ince departing in May for a sixmonth deployment, the Golden Swordsmen of Patrol Squadron VP-47 have made community relation (COMREL) events a focused part of their service. These COMREL events highlight the squadron’s dedication to helping the host nation communities while advancing multi-national cooperation and understanding. Regularly deployed to Sicily, Djibouti and El Salvador, the squadron has also supported detachments to Spain, United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Greece. At each turn the Golden Swordsmen have taken time from their busy flight schedule and high operational tempo to interact

with local communities. “A lot of the time military members talk about what they do for their country, which is great, but I like to think about what we do for humanity as a whole,” said Yeoman 2nd Class Toni Gonzalez. The Golden Swordsmen have devoted countless man hours to the many COMREL projects they have undertaken such as painting a kindergarten’s playground in Bulgaria, lawn and garden maintenance and upkeep at the Instituto San Guiseppe Orphanage in Sicily, Habitat for Humanity projects in El Salvador, as well as feeding and caring for infants at an orphanage in Djibouti, just to highlight a few. “It gives an insight into local culture,

and I really enjoy helping with the kids," where we deploy. VP-47 Commanding Officer, Cdr. said Lt. Jamie Mills, who participated in the Djiboutian COMREL events. "It is Brian Erickson, reflected on the contriinteresting to see the difference in living butions of the Golden Swordsmen, “I am conditions, and it makes me very grateful so proud of these Sailors, they have really stepped up on this deployment, executing for my family and many other blessings.” The chance to help others has also important missions across the globe and served to strengthen the bonds between selflessly dedicating their off-duty time to Golden Swordsmen, who are busy work- help less fortunate members of the coming around the clock supporting a multi- munities from where we are flying. ON THE GO WITH MWR

The Godfather Tour with ITT

he first thing that comes to mind when you think of Sicily might be oranges, hand painted ceramics, prickly pears or the beautiful lava rock beaches. For many who’ve never visited the island, the mafia is likely to be a first thought - with all knowledge of Sicily coming from Francis Ford Coppola’s famous movie series, The Godfather. The Godfather trilogy, based on Mario Puzo’s book, is based on a fictional Sicilian-American crime family, originally from Corleone, Sicily. Several of the scenes take place in Sicily, however, when Coppola and Puzo scouted for filming locations for the original 1972 film, they discovered that Corleone was too modern to provide a backdrop for scenes taking place around 1950. So they chose the small towns of Forza d’Agrò and Savoca. ITT’s tour visits both cities. Forza d’Agrò, is the location where two churches were used in the films; the Cathedral of Forza

d’Agrò and The Church of the Holy Trinity. The first is featured in the first two Godfather films in the scenes where Michael walks through town and later when young Vito Andolini escapes from Corleone. The other church is used in the third film. Each is a typical Italian church façade, but very recognizable from the movies. The most fascinating part of the trip is the stop in Savoca. This pretty little town is nestled on a hill overlooking a landscape of rocky, rolling hills and the Ionian coast. The first familiar spot you see is Bar Vitelli, the bar used in the scene where Michael meets Apollonia’s father and arranges to meet her. This bar looks almost exactly as it does in the film. Outside, the table where Michael and his men sat is set up with toy guns and a flat cap for a cheesy and fun photo opportunity. The inside of the bar is plastered with photos from the film. They sell the usual café and granite, along with post cards, t-shirts and a few other small memorabilia. A small square sits across from Bar Vitelli with an unbelievable overlook and a silhouette of Francis Ford Coppola. From the square you can see a church at the top of the hill. This is the church of St. Lucia. It’s where Michael Corleone and Apollonia were married. It’s a small trek uphill but it’s worth the trip to kneel on the step where they did, and march down the hill with the movie’s theme music playing in your head. For a true The Godfather fan, this is a magical experience. ITT’s trip to Forza d’Agrò and Savoca is a once in a lifetime opportunity for any fan of the movie. The trip is coming up again on Saturday, Oct. 26. For more information, call ITT at 624-4777.
