KEY FACTS •

The song was composed by Charles Dumont with lyrics by Michel Vaucaire.

It was recorded and made famous by the most famous changeuse of the 20th century, Edith Piaf.

Edith Piaf’s mother abandoned her at birth and she was brought up by sex workers in a Paris brothel.

‘Piaf’ is not Edith’s read name. It translates as ‘The Sparrow’ and she was given that name as she was tiny and thin, just like a sparrow.

She began singing on the streets of Paris and shot to fame when she was discovered by a Paris nightclub owner

Edith Piaf struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for most of her life and suffered from poor mental health.

Her voice was and is instantly recognisable and she was famous and sang throughout the world.

She died aged 47 in 1963.
