The annual food collection campaign runs nationwide and involves the all levels of the federal government. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, hunger is a reality for one in six Americans. As a result, millions of Americans must turn to food banks and food pantries for emergency food assistance. Since the campaign began in 2009, federal workers have donated and collected 24.1 million pounds of food and other non-perishable items to support families across America. In 2014, NAS Key West civilians and military donated more than 2,300 pounds of canned and non-perishable food, which was given to local food pantries.
