Donna Doelman became a Justice of the Peace out of necessity but 20 years later, she does it for her passion for justice. Doelman has been a Justice of the Peace in Napanee for 11 years, after nine years in London, Ont., following an application when her husband became ill. “I had given up my career to raise our children but when you have a sick farmer and four kids, the oldest was in Grade 9, there was no way I could even begin farming so I responded to an ad in the paper and I was a successful candidate,” explained Doelman. “It was out of necessity. Doelman believes in being “firm,” while also showing “compassion” to all individuals who walk into her courtroom. “Everyone I meet is

Justice of the Peace Donna Doelman says she embarked on a career in the courts “out of necessity” when her husband became sick; since then, however, she has embraced the role with gusto.

under stress. Everyone I meet is in crisis. Every time someone leaves to courtroom, half of the courtroom is happy and half of the courtroom is not,” she explained, stating it’s been important for her to find balance in her life and to form close relationships with those who support her. “You could not believe some of the pictures I’ve seen. It is hard but that’s when a supportive family, friends, neighbours come in,” said Doelman. But she says when she does make a difference in someone’s life, it overcomes all the negativity she sees. “This morning there was a gentleman (who) thanked me for being so kind in explaining things. That is important to me, that I show compassion and that I take time for everyone,” she said after a day of court last week. “When I feel that I’ve made a positive difference in a person’s life or in the life of their family.”
