Gardeners should test their soil every two years. It is important for novice gardeners who are not familiar with growing plants. With the help of the soil test, you can know the nutrient level and find out which nutrient you should add to your soil.

For this purpose, collect a sample of your soil which is moist but not waits. Dig around 6 inches and take a handful. Do it from several places in your garden. Now keep it in a container. Take some soil out for sample.

Soil is tested in mid-winter to get it ready for spring plantation. Use 2 to 3 pounds of fertilizer

such as 10-20-10 for a 100 square feet of garden area. Use 2 pounds of fertilizer if you have a sandy garden and 3 pounds if the soil is clay. Avoid using a lot of fertilizer as it may kill plants.

2 cups of fertilizer weigh around 1 pound. If your fertilizer has a higher quantity of nitrogen, use it less. Two pounds of 5-10-5 fertilizer is the same as 1 pound of 10-20-10. You can also use organic fertilizer and spread it on your garden. Use around 30 pounds of manure on 100 Sq.ft. of the garden.

Do not go for fresh manure as it may injure the plants.

How to apply fertilizer?

Fertilizers can be applied in 4 different ways.

Broadcast before planting: The right amount of fertilizer is evenly scattered on the garden and mixed with the soil to a depth of 4-inches before making the rows. The method doesn’t cause much of plant damage and is recommended for home gardeners.

Row application: The fertilizer is scattered in the strip on the side of every row before doing the plantation. However, when you use this method, make sure you avoid the roots from getting in

touch with the fertilizer band or it may kill the plants.

Starter solution: It is used for transplants like eggplant, cabbage or tomato. Mix 2tsp of fertilizer in a gallon of water and mix. Now pour one cup in the hole and allow it to soak before transplantation.

Application to growing plants: This is good for sandy soil or for places where heavy rain has occurred as it may leach the nutrients from the soil.

Sprinkle the fertilizer on the side of the row and water the soil. Use ½ cup of fertilizer for a row of 10ft.

Side-dressing enhances the yield of your crops.

Fertilize your fall garden in the same way as you would do to your spring garden. If your fall garden has a fertilized spring garden, you will just require ½ the spring fertilizer rate during plantation. Use 1 or 2 pounds for every 100sq.ft.
