HEAVY

CLAY CENTER

F

or Project II, we were asked to design a clay center with heavy tectonics.

I gathered inspiration from brutalist architecture because of its ability to focus attention on one thing through minimalism. This building attempts to focus or direct attention in different ways as one moves throughout the space. In the gallery, attention is focused on the artwork, and in the studio spaces, attention is focused on creating.

Concrete is used as the main building material, and the shape of the structure mimics the site outline. This simplicity creates an intention that focus should be directed towards the artwork inside.

The space between the structures acts as a partition to emphasize the distinction between the two main programs of the clay center; viewing and creating.

or project IV, we were asked to redesign project II with the same program concept in mind, but instead employ light tectonics. Altering the roof lines creates a feeling of lifting from the ground. Thin steel joists form the twisting roof on which large glass panels sit to let in light.

Throughout the day, shadows cast onto the walls from the joists rotate with the ceiling.

When incorporating the concept from Project IV, I focused on the connection between the two structures as the inspiration for iteration. This time utilizing a hexagonal plan, the space between the structures is crucial to forming the entire shape.

or program studio, we worked on six assignments that strengthened each other throughout the semester. We started with research, understanding the purpose of “memory, care, and labor” in architecture.

I was assigned the term “care” and learned from readings such as Critical Care by Elke Krasny and Angelika Fritz, and “Caring Architecture” by Joan Tronto. A quote by Tronto that inspired me from the beginning reads, “caring can be viewed as a species activity that includes everything we do.” With this research, we were then asked to create a design on a portion of Lake Street Minneapolis that assisted in revitalization.

My partner, Lauren Sturlaugson, and I, chose to focus on the revitalization of Midtown Global Market on Lake Street. We created an elevated platform above the parking lot outside of Midtown Global Market. In doing so, we allowed for parking to remain and capitalized on unused vertical space for an outdoor gathering area.

Our final thesis: “by implementing gatherings spaces for the community, green infrastructure, and collaboration spaces, this design supplements the businesses within Midtown Global Market and creates a connection with Lake Street.”

or this project we were asked to analyze a site near the Saint Anthony Falls Historic District. The program of the design was given as a landscape interpretation center. With this program, we then designed a building that attempted to respond to the site in a specific way.

The thesis for this design was, “people become a part of the site through first the viewing of, and then the interaction with water on the site.”

When focusing on site as inspiration for the building, I chose to understand sun cycles, the movement of water throughout the site, and the topography of the land.

Some of this sketching displays the conception of these ideas.

This building slowly steps down in unison with the lanscape.

The roof lines protrude out at different angles creating organic, loosely defined boundaries. The circulation throughout follows one main path, and eventually leads to the interaction space at the bottom. A path dug into the river allows people to become a part of the site through the interaction with water.

The materials used for this building include wood siding, metal roofing, concrete floors, and glass. These materials reflect the elements of the site.
