Deseronto factors in ‘best fishing town’ contest By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER ESERONTO didn’t reel in the title of the World Fishing Network’s Ultimate Fishing Town but it didn’t come away empty-handed either, netting a cheque for $2,000. Deseronto was named an affiliate winner after amassing 5,785 votes to place eighth in the country. They were one of five communities to be named an affiliate winner and their prize was sponsored by Bell. “This is really to all the
D
residents and people who voted,” said Dana Valentyne, Deseronto’s Community Development Officer. “This is your win, I thank you and congratulate you. It’s going to be the start of hopefully something great when it comes to waterfront improvements. We’re looking at upgrading our municipal dock and boat launch.” Valentyne says town council is going to review its funds to see how much they can contribute to the waterfront upgrades as well. She says the winnings mean they can have an upgraded dock in the Bay of Quinte’s waters by

September. “That’s one of Deseronto’s biggest assets, our location and the potential we have on the waterfront whether it’s recreational boating or fishing,” said Valentyne. “Not just waterbased fishing, but a lot of shore-based fishing and then in the winter as well. Fishing is a year-round recreation in Deseronto.” Taking home the Ultimate Fishing Town title was Hastings Ont. with a whopping 89,003 votes to earn the $25,000 grand prize. Along with the prize money, which must be spent on a fishing related project, they’ll also be fea-
tured on a WFN telecast. Even as it became clear Hastings was going to win, the fact that people continued to support Deseronto allowed them to finish in the top eight and earn some cash. Valentyne feels Deseronto could approach Hastings’ numbers next year with a little more campaigning. Valentyne says the town didn’t hear
about the competition until just a few days before the three-week-long online voting window opened. Valentyne was about to enter the town when she noticed resident Luis Amaral already had. After that the town began spreading the word, even posting a sign next to their official welcome sign to encouraging people to log on and vote. “I’d really love for us to
make a bid for next year and possibly take it all the way to number one,” said Valentyne. “This is proof that we definitely have the support out there.” Rounding out the top three were Port Colborne, Ont. and Temagami, Ont., garnering $5,000 and $2,500 respectively. As for Napanee, they placed 18th with 1,233 votes.

Members of the Greater Napanee Fire Services were at Tim Horton's last Wednesday, pitching in to help sell coffee with proceeds going towards Camp Day. Tim Horton's Wendy Foskett (left) and firefighter Tyler Ryan worked the drive-thru at Napanee's Centre Street location. This year's Camp Day raised a record $11 million across Canada.
