Dear Artists, Patrons, Students, and Arts Community,
I am pleased to present the 2023 Annual Report which is dedicated to Patty Keneally in honor of her 10 years of service on the Board of Directors, including three as Board President. Patty has participated in every aspect of the organization and has been a steady and guiding hand during considerable change. We are incredibly grateful for her leadership, insight, and commitment. We welcome Laurie Champion as incoming Board President. Laurie has demonstrated years of devotion to our artist community and its island art, most recently serving as the Chair of Special Events on the Development Committee.
As you will see in the following pages, 2023 was a year of growth for the Artists Association of Nantucket. Throughout major transitions, our community of members has stood steadfast in support, continuing to spread creativity island-wide. Our mission guides us to foster the visual arts on island by exhibiting work by over 300 Artist Members in two downtown galleries year round, teaching arts programming for all ages, and growing and preserving a Permanent Collection of almost 1,700 historic and significant artworks.
In 2023, we hosted 3 Sidewalk Art Shows, 30 gallery exhibitions, gave away almost $77,000 in educational scholarships, and acquired 14 pieces for the Permanent Collection. At the same time, we collaborated with island organizations such as the Maria Mitchell Association, Nantucket Historical Association, and Egan Maritime Institute, curated four special intimate art experiences for the Salon Series, and hosted a juried show at the Big Gallery, two live auctions, and three silent auctions.
Our work would not be possible without our event chairs, special event committee members, volunteers, business sponsors, art buyers, class takers, staff members, and of course, our artists. Thank you for your support. Your creativity will sustain us for years to come.
With gratitude,
Tracey Sears Executive Director
From Spring Sweep to Wet Paint, AAN stayed busy hosting various opportunities for art on island. We remain grateful to our artists and patrons, without whom we could not host such lively events.
Acherished rite of spring, the annual Spring Sweep silent auction was initiated about twenty two years ago to support artists and AAN after the quiet winter months. Spring Sweep weekend has proven to be a solid event that has grown into a resilient third leg of AAN’s major fundraising efforts.
This year, Spring Sweep was once again back to its exciting in-person format, under the leadership of Event Chairs Leslie Bresette and Barbara Clarke. With an opening reception held at the Big Gallery on April 6, and the silent auction on April 8, the weekend was a great success in all ways, and joyfully heralded the coming spring for all who attended, with healthy bidding on beautiful, original Nantucket artwork.
The Nantucket Golf Club provided lovely appetizers and AAN’s creative staff put together the ever-popular Peepers Punch. The new season was heartily welcomed, and AAN was off to an amazing year ahead.
As with last year, the Big Gallery acted as headquarters for our 12th annual Plein Air Nantucket outdoor painting festival, taking place in mid-June. The 2023 Paint Out was held within the surrounds of Folger’s Marsh, with permissions to use the properties of the Egan Maritime Institute’s Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum and the University of Massachusetts Field Station. A two-hour Quick Paint event was also held with permissions to paint at Children’s Beach and at the harbor overlook in The Creeks Preserve park of The Nantucket Land Bank.
Forty-one artists participated and exhibited over ninety artworks created in several media on the festival “Wet Walls.” Our annual Frank Swift Chase Awards, for excellence in outdoor painting, were awarded at the festival end, with Illya Kagan as juror. The ceremony was well attended.
The award recipients this year were: 1st Place: “Waves Break Beyond” Meghan Weeks; 2nd Place: “Shoreline” Robert Frazier; 3rd Place: “Path to 40th Pole” Rose Burdon. Honorable mentions were: “Children's Beach” by Lyn Coffee; “Overlook to Town” Elle Foley; “Foggy Morning” Julija Mostykanova; “Morning at the Creeks” Lisa Matheson; and “Fog on the Corners” Meghan Weeks.
AAN was thrilled that Big Gallery at 12 Straight Wharf could host the exhibition. This popular event will return to the island next year!
One of the oldest traditions at AAN and in the United States, for that matter, is the annual Sidewalk Art Show. Dating back to 1930, AAN hosts two, sometimes three shows a summer. They are a beloved outdoor affair that draw many art enthusiasts to the charming gardens at the Atheneum year after year. During the pandemic, AAN hosted a few shows on the lawn of its Visual Arts Center (VAC) at 24 Amelia Drive for the first time ever, and that tradition has carried on.
This year the shows took place on Saturday, July 1, and August 5 at the Atheneum garden and then again on Sunday, September 3 at the VAC front lawn. Over 20 artist members gathered to greet, meet, and sell original Nantucket artwork in the welcoming outdoor settings. It is an exciting day and provides the artists, visitors, and buyers, alike, time to get to know each other. Visitors leisurely mingle around the gardens and lawns taking in the beauty of a summer day, and of course, the talented artists’ works.
This is an AAN tradition that will certainly endure for at least another 93 years!
2023 was the third year of the Salon Series, a membership featuring four exclusive summer events centered around learning more about Nantucket arts and culture.
2023 Salon Series members enjoyed an afternoon of painting and socializing at the Visual Arts Center; heard about building a moderate art collection with Margot Rosenberg, a Deputy Chairman at Christie’s; met AAN Artist-in-Residence Katie Trinkle Legge for a demonstration and discussion; and viewed the extraordinary Billings Collection of museumquality artwork.
Wet Paint Weekend (October 6-8), which is one of AAN’s signature events and a fall season favorite, provides our beloved patrons, talented artists, and the community, alike, with a vibrant end of season focal point. Always a festive affair, in 2023 we honored iconic printmaker Eric Holch, longtime Nantucketer and AAN artist member. Holch’s beautiful, graphic prints are a mainstay of the island summer art world.
The event was deftly chaired by Maryann Jones who created a memorable and successful evening while Scott Capizzo energetically took on the auction before a crowd whose enthusiasm only grew as the evening went on. All told, forty pieces of beautiful art were auctioned off at the Nantucket Yacht Club, with a silent auction buzzing in the large foyer. After the live auction, dinner guests gathered in the beautifully decorated dining room and were treated to a select number of artist-decorated end tables that were also up for auction.
We are grateful to our generous sponsors that include Workshop/APD, Donelan Family Wine, Hingham Institution for Savings, and Permits Plus LLC. A big thank you, also, to our loyal island community for participating in the festivities.
Always the most anticipated event of the summer, the sparkling Gala auction and dinner was held on Saturday, July 15 on the beautiful lawn at the Great Harbor Yacht Club overlooking glistening water. This exciting annual evening of celebration of Nantucket art draws many devoted art supporters and serves as AAN’s most important fundraiser. This year the playful theme was carried into the colorful beach balls hanging from the ceiling of the tent.
John Carruthers was chosen as the honoree artist and his charming, vibrant woodcuts filled the evening with excitement. John was duly feted with a tribute at the beginning of auction by Liz Hunt O’Brien, his colleague, and Maura Wendelken, his former student and fellow artist. Both honored him with stories of their meeting him and of his history at AAN. John also took the stage, and in full Carruthers charisma and humor, thanked everyone in attendance and AAN for the support and encouragement over the past 19 years.
Guests and artists enjoyed the cocktail hour with a demonstration of John’s woodcutting techniques. Three hundred guests enjoyed dinner as twentyeight pieces of art were auctioned off while a silent and online auction took place simultaneously. John’s work was the final piece in the live auction and greeted with much applause.
A tremendous thank you goes out to Kit and Mark Manigan, the 2023 Gala co-chairs for an amazing and colorful evening! Congratulations to AAN’s development team and volunteers whose dedication and hard work always make the Gala a thrilling and memorable evening!
Big Gallery kicked off our second year in the Thomas Macy Warehouse with Spring Sweep 2023. The event was ably chaired by Leslie Bresette and Barbara Clarke, and it featured steady attendance and much fanfare.
In June, Big Gallery acted as headquarters and the exhibition space for the 12th rendition of Plein Air Nantucket, with an awards ceremony at the close of the painting festival.
In July, the gallery hosted a juried art exhibition. “Nantucket Envisioned” featured a selection and curation of submissions from AAN members chosen by guest jurors Jackie Reeves of Barnstable, MA, and T. Allen Dawson of Sheridan, Wyoming. The opening reception was a lively affair. Reeves and Dawson also presented a revelatory talk and visual presentation of their individual works and processes, hosted by Bob Miklos.
In August, the Salon Series presented a talk and painting demonstration by Katie Trinkle Legge, a past president of the association who also volunteered for nine years as vice president as we transitioned into this new millennium.
With artist member Heather V McLeod as our main gallerist, aided by Elspeth Thornewill, Robert Frazier and volunteer Pete Steingraber, Big Gallery continued our long standing traditions under the roof of a perfectly preserved brick warehouse built immediately after the Great Fire of 1846.
This year’s major project was a move of the entire collection into the PC room with temperature control and dry sprinkler suppression at the Visual Arts Center. Three large archival art storage shelving units were also purchased to house important works in the collection.
Notable new acquisitions include “House by the Marsh”, a circa 1940s oil by Sue Cory Guenther, a student of Frank Swift Chase; “Pout Pond” a circa 1950s oil by Burnham North Dell; “Two Artists Collaborate” a circa 2000s watercolor by Romana Rainey; and “Harbor Dory”, a 2005 color woodcut by Howard Fraker.
The Collection continues to maintain small exhibits of legacy works at Great Harbor Yacht Club, the Nantucket Community Music Center, Sherburne Commons, and throughout the halls of the VAC.
In our 25th year of exhibitions, the Johnson Gallery fielded a strong cast of new and returning artist members.
We began with our annual Valentine’s show, Heart 2 Heart, and ended with our iconic Holiday Small Works exhibition opening the day after Thanksgiving and running up to the Christmas holiday. Bobby Frazier and the gallery team hung or displayed approximately 1500 works. Shows included our Artist/Patron Exhibition, which has evolved through several formats since its inception in 1950, and the always popular 10x10 Open, which invariably introduces AAN to several potential new artist members.
In 2023 we continued with our Main Street live program, exhibiting 2D works in the front windows of two businesses on Main Street. Sales were facilitated with QR codes. Other sales venues included the Champion Gallery at the Visual Arts Center and the Big Gallery at Straight Wharf. We also continued to strengthen our online presence for artists, which included many works hanging during concurrent Johnson Gallery shows.
During the summer season, we continued offering early art drop off hours with the aid of volunteer Ginger Andrews.
2023 also marked our last full year at the Johnson Gallery under the successful direction of Peter Greenhalgh, who worked with us for over a dozen delightful years.
Stop by the gallery at 19 Washington Street in the heart of Nantucket’s Cultural District. We strive to keep the arts alive.
2023 brought many community education collaborations as well as varied programming for all ages at the Visual Arts Center.
Welcomed AAN’s first fully-funded Ceramic Artist in Residence, Juliet Ehrlich, who spent 5 weeks working with students and engaging with the ceramics department community. One of the classes she taught, “Ceramic Portals and Gateways,” was part of the AAN’s Healing in the Creative Arts Program.
Expanded our outreach to the community by offering more free public offerings such as holiday ornament making, grab-n-go craft bags, and one day workshops.
Teamed up with other local nonprofits by collaborating in island wide events such as the MMA Science Festival, the NHA Cultural Family Nights and the Egan Maritime Festival at the Shipwreck and Life Saving Museum.
Supported the Nantucket STAR program by providing them with the studio and supplies to nurture the creative intelligence of the neurodiverse youth community.
Continued the “Studio to School” program in partnership with the Nantucket New School providing an enriched arts program to over 70 NNS Upper School students at the Visual Arts Center throughout the school year.
In the fall, reorganized the department by promoting Elizabeth Buccino to Director of Education and hiring Lizbet Fuller as the Education Programming Manager. They have been restructuring, re-organizing, and revitalizing programming with a focus on the future!

Longtime island resident and AAN Life Member Kathleen Duncombe, age 73, passed away in January.
A graduate of the Pratt Institute in New York City and former art teacher in the Nantucket school system, Kathleen’s history with AAN harkens back to the Kenneth Taylor Gallery days, where she exhibited her art, taught classes, and shared her creative insights to all those interested. She had several shows at the Little Gallery, including a one woman show in 1987.
In the 1980’s & 1990’s, along with her father, she donated funds to support AAN’s educational programs, and in 1985 she became the director of AAN’s Education Workshop, which she ran for several years.
In possession of a gravelly voice - and gruff demeanor to those whom she had just met - she had a heart of gold, and a true soft spot for her cats and close friends. She will be missed by all who knew her.
