youth teams for 20+ seasons here and playing in a men’s league for 15+ years. Stoked that I could help finance the soccer complex and see the fruits of our labor year in and out. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST AND LEAST ABOUT EACH OTHER WORKING AS A TEAM IN THE U.S. OPEN DIVISION? John: I have to carry his weight, but it’s hard to find volunteers. As a team we can cover the demands of running the main event. Lots of behind the scene stuff. Henry: Best part of doing this with John…his sense of humor, his friendly disposition to all people, been doing it so long it comes naturally to us now and have an answer to all questions, developed a good core crew of 6-10 volunteers that have been with us for 8-15 years. Least favorite part of John being my partner… very hard to locate him sometimes (most times), walks at a large, lazy turtle’s pace, always has a family obligation somewhere else at the beach or 3-4 states away during the weekend. HOW HAVE YOUR VIEWS EVOLVED THROUGH THE YEARS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TOURNAMENT, PARTICULARLY THE U.S. OPEN? John: Passion for the sport. Have gone to the last two soccer world cups; Portugal and Bahamas. Watched from parent taking kids to NASSC – the kids past thru their teens and still coming back. Parents even having a better “Reunion time” than kids. Henry: Been very pleased to watch the U.S. Open grow through the years, kudos to Dick Whalen for shouldering this monumental load yearly. Would like to have been able to partner with Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW) to blow this competition up to the next level of international competition similar to the Oceanside tournament this year, making them the big international draw in the U.S. this year.

64

JOHN C ARVALHO & HENRY HIGHTON NASSC: WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF THE U.S. OPEN? John: I would like the sport to grow Henry: Future of U.S. Open is wide open, BSWW loves that we have 10,000 players on the best beach in the country, we just need to ramp up the prize money and get large international sponsors to pay for teams from their countries to participate in the U.S. Open, boost international presence of the U.S. Open and entice teams to play here by bringing in best teams/players from Europe/Asia/Africa/S. America. NASSC: WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES AT NASSC? John: Best weekend of the year. Having Henry escort Miss Virginia to the center of the stadium and have her pick John Carvalho as the winning ticket for the Beach Soccer World cup in the Bahamas. Dick Whalen was almost lost for words. Worst memory: Turning my winning ticket back to Dick. Got to play with my older son for a few years and the greatest was playing with both my son’s and making it to the finals. The first year the Brazilians came up from Florida. Henry and I were sent to two loaned dealership vans to pick up the team from the airport. We heard the rumbling of a Congo drum and the emerged from the walkway juggling balls to their own Brazilian beat! Henry: Meeting and working with people from all over the globe, developing close relationships with many large sponsors, chaperoning my friend, Shannon MacMillan (USWNT), for a weekend, 15 years ago, spending time with international players and enjoying watching them interact with all of the young players, hosting room gatherings at my hotel through the years. *Best memory team wise were the OpSail teams that sang their own national anthems before their matches in the stadium, awe inspiring!* TELL US A FUNNY STORY/SCENARIO THAT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED AT NASSC. John: The nights with great “same time next year” friends. Henry: Packing up at end of weekend and finding six or so golf cart keys in my room left there by John C, not too many stories that can be shared with public. I had 20-30 people in/out dancing to reggae music until 1am or so. ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? John: Best times and truly great friends Henry: Been a pleasure working with all through the years, laying the groundwork to have the headquarters hotel become the Best Western, & learning to appreciate all the little things that are done quietly every year that make this thing such a gas to do.

NORTH AMERICAN SAND SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019 Code of Conduct

The Hampton Roads Soccer Council and the Tournament Committee of the North American Sand Soccer Championships (NASSC) care about the safety and conduct of all players, coaches, and parents/spectators during the event. We want to ensure that games are fair, positive and enjoyable experiences for all the participants involved. To achieve these goals, we have established a Code of Conduct for players, coaches, and parents/spectators. The following standards outline the conduct that is paramount to the game of beach soccer and to NASSC. Players, Coaches and Parent/Spectator Code of Conduct: • • • • •

All parties: may not make any disparaging or offensive comments or acts of physical abuse toward any player, coach, referee, or NASSC staff, during, or after a game. All parties: will not argue with or speak to a referee before, during, or after a game. Coaches: will display control, respect, and professionalism to all involved within the event. This includes opponents, coaches, referees, and NASSC staff. Coaches: are responsible for the conduct of their players and parents before, during, and after a game. Spectators: will remain in the spectator area during the games (on sideline or boardwalk – not on end line or team sideline).

Penalties and Enforcement: •

NASSC staff and referees reserve the right to request that a player, coach, or parent/spectator leave the field (sight and sound) if that individual fails to abide by this Code of Conduct. Additional action will be at the discretion of the NASSC Tournament Committee. Complaints regarding violations of this code shall be first brought to the attention of their respective Headquarters Tent who will then involve the Tournament Committee as required.

I (We) have read the Code of Conduct. I (We) agree to follow this Code of Conduct during participation in all NASSC activities.
