KEY FACTS •

‘Take Five’ is, of course, not a song as it has no lyrics.

‘It takes its title from the fact that throughout the piece, there are five beats in each bar.

It was composed by the Saxophonist Paul Desmond, who plays the solo on this recording.

When performed, Take Five always features a drum solo. On this recording, the drummer – Joe Morello – plays the drum with his hands and not his sticks.

‘Take Five’ is the biggest selling jazz single ever.

‘Take Five’ also means to pause what you are doing and have a break, as does the phrase, Take some time out. ‘Time Out’ is the name of the album on which ‘Take Five’ is featured. Every piece on the album has an unusual time signature.
