It’s time to train for pedagogically sound online courses. If you have not been formally cleared to teach online and will be teaching a summer course, contact the DE Coordinator asap. Watch for additional May trainings and read about Best Practices for Online Education as well as view previous Best Practices in Canvas Workshop archives.

Distance Education Versus Correspondence Courses The CCC Chancellor’s webinar made specific reference to the difference between conducting Distance Education courses versus Correspondence courses. Most importantly, DE regulations stipulate regular “progression and learning” as well as instructor/student contact controlled by instructors. Correspondence courses differ in that the students control the pace and contact is not expected. “On March 17, 2019, title 5 changes to section 55204 eliminated “correspondence” as method of distance education instruction to align with the federal definition of distance education.” Be sure your online courses follow D.E. regulations Title 5 changes can be found here.

Join the first-ever Board of Governors Virtual Advocacy Day. …to “step up” and help less experienced instructors moving to all online teaching. As the Chancellor also pointed out, the Covid19 event has opened up inequities in community college education. The Chancellor’s Office and the Center for Urban Education will provide a six-part webinar series that will provide strategies for faculty and administrators to exercise agency on behalf of the most vulnerable students. The first webinar is: The Importance of Equity-Minded Virtual Practices during COVID-19 and is scheduled for Thursday, April 23 from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m.

You may have noticed some changes to the Canvas environment, which is continually seeking to better serve the teaching and learning process. To keep abreast of all changes and notes as they happen, bookmark the page here.

Here are some changes of note: As previously noted, (see the Canvas and Accessibility Powerpoint and Zoom session in the NVC Online Learning Forum) the Canvas editor will be changing in July of 2020. If you’d like to start using it now, go to your Settings → Feature Options → RCE Enhancements and toggle the button on. The new editor will also autosave any content that hasn’t been edited up to one hour!

New Quizzes Partial Scoring: Multiple Answer questions allow instructors to award students partial credit with penalty if a student selects an incorrect response. This grading option will be the default for new Multiple Answer questions with an option to use Exact Match instead.

QR Code now available for mobile use for both Instructors and Students. Go to your account (the circle on the top left in the global navigation menu) and select “QR Code for Mobile Login
