As a library director, people often ask me, “Why you did you become a librarian?” They expect to hear it’s because I like to read.

That’s certainly true, but the longer answer is that I became a librarian to protect the public’s right to read and access information —that is, your right to read, access information, and explore all points of view (not just ideas that society considers popular).

American public libraries, including Nashville Public Library, are committed to intellectual freedom. We’ll celebrate that commitment again this year during Banned Books Week 2015, which happens Sept. 27 through Oct. 3.

At Your Library

Please join us for our Banned Books Week kickoff program, “Freedom Sings,” a live music performance at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Main Library, 615 Church St. This First Amendment Center musical revue celebrates songs that have been censored, challenged, or credited with sounding the call for change.

Censorship in America Since 1990, the American Library Association (ALA) has recorded more than 10,000 book challenges. A challenge is a formal complaint requesting to remove a book from library shelves or a school’s curriculum.

Nearly 75 percent of challenges are made to schools or school library materials. One in four is made to public library materials. What’s more, these are just the challenges we know about – it’s estimated that less than 25 percent of challenges are actually reported and recorded to ALA. Challenges are an attempt at censorship, and censorship denies our individual freedom to choose and think for ourselves.

However, thanks to librarians, teachers, parents, and students, most challenges are unsuccessful. So, books like I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, To Kill a Mockingbird, the Harry Potter series, John Green’s novels, and Phyllis Reynolds Naylor’s Alice series remain available—as do different versions of the Bible and Koran. While everyone in the community will probably find at least one title they personally find offensive, building a public library collection is not about shocking or offending people.

It is about supporting reading choice, inclusion, and diversity of thought.

Please help us celebrate Banned Books Week. Visit that uniquely American democratic institution—your public library—and check out a banned book. This book will not be hard to find. Just look for the title that often helps readers consider the world around them in a more informed, thoughtful way.

Jon Meacham • 2015 NPL Literary Award Honoree

Presidential historian, Contributing Editor at TIME, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham is executive vice president and executive editor at Random House.

His book, American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, was a New York Times bestseller. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 2009, the book was cited as an “unlikely portrait of a not always admirable democrat, but a pivotal president, written with an agile prose that brings the Jackson saga to life.”

His other New York Times bestsellers include Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship, exploring the relationship between the two great leaders who piloted the free world to victory in World War II, and American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation.

A member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the executive board of the Society of American Historians, Meacham is a regular guest on “Morning Joe” and also occasionally appears on “Meet the Press,” “Charlie Rose,” and other broadcasts. He is editor-at-large of WNET Public Media, New York’s public television station.

Virtuoso Showcase Classical Guitar Concerts

The 2015 Virtuoso Showcase Classical Guitar series brings world-class guitarists to Nashville to perform concerts at the Nashville Public Library. This program series, now in its thirteenth year, has a loyal following of classical guitar students and music lovers. The 2015 fall concert series opens on October 4 with a performance by Otto Tolonen. The series concludes on November 8 with José Antonio Escobar.

Otto Tolonen is one of the most successful Finnish classical guitarists. His repertoire spans from the renaissance vihuela and lute works to contemporary music. For the past few years he has extensively focused on solo and chamber music of the 20th and 21st centuries. He has won international acclaim for his performances of guitar works by Hans Werner Henze and is a sought-after interpreter of Henze’s music. In 2014 he will record Henze´s monumental Royal Winter Music for solo guitar.

José Antonio Escobar is one of the most distinguished and versatile classical guitar soloists of his generation worldwide, drawing attention through a perfect balance between his intense musical expression and his vast knowledge of the various musical styles and periods. He was born in Santiago de Chile, where he studied at the Conservatory of Music-University of Chile under Ernesto Quezada, graduating with Top Honors (Summa cum Laude). He later received his graduate degree (Meisterklassendiplom), after obtaining a scholarship from the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Chile to study under Franz Halasz, at the Hochschule für Musik in Augsburg, Germany, where he also worked as an assistant professor.

ADULTS Job & Housing Help from Metro Social Services Every Tuesday 9:00 a.m.

City-employed social workers host drop-in visits on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. until noon in the third-floor meeting area known as “The Commons.” Social workers will help Davidson County residents, 18 years and older, who are homeless or at imminent risk of losing their housing. They will not provide direct financial assistance to library patrons, but instead refer people to community organizations that can help them obtain or keep housing and employment.

Zombies in Pop Culture Saturday, Sep. 19 10:30 a.m.

The recent zombie invasion of pop culture has led many to wonder about the rise of the walking dead.

Local professor and author Chris Paris talks about the origins of zombies, looking to anthropology, religion, and folklore for answers. Paris graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Ph.D. in Religion.

He teaches courses in Bible, Comparative Religion, and Cultural Studies, and wrote the book Narrative Obtrusion in the Hebrew Bible. His research focuses on narrative criticism and pop culture.

Playing with Napkins Saturday, Oct. 17 2:00 p.m.

Playing with Napkins is a participatory program that will allow people to share in Brian Parker’s coffee shop napkin art. Parker will demonstrate making a butterfly, a rose and the Mona Lisa; participants are welcome to follow along or make something different. We will take photos of the completed works and then destroy all of the art. Parker will speak about temporary art, the importance of play and his art book, followed by a short Q&A. Coffee and pastries will be provided.

Sanford will teach a book arts workshop for adults; Andrea Steele will lead a kids’ activity.

Nashville Public Library and Metro Nashville Public Schools invite teens to get lost in a great story while celebrating Teen Read Week. Between October 18-24, middle and high school students have the opportunity to waive fines and fees by reading for two hours and turning in their reading log to their MNPS school or NPL location. Paricipants who read for 5 hours can be entered into drawings for 10 $25 and 10 $50 Visa gift cards.

The deadline to turn in a reading log is October 26.

The rules: 1. To participate, you must be 9-18 years old.
