2024 AnnualReport

2023–2024

DEAR MEMBERS OF THE NASHOBA BROOKS SCHOOL COMMUNITY,

The 2023-2024 year marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next as we celebrated all that we had accomplished through our 2014-2024 strategic directions Inspired Education: Innovation, Inclusivity, and Impact, and launched a new 10-year plan. We have much to be proud of in the last decade, and much to look forward to in the years ahead.

Embracing high-level strategic directions, to serve as a “compass” rather than a detailed “map,” has allowed Nashoba Brooks to successfully navigate turbulent times and the rapidly changing landscape surrounding independent schools. Over the last decade, Nashoba Brooks has marked many notable achievements driven by our strategic directions:

Innovation

• Launched multi-age preschool and transitional kindergarten programs.

• Engaged all employees in impactful professional development.

• Restructured the Student Support Team to provide 360° support for students.

• Introduced a flex enrollment model, bolstered by the construction of three new flex classrooms and space renovations that support our dynamic program.

Inclusivity

• Expanded transportation services.

• Launched a five-year, full-tuition STEAM Scholarship for students entering in Grade 4.

• Completed year-long proactive assessment with the Glasgow Group to support our efforts to build an inclusive community.

Impact

• Built and expanded a robust and unique comprehensive compensation package for employees.

• Implemented a bold and forward-focused reVision Tuition initiative that reduced tuition by approximately 5% each year for three years, making Nashoba Brooks more accessible to students and families who are a strong match for Nashoba Brooks.

• Expanded community programming on campus.

• Participated in the Global Action Research Collaborative (GARC) sponsored by the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools; and built effective partnership with parents in support of student learning, including providing access to occupational therapy and speech-language pathology services on campus.

• Grew enrollment by an average of approximately 15 students each year for the last three years.

The outcomes of our 10-year strategic directions exceeded all expectations.

While we worked diligently to prepare and launch our new set of strategic directions in the spring of 2024, we continued to advance our work toward near- and long-term goals. Employees engaged in intensive training focused on building inclusive communities and supporting the emotional health of students. We received two generous challenge gifts in support of the Nashoba Brooks Fund, helping to raise awareness for the School’s annual fundraising effort that enables us to provide outstanding learning experiences through financial assistance, field trips, professional development, and more, while also helping to ensure the strength of our exceptional program with a commitment to a competitive price point that is significantly below many of our peer schools.

In June of 2024, we also received a generous challenge gift specifically focused on The Campaign for Our Future to inspire support for the renovation of our Arts Platform, highlighting our outstanding visual and performing arts program through which so many students learn to express themselves creatively, collaborate with peers effectively, draw meaningful connections in their studies, and gain confidence to explore new learning opportunities in and beyond the classroom. We need to raise $600,000 more to release the matching gift, honor our commitment to the arts at Nashoba Brooks, and achieve our $10M goal for the Campaign.

We begin the 2024-2025 year with renewed energy and strong momentum. We start the year celebrating authentic leadership at every level in our new Stepping Up Ceremony, the addition of the new Transitional Kindergarten program, and the implementation of a new school-wide, social-emotional learning curriculum. We look forward to enjoying the new fitness studio and the community commons, which were added this summer, enhancing opportunities to promote healthy learning and connection. Excitement is high as we explore the many opportunities for Nashoba Brooks to Spark, Sustain, and Soar in the decade ahead.

Your continued partnership and philanthropic support make Nashoba Brooks a truly exceptional learning community and a transformational experience for children. As we report on the accomplishments of the past year and look toward the future, we express our heartfelt gratitude for this remarkable community. Thanks to you, Nashoba Brooks School can provide a space where students engage in learning that empowers them to connect with each other, find their voice, discover a lifelong love of learning, and become leaders who will shape our world in countless, powerful, and productive ways.

Sincerely,

DEAR MEMBERS OF THE NASHOBA BROOKS SCHOOL COMMUNITY,

While the economic environment remains unpredictable, Nashoba Brooks School’s commitment to building and maintaining a responsible, reliable, and sustainable financial model remains steadfast.

As a tuition driven independent school, Nashoba Brooks tuition remains by far our largest source of revenue, with tuition dollars accounting for 82% of gross revenue. Following three consecutive years of 5% average tuition reduction in alignment with reVision Tuition, our tuition price point is, by design, competitively positioned among our peer schools. Bolstered by this initiative, enrollment has grown steadily at a rate of approximately 15 students for each of the last three years, and high demand for our Preschool program has resulted in expansion of these early grade levels including the addition of transitional kindergarten in the fall of 2024, creating a robust pipeline for future enrollment and tuition revenue growth.

In addition to enrollment growth, external programs and philanthropic support remain essential components of the School’s financial model. In FY24, Nashoba Brooks has fostered new and existing partnerships to ensure that the School facilities are consistently fully utilized during and outside of school hours, raising more than $100K in revenue annually. By hosting local community events on campus, Nashoba Brooks has become recognized as a go-to location for professional development, community events, and special celebrations. Finally, philanthropic support has provided more than $800,000 in annual giving and more than $9M in cash and pledges has been committed to date to support capital projects through The Campaign for Our Future. We have less than $1M remaining to reach our goal and complete the renovation of our arts platform in 2025.

On the expense side of the equation, our greatest investments are in our people, with 70% of resources allocated to employee compensation and program support. We also commit 13% of the operating budget to financial assistance.

Despite some market volatility, Nashoba Brooks School’s $15.5M endowment continues to perform well, growing 12.9% since last year. The 5% draw from the endowment provides an important source of revenue from this enduring investment in the School’s future.

With a commitment to both near- and long-term fiscal strength, Nashoba Brooks continues to invest in value, manage expenses responsibly, and deliver on the promise of an outstanding educational experience for students. Thank you for your investment in all that we do. We could not do this without you!

Sincerely,

A BIG VISION FOR A LITTLE POND

“This is the foundation,” Fran Devitt says of a Nashoba Brooks School education. “Any kind of structure needs a strong foundation because if you just support the top, it will fall. That’s why I think it’s vital to keep this place strong and healthy.” Fran certainly knows a thing or two about not only the importance of building a foundation, having spent her professional years working in science and engineering, and how Nashoba Brooks can set the course for a child as she watched all three of her children, and now her eldest grandchild, pass through the hallways at 200 Strawberry Hill Road.

Identifying a strong structural foundation has also taken on a new form in Fran’s life as she and her husband, Les, work with the Nashoba Brooks team to expand our campus’s learning areas in several ways. As donors to The Campaign for Our Future, Fran and Les are excited to broaden our students’ artistic experiences through updating Tucker Auditorium and the art studios. They are also spearheading a new project to renovate an underutilized area on our campus that will expand our outdoor learning opportunities.

Fran and Les are reimagining the pond cabin on campus, currently used predominantly for storage, to be an outdoor learning center. Their vision, like our little pond, is both simple and impactful: “It will be a place to go and think and learn about yourself and the environment,” Les explains, describing it as a retreat that’s not so far away. This additional area will provide not only a new location, but also a new perspective for students. “Outdoor education is something that can break up the routine of the classroom,” Les points out, “the outdoors offers a place to envelope you so you can become more aware of things and more open to them.” Fran continues, “we’re all about creating experiences. We hope to create a hands-on experience that will stick with them. Also, it teaches kids that learning doesn’t just happen within a traditional classroom setting!”

Both Fran and Les hope that their contribution to The Campaign for Our Future and this new space will inspire learning and creativity among students of all ages on our campus. “We’re a secretly artistic family,” Fran laughs. “While people might view us as being focused on math and science, I am both a scientist and someone who is deeply creative.” Les excitedly adds that “the new building can be a place to paint and play music or take photographs! We want this space to be, essentially, whatever the students want it to be!” With this broad mindset, and focus on the arts from so many directions, we are sure there will be no shortage of inspiration for our students for years to come.

“We want this space to be, essentially, whatever the students want it to be!”
“They are happy to go to school in the morning and, to us, that’s priceless.”

EXPERIENCES THAT MATTER MOST

At Nashoba Brooks School, we know that sometimes it’s the small things that matter most. For David and Emily Singer, it’s the many moments their children have experienced at School that have made a lasting impact on the family and have encouraged their philanthropy in support of the School. Whether it has been turning preschool acquaintances into close family friends or watching their daughter’s excitement in tending to the beehives, their Nashoba Brooks journey has been marked by all of the moments that others might only give a passing glance. “We don’t donate for fancy buildings,” Emily and David both agree, “but we value the differentiated experience that allows each student to get what they need. We value the employees and the amazingly high quality that the School maintains in that regard. And we value the experiences that the School provides that expand each child’s learning.”

Joining our community in 2019 when their eldest entered Kindergarten, the Singers highlight the early grades as places where their children were challenged and nurtured. “Before our son joined Nashoba Brooks he was quite shy,” Emily remembers. “The School allowed him to become a leader in his class and it empowered him,” she continued. Moments where he participated on stage or recited a poem without fear during a Sharing of Understanding event are elements that the Singers credit with giving their son the confidence to now embrace leadership roles as he attends his new middle school. The family points to the Lower School and its focus on compassionate curiosity and listening to peers, balanced with the importance of advocating for yourself and learning who you are, as years where they were able to see big changes in both of their children. “It seems to literally be a community where everyone knows your name and that type of relationship helps the students build connections and confidence in these years,” David reflects.

Their daughter, now in Grade 3, is also looking forward to her next year as part of the girls-centered Middle School. “I think she is looking forward to an experience that maybe is similar to when she’s in her bunk at overnight camp,” Emily ventures. “I think she’s looking forward to the leadership and responsibility she sees her brother having.” Emily is no stranger to the all-girls environment having attended and graduated from a single-gender school herself. “I loved my all-girls education experience,” she volunteers. “I found that it allowed us to focus on all aspects of our education: academics, athletics, arts, and leadership.” This environment was also one where she and her classmates were able to form deep and lasting bonds despite their differences. “Playing and learning with girls from all different backgrounds, all different religions, from all different places deepened my educational experience in ways that I could not have imagined,” she notes.

Though their children are both still young, the Singers hope that they are able to continue building the skills to understand other people and the world in ways that the parents do not believe their generation was taught to do. This goal for their own children also extends to the type of world they hope the next generation is able to grow up in. David explains that through their philanthropy, “we are helping to build and nurture a community that has been able to build and nurture our children. We wish to help further the opportunities they have while they are here and have those around them benefit from these opportunities as well.” Emily concludes, “I think on a simple level, our kids are really happy here. They are happy to go to school in the morning and, to us, that’s priceless.”
