There is something common in all of the CBD areas of Bangalore- narrow streets, absent footpaths, wall-to-wall constructtion, and little to no public space. Also typical is a staggered skyline of a few older ground/ two-floor dwellings, and the many multi-storied residences of 100-200 sq.ft on an avergae. These are homes to people of the working class, labourers, other daily wager residents and small scale industrial activities and business that de ploy them. As seen in these pictures from our study of the labour colony, okalipuram, these are narrow plots and each floor on an average home of 100-200 sq.ft. This is a less than sufficient standard of living for an average family of four. The city is changing. often-times, it’s the oldermost parts of the city that are slowest to adapt, but there-in lies their charm. There’s a lot of beauty in it. Like the patina in an old city. Maybe, just maybe we can add some value ?

by Sindhuja and Nandja Chopra
The project is very flexible, and does not require any land. Through bold proclamation of reappropriating space for the expression of collective culture, the project is an unapologetic call for collective action. The development of kit of parts provides a framework by which the city may be built by citizens themselves in an imaginative way. The use of Urban farming for spaces in-between buildings is commended. Project 02: MOOC - URBAN DESIGN FOR PUBLIC GOOD DELFT X, NETHERLANDS

The MOOC is aimed to improve physical environment in relation to the public good it serves including safety, well being, sustainability and even beauty. This 8 week course and certification focussed on from basic concepts such as mental mapping to urban metabolism and transforming the structure of a city.

6 URBANISM AND PUBLIC GOOD

Project 03: Research and Experiments on Walled City of Udaipur, Rajasthan ( PARKING I TRASH I ARCHITECTURAL INTEGRITY )

Projected Accredited by : Maharana Pratap Charitable Trust, City Palace, Udaipur, Rajasthan

Working Document

Research Partner to Ms. Madeline Li Middle Bury College, US

This project hoped to add the human element to existing urban conservation work. In conducting interviews and assessing out brief urban experiments, we found that the locals and the visitors were ex tremely receptive, encouraging, and helpful. Udai pur is largely dependent on the tourist dollar, but these urban needs of both the visitors and the locals absolutely intersect: both want for Udaipur’s rich culture preserved, in a way that improves the basic streetscape.

We have recommended specific steps be taken now that we have conducted brief experiments and explorations with these various urban ailments. These recommendations take the grassroots views and must be paired with the proper existing organization that is able to yield the necessary power to create meaningful change. Most importantly, we feel that everybody has a stake in preserving Udaipur’s heritage. The work cannot lie in the hands of one or two organizations alone. We hope that our few urban experiments and findings from talking with the local city dwellers can inspire others to contribute to Udaipur’s cultural landscape in similar ways.

A piece of high-end contemporary architecture that comprehends architectural imagination of greek proportions in contemporary language. The minimalist design is subtle yet posh. First floor has been detached from the ground floor to give floating effect and to cut down the volumes of spaces inside.Large volumes have been punctured through to let ample amount of light flow in. The colour pallete helps the building sit tall admist the city and a green paradise with in. The elliptical staircase contrasts the spaces and huge volumes. The spanish curves of the ramp uplifts the building significantly and tones down the intimidating brutal architecture.

Undergraduation Thesis 2015

LIVELIHOOD RESOURCE CENTER
18

INTRODUCTION

Factors aFFecting poverty in the rural area

1. Geography

2. Social Alienation

3. Structural

4. Population growth and access to natural resources and modern production technology

5. Sectoral and infrastructural development

6. Nature of povertyabsolute / relative / chronic

7. Government policies supports

8. Coping Strategy

9. Access to market

The AIM of my THESIS is to provide an approach to think through the trade-offs by en couraging rural and socially marginalized people to think about their different livelihood activities focusing on skills people rely on most which will help them uplift their economic situation by designing a Livelihood Resource Centre or rather a sustainable livelihood Cen tre that would help in poverty eradication by focusing on their strengths and providing them with the opportunities to make their lives a better place to live .

_To develop a Livelihood Resource Centre which is not merely just a place to learn and earn but also is a home to people who have determination to uplift themselves from the tangled web of poverty.

Poverty as a root cause of hunger

_To provide them with adequate amount of knowledge by encouraging their skills, which they exhibit or have potential to learn.

_A learning center where they are allowed to develop between the lines Of urban areas and a village. The unit should have the potential to be Self - sustainable.

_Exploration of terms Livelihoods + Resource | Livelihoods in term of imparting skills by design intervention through skill development center | Resources in terms of imparting knowledge of using energy ; design intervention through designing a solar centre and a green building centre for the campus.

_To explore Sustainable building techniques on site and building level , on design level and in terms of materials .

Vicious circle of Poverty

Debate on poverty in India has remained mostly in the domain of economists. Social dimension of poverty is a neglected area of study. Poverty is more of social marginalization of an individual, household or group in the community/society rather than inadequacy of income to fulfill the basic needs. Indeed, inadequate income is therefore one of the factors of marginalization but not the sole factor. The goal of poverty alleviation programme should aim merely increasing the income level of individual, household or group but mainstreaming marginalized in the development process of the country.

The country cannot claim economic growth when a section of the people are marginalized to the periphery of the society.

The rapid economic growth process should accelerate the access to services like education and health services for all, especially the marginalized citizens.

The link between ignorance and poverty and ill health and poverty are well-established. Poverty alleviation programmes should address the issue of poverty from broader social and economic perspectives.

The intention of this THESIS is not to join the debate on the level of poverty reduction in the country but to undertake a social audit of poverty alleviation programmes in this era of fast economic growth by designing a facility for the poor .

BAREFOOT COLLEGE, Tilonia

The Social Work and Reasearch Centre , registered as the volun tary organization started work in 1972 in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan. Based in a village called Tilonia ,the SWRC now identified as Barefoot College provides services and training to people in the area of basic minimum needs like provsion of drinking water , health , education , employment , meeting fuel and fodder needs and other support services .

The IDEA OF THE PROJECT is to use village knowledge, local skills already available in the villages so that there is no dependency on outside expertise.

It is also a training ground for boys and girls from other states to live and work together , acquire new skills , develop confi dence and when they are ready the Barefoot College provides the necessary support for them to start programmes in other states.

WHY BAREFOOT ?

Because millions of poor in India who pass on the knowledge , skills and wisdom of their forefathers , live ‘ and work barefoot. It is symbolic of recongnition and respect to the poor.

WHY COLLEGE ?

Because it is a centre with a difference where tremendous value is placed on the dignity of labour , of sharing and for those willing to work with their hands.

A centre of learning and unlearning . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

PRECEDENT STUDIES

ACCESS : Site is approched through a 30 m wide road - MAIN ENTRANCE

The back entrance is approached via 4 m wide kuchha road .

CLIMATIC ZONE :

Macro Climate - Hot and Dry

Micro Climate - The Struggle against Desertification being the motto , the campus has been planted with numerous trees creating a micro climate of the place .

TERRAIN : In the Arid and Rocky terrain of Tilonia , site is located on a flat land

FACTUAL INFORMATION :

Earlier known as The Social Work and Research Centre (SWRC) now known as Barefoot College started its work in 1972 in a quiet village of Tilonia , which was a typical Indian village by then , steeped in seemingly insurmountable problems , the worst of which were apathy and a belief in the helpless , unchanging nature of life. New campus was designed and constructed in 1986

Principal Architect : Ar. Neehar Raina

Constructed by : Barefoot Architect Bhanwar , a supposedly illeterate architect with the traditional building knowledge of all the local mate rials available initiated the construction along with 12 other villagers .

AREA ANALYSIS :

SITE AREA : 8 Acres

Built Up : 3000 sq.m

Surroundings : No constructions - vacant lands .

LIFE And ARCHITECTURE AT BAREFOOT :

Barefoot has adopted the concept of Sustainable Livelihood , an attempt to go beyond the conventional definitions and approaches to poverty eradication.

The College has proved that both illiterate and semi-literate men and women can fabricate, install, use, repair and maintain sophisticated solar units through basic knowledge share and hands-on practical training.

The ancient skills of thousands of village weavers, leather workers, potters, rope makers, blacksmiths are dying because they are losing there markets and they are migratingto slums in cities looking for menial jobs. It is colossal tragedy that they cannot continue to live in villages with dignity and self respect.

Powerlooms have replaced handlooms. Plastic shoes, rope and utensils coming in from cities have destroyed the livelihoods of leather workers and potters.

What Barefoot College has done is to use these traditinal skills and offer them alternatives. The village blacksmiths now make geodesic domes and parabolic solar cookers instead of only agricultural implements for bullock power. The leather workers instead of pro ducing leather buckets for irrigation, now make and market leather backed chairs that the carpenters make.

TRADITIONAL COMMUNICATION

Communicators perform and initiate discussions on socioeconomic messages and powerful themes such as drinking water, environmental sustainability, mini mum wages, employment, dalit violence, untouchability, casteism, money lending, communal harmony, violence against women, female empowerment and children’s rights.

Audiences includeS both children and adults, as well as individuals from a range of literacy levels and vocations.

Puppetry and drama has a huge contribution in creating awareness about various social issues in villages , schools and even in other countries which have led to a fundamental change in mindsets.

Today, the communication team meets the audio and visual needs of the Col lege and its educational and developmental initiatives by producing street plays, music, puppet shows, films, presentations, radio broadcasts, pamphlets, posters, banners, booklets, manuals, t-shirt graphics or any other art work.

ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSIS ( geodesic str.) :

_Keeps the space cool and breezy

_White exteriors reflects the heat and decreases the heat time-lag ; absorbs less heat

RAIN WATER HARVESTING

Barefoot water engineers using a technology hundreds of years old connected all the roofs of the campus and collected 4,00,000 litres of rainwater in an underground tank built under a stage where 5,000 people could sit and watch street theatre and traditional dance.]

The only way to revitalize the dry pumps is ground water recharge .

As the salt lake in Sambhar makes the ground water saline , rain water collection is the best alternative which has been adopted here.

Labour, supervision, monitoring and raw materials finally cost Re.1 per litre.

Wells to regenarate ground water levels and 2 huge storage tanks that supply water to all the green areas through drip irrigation system

SOLAR LIGHTING

Barefoot solar engineers solar electrified the whole campus. The only college in India fully solar electri fied where all the power to run 20 computers , elec tronic mail , photocopying machine, pathology lab, projectors, cameras, recharging batteries,700 lights and fans comes from the sun .

2 responsible women are selected from different villages who has roots in the village have to undergo a 6 month training programme to be trained as barefoot solar engineer.

That particular programme is taught by barefoot pro fessionals through easiest means ; these women then go back to their villages to light up their villages . They are taught to construct , maintain as well as repair those systems .

ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSIS (Blocks) :

_400 mm thick walls increase the thermal mass. These walls lose the heat through transferring and radiation during night and its temperature remains in low and average degree during the day, thus, it provides enough comfort for residents.

_Shaded courtyards to cool the air

_The blocks are places close together so that the sun heats up as little as possible of the wall surface.

_Narrow streets with shade help cool the air.

_Small doors and windows

_Cross ventilation has been achieved

_Structures are made by the villagers themselves ; prefabricated structures have been adjoined together.

_Use of ferrocement for stability of the structure.

_Implementation of small wind catchers.

ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSIS (walls) :

_The joints in the walls are offset , to make the building disaster resistant.

_ The Tradional Techniques have been used for wall constructions.

A crosspiece is used with two strings attached to the corner to make sure that wall is at level during construction.

DEVELOPMENT ALTERNATIVES

New Delhi

Development Alternatives engages in scientific research and innovation, on-the-ground implementation of eco solutions as well as communication and policy influence. Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA) prac tices green business incubation and provides technical support services.

Development Alternatives (DA), the world’s first social enter prise dedicated to sustainable development, is a research and action organisation striving to deliver socially equitable, en vironmentally sound and economically scalable development outcomes. DA’s green technology innovations for habitat, water, energy and waste management, which deliver basic needs and generate sustainable livelihoods, have reduced poverty and reju venated natural ecosystems in the most backward regions of India.

DA’s Mission is to help eliminate poverty and regenerate the environmental resource base through methods that are highly scalable. Its activities broadly cover three primary areas that underlie any sustainable development process :

_the design and large-scale dissemination of appropriate technologies

_rational environmental management systems

_equitable people-oriented institutions and policies. The DA Group innovates such eco-solutions to help meet the basic needs of all and works with partners, including government bodies, local entrepreneurs and civil society

PLAN

24
SITE

The GROUND FLOOR is open to the public, who visit the shop and use DA’s resource center. The floor plan presents several paths for exploration.

One can ascend from the amphitheater and from the cafeteria garden, and cross the bridge from the middle wing to the curved wing, or ascend further to the terrace above the conference room, and eventually reach the yoga terrace outside the gym, where one is visually immersed in a forest of green –a nature reserve extending to the horizon.

TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN( 1-6 th Floor)

The unified palette of materials is woven into a variety of textures, colors, and patterns. Most materials are hand-wrought by skilled craftspeople.

The materials and the spatial configuration of the building carry on local tradition, especially the architecture of forts and palaces – with courtyards and terraces, screens and balconies, pools and pavilions that evolved in response to the climate.

25

Interaction with nature is central to the design. The rhythm of the seasons and the change of light throughout the day are part of an invigorating experience of life in the building. The building volume is modulated in response to the climate shading against the sun in summer, welcoming it in winter, and capturing the monsoon breezes.

The design of each facade is different, especially the fenestration, in response to solar orientation and view.
