The redesign of this existing building is an adaptive reuse effort that aims to offer a holistic approach to physical wellness in the fast-paced neighborhood of Midtown Manhattan. Maintaining the original facade on the east, a glass curtain wall is introduced on the west that allows sufficient daylight the enter the building. Removal of floor plates and emphasis on stairwells as key visual connectors weave the crowd through a diverse array of activites making the user experience a voyage.

EDGEMERE COMMONS
With the infusion of water at the core of its inception and design, this project aims to reclaim the unique qualities possessed by the site of Jamaica Bay. Engaging the nearby gardens, farms and schools, it serves as a succession plan for the transfer of knowledge brought to the area by migrant gardeners that would be lost in time. Made for intergenerational use, to facilitate education, the celebration of cultures that make up Edgemere’s diverse fabric.
With rising sea levels the design aims to mitigate flooding. The pods go against the instinct to block out the water. Instead, allowing water to run through thre site, redirecting it away from neighboring streets and homes. Meant to be impermanent, the modules’ materiality of wood and bioconcrete permits for con-habitance with marine life, ushering opportunity for residents and visitors to learn about the species that dwell in the living edge.
