PROGRAMMATIC STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Demonstrate introductory basic knowledge of the biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, linguistic, and cultural bases • of basic human communication and swallowing processes.

• Demonstrate introductory knowledge of the general principles of prevention, assessment, and intervention of speech, language, swallowing, and hearing disorders.

• Demonstrate introductory integrated basic knowledge of neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, linguistic, and cultural bases of basic human communication disorders and swallowing processes into written clinical observation reports and/or writing assignments.

• Demonstrate introductory ability to formulate and develop a reasoned positioned response based on research of the current literature on human communication development and disorders and/or swallowing.

• Demonstrate introductory level effective oral and/or written communication through oral/written presentation, projects, and/or papers, using appropriate terminology and concepts applicable to the discipline of SLP and audiology.

SPECIFIC COURSE OBJECTIVES (SCOS): Listed below are some of the primary objectives of the class. Students must demonstrate competence in the following: • • • • • • •

Demonstrate the ability to do broad phonemic transcription from text and dictation using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) Demonstrate knowledge of the phonological system of English at a level appropriate for an introductory course in phonetics Demonstrate an understanding of basic dialectal differences among speakers of English and be able to illustrate these differences in phonetic transcription Demonstrate an understanding of how English differs from other languages and be able to discuss these differences using appropriate terminology Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of articulatory phonetics as a discipline and its application to clinical practice Use terminology appropriate for an introductory course in phonetics Demonstrate an understanding of both segmental and suprasegmental features of American English

ASSIGNMENTS & GRADING: Exam 1 (20% of final grade) Our first examination covers the foundational concepts of phonetics, introducing you to the science of sounds. We'll explore the structure of the English phonology system, focusing on how syllables and sounds form the building blocks of speech. This exam will also cover an in-depth analysis of monophthongs, including both front and back vowels, as well as central vowels, providing a comprehensive understanding of these vowel sounds. Additionally, we'll examine the nuances of diphthongs and the specific nature of controlled /r/ diphthongs. To round off this section, we'll discuss various associated terms that are crucial for a thorough understanding of phonetic concepts.

Exam 2 (20% of final grade) The second examination transitions from vowels to the articulation of consonants and other critical elements of English phonetics. This includes an examination of stops-plosives, fricatives, affricates, nasals, liquids, and glides. Each category will be explored for its unique contribution to the phonetic landscape of English, supplemented with relevant associated terms to enrich your lexical and theoretical knowledge.

Final Exam (40% of final grade) Our comprehensive final exam encapsulates all topics covered throughout the course. It revisits the foundational principles of phonetics and the English phonology system, providing an overview that includes both monophthongs and diphthongs, emphasizing the controlled /r/ diphthongs. The exam then advances to a detailed evaluation of consonants, including stopsplosives, fricatives, affricates, nasals, liquids, and glides. This cumulative assessment ensures a holistic understanding and application of articulatory phonetics concepts, including all terms discussed during the course.

Classwork (20% of final grade) Classwork is an integral part of the course, designed to enhance your understanding of articulatory phonetics through practical application. Activities include completing worksheets, participating in discussions, and collaborating on group assignments.

These tasks are aimed at reinforcing the concepts discussed in lectures and giving you the opportunity to practice and apply the material in various contexts. It's important to note that attendance plays a crucial role in your ability to participate in these activities. Missing class will impact your classwork grade, as it will limit your opportunities to engage with the course content and contribute to group assignments. Therefore, consistent attendance is strongly encouraged to ensure you get the most out of these learning experiences and maintain a strong classwork grade.
