NAS fumin’ over termites in Fly Navy, Truman Chapel From NAS Key West Public Affairs

T

he tallest building in Key West is scheduled to go under wraps this week as the Naval Air Station’s “Fly Navy” building is tented for termites. Although the face of the building bears the “Fly Navy” name, the facility is officially known as Navy

Gateway Inns and Suites. NGIS quarters are also found on Truman Annex and Boca Chica Field. The rooms are used by Sailors on training detachments. When space is available, rooms are open to active and retired military vacationing in Key West. The Trumbo facility has 267 rooms. The building, erected in 1966, is just over 100 feet tall; the commu-

nication antennas atop the building push its height to 125 feet. By comparison, the La Concha Hotel in Key West is about 98 feet tall. “Like many buildings in this area, we have termites in some spaces that our spot treatments haven’t been able to control,” said Morale, Welfare and Recreation Director Tim Campbell. MWR oversees

NGIS and Navy Getaways, which includes vacation rentals on Trumbo and the RV park on Sigsbee. “The contract also includes the Truman Chapel on Truman Annex and building A-515 on Boca Chica Field,” Campbell said. The subcontractor, from Sarasota, Florida, has custom-made the tarps that will be used for tenting the Fly Navy and Truman Chapel,

said Adolph Santini, the Public Works facilities maintenance branch head. Once tenting is complete this weekend, fumigation will begin Monday, he said. The work is expected to be completed in about a week, depending on weather. The schedule is to have the building ready for people to enter by Dec. 8, according to Jeremy Thompson, deputy public works officer.
