WE RIDE...

FROM THE DIRECTOR FROM THE PRESIDENT CHERYL BENNETT

LESLIE BENZ

As I enter my fourth year as Executive Director of Swiftsure Ranch, it seems easier to look forward than to remember how far we’ve come. The pace we set for ourselves in 2011, and have maintained ever since, has been truly breathtaking. Seemingly insurmountable challenges and once-distant goals have been realized; the growth and change that has occurred now seems almost commonplace. But we’re not done!

Thank you, Wood River Valley. The support within our community for Swiftsure Ranch Therapeutic Equestrian Center and our riders throughout 2014 was nothing short of amazing. I speak on behalf of our entire Board of Directors when I express heartfelt gratitude for all the ways in which this community has supported our programs.

While the connection between our horses, riders, staff and volunteers has remained constant, the increase to 107 riders a week is indicative of the immense need for the unique services we provide. Each year we continue to enhance our collaboration with the Blaine County school system and other non-profits like Camp Rainbow Gold, Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind, Boise VA and Higher Ground. In 2014, we further solidified our commitment to providing the highest level of equine-assisted activities and therapies by becoming a Premier Accredited Center (PAC) with the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Int’l.). This is no small achievement; Swiftsure Ranch endured an extensive site visit and evaluation resulting in our becoming one of only 248 PACs out of 685 members in the U.S. Throughout 2,885 hours of lessons annually, our instructors develop goals and lesson plans specific to each rider’s abilities and needs. This ensures the best possible lesson while increasing our riders’ skill level and confidence. We require all of our instructors to be or become certified by PATH International. Our instructors continually educate themselves in the latest training strategies, going above and beyond the required training to ensure that our riders are being taught by the best in the business.

This past year, many of the plans envisioned for Swiftsure Ranch were realized. We’ve developed miles of trails to promote the sensory experience via horseback, and provide novelty and variety for riders old and new. We have a new riverside campground to host veterans’ camps and other multi-day retreats, an amenity that doesn’t exist elsewhere in our community. Our newly covered outdoor arena, at 30,000 square feet, allows us much more flexibility in scheduling, a more comfortable environment for everyone, and a far better therapeutic riding experience for our “high risk” riders and those who benefit most from a controlled environment. With every improvement to our program, we see more possibilities for the Ranch. We are exploring possibilities for enclosing the outdoor arena, an ambitious goal which would allow four-season flexibility to conduct our programming safely and efficiently, and offer the capacity to meet at least some of the pent-up demand of deserving potential riders who’ve been wait-listed. 2015 will also see a developed Master Plan addressing future infrastructure improvements, and the means to provide them. As demand for our services increases, our goals include planning for program expansion and professional accommodations for Hippotherapy and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. I thank our Board of Directors, our Staff and our Volunteers for the commitment they’ve made to ensuring Swiftsure Ranch is a place the entire community is rightfully proud of. I thank all of you for investing in our riders, our mission, our vision and our future. The dividends we see are beyond measure, and I hope this report captures some of their value for you.

TO FLY!

Your support of our efforts is both humbling and empowering. The magic that happens here, and ripples out into our community, could not exist without you.

3,108 LESSONS 166 ACTIVE RIDERS 107 LESSONS PER WEEK 2,885 INSTRUCTOR HOURS 2,574 VOLUNTEER HOURS FOUR SESSIONS OF 8-12 WEEKS

Swiftsure’s regular therapeutic riding programs consist of weekly individual or group riding lessons, 30 minutes to one hour in length, focusing on horsemanship skills to promote independence, build strength and coordination, improve cognitive processing and foster social skills. Participants work toward practical goals such as going on a trail ride, competing in a horse show, learning to jump or learning to herd cows. For some of our riders, simply showing up, getting outside and staying astride a horse for 45 minutes is a Herculean task and an accomplishment in itself. Once a rider is accepted into our program, we work to accommodate their disability on whatever level is necessary.

CAMP RAINBOW GOLD • ONCOLOGY, TEEN & SIBLING CAMP • 60 KIDS TOTAL • 3 ONE-DAY CAMPS For the first time in our long collaboration with CRG, the kids came to us instead of us trucking horses north to Cathedral Pines. Genius! Less hassle, more quality time on horseback and the benefits of our beautiful facility. Each camper enjoyed our new trail system, plus a barn tour, sports station, horse painting, making horse shoe ornaments, and joining a campfire sing-a-long with Alex Woodard and our very own Kirsten Cutler.

SIBLING RIDING DAY • • • •

A NEW ONE-DAY SUMMER SESSION 34 SIBLINGS 7 GROUPS OF SIBLING RIDERS 40 VOLUNTEER HOURS

Our younger riders brought their brothers or sisters to the Ranch for a day of riding and education. Disability or catastrophic illness affects entire families, straining interpersonal relationships. Sometimes it can feel as if the whole world revolves around adapting to special needs. It’s powerful and positive for healthy kids to experience the Swiftsure magic themselves, and observe directly how their sibling is benefiting from equine therapy. Plus, it’s fun! And that’s an invaluable bonding opportunity that can be hard to come by.

VETERANS’ PROGRAMS • 35 VETERANS, 3 OCCASIONS, 4 DAYS • 40 HOURS OF DESIGN AND LOGISTICAL PREPARATION • 15 SPECIALLY TRAINED VOLUNTEERS Veterans’ programs at Swiftsure Ranch are customized to create opportunities for experiential learning with the horse’s unique ability to mirror human behavior and deliver non-verbal, non-judgmental feedback. Many events culminate in mounted activities, but the main focus is on civilian and societal reintegration, personal reflection, self-awareness, relationship building and teamwork. Ask one of our participants, and the results will speak for themselves.

RANCH HAND PROGRAM • • • •

16 PARTICIPANTS 8 WEEKS, 2 TIMES PER WEEK 144 RIDING LESSONS 80 TOTAL HOURS WORKING ON THE RANCH

Swiftsure fills a gap for teens with social or behavioral issues who may need direction and support in a safe, structured environment. Through work projects and team-building exercises, participants gain social interaction skills, responsibility, and accountability. Each teen establishes personal goals and pursues them in partnership with our equines. Weekly riding lessons add horsemanship skills, building confidence and selfesteem. Upon successful completion of the program, ranch hands receive a stipend and a notable achievement to add to their resume.

AND TO OUR EQUINE SUPPORT PROVIDERS

EQUINE MASSAGE Swiftsure’s four-legged therapists are dedicated to carrying riders of all physical and mental abilities. Some riders have no control over their bodies, which can cause problems for a horse. To stay fit and sound, horses need riders who are balanced in their “seat,” or saddle. Otherwise, pressure points can lead to compensation in other areas, creating soreness and potential gait issues—a downward spiral for both horse and rider. Horses, like humans, suffer adverse effects from tense, contracted muscles: pressure on surrounding tissue, pain and discomfort, decreased circulation and restricted range of motion. Muscular injuries, unattended, can compound movement problems and affect training. Equine massage therapy helps performance horses fulfill their potential. Fortunately, long-time board member, volunteer and Swiftsure supporter Teri Szombathy has provided integrated equine therapy for our herd since last winter. “I found that the horses were sore after a lesson,” Teri says, “and this progressed into bigger problems. They would get grumpy and not perform well. Hopefully I make them feel more comfortable, keeping them mentally and physically happy.” Happy horses + decreased vet bills = happy riders and a healthy program.

DEDICATED LIFE CHANGERS At Swiftsure one can fly without wings. Swiftsure lifts people from their wheelchair to the back of a horse, where they can look down on the world instead of always up. Swiftsure allows people battling a disease to forget their struggle for that one hour that they commune with their horse. Swiftsure enables a young girl without the use of her arms to use adaptive reins and ride the horse without assistance. Swiftsure soothes the souls of veterans. Swiftsure provides horses that are gentle giants, an incredible staff of instructors and volunteers that help even the most timid to feel safe and loved. Miracles happen everyday at Swiftsure. I am honored to be part of such a special place. Gail, Swiftsure Volunteer

It’s often said that one leaves Swiftsure feeling better than when they arrived. I’m pretty sure that this is an almost universally accepted axiom. As of late, I have spent some time wondering just why this wonderful feeling comes over us and here is a snippet of those thoughts. I’m part of teams for three adult riders. When I head to the ranch I have a 20 minute drive and go about my various tasks to be ready for the lesson. Not a big deal. Two of the three have a one-way travel time of from 45 to 90 minutes to get here and they all have an amazing support system in place to make it happen. A very big deal. During and after the lesson time they make us feel like family and share what’s going on in their lives. With everything on their plate, they never forget the little things and want to know how we are and what’s special in our lives; kids, grandkids, health and the like. I heard recently that one of these folks made mention that without the ranch, its people and program, that their progress would not be what it is today. Wow! For all the above and more, these folks are my heroes and mentors for my life so I humbly say...what’s not to feel good about! I thank them. Pete, Swiftsure Volunteer
