The mission of the Artists Association of Nantucket is to foster the visual arts on Nantucket. We create a vibrant arts community by promoting, supporting and encouraging the work of Nantucket artists, providing educational programs in the arts, and preserving the legacy of Nantucket artists.
Good evening and welcome to the Artists Association of Nantucket’s Gala and Art Auction. We are thrilled to co-chair this enchanting and festive event. We ask you all to Dive In with us and celebrate an evening of art and artists.
This year our Honoree Artist is Anne Marie Bratton, an acclaimed artist and dedicated patron of AAN for almost 20 years. Jeremiah and I have had the great pleasure of being dazzled and delighted by her artwork in our own home.
Thank you to our talented community of Artist Members for their contributions to tonight’s auction. AAN fosters the visual arts by promoting almost 300 Artist Members, preserving a historic collection of Nantucket art, and providing year round programming for all ages. We are so grateful for all that AAN does to enrich life on our beloved island.
We are deeply grateful to our Gala committee for all of their imaginative thinking and dogged pursuit: Elizabeth Bauer, Kim Bepler, Ellen Caplan, Laurie Champion, Jane Deery, Helen Dwyer, Annette Ford, Miriam Mandell, Kit Manigan, Margaret Anne Nolen, Elizabeth A. Reilly, Pete Steingraber, and John Sylvia. It has been a true pleasure working with Tracey Sears and Olivia Wells to make this evening possible.
So now, let’s all Dive In!
Cheers,
Connie Anne and Jeremiah Harris 2024 Gala Co-Chairs
Joined by friends new and old, with the backdrop of Nantucket Harbor and surrounded by beautiful art, the Gala is the highlight of our season. Funds raised from this festive event allow AAN to welcome hundreds of students to the Visual Arts Center, actively promote local Artist Members, and preserve a remarkable collection of historic art.
This night would not be possible without the dedication and support of our chairs, Connie Anne and Jeremiah Harris. We are so grateful for their tireless work to ensure the success of this special evening. Thank you also to our Gala committee whose thoughtful donations and creative ideas have helped the Gala come to fruition.
The Gala’s main event is the live auction, led by art dealer and appraiser Ron Cavalier. Ron and his business partner Lindsay Ebanks are the coowners of the Cavalier-Ebanks Galleries with locations in Nantucket, New York City, Greenwich, and Palm Beach. Thank you, Ron, for your participation in tonight’s auction.
AAN has a community of close to 300 local Artist Members. Our members come from diverse professional backgrounds and are joined together by their love of Nantucket and their talent for art-making. Artist Members have donated their work to be sold in the Gala auction. All proceeds from tonight’s auction are donated to AAN. We are so grateful to our Artist Members for their generosity and participation in this year’s Gala.
Tonight we are honoring Artist Member Anne Marie Bratton and her painting Seascape in a Porthole. Anne Marie is a photo-real artist who works in oil, graphite, and watercolor. Her involvement with AAN spans almost 20 years, serving as Gala chair, Salon Series committee member, Board Member, and more. Thank you, Anne Marie, for your dedication to AAN. We are thrilled to honor you and your work tonight.
As we approach the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Artists Association of Nantucket, we are constantly reminded that AAN would not be here without the generosity of our donors. Thank you for “diving in” to an evening celebrating our artists and our island.
With gratitude,
Patty Keneally Board President

July 2024 issue
The 19th-century Plein Air tradition of painting has particularly influenced Nantucket’s art scene—however, not all of the island’s notable artists fit the impressionist mold. Anne Marie Bratton, who divides her time between Nantucket and Fort Worth, Texas, is an example of this as her technique focuses on photorealism. She was named Artist Honoree for the 2024 Artists Association of Nantucket Gala, which takes place July 13 at the Great Harbor Yacht Club. “Her process is hyperrealism, and specifically she is very good at reflective surfaces," explains impressionist painter Robert "Bobby" Frazier, AAN Artistic Director and the 2020 Gala Honoree Artist.
Bratton’s oil painting, Seascape in a Porthole, will be honored as the final piece in the event’s live auction—there's a total of 25 works from other local artist members. The proceeds from the evening help the AAN continue to support almost 300 artist members, host year-round art programming and preserve a collection of historic art.
Bratton is thrilled to be this year's honoree. "I tell everyone this is the Academy Awards of art. There's no question. This is the highest honor you can possibly get. And what's even more of an honor is when you look at the people who have been chosen in the past,” she says. “Those are the luminaries of the art world. … Those are the best artists on the island. They're incredible, and the fact that my name is with them—well, I couldn't ask for more." Past award recipients include John Carruthers, Julija Mostykanova, Lynn Nicholas, Carol Keefe and more.
Often seen around town and on the beach capturing images on her iPhone to create collages for her paintings, Bratton explains that the
biggest compliment she can ever get is when someone says that her work looks like a photograph. “Or sometimes, [the galleries] put my paintings in the photography section, and that's a huge compliment because that is effectively what I was trying to achieve,” she adds.
Raised in New York City by her single father, the legendary Pete Rozelle (former commissioner of the NFL) Bratton spent much of her childhood reading books, sketching pictures and watching television. Bratton holds the distinction of going to every Super Bowl ever held. When she wasn't heading off to the Hamptons with her father and his pro football colleagues, she was developing her artistic skills. Her formal training began in highschool at Rollins College and continued under the guidance of renowned art teacher Helen Silvestry in Fort Worth, focusing on photoreal drawing. She also studied at the Texas Academy of Figurative Arts, and continues to hone her craft with Laert Aleksi at Sabka Studio.
Looking back, Bratton has grown considerably since first showing the AAN her portfolio for membership in 2013. Despite having drawn and painted for years, she always gave her works away for free. During her application process, the AAN leadership challenged her to determine the value of her
art. Bratton entered every possible silent auction to figure out the value of her art. She gathered pricing data, especially noting purchases made by non-friends and family, to determine her art's worth. Since then, she has charged for her work, marking the beginning of her professional career as a true professional artist. In 2014, Bratton was inducted as an artist member at the AAN.
Bratton's impressive portfolio includes numerous highprofile commissions. She has created works for the Kimbell Art Museum, The Amon Carter Museum, The Van Cliburn Competition (where she was the featured artist at Bass Hall), the Fort Worth Zoo, the Fort Worth Dallas Ballet, Artists Against AIDS, the Fort Worth Country Day School and The Fort Worth Garden Club, where her oil painting "White French Tulips" graced that year’s invitations, notecards and programs. In addition to these prestigious projects, she has completed numerous commissions for private homes and patrons, solidifying her reputation as a master of photorealism.
Bratton’s commitment to her craft and her ability to capture the intricate details of her subjects have set her apart in the art world. Her works are not just admired for their technical prowess but also for the emotional depth they convey. As she continues to push the boundaries of photorealism, Bratton remains an inspiring figure in the Nantucket art scene, demonstrating that dedication, skill, and a willingness to value one’s own work are key to artistic success. Her journey from a young artist giving away her work to a celebrated professional with high-profile commissions exemplifies the transformative power of recognizing and embracing one's worth.
Please join us in welcoming Ron Cavalier as this year’s auctioneer! Ron is an art dealer, appraiser, and co-owner of the Cavalier-Ebanks Galleries with locations in Nantucket, New York City, Greenwich, and Palm Beach. We are so pleased to have Ron here with us tonight!

Julie Akerson Chicos is a Boston-Nantucket-based mixed-media abstract artist. Her compositions offer an escape into the underwater world through the lens of abstract art, serving as a tribute to her deep-seated love for the sea.
The paintings reflect the seductive allure of the ocean, or water itself. Each unique layer draws the viewer in, reminding us of the sound of waves lapping the shore or a river weaving and
winding its way over the rocks, resonating with the depths of our souls and evoking a longing for more. The artist's aim is to capture that connection and spark recollection in the viewer.
In each piece, vibrant underwater worlds come alive, inviting tactile exploration with contrasting colors and soothing composition. Each creation is a unique amalgamation of semi-precious gems, healing stones, energy crystals, and shells from the heart of the sea, meticulously hand-placed in a bed of liquid resin and earthy pigments.
At the deepest level, the creative process and the healing process share a connection like no other. Art is healing, serving as a form of restoration that repairs the soul and, much like each piece, transforms something fragmented into wholeness once again.

THERE IS ANOTHER WAY TO FLY.
It is flying that is an extension of what you value not an interruption of it. Less harrowing than flying commercial. More intimate than flying private. IT’S FLYING PERSONAL. And once you’ve done it, you’ll never want to fly any other way.
